The Red Angus Board of Directors and staff are continually searching for new ways to expand critical mass – meaning more Red Angusinfluenced genetics are available in the marketplace. A very large component of this multiplestep marketing program is increasing the number of quality commercial heifers available for Red Angus producers to replace their aging cows and expand the numbers in their current herd. We also help provide tools for the operations that specifically raise, develop and breed heifers as replacements. Whatever you prefer to do – raise your own or buy replacements – Red Angus strives to be your market source for these females.
In the last 15 years, the high year for retention of replacement heifers was 1995 at 6.5 million head. The low was in 2011 at 5.2 million head. Weather conditions – specifically drought – and market factors – calves needing to be placed on feed – were sited as the two main reasons for the decline.
In 2012, the industry retained 5.4 million head and projections for female retention in 2013 equals 5.6 million. With this slight increase we may return to the average of 5.9 million like we saw in 2006-2007. Even though it appears we are on an upward trend,, we will need more market share to expand Red Angus registrations and total critical mass. Dr. J. Walter Prevatt, professor and Extension economist at Auburn University, provides the following information and comment:
I think heifer retention during this cattle cycle will be more moderate than many of those we have seen in years past. The high cost of carrying a cow coupled with limited pasture resources (land in CRP, more land in rural residences, more land in row crops, average age of farmers, older farmers that exited during the drought in Southern Plains may not reenter or at the level that were in past years, etc.) will constrain the pace of heifer retention.

However, I think heifer retention will be higher this year due to the following factors: 1. Higher feeder calf prices (due to limited numbers, prospects of reasonable wheat pasture plantings, lower feed costs, etc.) 2. Rainfall has been better overall in many areas this year and particularly in the Southern Plains and southeast 3. Lower feed costs 4. Higher retail and slaughter cattle prices The question for Red Angus leadership and stakeholders is ‘how do we increase our critical mass in the beef marketplace for our breed?’
One answer is that RAAA assists stakeholders by offering free commercial female marketing services through the Red Angus Stockyard at stockyard.redangus.org. Producers can follow easy instructions to list their cattle online plus, they may also qualify for a free FeMail eBlast to alert potential buyers of their females offered for sale.
FeMail is an electronic communication tool that helps producers find or market ranchtested replacements. Potential buyers can locate commercial Red Angus-influenced heifer calves, bred heifers and even cow-calf pairs. In order to qualify for a free FeMail eBlast, producers must be selling at least 25 females on the Red Angus Stockyard. Pfeiff brings boots-on-the-ground experience to DNA department Halla Pfeiff of Briggsdale, Colo., recently joined the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) as the special projects coordinator, and will focus her attention on RAAA’s DNA department submissions and other special projects for the Association. Pfeiff boasts both a seedstock and commercial cattle industry background. She grew up working for a 200head registered and commercial Angus ranch as well as her family’s own operation. Pfeiff earned a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Colorado State University (CSU) in Ft. Collins, Colo. During her time at CSU, Pfeiff held several internships including a dataintensive internship with Leachman Cattle of Colorado. Another handson internship with Heartland Cattle Co., McCook, Neb., is also included in her experiences. “Halla greeted her new role on the RAAA staff with open arms and has been enthusiastic to learn responsibilities as quickly as possible,” said Kenda Ponder, RAAA database and registration consultant. “Her commitment to assist stakeholders shows in her eagerness to learn and be knowledgeable about the evolving world of DNA technol-

ogy. She will have other responsibilities with special projects outside of the DNA in-house process. Her background and education will be more than advantageous for the continued success of the RAAA and its stakeholders,” Ponder said. Pfeiff’s initial duties include assisting Red Angus stakeholders with the submission of DNA. She will be the direct contact between the members and the DNA lab. She is also adept in the reporting of DNA results. Halla will be the go-to staff person if a member has a question on completing the DNA order form and what rules and regulations pertain to DNA testing. In the future, her duties will expand to assisting with carcass data collection projects and other research endeavors.
Pfeiff said, “I am excited to be apart of an association that cares so deeply about its members, and their success in the industry. I look forward to being a part of the continuous growth of the Red Angus breed.” Pfeiff also added that working in the DNA department has allowed her to visualize how much growth can be made within the cattle industry pertaining to DNA technology, and is eager to assist members as they continue to move forward with DNA testing. ■

Changes to Pro-Cow labeling
Pro-Cow is a registered trademark of the RAAA and originally was a tool utilized to label large numbers of Red Angus-influenced females suggested to be of breeding-heifer quality.
In 2010, a significant change was applied for by RAAA and accepted by the USDA-AMS to make the ProCow label a part of the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP). At that point, a Pro-Cow enrollment identified breeding females as a cowherd enrollment that met the 50 percent Red Angus bloodlines qualifications in accordance with the USDA-AMS. Relatively small numbers of producers utilized the Pro-Cow program as a cowherd enrollment. Therefore, RAAA was of the opinion that the Pro-Cow name was underutilized and wanted to alter the FCCP lan-

By doing so, Pro-Cow is now going to be utilized as a marketing tool to identify replacement-quality females. It remains important that buyers have confidence they are purchasing Red Angus-influenced females. Only females enrolled in the FCCP will be eligible to be labeled as Pro-Cows, therefore insuring at least 50 percent Red Angus bloodlines. RAAA will offer a 99-cent, white

Certified Red Cow (CRC) will take over the current cowherd enrollment process associated with the FCCP in order to allow producers utilizing Category 3 bulls (such as hybrid bulls that are 50% or greater AR) bred to CRC cows and FCCP tag those calves. Certified Red Cow is a USDA Process Verified Program that meets the 50 percent Red Angus bloodlines qualifications in accordance with the USDA-AMS. Member Services Bulletin Spring 2013 Weaning Worksheets
Postcards were sent out in August as a reminder that it is time to report Spring 2013 weaning worksheets to comply with the THR Calendar. Fall 2013 Heifer Exposure Inventory
Reminders will be sent out around mid-November.
Heifer exposure data is important as it is used for the calculation of the Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) EPD which is a trait of great economic relevance to our commercial customers – the greater their pregnancy rate, the fewer heifers must be retained as replacements, and the more can be “cash cropped.”
The heifer exposure inventory is for yearling heifers 9-17 months of age, and requires members to indicate:
• Breeding season start and end dates (mandatory for information to be entered) • Exposure information • Management group designation • Disposal information (when applicable)
Management group designations are used to distinguish females that were provided different opportunities to become pregnant. Just a few examples of such include: • Differences in nutrition • Pasture vs. dry-lot development • A.I. only vs. A.I. plus clean up bull, etc.

Spring 2014 NCE Deadline: 10/25/13 for data on paper 11/1/13 for electronic data • One breeding pasture given 25-day bull exposure vs. another given 60day bull exposure.
Remember, RAAA does not need palpation records, only whether or not the heifers were exposed to breeding. Please return by mid-February 2014. Avoid Reactivation Fees!
Dams previously listed on the Fall Herd Inventory will be inactivated if a calf record or reason code (reason why there is no calf record) is not submitted for the year 2012. During the last week of October, RAAA will send its members a list of females which have been inactivated. If any of these cows on this list are still in the herd, submit their 2012 calf record or reason code by December 1, 2013, to avoid reactivation fees. ■

Profit begins with reproduction. Producers who can count on a higher percentage of pregnant heifers will have a larger number of replacements that they can cash crop. The Red Angus HEIFER PREGNANCY (HPG) EPD predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. CALVING EASE is a trait of major economic impact. As iconic as the American cowboy’s boots, hat and lariat are his simple words of wisdom. Take, for example, the old Will Rogers quote, “If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging.” That’s a commonsense recommendation, much like “many hands make for light work.” While the American cowboy cannot take credit for the latter, (that quote originated from poet John Heyward in the 1500s), they have often used the theory when assembling a crew of 18 to 25 cowhands to work and ship cattle.
But as any seasoned ranch hand, ranch wife or ranch kid can tell you, problems will occur and stress rise when two or more crew members decide they’re the boss and begin ram-rodding the task.
“The key to handling cattle in a lowstress manner is that most people
should act as herd holders and allow only one person to put pressure on the cattle,” explained Ron Gill, an AgriLife Extension specialist from Texas.
Gill is one of several cattle handling experts featured in the Beef Quality Assurance’s video “Stockmanship and Stewardship: Creating and managing movement is the key to effective cattle handling.” The video provides 75 minutes-worth of low-stress cattle handling tips, techniques and memorable words of wisdom. “If you’re in a pasture and everyone is pressing on a set of cows, those cows won’t know where to go,” Gill explained. “As you bring cattle around to corral them, there needs to be one person putting pressure on the front and few in the back to keep the cattle moving, but everyone can’t be whooping and hollering.” Gill used to work cattle with 17 to 18 people, but has since downsized the crew to four or six like-minded people who understand and can imple-

We have had our Black Angus cows do this for up to 22 years and very common over 15 years. The base of our Red herd came from our Blacks. • 50 years of breeding like cattle on like cattle on like cattle. This eliminates variables. • Bulls sold in the fall have been significantly more affordable than spring sales. More than 50% of our bulls sold the last two years brought $3,000 or less.

If good flow is established at the back end, problems in the front end like rearing up, backing up or general balking, tend to fix themselves, she said. “We can all agree on the outcome we want – a calm animal walking through the chute. Good handling starts in the back.”

It’s important that the smaller crew understands basic principles of cattle handling, like pressure zones and balance principles. A pressure zone is the area where the animal starts to move away or respond to you. A balance point is where the cattle will either stop and turn away from you or go past you. “If the workers are not on the same page, I’d rather do it myself, because they’re likely impeding the flow that I’m building,” Gill said.
No matter the size of the crew, its members will likely have varying degrees of experience and capabilities. In many operations across the country, the most inexperienced person is sent to the back of the facilities
to bring the cattle up through the system, but Gill says that’s the spot for the most experienced cattle handler.
“In my opinion, the most important part is getting the cattle into the system,” he said. This person is responsible for setting up the flow and minimizing the stress on the cattle. Colorado State University professor

According to Grandin, yelling, screaming and whistling are stressful noises for cattle. “Get your mouths closed,” she said.

Gill agreed and explained that big noises and big movements will likely cause pressure on cattle you didn’t intend to pressure at a time they’re not expecting it or you’re not expecting it.
“Be quiet and keep your hands down as much as possible,” he said, “then if you do need to move your hand or create some noise to get cattle moving, you’ll have those tools available to you.” Instead of whooping and hollering, the experts agree that using pressure zones and balance points are much more effective methods for moving cattle.
“All the work we do in the corrals, begins in the pasture when you first gather them,” said Pate. “When you put pressure on the livestock, let them have a chance to move away from you.” This teaches the animals to move away from pressure, instead of running scared from a loud ranch hand.

Therefore, it’s important to make each experience as positive as possible. It sets you and the cattle up for success later on. “We not only get the cattle to stay healthy and gain weight, but we also train them to take the pressures of the next stage,” said Pate. Calving is the bottom of the pyramid. “If we treat them right when we first contact them, if they have a good, positive experience with a human, that’ll carry through for a long time.” Build on that principle at branding, weaning, shipping and so on.

Five things moms get wrong at the grocery store The majority of moms shop for groceries one to two times each week, spending more than $76 on an average trip. This article is based off the results from the “Gate to Plate” survey conducted by CommonGround, a grassroots movement to foster this conversation among women – on farms and in cities – about where our food comes from. Pricey Labels 1. Organic The majority of moms incorrectly define organic production. • 84 percent believe that organic food is farmed without pesticides, fertilizers or herbicides. • 50 percent of moms believe organic is inherently better than non-organic foods. The Facts – Organic food is produced without using MOST conventional pesticides. However, more than 50 synthetic pesticides may be used in organic crop production if other substances fail to prevent or control the target pest. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “our current evidence does not support any meaningful nutritional benefits or deficits from eating organic compared with conventionally grown foods, and there are not well-powered human studies that directly demonstrate health benefits or disease protection as a result of consuming an organic diet.”

2. GMO Moms fear what they don’t understand. • 25 percent of moms have never heard of GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) foods. The majority of Moms question the safety of GMO foods. • 43 percent – nearly half – of moms believe that GMO food is nutritionally and chemically different than nonGMO food.
The Facts – All GMO foods are still exhaustively assessed for safety by groups like the FDA and USDA. In the 12plus years that modern biotech crops have been commercially grown, there has not been a single documented case of an ecosystem disrupted or a person made ill. GMO foods are nutritionally and chemically identical to food grown from non-biotech crops. 3. Hormone Free • More than half of moms agree it is important to feed their families hormone-free poultry and pork – even though it may cost more to do so.
The Facts – There’s no need to pay extra for poultry or pork that’s labeled hormone-free. USDA prohibits farmers from using hormones to raise chickens and pigs.
“All Natural” whenever possible because it is a more nutritious choice for their family.
The Facts – “All Natural” doesn’t connote nutritional benefits. As required by USDA, meat, poultry and egg products labeled as “natural” must be minimally processed and contain no artificial ingredients. However, the natural label does not include any standards regarding farm practices and only applies to processing of meat and egg products.
5. Locally Grown • More than half of moms say locally produced foods are always better for the environment.

Currently there are six hormones approved for use in beef production. A study from Oklahoma State University Extension noted that an implanted steer contains approximately 7 nanograms of estrogen compared to 5 nanograms of estrogen from non-implanted beef animal. To put this in perspective nanograms are equivalent to 1 billionth of a gram. One gram is roughly equal in weight to 1 small paper clip. If we were to divide the same paper clip into 2 billion tiny pieces, one of those tiny pieces could equal 1 nanogram. *
