It's a pleasure to be writing this month’s board commentary. The September issue focuses on commercial marketing which is interesting because, from my viewpoint, EVERY issue is the commercial marketing issue. The RAAA is founded and grounded in what brought us to the party – the success of Red Angus cattle day in and day out in production agriculture. If you are reading this, you are blessed to be involved with a breed that is truly commercially focused and grassroots driven.
So let's focus on "commercial marketing." In a nutshell, this means selling our product – whether you're selling a bull, feeder calves, cull cows, packaged beef, a 4-H steer, a breeding heifer … you are ultimately involved in marketing beef. That's the end product of every beef animal born. You see the value of the end product that Red Angus helps provide. You may see the value through the mother cow, quality grade, easy-feeding characteristics; disposition ... the list goes on an on. The bottom line is – Red Angus brings value throughout the production sector from cow-calf to the meat case, and it's our job as stakeholders in the RAAA to tell the story and market that value. If you are reading this magazine, you are a "stakeholder" in the Red Angus breed. Stakeholder? Yep. According to the worldwide wisdom of Wikipedia, that means that you are "a person, group, organization, member or system who affects or can be affected by an organization's actions." You, yes, YOU – can affect the RAAA and the RAAA can affect you. This is a two-way relationship that has flourished for the 60year history of the RAAA – even if the term "stakeholder" has only become popular more recently.
Chances are you are a member of an elite group who works together to feed the world. Red Angus cattle are a vital link in providing a way to do this efficiently, safely and sustainably. This story needs to be told. This story is a vital link in "commercial marketing."
6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2013
The RAAA Promotions Committee, comprised of stakeholders, of course, brainstormed to define the mission of promotions. Following is a one-sentence mission statement:
"To effectively tell the Red Angus story using sound science and real-world beef production to advance the Red Angus Association of America as a trusted source of information and genetics for the beef industry."
In this mission statement, I hope you'll see some things to be excited about. Here's a list of words that jump out to me: Effectively – Let's tell this story and do it right to make an impact. Let's effectively affect people. Sound science – Quantifiable, hard evidence and facts that are validated and proven in production.
Real world – Putting Red Angus to the test in the pasture, feedlot and on the rail. Theories are great, but without practicality and return on investment, they aren't useful. Trusted source – Trust is earned through honesty and integrity - and hard work to preserve both.
Beef industry – We're all in this together, raising beef and affecting one another as stakeholders.
I challenge you to see the strategies and goals set forth in not only telling the Red Angus story effectively, but in LIVING the Red Angus story while "affecting" those around us, and being "affected" by programs and services provided by the RAAA. I challenge you to tell your part of the Red Angus story as a portion of your "commercial marketing." I challenge you to spread the message of Red Angus, beef and production agriculture to stakeholders, consumers and the uninformed. Together, we ARE the RAAA, and together we have a powerful story. ■

Association Commentary
A Decade of Service
Red Angus says farewell to Greg Comstock who proficiently served RAAA for more than a decade. Known for “big picture” thinking Greg applied his combined skills of strategic planning and marketing ability to strengthen the Red Angus’ position in the beef industry.
While well known for his industry knowledge, many Red Angus National Convention attendees will reminisce about the specially hand-crafted picture frames and mesquite coffee tables auctioned to benefit the Red Angus Foundation. Red Angus is thankful for the contributions Greg has made during his decade of service. Originating from Virginia and a graduate of Virginia Tech University, Greg began his beef industry career in the Hereford breed. During the course of a successful career as a sale manager for Hereford breeders across the country, Greg built a strong reputation for his marketing ability. Greg’s experience with Hereford cattle helped prepare him for his next step of serving the Senepol breed on a path that would eventually lead him to Red Angus.
RAAA’s Bob Hough recognized Greg’s strengths as he participated in the development of the 2003 Strategic Plan. Shortly after, Comstock was hired by RAAA to join the staff as Commercial Marketing Director. In that capacity Greg played a large part in organizing programs that members and Red Angus bull customers alike recognize and utilize on their respective ranches today. Pro-Cow, Grid Master and the addition of age and source verification to the Feeder Calf Certification Program are now all recognizable staples in the beef industry and were all initiated during Greg’s tenure at RAAA. In his first five years of service at RAAA, Greg established himself as a valuable Red Angus staff member. Largely because of his success leading the mar-

keting department, in 2008 Greg was placed at the helm of the Association as Chief Executive Officer.
The prosperity of Red Angus under Greg’s direction is well documented. RAAA currently boasts the largest membership in the most recent three years, an overall increase in cowherd inventory and the largest total recorded calf crop of the most recent three years. Greg’s leadership and ability to assist the membership in capitalizing on the strengths of Red Angus cattle is very recognizable in this business. In addition, Greg possessed the capability to identify and employ staff that continues to skillfully serve the RAAA membership, produce the most accurate data possible and broadcast the Red Angus message. That staff has helped secure a strong position for Red Angus cattle in the marketplace. As we pause to reflect on an era, many of you will have memories of Greg attending bull sales, presenting in committee and board meetings, at conventions and, no doubt, will recall the camaraderie established over the years. Greg will be remembered for his contributions to RAAA, its membership and by the staff he served within the last 10 years. The rich history of Red Angus has been positively impacted by the legacy that Greg Comstock has built and leaves behind. RAAA would like to wish Greg well as he embarks on new challenges and as he begins the next phase of his career in the beef industry. Greg, thank you for a “Decade of Service” to the Red Angus Association of America. ■

Grid Master 2012-2013
The Red Angus Grid Master program has had another great year. Red Angus cattle and those who feed them have proven capable of meeting the rigorous challenge of being labeled a “Grid Master” by meeting or exceeding the increased specifications from three years ago.
Drought, feed cost and availability challenged feeders to identify those cattle that have potential for profitability in premium markets. Cattle that have the ability to be efficient in the feed yards and still meet the specifications for Grid Master are valuable at each stage of the beef supply chain. The Red Angus Grid Master program recognizes the ranches that breed these great cattle, the feeders, as well as the packers who seek to locate those cattle for premium branded beef programs. Over 1,200 head of Red Angus cattle enrolled in the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) achieved the Grid Master label this year. Ranches and feed yards new to the program, combined with sea-
Six lots were conventionally fed and grid marketed through Tyson Foods at Garden City, Kan., National Beef at Dodge City, Kan., Cargill at Fort Morgan, Colo., and through the GeneNet and 70/70 grids which harvested cattle in the JBS Swift & Company plants in Grand Island, Neb. and Greeley, Colo.

DNA FAQ
FAQ: How do I collect a hair sample and what does a quality sample look like?
Answer: Hair samples must be pulled from the tail switch (long, course hair at the end of tail), NOT hair from the tail head. The hair must be pulled, NOT cut from the tail switch because the DNA is collected from the follicles at the end of the hair strand that was once attached to the skin. The follicles from the tail switch are larger and more desirable for DNA testing.
by Rebecca Mettler, RAAA DNA Coordinator genotype on the calf. Since the calf gets half of its genetics from the sire and half from the dam, having the SNP markers from the dam can help to rule out one of the sires that qualified originally. FAQ: One of the sires was listed as “Not on File.” Why?
Answer: A sire is listed as “not on file” if a SNP fingerprint is not on file at the RAAA testing lab. The member might have submitted a sample years ago but that sample likely has STR (microsatellite or ISAG) markers on file. SNP and STR markers cannot be compared at this time. If samples are on file at another lab, request they be sent to the National Office. If the party submitting the parent verification is not the owner of the sire sample on file at another lab, they must contact the sample owner and have them release it. Provided there is sufficient DNA, the sire sample will then be run for SNP parentage and parent verified to their progeny. If the sire is on file with SNP at another breed association, Canadian Angus for example, the SNP markers can be transferred to RAAA and placed in RAAA’s parentage database for future parent verification.
Quality sample consists of hair pulled from the tail switch; sample should have 20 to 30 visible hair follicles for mature animals and 50 follicles for young calves. Sample must be clear of all foreign matter. Hair follicle is placed inside the card and the excess strands of hair should be cut off. Placing the hair follicles inside the hair card lessens the possibilities of cross contamination between samples. Hair card should also be labeled with animal ID information (front cover of the hair card). FAQ: Is it OK to submit a Multiple Sire Group that includes closely related animals?
Answer: If a multiple sire group is submitted with possible sires that are closely related there is a chance that more than one sire will qualify to a calf. This is because the genotypes of the sires can be similar enough to each other and have enough in common with the calf’s genotype to both qualify. This does not happen often but can be a problem that members run into when submitting a group of sires that include both sire and progeny or full sibs in the same sire group. When more than one sire qualifies to a calf, the next step is to submit a sample on the calf’s dam. Submitting the calf’s dam gives the lab the ability to analyze a complete

FAQ: What does a Parent Verification result of “sire excluded” or “dam excluded” mean?
Answer: The possible sire or dam listed was tried as a parent to the progeny sample and was found to not be the true sire or dam. For animals registered with RAAA, an exclusion letter will accompany the results indicating that the animal tested for SNP parentage is on a registration status “B.” Registration status “B” places the animal and any related animals in its pedigree on hold until the parentage exclusion is resolved.
If the submitting party is certain of the animals’ parentage, one option is to submit a new sample on both the offspring and excluded parent to rule out misidentification of the original samples submitted. In the event that parentage exclusion cannot be resolved through further DNA testing, please contact the National Office.
If parent verification cannot be confirmed, the animal will need to be recorded with an unidentified sire or dam in the place of an excluded parent. This will result in category changes for the progeny according to the rules and regulations of the RAAA Breeder’s Guide.

DNA FAQ
Upon notification of a qualified parent, the animal will be returned to registered status after the pedigree is corrected in the RAAA office. The new parent will automatically update the animal’s pedigree. FAQ: How do I order a 50K Genomic Merit test?
Answer: There are two options when ordering 50K for Red Angus animals (RA50K and PF50K). For complete details, reference the Ranchers’ Guide to 50K and on the RAAA website.
When ordering RA50K through the RAAA, the newly released “GeneSeek Genomic Profiler” will be listed on the RAAA DNA Order form as 80K Genomic Merit test. The 80K genomic data includes all the informative SNPs from the standard 50K plus Parentage, Osteopetrosis (OS), Mannosidosis (MA) testing – all for $80. When ordering PF50K through Zoetis, members complete the submission portion through Zoetis. Once the 50K test is complete Zoetis sends the data to RAAA in order for it to be incorporated into the animal’s EPDs.
18 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2013
FAQ: Can I submit a 50K test on a non-registered animal?
Answer: An animal must be registered with RAAA in order for the data from the 50K test to be incorporated into the animal’s EPDs. If you are looking to take advantage of the parentage portion of the 50K products and will be submitting samples on animals that have not yet been registered, extra steps will be needed to get the genomic data included. To ensure the correct animal is identified to the DNA results and the correct genomic data is incorporated into the EPDs, please return the results file to RAAA with registration numbers once the animals are registered. FAQ: Can I submit an animal for 50K testing that is registered with another breed association, but not registered with RAAA?
Answer: For animals that are registered with other breed associations they must be submitted for dual registration with RAAA, as we cannot blend genomic data into other breed associations’ EPDs. ■

Feeder Fax is a proven marketing tool used to draw attention to load-lot sized offerings of Red Angus-influenced cattle, or large offerings at scheduled sales, marketed via video sales, livestock markets or private treaty. The Feeder Fax breakdowns details about feeder cattle and is distributed to our active buyer base to draw added attention to our bull customers' calves.
Video Sales
Red Angus has built alliances with each of the major video auctions. Those relationships have created a tradition of success in marketing Red Angus genetics which are highlighted both onscreen and in the print catalogs. Our bull customers reap the benefits of competitive bidding when large sets of Red Angus cattle are grouped together on sale day.
Livestock Markets
Over 25 livestock markets across the nation host scheduled Red Angus Feeder Calf Sales in the fall and spring each year, with more being added annually. These sales provide a competitive advantage for our bull customers by leveraging volume offerings of Red Angus-influenced feeder cattle and drawing added buyer attention.
Our partnering livestock markets gain valuable exposure through our national advertising insertions, direct mailings promoting the sales and face-to-face producer meetings in their area. Repeatedly, these cooperating markets enjoy an increase in customers while building loyalty from Red Angus stakeholders seeking to work with marketing partners who recognize the value of Red Angus feeders.
"In our complicated world, the Red Angus marketing programs are simple, fast and easy. I only have to fill out one sheet of paper and verify the start of my calving season to gain a marketing advantage on my calves." - Will Bledsoe, Bledsoe Ranch, Hugo, CO

A match made in cyberspace by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator
Advertisements for online dating and matchmaking services inundate television and the Internet, enticing singles that they will find their soul mate through the online company’s computerized profiling methodology.
Such services also exist to find the perfect employee – or employment – in the agriculture field. Unlike online dating services, however, these agricultural employment companies do more than just match key words in a computer program. They seek to form successful employment relationships by matching an applicant’s skills and experience to an employer’s needs. Good help is hard to find
Even in today’s economy of high unemployment, finding reliable, knowledgeable ranch hands, herdsmen, feedlot employees and farm workers is a major task. After all, you can’t expect a kid from the Bronx to know how to calve heifers – or ride broncs.
The hours are long, the work is physical and most tasks take place outside in the elements. So, even if an employer is willing to train a greenhorn on the day-to-day tasks of ranching or operating a feedlot, the employee will be more likely to excel if he or
30 American Red Angus Magazine n September 2013
she has prior experience and a passion for agriculture.
Agriculture wages are also traditionally lower than other occupations which adds another obstacle in securing qualified workers. However, agriculture employers are likely to include benefits such as housing, year-end bonuses, health insurance, paid vacation and even beef for the employee’s freezer. Locating candidates with the right combination of skills, knowledge and desire to work in agriculture is a time-consuming job that most employers don’t have time to research. That’s where professional
agriculture agencies come into play as the matchmaker.
Long-term solutions require research Hansen Agri-Placement was founded in 1959 in central Nebraska in the heart of America’s agriculture industry. The company works to provide both the employer and the candidate with a long-term working relationship.
“There is a real shortage of good candidates out there,” said Eric Hansen, vice president of Hansen Agri-Placement. “But we work hard to find qualified applicants who are searching for new employment, and then match them with employers who are looking for help.” Hansen said their family-owned company checks an applicants’ work history and references, but also spends time delving into the candidate’s knowledge of agriculture.
"If candidates are interested in finding a position in production agriculture then we need to find out if their experience is with commercial or purebred cattle, feedlot or backgrounding, swine or dairy,” said Hansen, “as well as the size of the operations they were involved in. We also learn if they are able to spot, diagnose and treat sick animals, and which medicines, vaccinations and reproductive drugs they have administered.” “For farming experience,” continued Hansen, “we ask about crops they have been around and acreage, equipment they have operated – including model numbers – and then all sorts of questions regarding maintenance and mechanical, fertilizers and chemicals, irrigation and upkeep, plus different licenses or certifications they have earned."
Western North Dakota is ideal ranching country but also a hot spot for oil drilling which entices a lot of potential ranch hands to higher paying jobs in the oil patch.
How do agriculture labor wages stack up?
The Farm Labor Survey (FLS) of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports over one million people in the U.S. are employed as hired farm workers making up only one-third of all those working on farms. The remaining two-thirds are selfemployed operators and their family members. Hired farm workers continue to be one of the most economically disadvantaged groups in the United States according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. So, how do ag-related wages stack up to minimum wages and welfare?
The U.S. Department of Labor lists the federal minimum wage is $7.25. Twenty-two states have adopted the federal rate, while 19 states plus Washington, D.C., use a higher rate. Only four states report a minimum wage lower than the federal rate and five states report no minimum wage law at all. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment is tracking at 7.7 percent in 2013, down only slightly from 2012’s 8.1 percent national unemployment rate. Yet, Welfare Statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report over 40 states pay more than an $8-per-hour job and allow $1,000-per-month additional income that a welfare recipient can earn and still be enrolled in the program.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a $9.12per-hour median pay in 2010 for an agriculture worker described as one who maintains the quality of farms, crops and livestock by operating machinery and performing physical labor under the supervision of an agricultural manager. Employees who provided support activities for animal production fared a little better at $15.56 per hour. The Farm Labor Survey (FLS) of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports similar statistics, stating the 2012 average hourly earnings of non-supervisory farm laborer was $10.80 – essentially the same as five years ago in 2007.
A match made in cyberspace
Fred and Laurie Roedeske of Cartwright, N.D., enlisted Hansen’s services to hire help on their family’s commercial Red Angus cow-calf operation. Daughter Randi Joslin and son Jim help on their family’s western North Dakota ranch, but Roedeskes still needed a fulltime employee.
“It’s tough to find anybody in our country because of the oil field activity,” said Fred Roedeske. “People that might have Fred Roedeske been interested in ranch work are drawn to the high-paying positions in the oil field and that doesn’t leave us a lot of local options.”
Hansen’s service is free to candidates and, when a successful employment relationship is established, the employer pays Hansen a percentage of the first year’s wages. Ryan Smith
Roedeskes were matched with Ryan Smith originally from Buffalo, S.D., and the employment relationship is working out well.
“Eric knew we were looking for help and called us when he received Ryan’s application,” said Roedeske. “Eric’s done a good job for us and we are happy to have found someone that fits our operation so well.”

need to read between the lines to discover an applicant’s true talents.” He explained that some applicants may be highly skilled in their field, but may not have good résumé-writing abilities.
So, in addition to candidateemployer matching, Barney also offers personal coaching to applicants who need help improving their résumés, therefore increasing their employment marketability. “If necessary, I coach applicants in improving their résumés to truly reflect their skill set,” he said. “I stress that a complete, quality résumé is essential in getting a potential employer to call them.” Farm Job Search’s services are also free of charge to applicants and there is no cost to employers
until the hired applicant has successfully passed a 30-day evaluation. “We want to help employers find personnel who are better qualified than they can find on their own,” said Barney. “If a match isn’t successful, we tear up the contract and start searching again.” If the 30-day evaluation goes well, the employer pays Farm Job Search a percentage of the employee’s first year’s salary. Word of mouth, classified advertisements and unemployment offices are still viable resources for finding employees, but if ranchers, farmers and feedlot owners are looking for that perfect match of talent and passion for agriculture, it may well be worth the commitment to enlist the services of a professional. n

Young Guns learn how Preparation leads to Profitability by McKenzie Smith, RAAA Media and Public Relations Coordinator
Seedstock producers and enthusiasts from across the country joined together at the annual Young Guns Conference June 17 – 19 in Loveland, Colo., to network and learn how they could advance the reliability, trustworthiness and overall value of their seedstock for their customers – the cow-calf producers, the feeders and the packers. Co-hosted by the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) and the American Simmental Association (ASA), the three-day conference covered a wide range of beef industryrelated topics including breeding legacies, operational efficiencies, genetic testing and emerging research.
Attendees learned about current technologies and research advancements at the Young Guns Conference.
Dr. Mark Enns, assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at CSU, spoke about “Operational Efficiency ... from RFI to Profit.”
Jason Ahola, CSU assistant professor of beef production systems, explained the feed efficiency and intake research CSU is conducting at their ARDEC facility.
A common thread throughout this year’s conference presentations was learning from past lessons and applying them to present situations to ensure breeds’ continued profitability and sustained growth for the future.
Leading off the conference was Dr. Kevin Pond, animal sciences department head at Colorado State University (CSU). Pond talked about the past successes of CSU’s animal breeding program and recognized that in order to continue any breed’s legacy and sustainability, collaborative efforts and continued research – such as the Young Guns Conference – were musts.
Seedstock breeders have been faced with many production challenges, including how to remain profitable in a competitive market. Dr. Mark Enns, assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at CSU, and Larry Keenan, breed improvement director for RAAA, discussed how operational efficiency could help sustain – and if the right traits were selected – improve a breeder’s bottom line over time. Both Enns and Keenan discussed the value of incorporating feed conversion data and other routinely collected information such as weights into
38 American Red Angus Magazine n September 2013
the next generation of genetic predictions. “Data collection is the key,” said Keenan. “We need to focus on collecting high-quality data from commercial producers and seedstock operations to build up the databases for our breed associations.” Enns said genetic relationships are favorable to identify heritable traits and once breeders collect that data, associations work to translate it into EPDs through the National Cattle Evaluation.
Young Guns attendees learned about the present technologies and tools within the industry that can help them produce better beef.
One of these technologies is RA50K – Red Angus’ genomic data test that measures the reliability of traits within a herd. This information can help breeders select for desirable traits such as weaning weight or marbling, which will in turn produce a better beef end product. Building better beef is important to all breeders’ programs to ensure they are producing great-tasting beef for the consumer. Dr. Dale Woerner, assistant professor for the Center for Meat Safety and Quality in CSU’s Department of Animal Sciences discussed how the adoption of camerabased technology to assist in the assignment of quality grades to beef carcasses significantly modernizes and improves the U.S. beef grading system. Ultimately, this technology provides a “snapshot” of what great-tasting, high-quality beef looks like – all in 1/100th of a second.

Young Guns learn how Preparation leads to Profitability “We’ve demonstrated through research that marbling score does a really nice job telling us the difference in eating characteristics of beef,” said Woerner. “By using the marbling scores, this [the cameras] is a really good predictive tool to determine the overall acceptability of beef products. You truly are getting what you pay for when you pay for a higher product.”
Dr. Wade Shafer, ASA CEO, explained how selection indices serve as a tool for producers to identify traits in cattle that will increase their bottom line. He said both types of indices – retrospective and economic selection – are valuable but said economic selection indices are more accurate and likened them to genetic accounting. Retrospective indices tend to follow output traits such as weaning weight and carcass traits but don’t take into consideration
replacement female rates or cowherd and feedlot intake. “Profitability is the one trait our customers [cow-calf producers] should be most concerned with,” said Shafer. “Is it a heritable trait we can select for? We better hope so!” “The key to our success as seedstock breeders and as an industry is we need to bridge the technology gap. The cattle industry has the same science as the hog and poultry industries to utilize indices; we just don’t use them near as much as we should.” Young Guns attendees not only learned of new technologies that could help them achieve their goals, but also from a panel with years of industry experience. The panel discussed “Profit – Post Weaning” and what steps producers could take to reach their end goals.

ARDEC utilizes GrowSafe technology to monitor feed intake in their research.
Young Guns attendees toured ARDEC’s cattle-working facilities that Temple Grandin designed.
Young Guns learn how Preparation leads to Profitability One of the panelists, Kevin Miller of Briggsdale, Colo., stressed the importance of documenting genetics, health protocols and illness treatments, and how good record keeping can impact a producer’s success when he sells feeder calves. “Document everything,” said Miller. “It is going to be one of the biggest factors that cow-calf producers will have to deal with in the future. Good reputation cattle with good health records will still sell fine, but others will be discounted.”
The panel also fielded questions from the audience regarding herd health, genetics, carcass quality and how to educate customers. Attendees toured CSU’s Agriculture Research, Development and Education Center (ARDEC) and learned about their current research on feed efficiency and days to finish.
Young Guns also had the opportunity to learn from current industry practices and processes by touring the JBS – Greeley Beef Plant in Greeley, Colo., and JBS – Five Rivers Kuner Feedyard’s extensive, state-ofthe-industry cattle feedyard.
The Young Guns Conference provided a chance for producers and breeders of all ages to network, collaborate and form relationships that will enable them with the resources to build a stronger, more focused beef industry and form alliances within and across breeds. Insight into current and developing research and technology such as indices, genomic-enhanced EPDs, and feed efficiency and conversion studies, combined with cultivated relationships ensure producers have the tools to prepare now for a more profitable future. n
JBS – Five Rivers Kuner Feedyard was the final stop for the Young Guns Conference. Attendees learned about their feeding and management facilities before touring the yards.

Cowherd attributes form foundation for successful marketing by Megan Cremer, RAAA Intern
In the heart of west-central Montana, about 7 miles south of Drummond, Mont., lies the little town of Hall. This area which was largely populated with sheep in the early days is now home to a Methodist church, a café, a feed elevator, a two-room schoolhouse, a bar and a farm supply store, as well as numerous cow-calf operations. Just 1 mile outside of Hall, Red Angus cattle graze the Johnson Tuning Fork Ranch. The Johnsons’ brand, called a ‘tuning fork,’ marks each cow’s right rib.
52 American Red Angus Magazine n September 2013
Currently, Johnson Tuning Fork Ranch runs 460 mother cows on 8,000 acres of deeded land, along with leased mountain pasture. Chuck Johnson represents the fourth generation to operate the family ranch. Chuck and his wife Shelley have two children. Their son Cooper and wife Catherine reside in nearby Missoula, Mont. Their daughter Krista and her fiancé Paul Arcangeli also live in Missoula. Both kids show interest in the family ranch. Flint Creek supplies stock and irrigation water to the ranches in the valley, meandering though wide-open meadows and hillsides with timber in the higher country. Flint Creek Valley seemed promising to sustain a living producing livestock, which encouraged Frank and Sarah Johnson, Chuck’s great-grandparents, to stake their homestead in 1876; the same year General George Armstrong Custer was having his problems on the Little Big Horn in eastern Montana.
ease, hybrid vigor and carcass quality to their calf crop, the Johnsons began breeding their Hereford females to quality registered Red Angus bulls nearly 15 years ago. While adding more uniformity to their herd, Johnson claims that the Red Angus genetics also improved their cows’ udder quality and milking ability, and increased calving ease as a whole. “We emphasize calving ease to a large extent, and I think that has paid dividends. More of the first-time heifers would produce a calf on their own, unassisted,” said Johnson. The ability of a heifer to successfully deliver her first calf unassisted plays a significant role in the Johnsons’ female culling process. “Having a female that delivers a calf unassisted is extremely important,” said Johnson. “If a female has any significant problems, we usually don’t keep them. We want a cowherd that, as they age, are going to be problem-free.”
Chuck and Shelley Johnson are the fourth generation on their family’s ranch.

Cowherd attributes form foundation for successful marketing The Johnson Tuning Fork Ranch experienced an extraordinary calving year in 2012. With the exception of one, Johnsons did not have to assist any births in the cows three years or older. “That’s what we strive for,” stated Johnson. Consistency is key on the Tuning Fork Ranch. “We have developed a set of criteria that we try to use every year. We don’t try to bounce around too much. Calving ease is important to us and we think that’s one really positive affect that Red Angus has had. And we do think that the disposition has been good. We look at the marbling and ribeye EPDs also,” remarked Johnson. Farming is kept to a minimum at the Johnson Tuning Fork Ranch. The hay ground is comprised of small amounts of alfalfa, sanfoin and clover, along with mixed grasses such as brome, timothy and orchardgrass. Only one cutting of hay is harvested from the 700 acres of hay ground, even though the land is capable of producing two. The re-growth is set aside for grazing during the fall and winter months. All of the 700 acres of hay ground is flood irrigated using sod-bottomed ditches and plastic dams. Flood irrigating appears to be fairly successful; on an average year, the Johnson Tuning Fork Ranch sees impressive grass hay yields in the neighborhood of 2.75 tons per acre. Johnson credits Butch Friede, a 32-year employee and ranch foreman, with a strong role in the success of the ranch. Friede is very good at resolving animal health care issues and also aids Johnson in the selection of seedstock. “When we go to select bulls, we go together. We have developed a set of criteria and are very like-minded,” said Johnson. When asked to describe the ideal cow, Johnson described several areas of focus. “Well, I think No. 1, the ideal cow would have a good disposition. She would obviously be fertile to where she would conceive in her first year, and have a 70-to-80-lb. calf unassisted. She would reach a mature
54 American Red Angus Magazine n September 2013
weight of 1250-to-1300 lbs. – not super heavy – and have a moderate frame.” The steer calves attain approximately 650 lbs. when shipped nine months after birth. Johnsons focus on feed efficiency and stayability, and from the perspective of fleshing ability and longevity, give limited inputs. “We have one cow that’s 13 years old. She is probably the best one. She still produces a good calf that she keeps by her side all the time. She’s not one that gets riled up and, the last two years at least, we have kept heifers from her that look just like her,” Shelley remarked. In 2010, the Johnsons sold their steer calves to a feeder in Pocahontas, Iowa. The fat steers’ carcass data was submitted for consideration of GridMaster status and was a huge success. With a staggering overall score of 191, 97 percent of their steers went Choice, and of those Choice steers, 35 percent rose to Prime. Thirty-nine percent of the steers yielded 1s or 2s, and only 13 percent yielded 4s or 5s. “It showed us that we must be on the right track,” said Johnson. “It was a photograph of that particular group of cattle that year, but our program is so uniform from year to year, our inputs have been nearly identical every year. The only thing that changes is that we’re getting more Red Angus genetics into the cowherd each year.” 2010 was the sole year that Johnsons’ calves were entered in the GridMaster. With phenomenal success in 2010, they are eager to enter their cattle again.
Johnsons choose to use the combination panel FCCP tag and EID button to guarantee age, source and genetics in their Red Angus herd.

Cowherd attributes form foundation for successful marketing The Johnsons employ several marketing techniques in order to capitalize on available premiums. Along with the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP), the Johnsons utilize the Verified Beef Non-Hormone Treated Cattle Program, and market their steers and heifers as “all natural.” A large portion of the hormone-free and antibiotic-free beef product is ultimately marketed to Europe, with the exception of 2011, when Johnson beef was carried by Whole Food Stores. Just one year after winning the GridMaster Award, Johnson was approached by the Cross 4 Ranch, who showed interest in marketing Johnson’s hormone-and-antibiotic-free cattle to Whole Foods Stores. In order to sell his beef product to Whole Foods Stores, Johnson was required to comply with a special training for humane handling practices conducted by Global Animal Partnership. After complying with the various requirements, Johnsons enjoyed the opportunity to have their beef marketed by Whole Foods Stores. Combining wise management and mar-
keting with quality cattle, Johnson Tuning Fork Ranch is a self-sufficient operation. After Chuck and Shelley married, they lived in Great Falls where Johnson worked as an attorney until 2004. They then moved back to the family ranch after having acquired a majority of the ranch shares owned by Johnson’s extended family. “More accurately, I’ve always believed that this has to be a standalone operation. Frankly, I don’t like to borrow money, and I don’t like to take money that I have earned as an attorney to help keep the ranch afloat.” This management attitude has proven that Angus-influenced cattle can set the stage for a profitable and sustainable ranching lifestyle. The Johnsons have observed an indirect approval of their Red Angus genetics from their darker-hided neighbors. Keeping bulls at bay during breeding season is a challenge, and adjacent Angus producers will experience the occasional red calf sired by one of Johnsons’ bulls. Johnson recalls the neighbors have

Get it right with preconditioning and low-stress handling by Sheyna Strommen for American Red Angus Magazine
Outside of birth, weaning is the most stressful time in a calf’s life.
There’s just a lot going on at weaning time – the cow’s milk supply is reduced, some cattle are being relocated from mountainsides to valley floors and many others are being comingled.
North American ranchers have talked about preparing their livestock to succeed in that phase for decades, but it – preconditioning – remains a critical time to “get it right” in a calf’s life. According to John Maas, DVM and Veterinarian/Specialist in Cooperative Extension for the University of California, Davis, “getting it right” means minimizing stress, providing adequate nutrition and allowing the calf’s immune system plenty of time to work so the calf can be protected from the pathogens it could encounter later in life.
Maas explained the importance of each in the Beef Quality Assurance’s video “Stockmanship and Stewardship: Creating and managing movement is the key to effective cattle handling.” The video provides 75minutes-worth of tips for improving low-stress cattle handling techniques – in nearly every phase of production. The video also included advice from experts Temple Grandin of Colorado, Curt Pate of Montana and Ron Gill of Texas.
As far as preconditioning is concerned, Maas said it takes a calf’s immune system at least 14 days to show a response after a vaccine is administered. A booster is needed at 28 days. It can be as long as 42 days from the day vaccination is administered to the time that the calf’s immune system has developed a protective immunity. “Forty-two days is the absolute minimum,” he explained. “Sixty-five days is much better.”

Get it right with preconditioning and low-stress handling Another important aspect of the preconditioning phase is providing proper nutrition. The calves are transitioning from a predominantly milk-centered diet to one based on forage and grains. “We must ensure that there’s enough nutrition, protein, trace minerals and vitamins to nourish the calf,” he added.

In many beef cattle operations, calves are introduced to the working facilities in this preconditioning phase and this initial foray into the crowding tub, alleyway and squeeze chute or head catch can have an effect on a ranch’s profitability. This is where low-stress cattle handling techniques can help those cattle succeed later on down the road.
“Preconditioning prepares the calf and its immunity, but it can also be a benefit for teaching cattle how to go through a working system,” said Pate, a rancher from Montana, who is also featured on the video. “The better they know how to work through a system, the easier it is on them and the people who are handling them.” “The benefits [of low-stress cattle handling] are too many to mention,” he said. “It’s the one thing that you can do on your ranch that you don’t have to spend money on that will increase your profitability. All it takes is a little time, energy and thinking about what you’re doing.”
Pate, who conducts demonstrations and clinics on stockmanship, colt starting, horsemanship and safety all across the country, added, “Reduced stress means increased profit for sure – not only in weight gains, but in less sickness and fewer injuries to cattle and people.” Developing a low-stress cattle handling system requires some basic knowledge of cattle behavior: 1) Cattle want to see you. 2) Cattle want to go around you. 3) Cattle want to be with and will go to other cattle. 4) Cattle can only process one main thought at a time.

Get it right with preconditioning and low-stress handling Gill, an AgriLife Extension Specialist from Texas, utilizes low-stress cattle handling techniques on his personal ranch to capture economic benefits through reduced sickness, reduced labor and improved weight gains. He maintains that the only way to work cattle quickly is slowly, and said when using horses to gather cattle in a pasture, the only speeds you need are walking or trotting. Loping out to the cattle is fine, but be sure to slow down before you get to them so you don’t impart unnecessary stress. Creating and managing movement is key to effective cattle handling. To accomplish this, the experts recommended applying pressure when cattle have a place to go and releasing that pressure when they’ve begun to head in the right direction.
This pressure should be applied from the side – not from behind, unless it is absolutely necessary. That may be a departure from our natural instincts as ranchers, but applying side pressure is much more effective (see principles 1 and 2 on page 70). It allows the cattle, if they’re comfortable with you, to move in a straight line past you. The experts also recommended going with the flow of cattle to slow them down or to stop them, and moving against the flow of cattle to initiate or accelerate their movement. The benefits of this can be easily seen in an alleyway, where cattle tend to advance toward the squeeze chute when you’re walking from the squeeze chute to the tub.
All in all, cattle work best when they are ready. It’s up to ranchers to get them prepared. Using these basic concepts help train livestock to effortlessly go where we want them to go. It minimizes stress on them – and the working crew. n
