USDA Issues Final Rule for Animal Disease Traceability

Animal Disease Traceability and how it affects Red Angus Breeders is the topic of this month’s column. Our Association has: one, monitored and made comment on this subject with USDA; two, worked to have flexibility in database development to accommodate all forms of official ID used for/by Red Angus producers; and three, is working with members in states with special requirements or uses for ID. The press release by USDA is reprinted for your information. WASHINGTON, December 20, 2012—The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced a final rule establishing general regulations for improving the traceability of U.S. livestock moving interstate.

"With the final rule announced today, the United States now has a flexible, effective animal disease traceability system for livestock moving interstate, without undue burdens for ranchers and U.S. livestock businesses," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "The final rule meets the diverse needs of the countryside where states and tribes can develop systems for tracking animals that work best for them and their producers, while addressing any gaps in our overall disease response efforts. Over the past several years, USDA has listened carefully to America's farmers and ranchers, working collaboratively to establish a system of tools and safeguards that will help us target when and where animal diseases occur, and help us respond quickly." Under the final rule, unless specifically exempted, livestock moved interstate would have to be officially identified and accompanied by an interstate certificate of veterinary inspection or other documentation, such as owner-shipper statements or brand certificates. Keep in mind the initial ADT ruling , in regard to cattle, only effects adult cattle at this time (18 months and older). After considering the public comments received, the final rule has several differences from the proposed rule issued in August 2011. These include:

Accepting the use of brands, tattoos and brand registration as official identification

6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2013

when accepted by the shipping and receiving States or Tribes.

Permanently maintaining the use of backtags as an alternative to official eartags for cattle and bison moved directly to slaughter. Accepting movement documentation other than an Interstate Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (ICVI) for all ages and classes of cattle when accepted by the shipping and receiving States or Tribes.

Clarifying that all livestock moved interstate to a custom slaughter facility are exempt from the regulations. Exempting chicks moved interstate from a hatchery from the official identification requirements.

Beef cattle under 18 months of age, unless they are moved interstate for shows, exhibitions, rodeos, or recreational events, are exempt from the official identification requirement in this rule. These specific traceability requirements for this group will be addressed in separate rulemaking, allowing APHIS to work closely with industry to ensure the effective implementation of the identification requirements. For more specific details about the regulation and how it will affect producers, visit www.aphis.usda.gov/traceability.

Animal disease traceability, or knowing where diseased and at-risk animals are, where they've been, and when, is very important to ensure a rapid response when animal disease events take place. An efficient and accurate animal disease traceability system helps reduce the number of animals involved in an investigation, reduces the time needed to respond, and decreases the cost to producers and the government.

Planning ahead, for the rule by producers may keep it from becoming a burden and allow cattle to move at the speed of commerce, prepare the U.S to be competitive in the global market place and provide domestic consumers the peace of mind that the U.S. is producing the safest meat supply in the world. ■

Association Commentary

by Greg Comstock, RAAA CEO

As RAAA completes its 1st quarter of genomic enhanced EPDs, RAAA staff has fielded many questions regarding the application of this technology – specifically its impact on EPDs. Following are some of the more prevalent questions we’ve fielded from our membership.

Can breeders compare animals with genomically enhanced EPDs to those that have EPDs that are not genomically enhanced? Red Angus EPDs that include 50K (genomic) data are comparable to bulls whose EPDs do not include 50K data. But, understand that because you are comparing EPDs based on different information, the accuracies of the EPDs will also be different. That said, comparing EPDs of varied accuracy due to dissimilar information is nothing new for Red Angus breeders. For instance: • We have long compared the BW EPDs of an ET calf that does not get the benefit of his individual performance to a natural calf whose BW EPD is influenced by his within contemporary group variation (ratio). The ET calf will have a lower accuracy EPD, because it is based solely on pedigree. • For the past 15 years Red Angus breeders have compared the MARB, REA and FAT EPDs of potential AI sires: Some sires have progeny with actual harvest (carcass) data in addition to progeny with ultrasound records, while others only have progeny with ultrasound data. Because harvest data is much more informative than ultrasound data, those sires’ carcass EPD accuracies will be significantly higher. Are breeders who utilize genomic data submitting 50K tests for complete contemporary groups? The Red Angus 50K tests count identified gene effects, so their impact on the EPD calculation works independent of the other animals that were in the same contem-

8 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2013

porary group. Again, if we think about it, Red Angus breeders have some familiarity; “We don’t have to know the hair coat color of every other animal in the contemporary group to know a red one has two copies of the recessive gene for red coat color”. Similarly, because molecular breeding values collected through a 50K DNA test only apply to the animal for which they were collected, they do not exert any impact on other animals in the contemporary group.

In this regard, genomic data differs from performance data – the impact of which is based on variation of the collected phenotype (birth weight, rib eye area, yearling weight, etc.) from the contemporary group average. Do I test every bull or can I just test the few I might want to use? That is an individual decision and certainly at $75 per test, cost is a consideration. Based on the previous answer we know that we can test five out of 100 bulls, and we will learn more about those five bulls’ genetic merit, but we also know we won’t learn anything (good or bad) about those not tested. Commercial ranchers don’t look at EPD accuracy anyway, so what is the benefit of testing range bulls? Whether the ranchers who purchase the bulls look at accuracy or not, seedstock suppliers will know that the EPDs being reviewed are higher accuracy, so they are still helping producers make better informed decisions. ■

Marketing Update Understanding the True Value of the FCCP The easing of export restrictions for U.S. beef going into Japan has created a lot of questions in the industry about the value of Age Verification supplied by USDA Age and Source Verification (ASV) programs.

Previously, Japan required American beef to be harvested from cattle 20 months of age or less. But this spring, that restriction has been eased to 30 months or less. That simply means the vast majority of cattle can now be eligible for export to Japan. This is a huge win for the industry, but perhaps a loss of premiums for progressive cattlemen who have been utilizing ASV programs since their inception in 2005. Red Angus bull customers are familiar with the FCCP’s Yellow Tag and

its ability to USDA Verify, not only Age and Source, but its original purpose…Genetics. For nearly two decades, the FCCP has been identifying Red Angus sired cattle, verifying 50% Red Angus bloodlines and paving the way for red hided calves to access “Angus” premiums.

You may be asking if continuing to enroll your calves in the FCCP is of any value? The truth is that while the premiums paid for the Age verification will at the least be drastically reduced, the real value of the FCCP has proven to be the Genetic and Source Verification. Feeders have proven time and again the value they place in knowing both where their cattle originated (Source) and that they are “Certified” Red Angus (Genetics). Far beyond the simple Age Verification, the FCCP identifies cattle with the bred in traits that feeders are aggressively searching for.

The FCCP is a clear signal for buyers targeting cattle that originate from breeding programs utilizing registered Red Angus bulls. Strengthening their confidence in cattle that have quiet dispositions, improved feed conversion leading to fewer days on feed, unsurpassed consistency and carcass quality. Enrolling your calves in the FCCP builds buyer confidence by verifying your use of quality bulls from a progressive seedstock supplier. Take advantage of the industry’s original added value program and its proven track record. Before your calves hit the market, be sure they are wearing the FCCP’s Yellow Tag and capture the value of Red Angus! ■

Report Fall 2012 Weaning Data It’s time to report weaning data for the Fall 2012 calf crop. Postcards were sent out on March 15th for the Fall 2012 weaning worksheets to comply with the THR calendar.

Data can be reported electronically via Member Data-REDS at Redangus.org. Once logged on, click on New Registrations to submit the data. Fall 2012 weaning worksheets will only be mailed upon request. Please contact RAAA National Office ASAP for printed worksheets. What is the NCE? The NCE (National Cattle Evaluation) is the biannual process through which RAAA calculates EPDs for animals in the RAAA database. The EPDs that result from this process are typically released in January (Spring EPDs) and July/August (Fall EPDs) each year.

International Birth Year Code for 2013 The International Birth Year code for animal identification for 2013 is A. International letters are designated to identify the year in which an animal was born. Examples of Animal IDs using the International Birth Year code: 254A or A45.

Spring 2012 No Progeny Reports Due No progeny reports are due April 15, 2013. If the information is not received in the National Office by the deadline, each cow without a report is subject to inactivation. Progeny or a reason code can be reported via Member Data-REDS Steps for Member Data-REDS 1. Log in 2. Click RRTS Registration/Performance Updates 3. No Progeny Report for 2012. A printed No Progeny report will be mailed upon member request. Please

request reports as soon as possible.

Spring calving females will be inactivated on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. Members will have the opportunity to reactivate females from May 28 to July 1, 2013 without being charged a reactivation fee. After July 1, 2013 charges will be applied to reactivate females.

Please DO NOT use the No Progeny Report for 2013 born calves because the record for 2013 does not cover the lack of THR compliance for 2012.

Hair must be placed inside a sample card For quality control, hair follicles must be placed inside the hair card before the samples are sent to the National Office. 50K submissions When submitting samples for 50K testing to Zoetis (Pfizer), it is important to submit the registration number of the animal on the 50K order form. Without the registration number, RAAA cannot import the 50K data into the database and therefore the genomic data will not be incorporated into the animal’s EPDs.

Genetic Defect Testing RAAA Rules and Regulations require AI sires and E.T. parents be tested for genetic defects. When this is not possible, it is an option to test the resulting offspring without testing the parent. Examples: • If an AI sire is not tested for OS and semen is rare or not available, a better option might be to test his progeny for OS. • Donor Dam was not tested for OS and is no longer available. Note that this ONLY applies to genetic defect testing requirements. In most cases however, it is more economically relevant to submit a sample of the parent instead of testing each and every calf, but submitting the calf is an option. ■

12 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2013

Fall NCE Deadlines In order to be included in the Fall NCE run, data must be submitted by: • May 6th for paper data • May 13th for electronic data

Spring Heifer Exposure Inventory

The Heifer Exposure Inventory Report will be mailed out May 15, 2013. The purpose of collecting heifer exposure data is for the Heifer Pregnancy EPD (HPG), a trait that is economically important to our commercial customers.

The heifer exposure inventory is for yearling heifers 9-17 months of age, and requires members to indicate: • Breeding season start and end dates • Exposure information • Management group designation • Disposal information Management group designations are used to distinguish females that were provided different opportunities to become pregnant. Just a few examples of such include: • Differences in nutrition • Pasture vs. Dry-lot development • AI only vs. AI plus clean up bull, etc. • One breeding pasture given 25 day bull exposure vs. another given 60 day bull exposure. Remember, RAAA does not require palpation records, only whether or not they were exposed to breeding. Please return by August 15, 2013.

Highlights of Past Junior Red Angus Association Members

Cortney (Bowden) Bally In the years since serving on the JRA Board of Directors and receiving JRA scholarships, I have lived in three new states outside of my home in Wisconsin and currently reside in Minnesota working for Hormel Foods. The journey that led me to Hormel began with my leadership roles through the JRA and growing up in production agriculture. I began my college career with two years in Hutchinson, Kansas at Hutchinson Community College (HCC) as a member of the livestock judging team where I was fortunate enough to make the Junior College AllAmerican Team. From there, my journey led me to Kansas State University (KSU) where I completed a Food Science degree with an Animal Science minor. While at KSU, my ties to the livestock industry continued as a member of the Collegiate Cattlewomen organization serving as public relations coordinator with the main task of educating the youth around Manhattan and the consumers with the roll out of the

Flat Iron steak. To further diversify my studies, I interned with CargillKitchen Solutions in Monticello, Minn., working with eggs and further processing, and I traveled to Europe and Mexico for short courses through HCC and KSU.

Upon graduation in 2007, I accepted a quality control engineer position with Hormel Foods in Rochelle, Ill. During my time in Rochelle, I met my husband, Adam Bally. In 2009, we relocated to Austin, Minn., for an opportunity for my career moving into the fresh pork sales division. In the Spring of 2011, I finished my Masters in Agribusiness from Kansas State writing my thesis on Hormel’s advertisement price forecast accuracy. In 2012, I was given the opportunity to advance again within the sales division to a National Accounts Manager with some key regional and national customers. Last but certainly not least in the summer of 2012, we welcomed Brooke Caitlyn into our family. She has been a lot of fun

so far, and we are very blessed to have her.

I remain active with Red Angus with a group of Red Angus cows that are mixed in with my father’s group at Bowden Red Angus, and I still help manage the registration piece of that business. Adam trains Labrador Retrievers, and we now have Bally’s Gun Dogs as well with our own core of labs. Although, my focus is not as much in production agriculture as it once was, I still work in the agriculture industry and the lessons learned and instilled in me through the JRA have been instrumental in my success. Thank you to the JRA and RAAA for your support through the years and through the scholarship program. ■

Fast Facts About Agriculture

by Chelsea Tomascik, Marketing Programs Coordinator

As stated in previous articles, facts can be the best tool to promote the industry to someone not familiar with agriculture or farming/ranching. Whether you want to tweet one of these tidbits or stop someone at the grocery store, here are some worthwhile facts you can use in your everyday agricultural advocacy efforts.

• 2.2 million farms dot America’s rural landscape. About 97 percent of U.S. farms are operated by families – individuals, family partnerships or family corporations. • Farm and ranch families comprise just 2 percent of the U.S. population.

• More than 21 million American workers (15 percent of the total U.S. workforce) produce, process and sell the nation’s food and fiber. • Today’s farmers produce 262 percent more food with 2 percent fewer inputs (labor, seeds, feed, fertilizer, etc.), compared with 1950. • In 2010, $115 billion worth of American agricultural products were exported around the world. The United States sells more food and fiber to world markets than we import, creating a positive agricultural trade balance. • One in three U.S. farm acres is planted for export.

• 31 percent of U.S. gross farm income comes directly from exports. • About 23 percent of raw U.S. farm products are exported each year.

• Farmers and ranchers receive only 16 cents out of every dollar spent on food at home and away from home. The rest goes for costs beyond the farm gate: wages and materials for production, processing, marketing, transportation and distribution. In 1980, farmers and ranchers received 31 cents.

• U.S. farm programs typically cost each American just pennies per meal and account for less than one-half of 1 percent of the total U.S. budget. • Americans enjoy a food supply that is abundant, affordable overall and among the world’s safest, thanks in large part to the efficiency and productivity of America’s farm and ranch families. Agriculture and the Environment

• Careful stewardship by farmers has spurred a nearly 50 percent decline in erosion of cropland by wind and water since 1982.

• Conservation tillage, a way of farming that reduces erosion (soil loss) on cropland while using less energy, has grown from 17 percent of acreage in 1982 to 63 percent today. At the same time, total land used for crops declined by 15 percent (70 million acres).

• Farmers have enrolled a total of 31 million acres in the Conservation Reserve Program to protect the environment and provide habitat for wildlife. Since its inception in 1985, the program has helped reduce soil erosion by 622 million tons and restored more than 2 million acres of wetlands.

18 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2013

• Farmers, ranchers and other landowners have installed more than 2 million miles of conservation buffers under farm bill initiatives. Buffers improve soil, air and water quality; enhance wildlife habitat; and create scenic landscapes.

• Each year, hundreds of thousands of trees are planted on farmland.

• More than half of America’s farmers intentionally provide habitat for wildlife. Deer, moose, fowl and other species have shown significant population increases for decades. • Through the farm bill, funding is provided to farmers and ranchers for conservation, for programs that prevent soil erosion, preserve and restore wetlands, clean the air and water, and enhance wildlife. • Crop rotation, the practice of growing different crops in succession on the same land, is another way farmers take care of the land.

• For contour farming, farmers plant crops across the slope of the land to conserve water and protect soil.

• Alternative energy sources, including wind power and renewable fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel (made from corn, soybeans and other crops) are beneficial to the environment and promote energy security. Source: American Farm Bureau Federation

Three Herds, Three Breeding Programs... All Benefit from A.I. by Lindsay Johnson, Genex Cooperative, Inc.

Producers using artificial insemination (A.I.) in their herds reap the benefits of genetic improvements, a consistent calf crop and increased pounds at weaning. Maybe you’ve thought about the idea but aren’t sure what’s involved or how you would implement A.I. into your herd. Read how three operations successfully incorporated A.I. into their programs and will never turn back. Stacking A.I. Pedigrees In the rolling hills of the Ozarks, J.W. Phillips, Phillips Land & Cattle, runs a commercial herd of red SimAngus™ and Balancer cattle. In this environment, selecting for adaptability is key since heat, humidity and fescue are major concerns. This is a no-nonsense operation where cattle need to be easy fleshing, heat tolerant and make do without any supplemental nutrition. As J.W. simply states, “This ranch raises grass and the cattle are the vehicles used to utilize the grass. If I have to supplement them, it becomes cost prohibitive.”

These producers have successfully incorporated A.I. into their breeding programs and today reap the benefits. A.I. is providing them with reduced labor costs (as a result of timed-A.I. protocols and Genex chute-side service), tighter calving seasons, superior replacement females and increased profits from greater consistency in marketing feeder cattle.

J.W. has been utilizing A.I. for seven years. He has been extremely pleased with the results of having 60% of his calves born in the first 14 days of the calving season. As he builds the genetics of his replacement heifers, stacking generations of A.I. pedigrees, he sees A.I. remaining a critical part of his program for years to come. “Too many people look at the dollar amount associated with A.I. and don’t consider the advantages of the better genetics which can be utilized,” stated J.W. “A.I. pays for itself in the earlier born calves and the additional growth those calves have. The A.I. calves have an additional two weeks of growth times $1.75 per pound, and you’ll see it pays for itself. In that respect it’s cheap.”

22 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2013

Not only do the A.I. calves have extra pounds on them, this is also the group from which replacements are retained. J.W. picks only those born in the first cycle to be replacements in his herd, expecting them to be more fertile than the others due to the fact their mothers conceived in the first cycle. Each year 400 cows, first and second calvers, along with 350 heifers are A.I. bred. The calving season is split between spring and fall which spreads the labor, use of clean up bulls and marketability. Because he A.I. breeds his younger cows, fewer calving ease bulls are required for clean up which allows him to use more terminal sires on the older cows. He utilizes red halfbloods on his mature cow herd for added fertility (HPG), longevity (STAY) and lower maintenance costs (ME) – capturing the value of maternal heterosis. When getting started with A.I., J.W. knew cattle handling facilities were necessary. Each of his cattle handling facilities is setup with the Bud box concept, designed by Bud Williams. This system aids in gently handling cattle to limit injuries and blemishes on the carcass as well as future disposition problems. “By having a facility that allows for easy flow of animals it limits injuries to not only the cattle, but people as well,” explained J.W.

Three Herds, Three Breeding Programs – All Benefit from A.I. A.I. allows J.W. to select for the traits he feels will be suited for the future of his herd as well as best match the environment. He selects for below average frame and milk to use on young cows because he worries about his replacements having too much milk or being too big. Adequate growth and carcass along with good feet, legs and udders are essential for the Ozark environment.

FIXED-TIME AI (TAI)

“I rely on Genex to provide me with advice on the synchronization protocol to use for my A.I. program,” stated J.W. “This year we tried the 5-day CIDR® protocol on cows and the 14-day CIDR protocol on heifers.” Genex provides chute-side service at Phillips Land & Cattle, offering consulting service on facility design, synchronization protocols and genetics. They work closely with J.W. to provide the service needed to get cows and heifers pregnant.

“For those considering A.I., I would suggest getting started with only a small portion of your herd,” informed J.W. “When looking at the protocols to use, the timed A.I. protocol requires no heat detection therefore reducing labor. And above all, I would suggest contacting a professional A.I. service to assist you with the program.

Three Herds, Three Breeding Programs – All Benefit from A.I. Their knowledge and expertise is invaluable as you begin to tailor a program to fit your requirements.”

A Passion for Red Randy Meyer has a passion for the color red, his pastures are filled with red cattle and machine sheds with red tractors. A grain farmer in Brunswick, Mo., Randy has learned A.I. provides him with the best genetics available, a uniform calf crop and saves him time so he can get back to the fields.

“I began using A.I. five years ago because I wanted to increase the genetic value of my herd,” stated Randy. “The A.I. calves are more uniform and born in a shorter timeframe which makes my life a little easier.” The A.I. group consists of 80 heifers and 50 first-calf heifers. Since his first-calf heifers are still sorted off from the rest of the cows, they are an easy group to catch and breed.

Calving season begins February 1 with 78% of the heifers calving in the first 21 days.

“When I first considered A.I., I consulted Genex to find out how to get started,” commented Randy. “They have been extremely helpful in teaching us the steps of the project and always provide me with a calendar of exactly what needs to be completed. Genex trained my nephew, Steve, and me to install the CIDRs and administer shots. They also trained Steve to A.I., and he assists the Genex crew on breeding day.” High genetic value service sires are purchased to follow up A.I. Randy said, “With fewer bulls to purchase for clean up, I can select higher genetic sires that would have been out of my price range if I was purchasing sires for the entire herd.” Randy used TNTS Bank Statement T272 as an A.I. sire and really liked daughters that were going back into

26 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2013

his herd as replacements. This past year he used GenChoice™ sexed semen on his heifers, breeding his heifers to have Bank Statement heifer calves. Randy markets bred heifers through the Missouri Red Angus sale and is proud to say his A.I. bred commercial heifers have topped the sale! “It’s a lot easier to sell A.I. bred heifers because the customer knows exactly when they are going to calve

Three Herds, Three Breeding Programs – All Benefit from A.I. and the genetics they are purchasing,” stated Randy. “People will pay more for an A.I. heifer than a bull bred one.”

He markets his steers through a special feeder calf auction to capture the genetic value of these calves. For the past three years the same buyer has purchased them, averaging $3-5 per 100 weight higher than blacks.

The advantages of A.I. have paid off in Randy’s herd, at the feedlot and for his customers who are purchasing bred heifers. It has allowed him to increase the genetic value of his red cattle and given him the time to get back on the red tractor. “Genex provides me with professional A.I. service and is with me every step of the way,” stated Randy. “The key to a successful A.I. project is working with a professional company. If I wouldn’t have consulted with them from the beginning, my herd wouldn’t be where it is today.”

Generations of Known A.I. With many years experience utilizing A.I., Wilbur and Elsie Spreutels along with sons Steve and Eugene, run a herd of Red Angus commercial cows with known generations of A.I. Even though their Koshkonong, Mo. farm has a large number of commercial cows, they keep amazing records on every one. As you sit at their kitchen table, the Spreutels can produce a file for every cow on the place! Preparation plays a major factor in the success of A.I. at Spreutels. Each heifer is weighed and must meet a minimum of 650 pounds and at least 14 months of age in order to be included in the A.I. group.

Each year 300 head of heifers and cows are A.I. bred; like many others in this region half are spring calving with the other half calving in the fall. The Spreutels learned early on that having a good facility was essential; it didn’t have to be fancy, just functional. At their operation a good cor-

28 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2013

ral system is in place, the corral leads up to a working chute with scale underneath. “We realize A.I. does take a bit of time to prepare for,” stated Wilbur.

Three Herds, Three Breeding Programs – All Benefit from A.I. “However, we’re getting to choose from the best selection of bulls in the country and utilize higher accuracy sires.” They select for carcass and growth bulls because they finish out their own cattle. Cattle go through the Meyer Natural Angus program and receive a premium, which varies according to yield and grade, and an additional $15 per head for wearing the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program tag when slaughtered. Their superb record

keeping abilities allows them to turn in birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight and carcass data to the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) and Genex. The Spreutels serve as a Genex progeny test herd, providing data on calves which are the result of random matings to Genex young sires.

Spreutels are six-time award winners of the prestigious GridMaster Award that recognized them for breeding and owning cattle that meet and exceed strict carcass quality specifica-

FIXED-TIME AI (TAI)

tions. Cattle must be a minimum of 85% Choice or higher, maximum of 15% Yield Grad 4s and minimum grid score of 100.

By utilizing A.I. they have built a marketing equity for their replacement heifers. In past years they have marketed bred heifers through the Missouri Show-Me-Select program and sale. This program requires the heifer’s sire to meet minimum EPD accuracies for calving ease, weaning weight, carcass weight and marbling. Over the years their cattle have built a reputation for themselves, and bred heifers are now sold via private treaty. As synchronization protocols have changed throughout the years, the Spreutels have changed with them. In past years, they used paint sticks and spent three days watching for heats.

Three Herds, Three Breeding Programs – All Benefit from A.I. Today, they utilize timed A.I. protocols, which has eliminated any labor previously needed for heat detecting. The 14-day CIDR protocol is used on heifers and 7-day CIDR protocol used with cows.

“Utilizing the 14-day CIDR protocol on the heifers allows us to administer pre-breeding vaccines and dewormer when the CIDRs are installed since it is 33 days before breeding, stated Wilbur. “This saves us a trip through the chute. Wilbur and Elsie suggest starting with a small group of heifers if you will be A.I. breeding for the first time.

“Start small and work your way up each year, recommend the Spreutels. “We also want to stress the importance of following the synchronization protocol to a tee. We rely on Genex to assist us with our synchronization program, after all, they do

this all the time and we only A.I. twice a year!

On breeding day Genex pulls in the yard with a crew of people who work as a well oiled machine to execute the project quickly and quietly without disrupting the day-to-day tasks on the farm. These producers have successfully

incorporated A.I. into their breeding programs and today reap the benefits. A.I. is providing them with reduced labor costs (as a result of timed-A.I. protocols and Genex chute-side service), tighter calving seasons, superior replacement females and increased profits from greater consistency in marketing feeder cattle. To put it plainly, A.I. is adding profits to their bottom line! â–

Thank You ~~ for the support over the past 40 years in the Seedstock Business.

Nebraska Research - Using Reds to Improve Returns for Ranchers by Jennifer Noble, RAAA Communications Director

Nebraska, known historically as ‘The Beef State” is home to the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL). While the UNL Animal Science Department takes a handson approach to all elements of animal agriculture and has many facilities across the state, the resulting research data spreads over borders increasing awareness, education and affecting production practices industry wide. The UNL multi-unit research efforts include four different beef cattle herds, plus a working dairy, a 2,000-headcapacity beef feedlot, a 325-head-sow farrow to-finish swine unit, an individual cattle feeding barn and two feed mills.

Nebraska Research Using Reds to Improve Returns for Ranchers

The former Rafter C Ranch – gifted to the University of Nebraska Foundation in 1978 by Elmer “Pete” and Abbie Gudmundsen and now known as the Gudmundsen Sand Hills Lab (GSL) – could not be more effectively located to provide some of the industry’s most effective and useful research data. Long have the Sandhills of Nebraska been known as “cow country” with Cherry County being the Nation’s No. 1 cow county as home to nearly 166,000 cows.

Home to the UNL’s largest cowherd, the University runs nearly 700 Red Angus and Simmental crossbred females at the Gudmundsen ranch located near Whitman, Neb., in Cherry County and spreading into the neighboring Grant and Hooker Counties encompassing nearly 13,000 acres. The 5/8 Red Angus x 3/8 Simmental cowherd maintained at GSL is the foundation for the Beef Systems research with which Dr. Rick Funston is actively involved. Finishing of the steer calves harvested from the cowherd is done at the West Central Research and Extension Center (WCREC) at North Platte, Neb., another of the UNL research facilities.

Dr. Funston is a North Dakota native who holds a BS from North Dakota State University, a Master’s from Montana State University, with a PH.D from the University of Wyoming and performed post-doctoral work at Colorado State University. For the past 10 years, Funston has been with the UNL and 60% of his time is spent as an Extension Specialist and 40% addressing cow-calf reproductive issues unique to beef producers. UNL and Funston implement production practices to effectively study Beef Systems Management in order to look for opportunities to help beef cattle producers be more profitable. Research is wide and varied including topics such as fetal programming, effects of calving date on economic return, weaning date studies and grazing and supplementation practices resulting in long-term production results. A countless number of research papers and documents have been the result of the work done at UNL. They are so vast and detailed that complete results would fill a library.

Nebraska Research Using Reds to Improve Returns for Ranchers

The fetal programming work is some of the most intriguing to date. The study shows the effects of gestational nutrition and how it impacts not only feed efficiency long term, but also the carcass characteristics of steers. The study would suggest pregnant cows not supplemented on winter grass would have lasting effects on the fetus including: reproduction and feed efficiency in heifer calves, carcass weight, quality grade, average daily gain, and herd health in steer progeny.

The Heifer Development work done at GSL and WCREC offers an insight into many of the production practices affecting today’s cattle producers. Developing heifers to fit into their long-term environment and thrive in varying conditions is something on which a great deal of time and effort has been spent. As is no surprise to most, the nations cowherd is at its lowest since the 1950s and yet beef production is meeting the demands and at an alltime high. However, Funston states that a continued declining cowherd is not sustainable. In order to keep up with beef demands and grow the nations cowherd, an increased pregnancy percentage must be achieved as well as retention of more heifers. Heifer retention cannot occur without correct management practices and selection of heifers based on functionality. A long-term study on systems incorporating late gain going into breeding season suggests that the first service conception rate can be increased, resulting in higher conception rates and lower input costs. “Reproduction is the single most important factor in profitable beef production,” he said.

Nebraska Research Using Reds to Improve Returns for Ranchers

Looking at information gained during a synchronization project coupled with a shortened breeding season to 45 days rather than the previous 60-day interval demonstrated similar pregnancy rate, and older, heavier calves returned an additional $35 per head at weaning. It is key to note that it takes the profit from two early-calving cows to cover the loss of one late-calving cow. The actual production differences are large – a cow that calves in the first 21-day calving interval her entire productive life of 8 to 9 years will produce an ADDITIONAL one-and-a-half to two calves in her lifetime compared to one that starts late and stays late. Funston has characterized steer and heifer progeny from the GSL herd by 21-day calving interval and found both are heavier at weaning, and heifers born in the first 21-day period are also more fertile, calve earlier for their first time and wean a heavier first calf. Steer progeny born in the first 21-day interval are heavier at slaughter, have higher quality grade and are more profitable.

Many of the larger Sandhills ranches have gone to latespring calving because of labor and weather issues, and have experienced challenges breeding “high risk” females, such as heifer calves and first-calf heifers. Research at GSL has responded to this challenge, investigating supplementation prior to breeding. In the first year of research, GSL demonstrated when females are supplemented 10 days prior to and through a 45-day breeding season, pregnancy rates can be increased approximately 20 percent. This indicates that intervention during breeding season in high-risk animals is a highly effective tool to achieve higher conception rates. One current management system study is evaluating postbreeding gain and nutritional status and its role in embryonic survival. Many of these projects result in information that show heifer calves should be exposed early in life to create learned behavior based on how the cowherd will be managed later in life. Funston said, “Develop heifers how you would manage them as cows.” One such study looks into the effects of developing heifers on winter range vs. corn stalks. Research with extensive heifer development systems would indicate that there are long-lasting effects on the lifetime productivity of a female.

His belief is that by challenging heifers with a shorter breeding season, lighter breeding weight and resources to continue growing through calving, will result in animals that are more adaptable to the environment in which we expect them to produce as a cow. As well, resulting information would indicate that allowing environment to effectively select replacement animals to retain in the herd should increase longevity, stayability and fertility of the cowherd. Complete carcass data is collected on all steer progeny to understand how management decisions from the production side – even before birth – impact the product produced for the consumer. This crossbred herd takes advantage of both heterosis and breed complementarity.

“The advantage of crossbreeding is certainly evident in the GSL herd,” said Funston. “Spring-born steers from the last two years – nearly 200 head – averaged 91% Choice, 46% premium Choice, with a 834- lb hot carcass weight and 14.2-inch ribeye area at 0.5-inch back fat, all with approximately only 3% yield grade 4s. These steers were the progeny of cows that weighed 1,200 lbs at weaning time who produced an over 1,300-lb. calf-fed – a pretty remarkable feat considering they exist on limited resources and are expected to graze 11 months out of the year with a reproductive rate in the mid 90 percentile on mature spring-calving cows.”

The knowledge gained by the many wide and varying projects done at the UNL can be put into place as management systems industry wide. Not only does the UNL do the work but also they present it to producers for use and implementation in operations across the country. Leading the industry in available information, the UNL offers their website: beef.unl.edu. Many webinars, research papers, home study courses, reports and so much more can be found at this website: beef.unl.edu. UNL focuses on providing research-based information and resources to beef producers to help them provide an economical, safe, quality product to consumers while protecting and preserving Nebraska’s vast natural resources. ■

Aggressively tracking and managing the reproductive capacity of bulls and replacement heifers can bolster a cattle operation's long-term economic health, two experts say.

Tools such as measuring reproductive tract scores and synchronizing heifers' estrus cycles can help producers get the most out of calving season, said David Patterson, a reproduction and beef cow management specialist at the University of Missouri.

Further, proper nutrition for heifers will maximize their productivity, he said. He noted ranchers in the Midwest lost a lot of pregnancies last year because of drought conditions. "A lot of that goes back to the nutritional stress during that period of time," Patterson told about 50 cattle producers during a workshop here Feb. 22. Ranchers should keep in mind that a heifer's target weight at puberty should be about 65 percent of the average weight of mature cows, he said.

"If heifers are slighted nutritionally, it's going to have an impact on their age and weight of puberty," he said. "If you're managing a later-maturing breed and you compromise their nutritional development ... you've unknowingly set those heifers up for reproductive failure."

Generally, heifers that calve earlier produce more offspring during their lifetimes, he said. Patterson strongly discouraged using growth-promoting implants on replacement heifers, but said synchronizing the heifers with controlled intravaginal drug release devices helps with reproduction management.

"More heifers will become pregnant early in the breeding season," he said.

For bulls, a multiyear study of about 150 angus bulls at a commercial ranch found they averaged about 20 calves in a season, but some sired as many as 54, said Alison Van Eenennaam, a University of California Cooperative Extension biotechnology specialist based in Davis. When measuring total dollars per sire per calf crop, the researchers found one bull could bring $45,000 back to the ranch if you sold all of his progeny as feeders, Van Eenennaam said. "Income is very directly related to the number of calves a bull produces," she said.

In some cases, a rancher may find it's more cost effective to artificially inseminate their heifers than to have them naturally serviced, she said. A Siskiyou County study found that calves sired through artificial insemination arrived a little earlier in the season and had a higher weaning weight, she said. Patterson and Van Eenennaam were taking part in one of several cattle health seminars being put on throughout the state by the UC Cooperative Extension.

Patterson told producers that while much of the beef cattle industry is "steeped in tradition," it's important for ranchers to embrace new methods. He said competitors such as Brazil are doing so. "The fact is we've got a lot of technology that's not difficult to use that can make a big impact," he said.

Vaccination key to preventing bovine respiratory disease

Extension Service veterinarians are urging cattle producers to include prevention in their branding and turnout calf vaccination programs. Drought conditions prevail, so short supplies of grass and water are of major concern to producers. Sick calves only make the situation worse.

“Dust pneumonia really doesn’t exist,” says North Dakota State University Extension Service veterinarian Charlie Stoltenow. “Dust does not cause pneumonia, but it does add to the total stress suffered by an animal during drought conditions. If a calf died due to ‘dust pneumonia,’ it actually died from bovine respiratory disease, or BRD complex.”

tors that may play a role are infections with viruses such as infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and bovine virus diarrhea (BVD); stressful events, such as longdistance movements or weather events; mineral deficiencies; and dusty conditions, all of which affect the calf’s ability to fight off BRD.

“Producers need to start thinking now about vaccinating calves for respiratory pathogens before they are turned out onto pasture because having to treat calves out on pasture is not an ideal situation.”

“If we are treating BRD out on pasture, we are too late in the game for economical intervention,” says Stoltenow. “Every time we have to treat an animal for a respiratory condition, we are lowering the performance and value of that animal. Prevention is the key to profitability.”

Each year BRD complex costs U.S. producers about $500 million. Most cases of BRD occur during the fall months, when calves come off range and pasture, and are weaned and put into feedlots. However, during years of intense stress early in a calf’s life, pneumonia can occur when it is on pasture.

While postweaning BRD has been well defined through the years, its occurrence in calves on summer pasture is not as well understood. Possible fac-

Stoltenow and Daly recommend producers work with their veterinarian to plan a calf health program for this year’s pasture season. This may include vaccines that protect against viruses such as IBR, BRSV and BVD or, in some cases, against bacterial pathogens such as Mannheimia or Pasteurella.
