Restocking Red...
The National Western Stock Show “NWSS” in Denver, Colo., is a great resource for cattlemen. With an outstanding trade show, breed shows, pen shows, auctions and nightly rodeos, the NWSS is a great destination for folks whose vocation includes cattle and horses, or Americans who enjoy farming or ranching lifestyles. No NWSS schedules are any busier than that of Red Angus enthusiasts as a total of 17 events are packed in the five days beginning with Thursday’s exhibitor meeting and ending Monday night as the National Grand Champion Red Angus bull is slapped. This year’s NWSS included the distinction of being the 20th birthday of Red Angus’ Brain Trust. Brain Trust is just what the name implies – a three-hour “brainstorming” session amongst Red Angus stakeholders, which annually endeavors to follow the slogan, “Shared Ideas for a Shared Future.” In 2012, Brain Trust worked to identify those RAAA database features required to make seedstock producers’ businesses more efficient and sustainable. This 20th Anniversary Brain Trust, entitled, “Restocking Red,” focused on the strategies needed for Red Angus to gain critical mass through rebuilding the nation’s cowherd.
RAAA Director of Added Value Programs Myron Edelman opened this year’s meeting by challenging attendees’ understanding of national cowherd trends. Electronic audience responders allowed for instantaneous polling of the attendees, and Myron measured their comparative assumptions against NCBA and Cattle FAX data. Myron did a great job of explaining the overall efficiency of U.S. beef production as compared to global competition and the geographic distribution and decline of our nation’s cowherd. Kevin Miller, RAAA Area 3 board member, cattle feeder and rancher affected by the severe drought that impacted the Great Plains in 2012, moderated a discussion of

drought survival tactics. Colorado ranchers, Steve Wooten and Joe Frasier – both adversely impacted by the 2012 drought – shared their experiences and management strategies used to maintain a cowherd through severe drought conditions.
Commercial Marketing Director Clint Berry took the lead as attendees broke into teams in an effort to design the ideal replacement female. Though significant geographic diversity existed among attendees, cowherd-building traits such as low maintenance, Stayability and Heifer Pregnancy coupled with the breeds reputation for docility and more adaptable red hides continually surfaced as opportunities for breed growth. Bob Morton, Region A board member and Marketing Committee chairman, moderated the Ranch-Ready Replacements discussion. Here Red Angus seedstock producers, Scott Ford, from Nebraska, along with Frank Wedel and Joe Mushrush from Kansas, discussed how they work with their Red Angus bull customers to help market Red Angus replacement females. Lively discussion explored what traits were important to the producers buying those females as well as the maintenance of the relationship between seedstock producer and the commercial customer producing the females.
Greg Comstock CEO of Red Angus Association of America spoke to the history of the Brain Trust meeting, its relationship to RAAA’s Strategic Plan, and how this year’s topic was especially important to achieving one of the goals of that plan – increasing the critical mass of Red Angus.

Marketing Update Traceability for Livestock Moving Interstate
The USDA published its final rule titled "Traceability for Livestock Moving Interstate" in the Federal Registrar on Wednesday, January 9, 2013. The requirements take effect 60 days following publication, meaning cattle producers must comply by March 11, 2013.
The rule’s traceability requirements focus primarily on breeding cattle. Most beef cattle under 18 months of age, for example, are exempt, meaning calves and feeder cattle, which make up the bulk of cattle entering commerce, will not need official identification, at least for now. The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has indicated all along that it will consider adding traceability requirements for additional classes of cattle once the program is established, tested and fine-tuned on smaller numbers. In its December news release announcing the ADT rule, the agency says specific traceability requirements for calves and feeder cattle “will be addressed in separate rulemaking, allowing APHIS to work closely with industry to ensure the effective implementation of the identification requirements.” Among younger cattle, the new rule will require official identification for cattle less than 18 months of age being transported across state lines to shows, exhibitions, rodeos or recreational events.
The rule also clarifies that all livestock moved interstate directly to a custom slaughter facility are exempt from the regulations.
What does this mean for the Feeder Calf Certification Program (Certified Red Angus and Allied Access)? Currently, this ruling carries no change for either the Certified Red Angus or Allied Access tags. RAAA is being proactive by working with our tag supplier to become 840 compliant before the feeder cattle rule takes effect.
However, producers utilizing the ProCow tag will be affected by the current ruling. Those producers who order ProCow tags after February 1, 2013 will have 840 compliant ProCow tags sent to them. Producers that have purchased ProCow tags prior to February 1, 2013 will need to check federal regulations of other identification practices to see if they are compliant. ■

Since APHIS issued its proposed rule in August 2011 they received thousands of comments from industry stakeholders, and incorporated several modifications to the final rule based on those comments. A key change is the agency will accept the use of brands, tattoos and brand registration as official identification when accepted by the shipping and receiving states or tribes.

No Progeny Spring 2012 Postcards
No Progeny Postcards were sent out during the second week of March to those members who have Spring calving cows in their Herd Inventory that did not report progeny for the 2012 Spring calving season. The reporting process for each cow on inventory is the cornerstone of Total Herd Reporting (THR). Calving record or a reason code describing why a cow did not wean a calf is required for each cow on inventory to be compliant and remain on active inventory. The most important benefit of THR is a more accurate database of Red Angus genetics built from the records that producers submit on their cowherds. That equates directly to more accurate EPDs – the original goal of the conceptual founders of THR.
No progeny reports are due April 15, 2013. If the information is not received in the National Office by the deadline, each cow without a report is subject to inactivation. Progeny or reason codes can be reported via Member DataREDS… Steps for Member Data-REDS -1) log in 2) click RRTS Registration/Performance Updates 3) No Progeny Report for 2012. A printed No Progeny report will be mailed upon member request. Please request reports as soon as possible. Please DO NOT use the No Progeny Report for 2013 born calves because the record for 2013 does not cover the lack of THR compliance for 2012.
Why Total Herd Reporting (THR) is Important
Today, THR has become a pillar of the Red Angus breed and has set the bar for other breed associations to report ALL progeny records into their databases – not just the calves that breeders think are good enough to register.
Red Angus continues to be the only breed association where THR is not an option for its members. They are required to participate and report records on their whole herd. Rebecca completed the course for an extra credit assignment in college while I have completed the course more recently. The MBAAA allows us

to reach other MBA graduates and see how they are telling beef’s story.
Rebecca and I both agree that we may have known the science behind beef production but the information gained in the MBA program helped us learn how to effectively communicate to the consumer about our product. Rebecca said, “The thing that hit home for me is that we in agriculture need to realize how important it is to get "our" story out and the program helped with learning how to do that.” I agree with Rebecca completely, we can all talk about our beef story but it is more important to learn “how” to tell it. Remember to not get offensive but rather use education and facts to deliver your story. All beef producers and industry allies with a genuine interest in promoting the beef industry are invited to enroll in the MBA program. Highlights of Past Junior Red Angus Association Members
Craig Bieber
Craig Bieber has been around Red Angus most of his life. In 1966, the year Craig was born, Ron and Lois Bieber decided to use Red Angus on their Red Angus-Hereford and Shorthorn-Hereford cross cows. In 1968, Ron and Lois started the herd with a purchase of 14 registered Red Angus which was the foundation of the herd he manages today.
Craig showed Red Angus cattle throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. He served as Vice President of the Red Angus Junior Association in the mid 1980s. In 1993 he was elected to the board of the Red Angus Association of America and served as an Area director until 1998 when he ran for President of the RAAA in Sheridan, WY and was elected and served till 2000. Through the years, many mentors influenced and guided him. The most influential are his parents and co-founders of Bieber Red Angus, Ron and Lois Bieber. John Robbins was the first person to ask Craig to serve on a RAAA committee. George Chiga, Jim Shirm, Alan Havick, Rex and Joanne James, Jack and Gini Chase, Gene Rouse and Roy Wallace are some of the great Red Angus
breeders/enthusiasts who Craig considers friends and mentors. There were several people who led the RAAA to a very promising future and showed Craig the benefits of strong leadership in the breed, including Jim Leachman, Darrel and Mary Lou Schuler, Melvin Leland, Bob Hough and many others. Craig grew up with many who were in the junior program and still in the breed today, such as Lee Leachman, Kyle Gilchrist, and Seth Leachman. The Junior RAA has changed a lot from the days Craig was associated with the junior programs. Junior programs in those days consisted of judging contests, shows and pizza parties. Today’s juniors are afforded much more with educational opportunities, internships and leadership development. Craig’s love of the Red Angus breed is evident by his constant desire to improve and enrich the genetic base at Bieber Red Angus Ranch. The herd numbers 800 cows today and has grown with the acquisition of great cattle from several herds including the Oates Land and Cattle dispersal, the purchase of the entire Basin Red Angus herd, and the pur-
chase and registration to 1B status of the Bruce and Lynette Durheim herd. The Biebers have two sales every year in March and November/ December and marketed over 350 bulls and 700 females in 2012. He considers his personal alliance with Bieber Red Angus customers his number one priority and constantly strives to explore new marketing avenues, alliances and genetic opportunities so that Bieber customers will have access to some of the most progressive and lucrative markets. Craig currently serves as a director on South Dakota Beef Industry Council and the Beef Improvement Federation. He is also on the RAAA Breed Improvement Committee. Craig is grateful to be able to share his opportunity to be a part of the Red Angus breed with his wife Peggy of 18 years. Craig and Peggy have two grown children Eric (Megan) and Kristin. ■

Over Six Decades of Red Angus Dedication

Friends, it all started in the 1930’s, when Robert Roebling, family builders of Niagara Falls Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge, purchased half the Isle of Hope, commonly called Skidaway Island near Savannah, GA, to develop the Modena Plantation Angus Herd. Mr. Roebling seemed to prefer living on his ship the “Black Douglas”. By the spring of 1936, he tied his ship to what is now the North Pier as his home. History doesn’t recall this, but his main reason for moving there was the abduction of his next-door neighbor Charles Lindberg’s child in 1932. Mr. Roebling’s overriding concern was for his children. It’s noteworthy, all sale cattle had to be ferried back to the Georgia Mainland from the now historic sale facility. George W. Gibson graduated from the University of Georgia in 1939 with a degree in Animal Husbandry while simultaneously teaching in the animal science department at UGA. George hitchhiked a bull he purchased from the UGA herd 350 miles to his hometown near Savannah. Mr. Roebling read about George’s endeavor in the Atlanta paper. George was brought on board in 1939 as manager at Modena Plantation, in part due to his tenacity at moving bulls and a top referral from Dr. Milton P. Jarnigan, head of animal science at UGA (1907-1948). Later, with the impending war, George Gibson enlisted in the Army, serving as an Army Drill Sergeant all throughout World War II. Upon returning home, George produced one of our first Red Angus Cows: “Lady Jean 3” was born June 1, 1949. She was destined to become RAAA Registry # 871A, one of the breed foundation cows. Today, as then, we continue to select for “Optimal Calving Ease”, great feed conversion and great performance.
Clearly, we are not suggesting we are one of the esteemed Founders of the Red Angus Breed. We did develop one of the foundation herds of the Red Angus Breed. Modena purchased a brother of the 1936 International Grand Champion (red factor) Angus bull Epponian 8th of Rosemere from Yakima, Washington. One of our remaining 1952 pedigrees goes back to Epponian 8th twice.
Today’s Focused Genetics
Today our overriding goal is pushing the envelope on birth to yearling weight gain while maintaining calving ease. We are more comfortable arriving at optimal calving ease from not only the top, but also the bottom of the pedigree. This leads to greater predictability. Gibson cattle never went through the "Small Cow" phase or the "Big Cow" craze. In 2012, our average cow weight was 1085 with calf at side (1200 lbs. in good flesh). Our cow weight has remained a constant, for the most part, since the beginning of the breed. We are one of few producers selecting this long for this type of animal, unaffected by fads.
We select for gain at an unbridled pace. This may be the only extreme here. Just as quickly, we prefer a cow to stop growing at a moderate weight and focus on producing a better calf and breeding back sooner. We believe this vision of a perfect animal is genetically best for more profit, more convenience, less financial input and less overall effort. As George would tell you, "The cows must work for you, and not the other way around."

National Red Angus Show Results Red Angus exhibitors and stakeholders alike spent Jan. 10 – 14 in Denver, Colo., at the National Red Angus Show. With a final count of 200 head in the Open Show, 71 in the Junior Show and 27 head in the Pen Show, the Red Angus presence in Denver was impressive.

The current CattleFax numbers indicate approximately 30 million beef cows on inventory in the U.S. today, down 967,000 head from the previous year, and down 3 million head from 2006. Drought in the southern and western states has played a large role in this reduction, but the world demand for beef has remained steady. The total head of beef cattle inspected for slaughter has decreased, but U.S. producers are still producing the same number of pounds of beef because of increased carcass weights.

While a wet, rainy weather pattern would be the most beneficial to beef cattle producers, Mother Nature is still in control and not tipping her hand to next summer’s precipitation forecast.
According to Joe Frasier of Limon, Colo., who sat on the producer panel at Brain Trust, cattlemen can’t rely on the weather. “There’s so much that we can’t control, so we need to focus on what we can manage,” he said. He implements a management plan that includes rotational grazing, forage knowledge and continual monitoring of forage conditions and his cattle’s body condition scores.
Panelist Steve Wooten of Kim, Colo., has also discovered that their strict culling criteria was really a survival of the fittest and resulted in their cowherd exhibiting improved foraging and survivability. “As we culled cows for their lack of productivity, we found our incoming replacement heifers were better foragers,” said Wooten. “It’s not uncommon to find our cows utilizing the grasses back in the canyons and up on the benches.” In the midst of adversity lies opportunity Brain Trust attendees brainstormed how to help the nation restock the cowherd inventory with Red Angusinfluenced females. One of the top criteria was to sell more Red Angus bulls so commercial producers can begin rebuilding their cowherds with females that are profitable, efficient and who remain in the cowherd for many years.
Heifer development – rather than feeding Red Angus influenced heifers – was another major topic. “The Red Angus cow is an optimally diversified female that is maternal but can still produce a profitable steer,” said Wooten. “Why would we ever want to feed a Red Angus heifer?”

“We need to continue to convey the value of the Red Angus influenced females to commercial producers,” said panelist Joe Mushrush of Strong City, Kan. “We are a maternal breed, but maternal traits are the foundation of all revenue-building traits – and that equates to profitability.” ■

Red Angus Young Stockman Program Junior Red Angus members, reproductive tracts, simulated cows, Dr. Temple Grandin, Colorado State University, DNA sampling, EPD understanding and the Red Angus National Pen Show highlighted the 2013 Red Angus Young Stockman Program held during the National Western Red Angus activities. 22 juniors from 9 states kicked off the brand-new Program by participating in the hands-on, beef industry knowledge schedule for Young Stockman on January 12 and 13. The Young Stockman activities began on Saturday morning with a bus trip to Colorado State University. Dr. Jason Ahola, former staff member at the Red Angus Association of America, coordinated the schedule at CSU and his graduate student, Bo Bigler, orchestrated the schedule on campus. Activities at the ARDEC research facility at CSU began with a brisk walking tour of the beef research and feeding facilities. Young Stockman saw Leachman of Colorado bulls being fed on a GrowSafe system; rations for developing heifers and cull cow maintenance; breeding and working facilities designed by Dr. Temple Grandin; and the metabolism/nutrition research facility. Following the facilities tour, Dr. Temple Grandin, world renown livestock behavior and handling specialist, addressed the Young Stockman. She included a powerpoint presentation and frank discussion on cattle behavior and the responsibilities of cattle handlers at all phases in her address. After working with refrigerated tracts, everyone had a chance to practice A.I. on a model “cow”, complete with curtains to block viewing the hands while working and simulated movement of a cow in a chute. Dr. Shawn Archibeque, ruminant nutritionist at CSU, took the juniors “rumen diving” – exploring the rumen of a fistulated steer, examining the contents and taking samples for observation under a microscope. Dr. Achibeque explained rumen contents and symbiotic relationship with the many microbes present. Under magnification and projected on a large screen, the Young Stockman observed the rumen contents fueled either by sugars or by fiber, watched the consumption of smaller microbes by larger microbes and learned about the general function and uniqueness of the ruminant digestive system. A visit to the main CSU campus and bookstore, a tour of the Animal Science building, a presentation by a current CSU Animal Science student and a meeting with Ruben Flores, the CSU College of Agriculture recruiter, rounded out the day in Ft. Collins. A pizza party by the pool concluded the first day’s activities.
Sunday morning dawned quite cold but found the eager Young Stockman group in the Yards – meeting with Larry Gran, Pfizer Animal Health. Mr. Gran discussed the reasons and advantages of DNA testing and general genomics terminology before demonstrating hair sampling and blood sampling. Russ Fehringer, Lakeview Cattle Company, American Falls, Idaho, provided heifers for the hair and blood sampling. Young Stockmen were able to practice hair sampling and preparing sample cards.
Willie Altenburg, Genex representative and Red Angus breeder, explained EPDs to the group. He discussed how Genex selects Red Angus bulls for their program and how to use EPDs in bull selection, along with visual appraisal. Then, Mr. Altenburg gave all Young Stockmen an assignment which they were to complete by attending the Red Angus National Bull Pen Show. Each junior was challenged to find either a bull for use on heifers or a bull for use on cows from those exhibited in the Pen Show – using EPD profiles from the program combined with their observation of each bull during the show. The Young Stockman Program finale immediately followed the Pen Show. Each participant was allowed two minutes on the microphone to address the audience – presentations included a personal introduction, reasons for the bull each selected to complete the assignment and a favorite aspect of the Young Stockman Program. Much thought and humor highlighted the addresses, which were emceed by the RAAA’s own, Clint Berry.

JRA Frisbees were sold for $10 each during the weekend. At the Mile High Sale, everyone who purchased a Frisbee (or a designated thrower) gathered along the walkway of the sale facility to throw their discs! The goal – to get the Frisbee in to a showbox, donated by Mushrush Red Angus, Strong City, Kan., situated in the sale ring. A drawing from all Frisbees making it into the showbox would determine the winner of the showbox. Frisbees soared into the air around the sale facility as the Mile High Sale began! Much laughter and wild aim filled the room. When the white and red Frisbee dust settled, Rob Holowaychuk, OBI, Canada, had the ONLY Frisbee to make it into the showbox, so he was the automatic winner! However, Mr. Holowaychuk donated the showbox back to the JRA for auction. Lively bidding ended with Russ and Shawna Fehringer, Lakeview Cattle Company, American Falls, Idaho, with the winning bid. The Fehringers then donated the showbox to the Young Stockman Program so that one name from the participants could be drawn to receive the showbox. Alyssa Hahn-Pierce, Molt, Mont., was the lucky winner. She was glad to have driven a pick-up to Denver so she could haul her prize back home! Sincere thanks to all who purchased Frisbees, to Mushrush Red Angus for donating the showbox, to Mr. Holowaychuk for donating the showbox back to the juniors, to Lakeview Cattle Company for their generous purchase and thoughtful donation back to the Young Stockman participants! It was exciting and fun and benefitted the JRA! ■

The waning beef cattle supply in the U.S. has an obvious direct impact on the operating techniques of cattle feeders. The very factories that manufacture supply (U.S. base cowherd) to the feed yards decreased in the year 2012 down 690,000 head from the previous year. 2013 has started with an inventory of less than 30 million head of mother cows. As we would expect, that translates to a lower number of cattle placed on feed. The USDA January 2013 cattle on feed report shows an 11.2 million head decrease, which equals 5.6% of the reports just one year ago (source: USDA NASS).
Discussing short cattle supply has an interesting perspective when we consider the country is operating with cattle numbers equal to those in 1952. Not to mention, in 2012 there was a total of more feedlot bunk space than we have ever seen in this country (feedlots of 1000 head capacity and larger), one time capacity of over 14.5
million head according to Cattle-Fax. The result is a scramble by cattle feeders for the available supply of cattle offered for sale as feeders. The scramble continues to compound as yard operators need to fill the available space in their respective operations as a way to distribute fixed costs among as many head of cattle as possible, which in turn widens profit margins and/or controlling loss. We also know that because of the drought situation during the 2012
growing season in a large portion of the Midwest, feed commodities are also in short supply and an economic burden to procure.
Compile all of the cattle and commodity facts, and the conclusion is that feeders are faced with very tight profit margins and loss in cash to cash market comparisons. Extensive risk management and economic planning is not only the norm in the cattle feeding sector, but by most econo-

mist is considered a must for survival in times of extremely volatile and uncertain markets. In fact, only about 26% of market ready cattle during the year 2012 were traded in a cash market which leaves nearly 74% of cattle fed last year with alternative marketing implications affected by risk management (Cattle-Fax industry outlook report). Verification and premium programs offer a positive aspect to accessing export markets and have continued to help drive demand for beef so that market ready cattle have value downstream within the supply chain. Last year the U.S. exported near $6 billion worth of beef according to the Meat Export Federation. We could ask why do cattle feed yards continue on this economically risky quest of feeding near a quarter of the world’s beef? Due to the large amount of capital that it takes feed yards to operate, we could and
should inquire as to what ranches can do at the grass roots level to supply cattle that have the opportunity to be profitable at each stage of the supply chain.
So what is it that drives value? How do feed yards target cattle to procure for their respective yards? The list of sought after attributes is relatively short but concise. Tom Brink, CEO and President of Five Rivers Feeders, identifies those attributes as “healthy cattle that can convert feed, grow and grade. “ Herd health is basically management practices, vaccinations, mineral programs, weaning and handling techniques with perhaps a docility component. Cattle that can convert feed, grow and grade translates to genetic capability. Growth performance is relatively simple to measure and track and group feed conversion is a part of most feed yard closeouts. The basis for revenue is weight. Steer carcass weights in the U.S. increased from 850 lb aver-
age in 2011 to over 870 lb average in 2012. Carcass performance historically has been measured as a means of evaluating cattle for decades. Nearly 70% of the cattle harvested in the U.S. are marketed on a formulated grid system of some kind.

Cattle that meet the specs of specific grids may garner revenue of up to $150 more than average cattle, of course depending on market period, choice/select spread and demand.
Have Red Angus cattle kept pace with the industry specifications that drive revenue? In the last four years, carcass data of Certified Red Angus tagged cattle submitted for Grid Master consideration could be used as a measuring device. Data on more than 12,000 head was turned in by commercial ranches and feed yards across the country in that four year period. Nearly 9,000 head of Red Angus cattle in that period qualified for the Grid Master specifications, averaging more than 93% Choice and Prime, more than 53% Yield Grade 1 or 2 and less than 4 % Yield Grade number 4. Tom Odle, Superior Livestock Video says, “Using the Certified Red Angus tag definitely adds value to cattle; the more labels producers qualify their cattle with,
the more dollars those cattle are worth.”
As we stop to verify the facts, the cattle feeding business appears nothing short of tumultuous. One thing that has been proven over time is that difficulties to cattle feeders do not dampen their spirits nor do obstacles detour our nation’s feed yards from producing over 20% of the world’s beef while feeding a calf crop from a shrinking cowherd that totals only

about 10% of the world’s cows. Genetic advancements, feeding techniques and improved commodities from research have all contributed to the massive strides in production efficiencies this business has made. Profitably feeding cattle is one of U.S agriculture’s most difficult challenges. Yet time and time again, the beef business has risen to the challenge of producing arguably the world’s most desirable protein source. ■

Successful calving seasons depends on forage quality
Feeding poor quality forages to cows in the late gestation or early lactation period can mean devastating results when it comes to conception rates in the following breeding season. That is why John Grimes, beef coordinator for Ohio State University Extension, recommends that producers check the nutrition values in their forage supplies.
“Sometimes we lose sight or simply forget the status of the hay when we made it back in May or June,” Grimes said. “Last year wasn’t a great year for forage production and while there may be decent quality out there we do get concerned this time of year when the cold weather hits and our livestock’s needs change.”
Animals tend to become more stressed when there is dampness and a chill in the air and, in turn, need more quality nutrition, especially with calving season approaching. If producers find they have poor quality forage, they may want to supplement the feed with higher quality corn for those cows, particularly with first-calf heifers. “In nearly every cow-calf operation, harvested forages are the primary diet component of winter rations, but we typically know less about those forages than any other feed

and health products consumed by the herd,” Grimes said. “It’s easy to over-value hay that looks good in the bale while we may have forgotten how mature it was when it was packaged.”
Producers should consider sending forage samples in for nutritional analysis before feeding it to late-gestation or early-lactation females to determine its nutritional quality. If the quality is poor, producers may need to balance the ration with corn or grain byproducts to meet the needs of a mature or growing female under production stress. Within 30 to 60 days of breeding, producers should consider putting the cow on an inclining or improving nutrition program. Grimes knows that the costs of adding feed to the winter ration is a noticeable expense but said you can either pay for it now or pay for it later.
“Obviously we are a bit locked in to the hay supplies that we have on hand and, with the drought out west, what we have now may be all we get, so supplemental grains may already be part of the equation,” Grimes said. “What concerns me is bringing young cattle into the herd and racking up all of the expenses taking them through the process. If you skimp on feed now and drop the ball as we approach the finish line, it can be an expensive decision to make in the long run.”

To ensure more successful, healthy and productive calving, cows need to maintain adequate body condition scores during critical production times, he said.
“Body Condition Scores (BCS) ranging from 5 to 6 are considered ideal during late gestation or early lactation in this scoring system where 1 is thin and 9 is obese,” Grimes said. “Poor nutrition and declining BCS during late gestation or early lactation can have devastating negative impacts on conception rates in the following breeding season.” By Ty Higgins, Ohio Ag Net Managing Through High Cost Feed Ingredient Markets
Drought and the ensuing high feed prices have put many livestock producers in a feed shortage going into winter. With high feed prices expected to continue at least until the 2013 harvest, what can producers do to get the best value for each feed dollar spent? Three simple steps to maximize return on your feed expenditures are: 1. Work with a nutritionist; 2. Investigate alternative feed ingredients; and, 3. Put a plan in place.

Work With A Nutritionist The first step is to work with a nutritionist to refine your feed rations. Some overfeeding may be seen as cheap insurance in a regular year but now it is extremely costly. Discuss your growth and performance expectations with a nutritionist and adjust your rations accordingly. You and your nutritionist should also brainstorm a list of possible alternative feed ingredients that could be fed. Investigate Alternatives Step two is to consider your alternatives. This includes alternative feed ingredients but also alternative delivery, storage and suppliers should be considered. As an example, you may have kept very little inventory of purchased feed ingredients in the past but you may now want to consider how you can store ingredients if you find a good value. Also consider new delivery methods. If you have traditionally fed mainly home-grown forages but now find yourself short of feed, consider how you could replace some of those needs with bulk delivered byproduct feeds. The handling and storage may be more involved but it could be worth the investment to capitalize on a good value bulk feed ingredient.
Management Update
Once you have a list of possible alternatives, continue to watch the market and talk to multiple suppliers. Just because an ingredient is not available this month doesn’t mean it won’t become available next month. Put A Plan In Place Step three is to put a written plan in place. Putting a plan in place now will help you to quickly make decisions and adjust to opportunities when they occur. A written plan should include an estimate of your feed needs, how you’ll cover those needs and an expense budget. Then re-visit your plan at least monthly to check if you are on track. High priced feed ingredients can be a difficult problem. But working with a nutritionist, investigating alternatives and putting a plan in place can help you get the most for your feed dollar. BEEF Proper nutrition for pregnant cows pays dividends far into the future
Most cow-calf operators realize maintaining proper nutritional levels during the last two-thirds of the pregnancy period results in healthier calves. But information presented by NDSU Extension Service livestock specialist Carl Dahlen at the recent Lake Region Extension Roundup in Devils Lake indicates proper nutrition at that time plays dividends during future months as well.

He presented research information from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on two sets of pregnant cows that were fed in the Sand Hills area of that state. The first group was fed a ration that contained 80 percent of the nutritional requirements. The other group was fed the same ration plus supplements that brought the ration up to recommended levels. The following results are an indication of how important it is to supplement a ration if the required nutrients, especially crude protein and TDN, are lacking. The body condition scores at the time of calving for those cows receiving supplementation was a 4.9 versus a 4.2 score for those on the deficient ration.
Jumping ahead to the next calving year, those cows with the supplementation had a 97 percent calving rate, while those with the inadequate diet had a 90 percent calving rate, meaning that feeding a ration that met the nutritional needs of the cow resulted in seven more calves per hundred cows even in the next calving cycle. In addition, there are other areas that are impacted by feeding a deficient ration, Dahlen noted. These include: cow health; birth weight of calf; colostrum quality; calf health; fertility of the cow when it comes to breeding back; and fetal programming effects.

Fetal programming effects - This phenomenon was first noticed in human health situations, when, due to some natural influence, a large segment of the pregnant women in a population were subject to inadequate nutrition during their pregnancy. This lower nutrition during pregnancy impacted certain growth characteristics of those children throughout their lives including things like growth rate and overall health. It had nothing to do with how the children ate, but rather the fetal environment during pregnancy, he said.
The same situation was found in the feeding research in the Nebraska test, Dahlen said, when things like final live weight at slaughter, rate of gain, carcass weight were compared for those animals slaughtered. Significant differences were also noted for developing heifers held over for breeding purposes in areas such as age at first puberty, percent cycling at bull turnout time, percent calving in the first 21 days of the calving season and final pregnancy rate. Looking at some of the specific numbers for those placed in a feedlot and eventually slaughtered: Factors like the age of first puberty are important, Dahlen explained, since the more times a heifer cycles before being bred, the more fertile that heifer likely is and the better chance she will
have of being successfully bred during that first exposure to the bull or an AI breeding. "When we look at all of these things, sometimes it's hard to put a number on them," Dahlen said. "I am, by nature, basically cheap and want to see a return for money spent. If I put out $1,500 in supplement, I want to see more than $1,500 in return. Some of these results we are seeing, like age at first puberty and those calving the first 21 days occur more than a year after that supplement was purchased and fed to the mother cow. "How do you pencil that? It gets to be really difficult. But it's something to think about when we are considering whether or not to supplement our cows that are on a nutrient deficient ration." Dahlen concluded by saying due to short pasture conditions this past summer, many cows are carrying a little less body condition score than they normally do at this time, but there is still time to correct the situation.
"We still have time ahead of calving where we can go in and do some different things with our supplements - with our nutrition program - to get our cows where they need to be for next year," he said. By DALE HILDEBRANT The Prairie Star

Little things add up fast at feedlots
It takes knowledge, infrastructure and ability to feed out cattle, but the best feedlot operators also are willing to change and try new things.
At the recent University of Minnesota Cattle Feeder Days, Tom Peters, a ruminant nutritionist, gave several suggestions to improve the profitability of feedlot facilities. Some of his ideas require little additional cost but can significantly improve the bottom line. “I have seen a 10,000-head feed yard that had an average loss last year of $387 per head. That same year, a 1,200head feed yard made $255 per head space,” Peters said. “The same year, same feed price,” but a huge profit swing because of the environment – “because of doing the right things at the right times.”
Peters, from Oregon, Ill., encouraged operators to look critically at their own feedlots and consider the potential for change. Some of his suggestions: •Don’t buy cheap cattle. “When you have expensive feed stuffs, you want to buy the best quality cattle you can find,” he said. “I’m not saying that is equated with the highest price; you just have to do a little better shopping.” •Develop plans of action for extreme weather. In extreme heat, start watering down the lot and bed pack before it gets hot. Have plenty of waterers available for the cattle. Ahead of winter storms, start feeding a storm ration. Use lots of bedding. Cornstalk bales are cheap, make great bedding and provide fiber in the beef cattle diet. In addition, Peters recommends that between Dec. 1 and March 1, operators provide 60 percent of feed at 6 a.m. and 40 percent at noon. “I want those cattle done eating by 3 p.m.,” he said. “I
want those cattle backed off, done with their drinking, laid down and in bed for the night.”
From March 1 to Dec. 1, Peters feeds 40 percent of the TMR at 6 a.m. and 60 percent in the evening. •Give the cattle the best environment possible. Beef feedlot cattle need to lie down for 12 hours a day. Peters said cattle gain 14 percent feed efficiency when they lie down vs. standing. After feed time is finished, 70 percent of the cattle should be lying down. “If they are not, you are feeding at the wrong time, or they don’t have an environment to lie down,” he said. •Delouse cattle between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. •Watch cattle, listen to cattle. “In all of the feed yards, each month, I spend two hours out in the pens,” Peters said. “I am listening to cattle. I don’t take anybody with me. I’m listening to them grind or not. I’m counting cud chewing, and the lay-down time, evaluating feces, and just giving general scores to the whole feed yard.” In addition, he observes cattle eating at the bunk. Peters said the height on the inside rail should be 13.5 inches for starting calves and 19.5 inches for the finishing livestock. Also, is the bunk too big so the smaller calves are pushing feed to where they can’t reach it? Are larger cattle separating out and pushing feed out of the bunk because of incorrect mixing? •Keep rodents out of the feed bunk and patch any holes. Consider adding a bumper to the outside of the bunk so equipment doesn’t run into the bunks. Repurposing tires for use as bumpers can work well. •Ship cattle when they are ready to be shipped – don’t hold them back for a few weeks with hopes of getting a better price. “You have to let the cattle tell you when it’s time to sell,” Peters said. “They have to go.” By Andrea Johnson, Lee Agri-Media

The high selling Red Angus heifer was Lot 1 a Mulberry 26P daughter out of SRN Copper Cap 5053 selling to the Here After Cattle Co., of Pincher Creek, AB, Can., and Douds, Iowa for $9,500. Another Red Angus heifer Lot 7 was a LazyJ High Voltage 003-3002 daughter selling to Ed and Jeanne Olson, Argusville, N.D., for $6,750. Gary Jacobson, Jacobson Red Angus from Hitterdal, Minn., took home Lots 48 and 49 which were two full ET Red Angus sisters for $6,000 and $6,500. The high selling Sim-Red Angus heifer was purchased by Craig Kurtz, Dunlap, IL for $4,750. Lot 70 was nine head of commercial Red Angus heifers that sold to Mike Raile, Eureka, S.D., for $1,200/hd. Volume heifer buyers for the day were the Brent Thompson Family, Elkton, S.D., going home with 9 head and Kaup Red Angus, Hoven, S.D., purchasing 17 head.
The high selling Red Angus bull for the day was Lot 72 a HXC Conquest 4405P son selling for $9,000 to Rodney Rohde, Emerson, Neb. They also went home with a full ET brother selling as Lot 71 for $8,500. Todd Weig, Leola, S.D., took home Red Angus Lot 74 a Ubar High Capacity 224 son for $7,750.
High selling Sim-Red Angus bulls were two full ET brothers (Lots 81 & 82) sired by NLC Upgrade and out of the Red Angus donor dam NER Copperqueen 2657 to Rodney Rohde, Emerson, Neb., for $6,250 and $6,000. High selling Angus bull was Lot 124 a D Firestone T729 son consigned by Justin & Nicole Dikoff and selling to Bruce and Willard Hoffman, Rockham, S.D., for $5,750. The Red Balancer bull consigned by Twisted Wire Gelbvieh sold to Joe Schmidt, Roscoe, S.D., for $5,000. Volume bull buyers for the day were Kaup Red Angus, Hoven, S.D., with 7 head, Rodney Rohde, Emerson, Neb., with 4 head and Mike Raile, Eureka, S.D., with 4 head. Cattle sold into seven states and Canada with most of the customers being repeat buyers from N.D. and S.D. Guest consignors at the event were Broadaxe Ranch-Rodney and Erin Yost, Gann Valley, S.D., Twisted Wire Gelbvieh-Dr Cassie and Todd Holtz, Roscoe, S.D., and Justin and Nicole Dikoff, Onaka, S.D.

The second high selling open heifer was Spur Mattie 2247Z (Lot 38) also from Silver Spur Ranch and also selling to Bachman Cattle Farms. At $8,500 the third high selling open heifer was Lot 37 OWNG Bala 1210 consigned by Owings Cattle Co of Powell Butte, Ore., and selling to Headwaters Ranch, Sante Fe, N.M.

The top selling bull was consigned by Rich Red Angus, Vinton, Iowa and sold to Marty Ternus, Vinton, Iowa. He was a choice of Lot 47A, RRA Logistics 227, or 47B, RRA Red Bull, the choice of these bulls sold for $10,000. Second high selling bull was Lot 46B, OWNG Hamley 1109 at $6,000. He was consigned by Owings Cattle Co., Powell Butte, Ore., and sell- ing to Billy Estrada, Durango, Mexico.
The flush lots were in strong demand with Lot 23 topping the field at $12,000. This was a flush on DFRA Tarmily N512 from DAMAR Farms, Strum, Wis., selling to Rich Red Angus, Vinton, Iowa. At $9,500 Lot 29 was the second high selling flush lot. She was TJS Mattie X0143 from Kylie Leachman, Blanco, Texas selling to Cargo Stock Farms, Arnegard, N.D. Lot 25 was the third high selling flush lot at $9,000. This was a flush from the Red T-S Olivia 706P cow consigned by Brylor Ranch, Pincher Creek, Alberta and sold to Griffin Red Angus, New Hampton, Iowa.
Unique semen lots were also in great demand with Lot 59, Red Wrights 832S Iron Hide 4Z topping the field at $350 per straw for 80 straws to total $28,000. This lot was consigned by Blair’s Ag, Lanigan, Sask., and sold to J6 Farms, Gibbon, Neb., and Wildcat Creek Ranch, Newton, Kan. Second high selling semen lot at $16,250 was Lot 56, Bieber Rollin Deep Y118 consigned by Silver Spur Ranch, Encampment, Wyo., and Bieber Red Angus, Leola, S.D. This semen sold for $325 per straw for 50 straws to Jeffries Land & Cattle, Checotah, Okla. Rounding out the top 3 semen sellers was Lot 55 A- J Red SSS Arson 85U selling for $225 for 50 straws and $200 for 50 straws to total $21,250. This lot was consigned by Brylor Ranch, Pincher Creek, AB, and sold to Victor Gonzales, Verdw Chula Vista, Calif., and Griffin Red Angus, New Hampton, Iowa.
The high selling embryo was Lot 19 selling for $1,400 per embryo ($4,200). This Lot was 3 embryos from the cow, A-1 Siera Indeed 549X X Red SSS Soldier 365W consigned by A-1 Land & Cattle, Muenster, Texas and selling to Fischer Red Angus, Harlowton, Mont. Lot 17 was the second high selling embryo lot and was the mating of Red Fine Line Mulberry 26P and Red Brylor Cherok 22L consigned by Griffin Red Angus, New Hampton, Iowa and selling to Campbell Creek Ranch, Dunnegan, Mo., for $1,300 per embryo ($3,900). Cattle sold into 17 states, Canada and Mexico. ■
