Why has the Red Angus breed continued to grow and gain popularity amongst producers who make their living in the beef industry? Perhaps the answer can be traced to the seven innovative breeders who chose Red Angus in 1954 as the basis of the industry’s first performance registry. These founding members of RAAA deviated from many of the purebred norms of the day vowing instead …” to place its [the Association’s] trust in objective tests, consisting for the most part of comparisons within herds of factors of known economic importance and known heritability.” 58 years later, this founders’ vision is just as relevant and is recollected to start every RAAA Board meeting.
But why should a commercial cow/calf producer invest in Red Angus genetics? Because since its inception, the Red Angus Association has been investing in the success of the commercial beef industry. In the early 1960’s, the RAAA broke with British breed tradition and promoted crossbreeding – nearly a decade before the industry adopted crossbreeding as a tool to enhance commercial cow/calf profitability. This grew into the development of a Red Angus “F-1” program in the 70’s. In 1999, RAAA spearheaded a successful jointbreed campaign promoting the advantages of heterosis and breed complementarity. A decade later RAAA combined databases with Canadian Angus Association and American Simmental Association to deliver the first and world’s largest multi-breed genetic evaluation. The breed has avoided fads and has stayed focused adding pounds for our commercial customers’ calf crops. From the beginning Red Angus required submission of weaning weight as a requirement for registration. Later, RAAA

would become the first breed to implement Total Herd Reporting (THR), which required breeders to submit progeny data for each female in the herd. A fact that has resulted in highly reliable EPDs as well as Red Angus’ unique predictions for economically relevant traits such as Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability. More recently, genomic enhanced EPD’s provide the opportunity to increase EPD accuracy in young animals. The Red Angus Association of America has the most extensive Commercial Marketing Programs in the seedstock industry. The Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) is the beef industry’s first process verified program and combines with the Feeder FAX, Red Angus sponsored video auctions such as Superior Livestock Auction or Regional Feeder Calf Sales to help bull customers achieve full value for their investment in superior Red Angus genetics.
Added Value Marketing of Red Angus fed cattle provides ranchers with retained ownership options. In addition to Age and Source Verification (ASV) premiums, the Association’s Grid Master program annually recognizes the carcass excellence of thousands of Red Angus calves harvested at all four major packers.
Bottom line – Using Red Angus genetics in concert with the Association’s added value programs can help keep your operation in the black. Association Commentary Making the DNA Decision…
In December 2012, the first genomically enhanced EPDs on Red Angus animals were published by the RAAA. This milestone was the culmination of a RAAA member’s private investment in Pfizer’s HD50K Red Angus panel. Over the coming weeks many more breeders will make a number of decisions about their investment in genomic EPDs. The outcome of those decision(s) will no doubt be their reconciliation of some if not all of the following questions. Why should I consider investing in genomic data? The best reason is to gain a more accurate understanding of an animal’s true genetic merit.
EPDs are the tool the beef industry uses to predict true genetic merit. Incorporation of genomic data into EPD calculations will increase EPD accuracy, and can be especially helpful to gain accuracy in traits where progeny data is not collected until later in animals’ lives.
How significant is the increase in EPD accuracy? That depends… 1) On the beginning accuracy of the animal upon which genomic data is being collected. Highly proven bulls (.70 or .80 EPD accuracy) will see little to no gain in accuracy from a 50K test. Yearling bulls on the other hand, which typically have accuracies in the .15 - .25 range may see their accuracy increase to the vicinity of .30 -.45. Or, similar to that of a 3- to 4-year-old herd sire with a calf crop of progeny data under their belt. 2) It also depends on the trait. A 50K panel can produce genomic data for a dozen or more traits, and the panel’s efficacy varies by trait. The gains in accuracy will be higher for those traits where the genomic data derived from the 50K panel has a higher correlation to the EPD for that trait. I participated in the RAAA “50K Project,” but my animals’ EPDs have yet to be enhanced by the genomic data?
It is important to understand that those animals included in RAAA 50K Project’s “Discovery Population” were part of a Research and Development initiative, the
ultimate goal of which is to develop a Red Angus-specific 50K panel for the collective benefit of all Red Angus stakeholders. This project was funded by the RAAA and the panel developed cooperatively by GeneSeek and Iowa State University.
Animals included in the 50K Project will have their EPDs enhanced by genomic data, but only when the project is completed and resultant molecular breeding values (MBV) are validated by a third party. Such validation was previously performed on the Pfizer test and is currently being performed on the GeneSeek test. Will the Geneseek product be exactly the same as the same as the Pfizer product? No. At least initially the two panels will not contribute information to identical suites of EPDs. Pfizer’s current 50K panel does not include genomic data on Stayability, Heifer Pregnancy or Maintenance Energy. The GeneSeek panel is projected to include genomic data on all RAAA EPDs. Furthermore, there may be differences in the amount of accuracy each contributes to EPDs that they do have in common.
How will breeders choose between the two panels? At present, I would expect that breeders would choose the panel that contributes the most accuracy in the traits of greatest interest to that particular breeder. Long term, I believe competition will drive technological advancement, which will drive price and customer service.
When will the RAAA/Geneseek product be available? … as soon as it passes secondary validation. While preliminary information indicates the GeneSeek test is very effective in predicting genetic merit, we must confirm this through the more intensive validation process. The land-grant university performing this validation is projecting (not promising) mid-February 2013. Why were genomic-enhanced EPDs through use of the Pfizer panel published first?
The PF50K panel is a co-product of Pfizer’s Global Angus panel that was developed privately by Pfizer using 50K genotypes they had collected on Black and Red Angus

from around the world. Pfizer had sought to release PF50K in the fall of 2011, a year after their release of a similar panel for American Angus members. However, to ensure the validity of new data being entered in RAAA’s database and which would impact the breed’s genetic evaluation, RAAA required that PF50K undergo secondary validation by a third party. This was completed by Colorado State University (CSU), shortly before the September 17, 2012, announcement. If the Pfizer product passed secondary validation in midSeptember, why didn’t RAAA publish genomic-enhanced EPDs until December?
Although PF50K had passed secondary validation in mid September, it was not until the first week of December, after RAAA staff – working with Pfizer and our genetic evaluation service providers – had completed programming to allow the MBVs produced by PF50K to be incorporated into RAAA’s interim EPD calculations. How can Red Angus stakeholders know if an animal’s EPDs have been genomically enhanced?
Animals whose EPDs have been enhanced by a DNA panel will be so designated on RAAA’s animal search page. Image 1 (page 10) shows the placement of the genomic data designation for such an animal. Image 2 (page 10) shows the detail: PF50K indicates an animal whose EPDs have been enhanced through use of the Pfizer 50K panel. Animals whose EPDs were enhanced by the RAAA/GeneSeek product will carry an analogous identification. Are genomically enhanced EPDs better than EPDs whose accuracy was achieved from performance and/progeny data?
Remember, EPD accuracy is no better than its numeric value – regardless of the data source. For example: A .35 MARB EPD accuracy achieved through progeny’s carcass or ultrasound data is identical to a .35 MARB EPD accuracy achieved through a 50K panel. The main advantage of 50K panels is that they allow us to achieve accuracy at an earlier age in the animal’s life. This is especially beneficial for traits where collection of phenotypes is difficult or expensive.

What is the typical turn-around time for genomic-enhanced EPDs? Currently, we anticipate three weeks test time in the lab. Add to that shipping and handling on the front-end, and posting of results on the back-end. What data will I see with 50K results? That will differ depending upon which panel is run.

50K panel will see their animals’ EPDs enhanced accordingly – along with the RAAA calculated percentile ranks of their new EPDs. They will also receive a report that shows trait by trait how the 50K panel enhanced their EPDs.
Stakeholders who use the Pfizer 50K panel will of course see analogous increases in accuracy along with the RAAA-published EPDs and percentile ranks. Likewise they will receive the RAAA report that explains each trait’s increase in accuracy (see Image 3). In addition, Pfizer provides a report showing how their animals’ molecular breeding value compared to the average of other Red Angus animals’ with Pfizer 50K results. How will I be paid for the extra cost of running 50K panels? 50K testing is an investment in informed decision-making – both for you and your

customers. Think of the cost and time involved in developing replacement females – selection decisions could be made more accurate through use of 50K. Even if your customers don’t see the EPD accuracy in the sale catalog, you might sleep better at night knowing they are appraising bulls with higher accuracy EPDs, and will make more informed purchasing decisions.
How and when to invest in 50K testing, as well as which product to utilize are decisions left to the breeder. Timing, budget and use of EPDs as a selection tool will undoubtedly become part of that decision. But one thing is sure – Genomic-Enhanced EPDs will play an increasing role in the RAAA database and EPD calculations. ■

Marketing Update Bull sale season has arrived and ranchers are selecting their new herdsires to deliver profitable traits to their cowherd. To ensure continued success, preparation prior to arriving at the sale is key. Before you can select the bulls to move your cowherd in a desired direction, you need to have a targeted market end point. Simply stated, to move your cowherd forward you first have to know where you’re going. Every road leads you somewhere, careful and informed decisions will help guide your ranch toward profitability. Once you’ve determined the traits that need improving, it’s critical to understand how to correctly place pressure on the EPDs to get your desired results. Red Angus EPDs are designed to describe Economically Relevant Traits (ERTs), built on a two decade foundation of Total Herd Reporting (THR) and features the beef industry’s largest, most comprehensive multi-breed genetic evaluation; all presented on the industry’s first common
base format. No other breed offers its customers such highly proven genetic selection tools that reduce risk at buying time and help to ensure successful decisions that move their cowherd towards greater profitability.
As bull sale catalogs begin arriving in your mailbox, you will undoubtedly notice changes in the EPD presentation. These changes have only made your selection tools more precise and accurate. To help bull customers with this transition, Red Angus breeders have been encouraged to include breed percentile rankings under each EPD. The breed percentages make it much easy to understand what each EPD number represents by allowing you to select bulls (in the top
10%, 25%, 50%, etc.) for a given trait without the need of constantly remembering each specific EPD number. If you have questions, please speak with your seedstock supplier or visit the Genetics page at RedAngus.org.
So this year, prior to arriving on sale day, take time to evaluate your current cowherd, understand your market end point(s) and what your herd’s strengths and weaknesses are. Then take time to understand how Red Angus EPDs help you select bulls that deliver results in your cowherd. A little planning today will pay huge dividends in the coming years.

Wow, 2012 went quickly! 2012 was the driest summer we can remember, and we know that is typical of a large part of the country. Due to dry weather we chose to wean the calves three weeks early, although short and dry, the grass did seem to have a lot of strength, and the calves weighed off with good weights with the mother cows still having great body scores. The 2012 calving season again brought us a high percentage of bull calves, so we will have more bulls to offer, but the quality will be as good as ever A very even set of bulls, from top to bottom are gaining nicely, and should hit targeted gains without becoming fat. All sale animals are coming from one of the few certified Brucellosis free Red Angus herds in Montana. Sale cattle are BVD-PI Free. After the sale:
• Via the web site Data Searches & Tools – Animal Search • Registration Certificate (if available) • Contacting the National Office
• Be sure to transfer animals to the new owners. • The seller has 60 days from the date of sale to submit the transfers with out late fee to the National Office. If received in the National Office after 60 days, fees will apply. • All transfers are processed in date order received. • A Rush is available upon request at $25.00 per head. • All applicable fees are the responsibility of the seller. • If needed for a show, allow enough time for processing – issue date of the registration certificate CANNOT be changed.

Options to transfer animals:
In order to simplify the process, the RAAA has some easy steps to transfer the animals from your herd to the new owner. The process starts prior to the animals being sold. Different ways to verify information:
• Verify the animal’s registration status. Only an animal listed as Registered (R) or Incomplete (I) is eligible for transfer, registration status is listed top row, right of the animal search page at RedAngus.org • Be sure the animal is tattooed correctly • Check that the animal’s ID is the same as the animal being sold. • Is the animal name spelled correctly? • Has the correct sire and/or dam been listed? • Is the category of the animal correct? For the Sale:
• If ownership, possession, semen rights will be retained by the current owner, make certain it is clear what that entails. • RAAA suggested Sale Terms and Condition are available if needed and available on-line.
1) Certificate of Transfer. • On the back of the Certificate of Registration is: the Certificate of Transfer, the seller authorization, a place for the buyer information and the date of sale. If a female is sold bred, the breeding information must be added. If a calf is sold at side, and has not been registered, it may be submitted for registration as well. (Calves at side are eligible for registration provided the seller has met all the requirements for registration in the RAAA Rules and Regulations.) Co-Owned Animals:
• Please complete the Co-owned section on the back of the Certificate of Registration for each owner who is retaining a percentage of the animal and the percent retained. 2) Online Transfers via Member Data REDS.

• The seller may access their REDS account online, go to Transfers, enter the date of sale, the buyer information, choose an animal (s), save to proof, review proof and if correct, submit to the RAAA. • Data Searches and Tools on the web site enable you to search for Members’ account numbers. Having members’ numbers available when entering the transfers, will expedite the process. If the buyer is not a member, we will create a buyer account for them when the transfers are received. 3) Batch Transfer Form: • The batch transfer form allows the seller to transfer up to 6 animals per page; it has a place for the seller authorization signature, date of sale and buyer information. The back of the form allows for breeding information. • If the animal is co-owned please include a Multiple Owner Form, indicating each owner that is retaining a percentage of the animal and the percent retained. Excel Worksheet: • An Excel template is available to enter your sale data. Please contact angelia@redangus.org for a copy.
• The Excel spreadsheet allows you to submit the data in a format that is required by Member Services. Highlights of Past Junior Red Angus Association Members
Matthew Bruce Deist Giving Credit where Credit is Due
One must give credit where credit is due. Even to this day, being involved in the JRA easily ranks among some of my most worthwhile life experiences. I reminisce on my time spent at JRA Round-Ups and cattle shows and I cannot help but feel a strong and cheerful sense of nostalgia when thinking of them. Where do I start? The JRA Cattle Shows! If you have shown cattle before, you of course, already know of what wonderful things went on there. We worked and we worked… setting up stalls, bedding, fans, and tack, washing, blow-drying, clipping, and fitting; exhausting activities to say the least. But the cattle shows were not without their fun. There was always the chance to win. And if you were ever so fortunate enough to do so you were awarded with ribbons, trophies, prize money, and the occasional belt buckle. A belt buckle that you could show off to a certain someone who had your eye. These were memorable and meaningful times for sure. Oh! And let us not forget the JRA Round-Ups! The JRA Round-Up was a week long event that I looked forward to every summer. I knew that no mat-
ter what new state we were going to visit there would be always be an original and rewarding experience and summer friends to enjoy that experience with. Each year I learned something new and motivating about my breed, the cattle industry, friends, myself, and the state we were in. What an opportunity to see the U.S.! With California’s Pacific Ocean and interesting Agriculture, Mountaintop Tepees in Montana, the professional cowboys and ranches of Texas, and Colorado’s beautiful landscape; one could understand why it was hard to leave at the end of just one week. You didn’t want to go home and every year you came back, Round-Up included and meant more and more.
Just the opportunity to visit so many states, successful operations, potential colleges, and friendly people was enough to keep me spending my summers with the JRA. These memories and experiences have made me who I am today and are of the best of the best that will never fade and I will never forget. I could not begin to thank my parents or the JRA enough for their hands in orchestrating what I can only say are some of the best moments in my life to date.
I am now a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University from where I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science and Minor in Chemistry. I was immediately employed fresh out of college to a company named BWI that distributes lawn and garden, turf, pest, and livestock chemicals and supplies. Oh! And college brought with it something else…or rather someone. I am proud to say that I am engaged to be married in October of 2013 to a beautiful, equally headstrong, and caring woman who likes goats…, but please do not be alarmed! For she has become rather fond of Red Angus cattle and thank goodness for that otherwise, things may not have worked out so well. Thanks for Everything JRA. ■

California’s beautiful San Joaquin Valley has always enjoyed a rich and diverse agricultural history. Grapes for wine production, raisins, nuts including walnuts, almonds and pistachios, citrus, garlic, cotton and various vegetables are all harvested from the valley. In addition, cattle and sheep ranching, hay production and dairy farming are all vitally important. The valley runs south of Sacramento, past the city of Bakersfield and rests between the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the east and the California coastal ranges to the west.
Located within the San Joaquin is a group of ranchers carving out a marketing plan built on cooperation and shared common goals. In 2008, three families including Wayne and Pam Weller, Ed and Patty Carroll along with Tom and Jody Daly, formed the Tule Oaks Grazing Association. Each of the families was searching for a way to leverage the value of marketing their calves in volume, but individually they lacked sufficient numbers. Working with John Rogers of Western Video Market (WVM), the Tule Oaks group has enjoyed success utilizing video marketing and the increased exposure WVM offers. By marketing in load lots, offering cattle with superior genetics and carrying added-value options, Tule Oaks has seen the competitive bidding for their calves increase each year.
“Marketing through the livestock markets in our area was a challenge because it was difficult for buyers to purchase a load from one ranch. But the video reaches buyers willing to pay premiums for cattle that they’re confident of the calves’ consistency,” said Paregien.
Some of the parameters Tule Oaks operates under include a shared calving season, targeted to begin around September 1st and lasting only sixty days. This is vital to reduce the variance of weaning weights, ensuring greater consistency of the calves at load out time. In addition, everyone follows the same herd health protocols such as timing of vaccinations, as well as the specific products used. “We work all the calves at branding, when they’re 3-4 months of age in January. They receive an 8-Way Clostridial and BoviShield Gold. Then at weaning they’ll get another round of the same products, while being treated with a pour-on and/or injectable dewormer, followed by their prescribed boosters four weeks later,” stated Carroll.

“We use third party verification on our herd health to build buyer confidence in our calves,” he added. “The most important part is to coordinate among all of us. Because you can only advertise to the weakest link of the group,” said Carroll.

Daly agrees adding, “The strength of the group is only as strong as the weakest link.” Meaning that it takes everyone’s effort to ensure the strictness of added value programs like documented vaccination protocols or Age and Source Verification (ASV).
And Tule Oaks isn’t alone in praising their cooperative effort. In recent years, their cattle were purchased by Bledsoe Cattle Company of Wray, Colo., a repeat buyer. “The Tule Oaks cattle work good for us and fit our program. They are similar and fit well together,” said Grant Bledsoe. “For smaller producers, working together like the Tule Oaks group is a great tool allowing ranchers to compete for top prices available only on load lots. If Tule Oaks didn’t cooperate together, we would not be interested in their calves,” he added. However, Tule Oaks’ cooperation goes much further than shared calving seasons and vaccination protocols. To ensure consistency in their calves, each rancher in Tule Oaks utilizes Red Angus genetics to sire their feeder calves and build their cowherds.
“We like the reliability of Red Angus, the genetics are just more predictable. I have faith in the EPDs because the bulls do what their EPDs say they are going to do,” said Daly. Each rancher in the Tule Oaks group enjoys the benefits of two decades of mandatory Total Herd Reporting (THR), which requires reporting on all animals within a seedstock supplier’s herd, not just the “good ones”.

THR is the foundation for hard to measure, cowherd building traits like Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), Heifer Pregnancy (HPG), Stayability (STAY) and Maintenance Energy (ME). “Using Red Angus, I’m able to buy better bulls and be confident in their predictability, which gives me greater value for my bull buying dollars,” said Carroll. “Using Red Angus gives us calves that are in high demand, with the ability to produce females to build our herd,” said Weller. “Our calves are uniform, the cows are easier to work because they are much calmer and their red hides take the heat better,” he added.
To help capture the value of their Red Angus genetics, Tule Oaks has been using the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP). “The program is easy to use and the buyers know that our tagged calves are sired by Red Angus. The FCCP has helped build repeat buyers for our calves,” said Paregien. The FCCP is the beef industry’s original USDA Verified Genetic, Source and Age program. Since 1994, the FCCP has been adding value to Red Angus feeder cattle by helping ranchers build a reputation for raising quality calves, providing access for fed cattle to premium products based on genetics vs. hide color, combined with the export premiums of ASV. Bledsoe agreed stating, “We market ASV cattle through our feedlot. Most are harvested through Cargill at Fort Morgan, Colo. Initially, the Tule Oaks cattle caught our attention because they were ASV cattle, giving us an opportunity at additional premiums at slaughter.

Without the Red Angus (FCCP) tags, we might have passed on the calves.� But Tule Oaks has faced its share of challenges. “For this to work, it takes constant communication and working together throughout the year,� said Daly. “We share labor and resources to get the job done as a group,� he added.
“It wasn’t possible for each of us to have facilities to wean calves for 45 days and handle the number of trips through the chute for all the vaccinations to fit the program. But working together, lets us keep our costs down and share expenses,� mentioned Paregien. “We rely on our friends and neighbors, Fred and Teresa Gill, for allowing us to use their facilities for yarding, weighing and shipping our cattle. The groups
can’t thank them enough for their cooperation,� added Daly. “One of our big challenges is checking weights throughout the year from each ranch to make sure we are on target for what we agreed to deliver on shipping day,� stated Daly. “Each of us works hard throughout the year to raise our calves. By working together the price difference we earn by selling in load lot

Wintering your Cattle
Keeping Cattle healthy through winter Snow and high winds like most of us have been experiencing this winter are a bad combination for previously healthy unstressed cows and calves. Not to mention it’s pretty hard on us and our equipment too! We can always put on more clothing and have the option of going back inside to sit in front of the wood or coial stove. But to protect calves and full-grown cattle from the onset of respiratory problems, it’s advisable to keep them dry and out of the wind as best as possible.
Throughout America’s Heartland, many herds remain out on winter range and pasture with little protection from the wind. Moving livestock into protected areas as soon as possible may reduce potential problems. Colder temperatures also raise nutrient requirements of both cows and calves. Extra, high quality forages will be necessary to help livestock maintain their core body temperatures and help keep their immune systems functioning properly. Calves that are showing signs of respiratory problems should be treated and moved indoors or at the very

least into a shelter type structure which provides wind protection with dry bedding to keep them up off of the frozen ground as soon as possible. The sooner calves are cared for after showing signs of sickness, the more effective the treatment will be. However, continuous use of antibiotics as a preventative treatment for respiratory problems is discouraged as drug resistance can become a problem. Another concern producers may be experiencing is water availability for livestock as a result of freezing temperatures, no electric service, or both!
Wintering your Cattle
After a short adjustment period, cows will consume adequate amounts of snow to meet their water requirements. Eating snow is a learned behavior rather than instinct, therefore an adjustment period is needed for the cows to learn how to eat snow. Generally it takes three days for cows to adapt to eating snow. Cattle can do well when snow is their only water source, as long as there is adequate snow present, and it is not hard or crusted over. It is important to monitor your cattle and snow conditions on a daily basis. A lack of water will reduce feed intake, and cows can lose condition very rapidly when water is deficient. If snow hardens and crusts over due to drifting, rain, or thawing and freezing, you will need to provide them with an alternative source of water. Substituting snow for water is not a cure-all, but it can buy some time until range/pasture conditions improve.
Adverse winter weather, like what those of us in the North East are experiencing this winter, can increase costs of production up to 20% or more. Whether in a feedlot or wintering pastures, proper shelter design and maintenance are crucial for keeping your cattle dry, healthy and comfortable under adverse climatic conditions. In a winter like we’re currently experiencing,
cattle maintenance requirements can be over 50% greater in pens containing wet "muddy" cattle, versus dry clean cattle, causing reduced comfort and performance.

Wintering your Cattle
Good pen/shelter/feedlot drainage is critical for minimizing mud. The basic goal is to remove water/urine as quickly as possible from the pen with minimum erosion of soil. Ideally a 5-8% slope away from feeding areas, especially when round bale feeders without bottoms are utilized, should be maintained in the protective shelter/area. Shelter area’s should be designed so that the back of the area stays clean and open to allow drainage to discharge directly into environmentally friendly catch basins/manure holding facilities, until the accumulation of waste material can be safely spread
on your fields. In some areas that could mean needing an area large enough to contain waste until spring!
Construction of concrete pads or aprons (generally 8 feet wide) along feed bunks and around water troughs eliminate much of the competition often associated with feeding areas when mud becomes a problem and good feeding spaces become scarce. Mud tends to accumulate around feeding and watering places due to the soil being worked away while cattle are in these areas. Manure & urine also tends to be concentrated in these areas adding to the mud and moisture problems.
It is essential that pens & shelter surfaces are cleaned regularly, sometimes daily, with any manure or undigested materials being removed from the animal protective area. Also, it’s okay to change to a higher roughage diet when the next snowstorm hits, to minimize overeating or acidosis, but don’t be too aggressive in making those changes. The more stable we can maintain the rumen environment, the better off our cattle will be. So start feeding better forages now so your cattle’s rumen can adjust and build up a resistance to what "Old Man Winter" is apparently only getting started to dish out. Cattle Producers May Need to Supplement Feed to Ensure Successful and Productive Calving Season Producers who want to assure a healthy, productive calving season may want to consider testing their forage supplies to ensure the feed is of high nutritional value, an Ohio State University Extension beef expert said.
Otherwise, feeding poor quality forages to cows in the late gestation or early lactation period can have devastating negative impacts on conception rates in the following breeding season, said John Grimes, beef coordinator for OSU Extension. OSU Extension is the outreach arm of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. If producers find they have poor quality forage, they may want to supplement the feed with higher quality corn for those cows, particularly with first-calf heifers, he said.
“In nearly every cow-calf operation, harvested forages are the primary diet component of winter rations, but we typically know less about those forages than any other feed and health products consumed by the herd,” Grimes said. “It’s easy to over-value hay that looks good in the bale while we may have forgotten how mature it was when it was packaged.” The issue is even more significant this year, considering that the drought of 2012 has been one of the worst on record in Ohio, leaving many livestock producers hard-hit in their pastures and forages, he said.
“The drought caused shorter supplies, so there may be some less desirable hay,”Grimes said. “So if your hay isn’t good enough, you test it and it is nutritionally inferior, you may have to supplement with byproduct feed or corn.” “It’s kind of like the old saying, ‘you pay me now or you pay me later.’ It’s better to supplement substandard hay with expensive corn rather than have poor reproductive performance after calving.”

To that extent, producers should consider sending forage samples in for nutritional analysis before feeding it to late-gestation or early-lactation females to determine its nutritional quality. If the quality is poor, producers may need to balance the ration with corn or grain byproducts to meet the needs of a mature or growing female under production stress, he said.
“Poor quality hay cannot be improved by feeding more poor quality hay,” Grimes said. “If you feed lower quality feed to cows in late-gestation or early-lactation period, they will regress and lose body condition.

“For a cow to calve every year, which producers need in order to pay the bills, the cow needs to rebreed within 90 days of calving, so you need to ensure that females receive feeds that are high in quality and adequate in volume. Producers need to consider when their calving season is and how that relates to the feed they have and how they will distribute that feed.” To ensure a more successful, healthy and productive calving, cows need to maintain adequate body condition scores during critical production times, he said.
“Body Condition Scores (BCS) ranging from 5 to 6 are considered ideal during late gestation or early lactation in this scoring system where 1 is thin and 9 is obese,” Grimes said. “Poor nutrition and declining BCS during late gestation or early lactation can have devastating negative impacts on conception rates in the following breeding season.” Within 30 to 60 days of breeding, producers should consider putting the cow on an inclining or improving nutritional program, he said. While that can be expensive, the costs associated with not improving the nutritional value will be much more costly in the long run, Grimes said.
“It may be painful to buy expensive supplemental feed but be more expensive to have an open cow, which won’t be able to breed,” he said. “If the cow is thin or in poor state of nutrition, she won’t breed or it will take multiple services to conceive. “It’s kind of like the old saying, ‘you pay me now or you pay me later.’It’s better to supplement substandard hay with expensive corn rather than have poor reproductive performance after calving.” ■ Source: Tracy Turner, Ohio State University

Last winter was one of the mildest winters in recent history and so far this winter, most of Oklahoma has escaped any subzero temperatures. Nonetheless, before the spring calving season is over, there is a chance that some calves will be born in very cold winter temperatures. Newborn calves that are not found for several hours after birth and have been exposed to extremely cold temperatures may become hypothermic or very cold stressed. Years ago an Oklahoma rancher called to tell of the success he had noticed in using a warm water bath to revive new born calves that had been severely cold stressed. A quick check of the scientific data on that subject bears out his observation.
Canadian animal scientists compared methods of reviving hypothermic or cold stressed baby calves. Heat production and rectal temperature were measured in 19 newborn calves during hypothermia (cold stress) and recovery when four different means of assistance were provided. Hypothermia of 86º F rectal temperature was induced by immersion in cold water. Calves were re-warmed in a 68 to 77º F air environment where thermal assistance was provided by added thermal insulation or by supplemental heat from infrared lamps. Other calves were re-warmed by immersion in warm water (100º F), with or without a 40cc drench of 20% ethanol in water. Normal rectal temperatures before cold stress were 103º F. The time required to regain normal body temperature from a rectal temperature of 86ºF was longer for calves with added insulation and those exposed to heat lamps than for the calves in the warm water and warm water plus ethanol treatments (90 and 92 minutes versus 59 and 63 minutes, respectively). During recovery, the calves re-warmed with the added insulation and heat lamps had to use up more body heat metabolically than the calves re-warmed in warm water. Total heat production during recovery was nearly twice as great for the calves with added insulation, exposed to the heat lamps than for calves in warm water and in warm water plus an oral drench of ethanol, respectively. This body heat production leaves the calves with less energy to maintain body temperature when returned to the cold environment.

By immersion of hypothermic calves in warm (100º F) water, normal body temperature was regained most rapidly and with minimal metabolic effort; no advantage was evident from oral administration of ethanol. When immersing these baby calves, do not forget to support the head above the water to avoid drowning the calf that you are trying to save. Also make certain that they have been thoroughly dried before returning to the cold weather and the mother. Beef Cattle Water Problems
Winter water supplies complicated for beef cattle producers due to short rainfall.
Many area ponds are low due to the short rainfall during 2012. As cold weather approaches and shallow ponds freeze, there is concern among beef cattle producers about meeting the water needs of their cattle.
"Some farmers are already hauling water so it's a good idea to know how much water different classes of cattle need each day," said Eldon Cole, a livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension. Water requirements vary depending on the cattle's size, lactation status, ration they are eating and ambient temperature. Growing heifers, steers and bulls weighing 600 pounds require 5.3 gallons of water a day when the average ambient temperature is 40 degrees Fahrenheit. FROZEN: Iced ponds are adding to the water shortage for many Missouri cattle producers. As the temperature goes up to 50 degrees, water
needs increase slightly to 5.8 gallons per head per day. Intake at temperatures below 40 degrees does not change much.

or even more. That adds up to over 30 pounds of moisture, which amounts to nearly 4 gallons of water. "In some areas cattle may be grazing pasture that contains around 50% moisture that helps reduce the actual gallons per day required," said Cole.
Pregnant cows need 6 to 6.5 gallons at 40 degrees. Following calving, those same cow's intake for water jumps to roughly 11.5 gallons per day at 40 degrees and 12.6 gallons at 50 degrees. Mature bulls require around 8.5 gallons per day at 40 degrees and below needs increase to 9.4 gallons per head at 50 degrees.
According to Cole, the moisture level of an animal's diet varies and that can influence actual water intake.
"A lot of high moisture haylage and silage will be fed in the coming months. The haylage may contain 50 % moisture and an animal eating 25 pounds of it per day will consume about 12.5 pounds of moisture. This reduces the actual water need by about 1.5 gallons," said Cole. Silage contains around 65 to 70% moisture and intake by cows may run in the 40 to 50 pound per day range,

Beef cattle are sometimes given a supplement containing 10 to 30% plain white salt that allows them to be self-fed. Under these conditions, cattle may drink 50% or more water so be certain ponds, streams or other water sources provide ample water. "Frozen water is less a concern now than in years gone by, thanks to the large number of automatic waters we now see in pastures. Using bedding In The Feedlot During The Winter “To bed or not to bed?” With apologies to William Shakespeare, that is the question on many feedlot managers’ minds as we head into the winter months. Will providing bedding result in enough extra performance to outweigh the additional expenses in both material and labor?
There is research available suggesting advantages to providing bedding during extreme winter weather conditions. In a study conducted in North Dakota at the Carrington Research Extension Center, cattle that were provided bedding gained faster (0.86 pounds increased ADG) and more efficiently than their non-bedded counterparts. These cattle also had increased carcass weights and a greater percentage reaching the USDA Choice quality grade. With today’s feed costs and the increased value for carcasses with higher quality grades, it’s not hard to make the case for providing bedding during very cold or snowy conditions.
In locations and conditions, the benefits to providing bedding are less clear. In a study conducted during the winter of 2005 in northeast Nebraska, bedding provided a performance boost during the first 70 days. However, by the end of the four-month trial, those advantages in gain and efficiency were largely gone.
It’s also important to remember that there are costs associated with providing bedding. Additional labor will be required, not only to put the bedding out in the pen but there will be more material to be hauled and spread when the pen is cleaned. Another consideration is the availability of straw or corn stalk bales to be used for bedding. Buying straw or corn stalk bales could be more difficult or expensive if you have not already secured the necessary supplies of bedding before the snow flies. Depending on conditions, the ability to provide bedding to feedlot pens is certainly a valuable tool to increase cattle comfort and performance during extreme weather conditions in the Northern Plains. Cattle producers should begin making plans and preparations now if they are considering implementing a bedding program. ■

At some point this winter, we will have to deal with cold stress and how to manage it.
If you don’t remember anything else, remember this: A clean and dry hair coat is essential for the animal to maintain body heat. With most winter hair coats, there are longer guard hairs. These keep snow from reaching the denser undercoat that insulates the skin and muscle.
If moisture reaches the skin in the winter, the animal will lose body heat. Likewise, if the hair becomes matted with mud or manure, body heat will be lost. This is why a clean, dry area is essential for the animal. Providing bedding is a good way to help keep the animal dry and warmer. Both oat straw and corn stover are common bedding materials that have good absorbency. In a North Dakota trial, researchers looked at the effect of the amount of bedding (wheat straw) on the winter performance of open feedlot cattle. Bedding treatments were none, modest amount (385 pounds per animal) and generous amount (674 pounds per animal). Bedding increased average daily gain, dressing percent and percentage of carcasses grading Choice. All are good reasons to provide bedding. Another way to increase warmth is to provide a windbreak. An 80% solid fence (or 20% open space) reduces wind speeds for a greater distance and spreads the snow out for faster melting. A minimum height of 10 feet for this fence is recommended for better wind control. Windbreaks can be constructed with wood, metal, or forage bales.
And don’t forget the importance of nutrition. Access to clean, fresh, unfrozen water is essential for dry matter intake. As a rough rule, plan on approximately one gallon of water for every 100 pounds body weight of the animal. Increased heat production by the animal during cold stress also requires increased energy in the diet. The energy needs of the beef animal increase 1% for every degree below 32° for a beef animal with a normal winter hair coat. Think of what you prefer in winter weather. Good housing, a nice winter coat, and plenty of food and drink sound pretty good. Your cattle deserve the same! ■ Source: Beth Doran, ISU Extension beef program specialist

The Ranchers’ Guide to EPDs
Profitable. Simple. Sustainable.
With the goal of simplifying ranchers’ profit equation, Red Angus continues blazing new trails in the pursuit of providing commercial producers with concise genetic predictions.
Based on the concept of Economically Relevant Traits (ERTs), producers are equipped with tools that allow for selection on traits that directly impact profitability. These tools simplify the selection process, and arm producers with the ability to better identify range bulls whose genetics will more positively impact profitability. Red Angus delivers technology in a producer-friendly package. Red Angus’ inclusion of genomic data into EPDs provides genetic predictions with unsurpassed dependability. Expressing these EPDs on a multi-breed base allows for simplified selection decisions regardless of desired breed composition. EPDs are the most reliable predictors of an animal’s true genetic merit. As the only major beef breed to mandate Total Herd Reporting (THR), Red Angus EPDs have the built-in advantage of being calculated from 15 years of complete contemporary group data. EPDs have “fast-tracked” beef cattle improvement and removed much of the guesswork associated with selecting range bulls.
EPDs: What, Why & How?
EPDs predict differences in progeny performance, and are calculated from comparisons within Contemporary Groups. (A group of calves that were born in the same year, calving season, herd, and are of the same sex and were fed and managed alike.)
EPDs have a clear advantage over less sophisticated predictors such as actual weights or within-herd ratios. Actual and adjusted weights are affected by environment, nutrition and management. Contemporary group ratios are an improvement, as they account for these environmental variables. However, they do not incorporate comparative performance data on related individuals in countless herds throughout the country. Red Angus EPDs account for these sources of variation in performance as well as mating bias (which cows were bred to which bulls). The power of these genetic predictions is multiplied by including every contemporary group from herds in the entire Red Angus breed.
Compare EPDs across breeds. All animals in Red Angus and Simmental’s multi-breed database are described using the same language. That is, their EPDs are published on the same multi-breed base and scale. Selection for Growth (BW, WW, YW, Milk) and Carcass (MARB, YG, CW, REA, FAT) EPDs will be greatly simplified as commercial customers will be able to directly compare these EPDs across breeds, as well as registered hybrids/composite seedstock.
Understanding ACCURACY
Absolute performance is not predictable... Relative performance is. For Example: Suppose your old herd bull has a yearling weight EPD of 50. You buy a new bull with a yearling weight EPD of 70. How much will the new bull boost your calves’ yearling weights?
The Answer... We cannot predict how much performance will change from one year to the next because of varying environmental conditions (rainfall, temperature, available feedstuffs, etc). However, we do know this: the calves raised in the same contemporary group sired by your new bull will have the genetics to weigh an average of 20 pounds more at 365 days of age as compared to calves sired by the old bull.
Red Angus EPDs are often presented with a corresponding accuracy value, which measures the strength of the relationship between the genetic prediction (EPD) and true genetic value. Accuracies are reported as a decimal number from zero to one. As accuracy value approaches 1.0, the EPD is "accurately" or closely estimating the true genetic merit of an animal for a given trait. Although low-accuracy EPDs are less reliable when compared to those of proven sires, independent research demonstrates EPDs to be the most meaningful indicator of animals’ true genetic merit. While "perfect" accuracies of 1.0, are never achieved, many heavily used Red Angus sires have accuracies greater than 0.9 (some as high as .99).

EPDs are only as good as the data used to calculate them. This fact led Red Angus to implement Total Herd Reporting (THR) over two decades ago, and Red Angus continues to be the only breed association to mandate THR for the collective Red Angus cowherd. In a nutshell, THR requires the annual production of every Red Angus cow and the performance of every calf raised through weaning to be reported.
Only THR allows for the accurate calculation of fertility and longevity traits, which are the largest drivers in cowherd profitability. With THR, we know which daughters that were exposed to breeding delivered a calf. With THR, we can better predict which bulls’ daughters are able to bring a calf to the weaning pen year after year. Ranchers make more accurate selection decisions and ultimately more profit when they buy bulls whose EPDs are backed by THR.
Jump Starting Accuracy Red Angus’ strong foundation of THR data combines with genomic data from 50K tests to provide EPDs with unsurpassed reliability. The information gained from genomic data can be as informative as a bull’s first calf crop, or a cow’s lifetime production record. Nothing new to learn - this powerful combination of information will simply be delivered to producers in the form of higher accuracy EPDs. Recognizing the importance of heterosis to the success of the beef industry, Red Angus has partnered with the American Simmental Association by merging databases and calculating true multi-breed EPDs. This collaboration allows for the precise determination of heritable genetics and delivers that information to producers in the form of EPDs that can be directly compared, regardless of breed composition.
Cow Herd Building Profit starts at Reproduction!
Placing selection pressure on traits that will have a direct impact on your marketed product (weaned calves, yearlings, carcasses sold in the meat) can certainly increase your revenue on a per-calf basis. However, in order to achieve the higher goal of increased revenue per cow exposed, selection pressure must be placed on cowherd-building traits. Red Angus' commitment to Total Herd Reporting allows for the measurement of each female’s lifetime production history; from being exposed to breeding as a yearling, to measuring females’ productive lifespan. Calving Ease Direct (CED) - predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of 2-year-old heifers. Producers want live calves - born unassisted. Selecting on actual birth weight is flawed; it is influenced by non-genetic factors such as nutrition and weather (ambient temperature). While BW EPD removes these non-genetic factors, Red Angus’ CED EPD is the best predictor of calving ease. The CED EPD includes variation in BW plus other influential genetic factors such as gestation length, calf shape, etc. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. While puberty is a prerequisite, many factors influence pregnancy rate. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers a tool which selects for what is economically relevant to ranchers - pregnant heifers. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) - predicts the probability of a given animal's daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Replacement heifers should be able to calve on their own. Red Angus' CEM EPD offers the industry's most reliable prediction to address that concern. It includes not only the predisposition for a female to calve unassisted, but also her contribution to her calf's traits (birth weight, calf shape, etc.) that make it more likely to be born unassisted. Maintenance Energy (ME) - predicts differences in daughters’ maintenance energy requirements and is expressed in Mcal/Month. Recognizing that 70% of cow herd feed costs are burned up in maintaining weight and condition, Red Angus’ ME EPD allows for the selection of bulls whose daughters will require less feed; thus, reducing cowherd expenses. Include selection pressure for ME EPD to ensure feed costs don’t get out of line when selection is made for greater performance and production.

Excel in Stayability... Excel in Profitability! Improving Stayability enhances cowherd profitability by increasing the percentage of females that deliver pounds and value to the weaning pen without extra labor or feed – and do it year after year.
Red Angus’ Stayability (STAY) EPD is a selection tool to improve overall cowherd efficiency through reducing replacement rate. Cows that stay productive, are problem free and last longer mean a larger percentage of heifers can be cash cropped, instead of developed as replacements. How is Stayability EPD Calculated? Birth Weight EPD (BW) predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of Red Angus' Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD. Weaning Weight EPD (WW) predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW) predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Milk EPD (MILK) predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual animal's daughters as expressed by the weaning weight of their calves. Total Maternal EPD (TM) predicts the rancher's actual observation of weaning weights of calves raised by an animal's daughters. TM includes the daughter’s milk EPD plus half of her genetic contribution to her calf's weaning weight EPD. The formula for TM EPD is: TM EPD = Milk EPD + 1/2 (WW EPD)
Bred-in Carcass Value... Red Angus is preferred among producers who retain ownership of their calf crop. This demand is driven from consistent feedyard performance combined with reaping premiums from value-based grids. Furthering the mission of providing genetic predictions that directly impact producer profitability, Red Angus recently added Carcass Weight (CW) and Yield Grade (YG) to its arsenal of ERTs. Incorporation of these selection tools have the power to take your profitability to the next level.
Marbling Score (MARB) predicts differences for carcass marbling score as expressed in marbling score units. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. Yield Grade (YG) predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score, and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units. YG EPD is calculated using the genetic predictions of CW, REA and FAT EPDs. The reliability of Red Angus’ YG EPD is enhanced by using both ultrasound and actual carcass data in the calculation of REA and FAT EPDs. Carcass W eight (CW) predicts differences in hot carcass weight and is expressed in pounds. Because Red Angus’ CW EPD is a multi-trait model which includes birth, weaning, and yearling weight data, the prediction is not subject to culling bias. Thus, it provides a more reliable EPD as compared to only using actual carcass weights. This computation allows for the use of weights taken on ~57,000 animals per year as compared to only ~1,500 animals per year with actual carcass weight observations. Increased Carcass Weight tends to detrimentally affect Yield Grade; the calculation of which also includes Rib Eye Area and Fat Thickness. Rib Eye Area (REA) predicts differences of carcass Rib Eye Area between the 12th and 13th rib. Increased Rib Eye Area has a beneficial effect on Yield Grade which also includes Carcass Weight and Fat Thickness.
12th Rib Fat Thickness (FAT) predicts differences for carcass fat depth over the 12th rib, as expressed in inches. Increases in fat thickness has a detrimental effect on Yield Grade.

Otley inducted into OCA's Hall of Fame
The strength within the beef industry lies with those who volunteer their time and expertise to improving the business, and Fred Otley of Diamond, Ore., may certainly be characterized as one of those innovative leaders. Otley was the single 2012 inductee into the OCA Hall of Fame in December at the annual Oregon Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) Convention.
The appreciation for the leadership Otley has brought to Oregon, and his efforts to the Oregon Beef Council and the OCA have not gone unnoticed. Fred Otley has served the OCA in some capacity for more than 22 years. He served on the Board of Directors and, in 1996 and 1997, as OCA’s president. In addition to the OCA board, Otley also served on the Oregon Beef Council. Locally he completed more than 20 years of service to the Harney Co. Cattlemen’s Association.
The OCA has a rich history of providing leadership and political presence by promoting a positive industry image and land stewardship, and by strengthening industry economics. Formed in 1913 in Baker County, Ore., this upcoming summer the OCA will celebrate 100 years serving Oregon’s beef industry. The Otley name of Diamond, Ore., is well recognized in the Red Angus circle. Mary Otley and her sons Fred and Harry, and daughter Sherry, were honored as the Red Angus Commercial Ranch of the Year in 2007, and Mary was recognized by the Red Angus Association of American as the 2012 Personality of the Year.
