“My skin just looks phenomenal!” Nicolette with Amy at 4 months

Trusted by mothers Recommended by experts* Stretch marks may cause notable emotional distress to those who develop them. As a common cutaneous condition often associated with pregnancy, they form when excessive stretching causes the skin to tear, resulting in minor scars beneath the surface of the skin. The best defence against stretch marks is to ensure that the skin’s elasticity is maximised throughout pregnancy. Bio-Oil® is specifically formulated to help increase the elasticity of the skin as it expands, thereby helping to reduce the possibility of stretch marks forming. It is recommended that Bio-Oil is applied twice daily throughout pregnancy from the first trimester, particularly on the abdomen and thighs. Bio-Oil’s unique formulation, which contains the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil™, absorbs quickly and leaves no oily residue. It is suitable for all skin types and is available at pharmacies and leading retailers at the following recommended prices: £8.95 (60ml), £14.95 (125ml) and £19.95 (200ml). For more information ask your pharmacist or visit bio-oil.com.

A chance for everyone to jump the queue

Waiting times for treatment in Camden hospitals are likely to reduce further after the NHS publishes its ground-breaking new constitution in April. For the first time, a written NHS constitution will explain patients’ rights to treatment that the Government has promised to guarantee Research has already shown that waiting times for hospital appointments in Camden have shortened but ministers say that all patients will be given a referral within 18 weeks of seeing their GP – potential cancer patients will be referred even earlier, within a maximum of two weeks. The NHS in Camden is working

with the Department of Health to ensure that patients get their views across before the constitution comes out. The constitution will also give all patients 40 and 74 the right to a comprehensive health check. Complementary treatments are also covered, along with dentistry and key issues such as the right of terminally ill patients to die at home. June Brown of Camden Patients Action Group said: “it’s a step in the right direction. The main thing at this stage is making our views known.” MORE INFO More information on the consultation: 08000 463 414 or email haveyoursay@ camdenpct.nhs.uk

Camden Counsel HealthMatters  9

Therapy isn’t simply the preserve of the well-off. If you are stressed, worried or depressed, some sort of psychological help - counselling, therapy - may be available in Camden through your GP. Jo Wynforde reports Shrinks. Lie back on the couch and tell me about your childhood. Analyse this. The common perceptions of psychological treatments do many people a massive disservice – just ask those who benefit from them. Therapists approved by the NHS are not dodgy - and these days therapy is no longer the preserve of the wealthy. You don’t need to be rich, self-obsessed or both to make the most of the psychological therapies that are on offer, free of charge through local authorities. Camden is in the forefront of this project; the NHS has earmarked £1.6 million to cover the cost of psychological therapies in the borough. In recent years psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy have moved in to the mainstream. The Department of Health

Dave, 39, became homeless after splitting up with his wife. Soon after, he lost his job, but has since found some parttime work as a carpenter and is renting a room in a friend’s house. His GP suggested he try some group therapy after complaining about listlessness and depression. is keen to see GPs making the most of all the therapies on offer since they are often seen as a way of dealing with bigger problems before they occur. Research shows that as many as one in four people may be affected by some sort of psychological problem – such as depression – in their lifetime. So what do patients think of the service? HealthMatters talked to one Camden resident - about how NHS Camden psychological therapies

“It’s stupid to suggest that any therapy is some sort of magic wand. But the group work helped me a lot. I found people who were in similar situations to myself and I was able to address my problems in an ordered kind of way. I am in much better shape now and I stil see members of the group for support.”

Many of us underestimate the amount of drinks we manage to put away each week. Doctors recommend no more than 21 units a week for men, 14 for women. But how do you keep track, especially when it slips down so easily?
