The social-emotional well-being of our students is an integral part of a Rectory School education because it plays a significant role in their overall development and future success. “Students need to be content with their setting and themselves for optimal learning to occur,” said Head of School Fred Williams.

“This means we all need to be aware of each child’s social-emotional status, just as we are with their academic status, and we need to work purposefully to establish a respectful, socially and emotionally mindful community.” >>>

The adults at Rectory know that a safe and supportive learning environment is essential for students to thrive emotionally and academically.

This is why they create an environment that promotes a sense of belonging and inclusiveness, where students feel safe, respected, and valued.

To this end, Rectory has a comprehensive student-centered program that places considerable value on students’ social-emotional needs. Whether in elementary or middle school, the Rectory School Creed—Responsibility, Respect, Honesty, and Compassion—sets a standard of behavior that faculty and staff uphold.

Rectory’s Elementary School holistically embraces all aspects of child development and includes experiences that support children’s physical, language, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Director of Elementary Maria Carpenter writes, “To make learning authentic and meaningful for our children, we start with their safety and a promise to honor their social and emotional development.

“This is visible as you walk into our elementary spaces, as the first thing you see is a print of a world map, and above it, the words, ‘I need you to be all of who you are in order for me to be all that I am.’” (Read the entire article on pages 8-9.)

The Middle School academic schedule is designed to lessen transitions and provide opportunities for social time, physical activity, quiet time, and academic enrichment and support. Advisory time is structured within the schedule and allows a faculty member to mentor and support a small group of students in their social, emotional, and ethical development. The health and wellness curriculum teaches students how to manage their emotions, develop positive relationships, and make responsible decisions, skills they will need to navigate the challenges of adolescence and adulthood.

In addition to having set office hours and meetings with students when social-emotional issues arise, counselors develop a plan of action using information that is shared with them. Friday morning meetings are held each week to discuss issues and concerns raised about a student. All adults who surround that student—teachers, dorm parents, coaches, learning specialists, and advisors—gather to discuss accommodations, identify supports, and make recommendations.

Rectory is a close-knit community that prides itself on accepting and celebrating our diverse student body. We recognize the importance of fostering respect for differences of all kinds. In her article on pages 6-7, Rectory’s Co-Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Melissa Zahansky writes, “Educating and providing time and space for [DEIJ] learning was top of mind as we embarked on the new year with no limitations from the pandemic. Our goal was to give faculty the tools they need to have conversations with students about all aspects of their identity and their impact on our community and the greater communities they belong to worldwide.”

As much as the adults support our students, sometimes a gentler touch is required—the touch of a paw. Rectory School is a dog-friendly campus with well-behaved dogs in the classrooms, offices, and dormitories. School Counselor Donna Grant states, “Evidence-based research on developing compassion and empathy in humans is clear.

Research demonstrates the healthy emotional development that occurs in humans during an interaction with a therapeutic animal. Establishing animal relationships has also been proven to be a clear path for young children and vulnerable adults to establish trust.”

With extensive experience supporting adolescents as they navigate what can frequently be a challenging time developmentally, Rectory’s counselors provide students the tools they need to become strong, independent learners and happy and healthy young men and women.

Although Ms. Grant regularly brings her therapy dogs to campus, she stresses that the dogs on campus that are not specifically trained in this capacity provide the unconditional love of a trusted friend that some children need. (Read Ms. Grant’s article on pages 10-11.)

Teaching students about technology is paramount in today’s digital age because it can significantly impact students’ social-emotional well-being, and children are being exposed to technology—like social media and smartphones—earlier and earlier.

According to a recent article by the Pew Research Center, “More than one-third of parents with a child under 12 say their child began interacting with a smartphone before the age of 5.”

While there are many positive aspects of technology—access to information, communication and social connections, creativity and selfexpression, and infinite learning opportunities— there are equally as many adverse effects— cyberbullying, body image issues, fear of missing out, social pressure, and reduced face-to-face interactions. Rectory has policies and procedures to stay consistent with expectations and goals for using technology in the classroom and out—Robert Oakes’ article on pages 12-15 details this topic.

Rectory creates a safe and positive learning environment, understanding that emotions and learning are linked, classroom norms are valuable, and community supports all. Teachers understand the importance of nurturing students culturally, socially, emotionally, and academically.

Rectory’s purpose across these years is to foster students’ confidence, competence, and character development to be successful, contributing, conscientious citizens of the many communities they belong to.

Restorative circles are an inclusive practice, ensuring all voices are heard, to build community by engaging in conversations with various topics that apply to all aspects of Rectory life.

By Melissa Zahansky, Co-Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice DEIJ work has always been and remains a priority at Rectory. This past year, we validated that commitment by verbalizing our DEIJ philosophy and applying it intentionally.

The social-emotional well-being of a student, or any individual, is tied to success in all facets of their life, and our role in fostering that growth is vital. Educating and providing time and space for this learning was top of mind as we embarked on the new year with no limitations from the pandemic. Our goal was to give faculty the tools they need to have conversations with students about all aspects of their identity and their impact on our community and the greater communities they belong to worldwide. After much research, we found a social-emotional, community-building program called “Restorative Practices” and committed to our first tangible strategy: bettering the Rectory experience one conversation at a time.

In November, faculty gathered for the first of four sessions, culminating in 7.5 hours of experiential training, to learn about affective statements (a way to communicate to another person about how they have affected you by their behavior, either positively or negatively) by practicing with colleagues. We began implementing the second tangible strategy, restorative circles, immediately through our Advisory block held twice weekly. Restorative circles are an inclusive practice, ensuring all voices are heard, to build community by engaging in conversations with various topics that apply to all aspects of Rectory life. Faculty had many opportunities to facilitate these circle conversations during our professional development and Advisory period. They began implementing these strategies into their pedagogy in classrooms, dorms, and locker rooms. Our goal for the upcoming year is to allot time during monthly faculty meetings to practice

and reflect on these practices to ensure all faculty and staff have these tools at the ready.

Faculty weren’t the only ones growing and learning this year. On April 2, twenty students and three teachers traveled to the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools’ (CAIS) Student Diversity Leadership Conference at the Hopkins School in New Haven, Connecticut.

The mission of the event is “to bring students from grades 7-12 and adults from independent schools across the state together for a day of networking and dialogue, facilitating crosscultural understanding and a call to action to improve our school communities and our world.”

They offered student sessions by grade; our 7th and 8th graders attended “Language and Words Matter,” while the 9th graders participated in “Stereotypes, Prejudice & Discrimination Unpacked.” Listening to and hearing others’ stories and experiences, along with sharing their

own, was one of the most impactful takeaways for our group.

Another space we provide for social-emotional growth is SHIELD. (Student Happiness, Inclusion, Equity, Leadership & Difference), our studentled, faculty-facilitated empowerment group. This group meets weekly to discuss current events and trends at Rectory, and most importantly, they educate the community on the different identities and cultures that make up our school.

One of their goals last year was to create a student survey to gather information on the diverse celebrations our students observe and educate and honor them during our daily morning assembly. These presentations were all student-led and thoughtfully and respectfully acknowledged who we are as a community.

When asked what SHIELD meant to our current students, they replied earnestly stating, “SHIELD is a space I can unwind and talk about topics I

hear on campus and share my problems, and I will always receive an honest, caring response” and “...a group where many connections, feelings, thoughts or current events are shared… always trying to improve our campus and to help others.” Each year in SHIELD, the student representation is unique, and the matters they deem most impactful are just as unique, but what remains a constant is providing a safe, respectful place where students can express themselves.

As we look at the year ahead, our dedication to embedding DEIJ into the fabric of the school culture remains consistent. We will continue to provide space and time to educate our faculty and students on inclusive practices while providing consistent opportunities to practice empathy and communication skills, enabling students to form meaningful connections and relationships, directly impacting their overall success at Rectory and beyond.

Social-Emotional Learning At

Rectory Is Elementary Rectory’s Elementary School is committed to designing developmentally appropriate experiences for the growth and well-being of our children. We do this by holistically embracing all aspects of child development and are mindful to include experiences that support children’s physical, language, cognitive, and social-emotional development.

The NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) shares that “all domains of child development— physical, cognitive, social and emotional, and linguistic development, as well as approaches to learning—are important; each domain both supports and is supported by the others.” To make learning authentic and meaningful for our children, we start with their safety and a promise to honor their social and emotional development.

The connection between having the children begin their day and attaching them to the world around them was intentional.

We celebrate all children who come through our doors as unique individuals and recognize that when we are kind and do our best, we will all be better together.

The Elementary faculty model this behavior to the children by embracing conversations that show that we are stronger when we listen to each other and share ideas. We also make connections between the content of the curriculum and how it applies to lessons, our lives, and even the world around us.

The children witness our respect and love for each other, and when we listen, we can challenge each others’ thinking and offer support, especially when others in our community need help and are struggling.

We have designed several traditions to

model the value that we place on our children’s social-emotional well-being in our classrooms. Here are a few of them: Morning Meeting

At the beginning of each day, students gather in a circle with their teacher and greet each other by welcoming each friend and making eye contact. The Leader of the Day shares the daily schedule and completes a variety of routines that may include CNN 10 in the older classrooms and a Book Share or the Word of the Day in the younger classrooms. The Morning Meeting format is a cornerstone of the Responsive Classroom approach, which states that children need to learn cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control to succeed socially and academically.

Monthly gatherings

One day each month, the Elementary School (ES) children come to school in their “formal attire” and gather together as a K-4 community. Our elders in grade 4 lead the meeting, and the children in the younger classrooms share poems, writings, and ideas that connect their ideas to the monthly theme by speaking in front of the others on a microphone. Some themes have included: goals, giving thanks, love, community service, and growth.

Elementary school Affirmation

During our Monthly Gatherings (and whenever a child needs a little inspiration),

they recite words to encourage each other to be our best selves: “I Am Smart, I Am Kind, and I Can Do Hard Things!”

Rectory School Creed

An essential piece of the Rectory School mission is the four words we share as our School Creed: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Compassion. The Elementary classrooms each have a visual memory box with the four creed words displayed on the outside. Each week, children take notice when a peer has shown one of these character traits and write it down on a note card. When we gather at the end of the week, each note card is read aloud to celebrate how our children reach out to make a difference to others.

The social and academic experiences of a child are equally important to us.

We feel strongly that when a child feels safe and secure, they will be more likely to take academic risks, fostering their academic growth. At the end of the school year, Wren (one of our third graders) reflected on her growth and shared, “I have grown a lot since the beginning of the year, with friendships and writing, and so much more.

But everyone can do it, and everyone does it at their own pace, which is good because everyone has their ‘just right’ place here.”

We agree, Wren. Rectory is a “just right” place for everyone!

As a child, all my best friends had four feet. Every bad day was better once I was with my dog...or my rabbit...or my sheep. I learned at an early age the powerful healing forces that lay under the velvet coats and downy fleeces of my childhood support system. My adult years have been significantly influenced by my animals as well, and I have often plotted and schemed to ensure the children I cared about had access to a pet. I suppose it was destiny that I would pursue a career in psychotherapy and eventually understand the science behind the magic of my youth.

At a transition point in my career, I was asked to join the Rectory faculty.

It was an easy decision once I learned the Rectory community maintained such a commitment to having a strong canine presence on campus.

At Rectory, we know how hard middle school can be for any adolescent, especially those attending a junior boarding school. We also know that any challenge is easier to face when you have a friend to face it with. Knowing a true friend’s value, we ensure they are available...all over campus. These friends come with wet noses, four feet, and a tail, providing companionship and unconditional love to our kids.

Rectory prides itself on being a caninefriendly campus. Faculty are encouraged to bring their well-socialized, friendly pets to the dorms, classrooms, and offices. Dogs can be seen walking through the halls with students, chasing a ball at break, or providing emotional support to a student who needs an understanding friend.

Evidence-based research on developing compassion and empathy in humans is clear. Research demonstrates the healthy emotional development that occurs in humans during an interaction with a therapeutic animal.

Establishing animal relationships has also been proven to be a clear path for young children and vulnerable adults to establish trust.

In the academic environment, we understand the importance of socialemotional learning. Building a strong connection with a student allows us to develop trust. That trust becomes the foundation on which we can establish expectations. Student success, which is wholly dependent on meeting or exceeding expectations, begins with a connection, and for many of our students, that connection begins with a dog.

Animal therapy is a widely accepted modality in psychotherapy today, but at Rectory, animals are integrated into our community as a part of our campus family. Their therapeutic qualities are known to many faculty, but to our students, they are simply campus pets.

The benefits of Rectory’s “CanineFriendly Campus” are many:

Handling animals reduces aggressive and anxious feelings and counteracts depression.

Interacting with an animal immediately releases hormones that support well-being.

Successfully handling animals builds self-esteem and selfconfidence.

Interacting with an animal is an important first step to connecting with other people.

By establishing a connection to an animal, a student can share a caretaking role, which empowers them to accept responsibility.

Animals do not judge; this unconditional love allows young people to establish immediate nonverbal, positive communication and acceptance.

Being physically active with an animal improves physical and mental health, and the interaction can help break negative thought patterns.

Having an animal to connect with may feel ‘familiar’ and help to alleviate homesickness.

Animals give students a way to accept companionship without unhealthy attachments.

Animals give young people a way to establish responsible habits and regular routines.

Animals allow people to be vulnerable without fear, which allows the development of healthy coping strategies.

These benefits can be noted across campus. In a classroom where a dog has established regular residency, students can be found on the floor petting the dog while reading a book or calming themselves after receiving some disappointing news. Our canines are patient; they wait as long as it takes for a student to feel better.

In our Elementary School, the regular presence of a furry friend provides a safe space for emerging readers to read aloud to a receptive, non-critical audience of one. The presence of canines in libraries for young readers has been proven to increase literacy

scores and reading comprehension.

For students who are experiencing heightened emotion, it is incredible to watch as they go from shoulders tight, face askew, lips drawn tight, and fists clenched to hands open petting a dog, shoulders softened, body relaxed, and eventually a comforting, and most often constructive, conversation. MAGIC! Students relish the presence of dogs (and cats!) on the Rectory campus.

Students can be found cuddling in a common room with Mr. and Mrs. Oakes’ Great Pyrenees, Oscar.

They are seen cavorting across the fields during morning break with Mrs. Zahansky’s chocolate Labrador, Reese, and reading to Mrs. Carpenter’s Rosie in the Elementary School. On occasion, there may be a student crying into the soft curls of a poodle in residence in our Counseling office, Hailey, Maggie, or Mercy, or relaxing in the Learning Center with Ms. Morano’s Alaskan Klee Kai puppies. Regardless of where or why they take place, we know each of these interactions is invaluable in supporting our students’ emotional growth and development at Rectory.

Safety Is “IT” At Rectory

By Robert Oakes, Associate Director of Communications The safety and well-being of our students are always at the top of mind for Director of Technology Donna Dubinsky.

“It is a sacred responsibility,” she said. “We are the adults in their life at school in loco parentis. We are their parents when they are here, and we are responsible for protecting them.” >>>

With that in mind, the Technology Department has established several protocols and protections to keep our students safe while accessing the Internet.

Any online activity on a student’s Chromebook must pass through protective filters—the Cloud-based applications known as GoGuardian and Beacon—before reaching them. Any offensive or inappropriate content is blocked, and a notification is sent to the Technology team to alert them of the attempt to access it. These same filters apply even when students use their personal tech—which boarding students have access to in the evenings and weekends while on dorm—so long as they connect to the Internet via the school’s wireless network. All school-issued devices are enrolled in GoGuardian, so even if the students are off campus—even in another country— their Internet use is similarly filtered while on that device. Any content related to pornography, violence, or other harmful topics is blocked, as are many videos available on sites like YouTube.

Suppose the Technology team receives a notification that an attempt was made to access inappropriate content. In that case, a tech team member will often call the student in to discuss it with them, or, for more sensitive issues, School Counselors Donna Grant or Justin Bendall will have a conversation with them. If the behavior continues, the Dean of Students Evan Campbell is brought in.

“Nine times out of ten, it turns out to be something very innocuous,” said Mrs. Dubinsky. “There’s usually nothing going on, but it gives us a sense of what kids do online. And that helps us stay on top of it. Above all, we want to ensure we don’t miss anything.”

Sometimes it isn’t so much about the substance of the content as it is about the time when students are trying to access it—during class, for example.

“If we notice that a student is often trying to go to a gaming site during a certain class,” she said, “I’ll bring them in and ask them, why are you always trying to game during that class? I’ll try to help them figure out a way to advocate for themselves so they don’t have to feel like they have to go off somewhere else.”

Mrs. Dubinsky understands that games, videos, and other non-educational content can be very tempting to students, and she believes that, ultimately, they must be taught to use these tools well and wisely.

“It’s about learning to keep yourself focused when you’re supposed to be focused and then give yourself that reward when you don’t need to be,” she said.

And should students ever come upon content that may be upsetting, it’s vital to help them process it. It’s also important to help students distinguish between accurate and misleading information and understand the lasting impacts of their social media posts and presence.

Providing this guidance at a young age is especially important—before they reach high school.

“This sets a foundation for responsible use,” she said. “And hopefully, they can internalize and filter it for themselves.

Above all, I aim to help them understand that technology is a tool like any other.

When used correctly, it can be beneficial, and it can be entertaining. But I also want them to know that there is a darker side to it that can have a negative, lasting impact. I don’t want to scare them. I just want them to understand.

And I want them to be safe.”

The philosophy of the Athletic department carries out key components of the Rectory School mission. By allowing students to participate in a sport every season, the Athletic program provides them with an enriched social community. With the ample number of teams, different sports, and levels, we provide the opportunity for students to play at their individual aptitude. The coaches create a supportive and ethical environment for the students, and through the commitment of playing a sport and being on a team, students develop self-worth and accountability. Above all else, coaches and students live by the Rectory School Creed: Responsibility, Respect, Honesty, and Compassion.

fall sports Coaches and players focused on developing team chemistry and skill sets to best prepare them for competitions. With varsity, junior varsity, and recreational levels making up ten teams, the sports

lineup included boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball, cross country, flag football, equestrian, and fall adventures. Highlights of the season included the return of flag football after a five-year hiatus; the varsity volleyball team had a great season with 11 wins out of their 12 matches; and the girls varsity soccer team was awarded the Sportsmanship Award at the Indian Mountain Tournament. All teams worked hard and exhibited significant improvement throughout the season.

most of their schedules, allowing them to show their improvement. The winter sports lineup included 11 teams of basketball, fencing, fitness, hockey, squash, swimming, and winter warriors. The squash team had a very successful season, only posting two losses. The team represented athletes from grades 6-9, which means the future is strong for Rectory’s squash program. Rectory’s swimmers demonstrated their drive to improve as they faced primarily high school teams. After a challenging loss at the beginning of the season, the swim team dug deep and was very successful in the win column. The varsity hockey team found success in the final weeks of the season as they defeated Avon Old Farms and Rumsey Hall and finished second in the Rumsey Tournament. The boys varsity A basketball team had a successful season, with the highlight being a win at Wilbraham & Monson Academy. The girls varsity basketball focused on skill building and increasing their basketball IQ. The results showed throughout the season, with the highlight being a win against Woodstock Academy. All athletes made significant progress throughout the season.

2022-2023 ATHLETICS

spring sports Athletes worked to perfect techniques and team strategies throughout the spring season. Ten teams represented baseball, golf, lacrosse, softball, spring adventures, tennis, and track & field. Highlights of the season

included naming a hole at CT National Golf Course to an athlete who has been on the Rectory golf team for four years; the seventh hole at CT National is now the Anson D’Alleva Bochain Hole. The boys varsity lacrosse team laid the foundation for future years with plenty of learning opportunities and some competitive, high-level play and teamwork. The team had a phenomenal Fay Tournament as they won four of their five games with an impressive showing. The girls varsity lacrosse had an excellent record thanks to goals from 12 different players, amazing stops from defense, and beautiful transitions from mid-field. Baseball highlights included a no-hitter against Fay School, every player who traveled to the game against Wheeler getting a hit, and Greyson P. ’24 hitting a cycle (single, double, triple, and a home run all in one game). The tennis team finished with eight wins and three losses as a team. The season highlight was the last match against Hillside, where every 9th grader played and won, and Lyke Yoon ’23 finished an undefeated career at Rectory.

campus recap moon festival On September 10, a group of Rectory parents celebrated the Chinese Moon Festival by sharing delicious mooncakes and other treats with the School community. As ninth-grader Jennie Chen ‘23 explained: “In China, the Moon Festival is a time that family members gather together to have a big dinner, eat mooncakes, offer thanks for the fall harvest, and pray for longevity and good fortune. The Moon Festival is linked with the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is related to the story of Hou Yi and Chang E (known as the Moon Lady). The reason the Chinese eat mooncakes during this festival is that the round shape of the mooncake symbolizes completeness and togetherness. In addition, the full moon on that day represents the prosperity and reunion of the family.” Thank you to the parents who shared those wonderful treats and this beautiful tradition!

enrichment series returns!

Rectory’s Enrichment Series returned this year after a COVIDrelated hiatus. This series allows students to have hands-on experiences on campus rather than traveling to locations for typical field trips. The School brings organizations on campus, which enable students to participate in unique learning opportunities without taking them away from their other classes for an entire day.

On October 20, traveling programs from The Children’s Museum of West Hartford, CT, visited our campus as part of our Enrichment Series, offering optional opportunities to students in grades five through seven. Students could touch hissing cockroaches, a chinchilla, a python, and a gecko and learn how these animals adapt to their environments to meet their needs. Grades seven through nine were allowed to analyze variables and discover the causes of chemical experiments by engaging in a science lab.

This year’s series also included visits from Nakai Northup, head of education at Pequot Museum; Mystic Seaport for programs about whales and whaling, rope-making, and navigation by sextant; Fermcroft Wildlife Preserve; and the New England Science Foundation.

Mrs. Carpenter invited Associate Director of Communications and Author Robert Oakes to speak to the third graders. “I didn’t know it at the time,” said Mr. Oakes, “but I was being offered a chance to connect some of the most meaningful parts of my life, thanks to Mrs. Carpenter’s knack for making connections.”

elementary students make gingerbread houses Before winter break, Elementary School students and their families gathered in the Dining Hall to decorate gingerbread houses that were later delivered to members of our local community. The spirits of joy and generosity were palpable that day!

chris waddell In November, Paralympic World Champion Chris Waddell spoke to the Rectory community about developing resiliency and overcoming adversity to achieve what seems impossible.

He shared his journey from suffering a devastating skiing accident to winning the most medals of any male monoskier in Paralympic history and becoming the first nearly unassisted paraplegic to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro. Throughout his presentation, he encouraged students to repeat this phrase: “It’s not what happens to you; it’s what you do with what happens to you.”

tall towers Students in sixth-grade art class unveiled their tall tower project during an assembly in December as part of “This Is Art Fridays,” when students share completed or in-progress visual art pieces with the greater student body. The sixth grade created skyscrapers using simple materials, giving each structure a name, a function, and a dedication. One team modeled their skyscraper after the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. The other created a skyscraper that could head to space for out-of-this-world apartment living!

This spring at Rectory, the big news was Newsies Jr., a musical about New York City newspaper hawkers at the turn of the last century who must battle big business exploitation. It celebrates the power of the little guy and gal in the face of overwhelming odds—but only if they band together. And what better way is there to bring such a story to the stage than through the collaboration of the various Related Arts departments and a large contingent of students, helped by contributions from faculty and friends experienced in choreography, acting, lighting, and stagecraft?

Just before the ninth-grade graduation, class members gathered for the annual “sweatshirt photo,” representing all of the secondary schools our seniors will attend next year. snowball dance Another return of a student favorite, the Snowball Semi-Formal Dinner Dance, was held on February 24. All had a fantastic time.

rectory regatta The Rectory community gathered at the pond in May to participate in a much-beloved year-end tradition, the Rectory Regatta. Students built boats from cardboard and duct tape, and teams competed in several categories. The winners were The Murphy Lady Bug—Most Adorable, The Faraway Blue Ferrari—Best Teamwork, The North Hamilton Black & Pink—Best Team Uniforms, The South Hamilton Unicorn Casual—Best Headgear, The Dining Dorm Shark—Most Enthusiastic, The Upper Memorial Dragon—Best Design, The Upper DGB Rectory Bus—Best Idea, The Lower DGB Moana Boat—Most Surprising, and The Lower Memorial Hawaiian Unicorn—Overall Winner and Best Boat. But the true competition was simply to see whose boat could stay afloat the longest.

cafe murder mystery In May, the Vanilla Bean Cafe was transformed into Cafe Murder as members of the ninth-grade acting class performed a murder mystery for an audience of classmates, family, faculty, and friends under the direction of Mrs. Bessette. All had a great time as the patrons watched the scene unfold, then tried to guess whodunnit, and the students practiced their acting and improv skills.

black and orange days During May’s Black & Orange Day, after the morning’s competitions, students dove into afternoon activities, including a trip to We-Lik-It Ice Cream, pickleball, dodgeball, baking in the Dining Hall, a jam session in the Tang, drawing in the Art Barn, a home run derby, and a giant Slip ‘n Slide.

student diversity leadership conference On April 2, twenty students and three teachers traveled to the CAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference at the Hopkins School in New Haven, Connecticut. “The mission of the event is to bring students from grades 7-12 and adults from independent schools across the state together for a day of networking and dialogue, facilitating cross-cultural understanding and a call to action to improve our school communities and our world.” They offered student sessions by grade, and our 7th and 8th graders attended “Language and Words Matter,” while the 9th graders participated in “Stereotypes, Prejudice & Discrimination Unpacked.” Listening to and hearing others’ stories and experiences, along with sharing their own, were among the most impactful takeaways from our group.

Today, we gather to honor our incredible students as they embark on a new chapter in their lives. With hearts full of pride and excitement, we applaud the dedication, resilience, and countless milestones that have brought us to this memorable day.

Parents, you have been the unwavering pillars of support, nurturing the dreams and aspirations of these young stars. To our graduates, your perseverance, infectious enthusiasm, and thirst for knowledge have paved the way for success. From navigating the intricate maze of algebra to crafting imaginative stories, you have shown us the true essence of determination.

Today, we celebrate the indomitable spirit of these remarkable young individuals. They are the architects of our future, armed with knowledge, compassion, and the audacity to dream big. So let us cherish this moment, rejoice in their accomplishments, and embrace the bright times ahead.

Not a bad intro if you ask me. The supportive tone is there; a thank you to the parents and an inspiring send-off as our graduates move to the future. The only thing missing is a recognition of our faculty and staff, who have been instrumental and relentless in our graduates’ successes. Let’s take care of that right now as I ask you to join me in acknowledging this incredible group seated to my left.

This omission, however, is not my fault. Blame Chat GPT as it constructed this welcome with a simple prompt from me asking it to write a three-paragraph introduction to a middle school graduation.

This Chat GPT experiment, inspired by both curiosity and you, graduates, provides an opportunity to leave you with one last departing message as you finish one stage of your academic career and move forward to another. This message centers on what I hold to be an uncontested truth in the world of academia: never have the tools of productivity been more prevalent, more efficient, and more controversial.

When I was in middle school, a Bic four-color ballpoint pen was sophisticated technology. In comparison, you, graduates, have near-constant access to the world’s knowledge on the Internet.

Software can check all aspects of spelling, grammar, and punctuation in your writing. Peers can collaborate on one document simultaneously from anywhere in the world. And now Chat GPT can write you a song, poem, research paper, or graduation intro in whatever length, form, or style you choose…within seconds. Given all of this, graduates, as you receive your Rectory diplomas and move forward through school and into careers, the challenge for you will be less about getting the work done and more about establishing your authentic voice and presenting it as the primary source.

Fortunately, there are numerous indications the Rectory Class of 2023 understands and is embracing this charge. Just ask HQ a question about Bitcoin, and his voice will go nonstop with his own strong opinions until you have invested all your savings.

Or ask Andres what exactly constitutes a sandwich.

While this later topic may seem unimportant to all but Andres, he has clearly defined his own personal views on this topic and is passionate about sharing.

The same was true for each of you when, with a much more pressing purpose, you educated us with your 50 unique Capstone projects, including one by Nathaniel Im on Chat GPT. In completing your Capstone, your voice became expert on your topic, and you positioned yourself as a change agent. After spending significant time considering various perspectives and analyzing data, you developed your own views on the issues.

With that in hand, you generated action plans and solutions to address your unique causes using genuine—not artificial—intelligence, and you shared these expertly and passionately at the Capstone Fair.

Most impressively and most importantly, you have begun to put ideas into action. As an example, Clara Dowdle’s effort in making a positive change for her issue—the plight of African migrants—resulted in a Rectory service trip to ACE Academy, an important educational and cultural resource for these migrants.

These hard-earned, individually driven, deeply embedded learning opportunities offer far more than anything AI can generate.

In responding to my graduation query, Chat GPT was able to provide me with a presentable product in seconds. However, I could take no pride or ownership in the response, nor could I claim having learned anything. Contrast this with the hours Rita Zhou has put into practice in the Tang. Over and over and over again, she sings the same song, varying notes, pitch, and timing until she gets it right. Last night you heard the results. We were awed, and she demonstrated in her own authentic voice that meaningful growth and true learning only occur over time. No request to AI will improve one’s voice.

Only dedicated practice will do that; that is what makes the end result so satisfying.

My first foray into Chat GPT revealed that receiving results was easy. But there was no sense of satisfaction because success without some degree of struggle is empty. This is why, cast members, there was such a celebration after your final performance of Newsies, Jr. The months of hard work, learning lines, mastering the choreography, and perfecting the interplay between the characters, resulted in a show all rightfully took pride in. As opposed to my cut and paste, your hard work in the face of challenge and uncertainty paid off in the quality of the performance and the corresponding satisfaction you rightfully felt for a job well done.

Graduates, you have conquered the academic, artistic, athletic, and social challenges at Rectory, not through simple AI requests but through your own hard work. In doing so, you have projected and strengthened your voices and made them uniquely your own and full of value resulting in successes ripe with satisfaction. You, the members of the Class of 2023, stand out because of who you are as individuals—your strengths, your flaws, your perspectives, and your genuine human characteristics. May this always be the case.

Class of 2023, this moment this morning is yours and well earned. Congratulations on all you have accomplished and all there is to come.

From “Not much happens at Rectory” to seeing it all: Nurse Newman’s distinguished career

John Frank ’52 and Fred Williams present the Distinguished Service Award to Dan Newman.

The Farrand Training School for Nurses established the Nightingale Pledge. This pledge, the nurse’s equivalent of the Hippocratic Oath, named in honor of Florence Nightingale, lays out expectations for all in the nursing profession. These expectations call for nurses to cooperate faithfully with the other members of the nursing team and to carry out faithfully and to the best of one’s ability the instructions of the physician assigned to supervise one’s work, to work devoid of malice, and to always respect the confidentiality of the patients in one’s care. Most importantly, nurses are to always act in a way that will raise the standards and the prestige of practical nursing.

For just over 40 years on the Rectory campus, Dan Newman has fulfilled all requirements in this pledge and so much more, and he has first and foremost cared for the well-being of our community, dressed in his colorful scrubs.

Dan was the ever-present force ready to respond to any need that came to the doors of the Rogers Infirmary. In fact, he made that space his own in so many ways. The walls were adorned with pieces of historical artwork from a personal collection he generously shared with Rectory, and he maintained the space in a manner that demonstrated a reverence for the past while modernizing the services offered to our students.

I, too, am a fan of history, and I appreciate the respect Dan showed our medical space. However, I was even more impressed with his ability to tend to our children.

It’s often been stated at Rectory that if you’re in need of medical care, you want to be seen by Nurse Newman.

As former Head of School Tom Army stated during Mr. Newman’s time, “His performance has been nothing 30

THE RECTORY NEWS | FALL 2023

short of outstanding. He attends to the details of his work with a conscientious enthusiasm.” Mr. Green, head of school prior to Mr. Army, shared in a note to Mr. Newman, “Once again, you have come to the rescue,” as Dan determined how to meet new regulations regarding first aid supplies and student transport vehicles. This was but one of the many times Mr. Newman saved the day, whether at Rectory or beyond.

A captain of the emergency medical technicians for the Pomfret Fire Department, Dan did not limit his skills and his care to Rectory, much to the community’s benefit. In fact, Dan was singled out by the director of the Connecticut Office of Emergency Medical Services for his exemplary service in the face of disaster in 1987, when an industrial fire in Putnam threatened both buildings and lives, and Mr. Newman’s contributions helped divert a catastrophe. As the director stated, “Your service area and fire department should be proud of the way you assumed your duties and faced your responsibility, not only with enthusiasm and dedication, but with knowledge and expertise.”

On this day, Dan was singled out because of his work associated with his EMT position, but on any other day, Dan might get similar praise for his work as an American Red Cross nurse, a Boy Scout counselor, a training official for Putnam and Pomfret ambulance services, or as a veteran of the US Army. All these roles combine to give Mr. Newman a rich bank of stories and experiences. In fact, while Mrs. Levesque is our appointed school archivist, I would argue that besides her, Mr. Newman knows more about Rectory School history and lore than any other past or current employee. This includes an extensive collection of entertaining accounts of student follies and foibles

dating back to Dan’s first visit while interviewing for a nursing physician.

Mr. Newman remembers the verbal job description he was told being something to the effect of, “Not much happens here on campus.” Within minutes, a Rectory student walked through the Infirmary door, bloodied from head to toe after falling off a roof. Dan saw a lot in his time at Rectory. While Dan is associated with many distinguished acts, there’s one gesture that, for me, most clearly reveals who he is as a person and what he means to this school.

In the summer of 2013, somewhere between her sophomore and junior years of high school, we received the horrific news that Rectory alum Lucy Wang had died of leukemia. Faced with the challenge of overcoming this tragedy, Mr. Newman not only proposed the establishment of the Lucy Wang Memorial Garden, he was the lead donor behind the effort.

Every time I walk by this garden that sits at the entrance of the Infirmary, I’m reminded of Lucy and the joyful memories of her time with us. Mr. Newman made that possible and helped lessen our community’s pain, just as he has done so often with the countless student and teacher maladies that crossed the Infirmary threshold. Dan, we are forever grateful for all you have done for our Rectory community, our local community, and our country.

In appreciation for your four-plus decades of exemplary service to our School, I’m proud to present you with the 2023 Distinguished Service Award. Thank you, Dan.

In a league of his own: Rectory record holder Theron Foley ’87

When does greatness first appear in life? And what allows some to maintain this greatness as the ponds get bigger and bigger? These questions are easily answered when considering Theron Foley, this year’s inductee into the Rectory School Athletic Wall of Honor.

Greatness for Theron appears to have begun pretty much at birth. His application to Rectory, completed by his parents when Theron was but 10 years old, lists more accomplishments and accolades than many of us will acquire in a lifetime. These include notable distinctions in: n

Soccer, where his elite team had already won three conference championships. During this run, Theron was high scorer all three years and was twice selected as a Southeast All-Star.

n

Swimming, where Theron received invitations to the county meet for freestyle and butterfly three years running, in Georgia no less, where swimming is especially competitive.

n

Track, where Theron was a finalist for the Fulton County meet as well as a finalist at the Georgia state meet where he competed in the 50, 100, 220, and 440.

To no one’s surprise, in response to the hobbies question listed on Theron’s Rectory application, the answer was: “all sports.”

Despite playing against older, more physically-advanced competition, Theron’s Rectory years only further cemented his fame. In four years, across three sports— football, hockey, and lacrosse—Theron demonstrated excellence and was an integral part of the success his teams achieved. This is most evident in Theron’s final stunning ninth-grade season in football. In addition to being voted captain and receiving the MVP award at season end, along the way, Theron set the following records: n

Outside of records, the comment Coach [Walter] Dagle wrote summing up Theron’s performance more importantly noted, “The above statistics tell a glorious story about a very dedicated young athlete.

His intensity, dedication, loyalty, and toughness are the best I’ve seen in 26 years of coaching. This boy is a fine person. He knows what discipline is all about. He knows how to lead.” Coach [Tom] Washburn echoed this sentiment in Theron’s hockey comment, sharing, “If there is one boy who shows leadership and good work ethics through his own efforts, Theron is the one.

He enjoys working hard in practice and is always trying to improve his individual as well as team play.”

While Theron’s Rectory years are a highlight reel of greatness spilling across all of his sports, what stands out more is the effort and attitude fueling his success.

In Theron’s secondary school recommendation, Mr. [Keith] Cassell, Rectory’s secondary school counselor, noted, “There are few boys who are dedicated enough to give up a portion of their summer’s day, I do mean every single day, to come back to campus and run the fields and cross country trails.” Theron’s drive was legendary and earned him the John Frazer Austin Cup given to the student who “best exemplifies the Rectory fighting spirit that will not allow him to quit.” Earning this award once is one of Rectory’s highest honors.

Theron did it twice—in eighth grade and then again in ninth. No other student has ever received a named award in successive years.

Theron’s success at Rectory is legendary, but even in the bigger ponds at Avon Old Farms and then Ohio Wesleyan University, Theron stood head and shoulders above the rest. At Avon, Theron received the Lance Odden Award given to the Division 1 high school offensive player of the year in football, and he was selected as an All-American and played in the Brine East/West Lacrosse all-star game serving as captain for the east team.

At Ohio Wesleyan, Theron led his lacrosse team to Midwest Lacrosse Association and North Coast Athletic Conference championships and a spot in the NCAA Division III championship game against Hobart. During his career at OW, he earned All-NCAC

and All-American selections multiple times. He was also invited to play in the college North-South all-star game. Even in the biggest of ponds, Theron achieved standout success.

Returning to Rectory, then Head of School John Green expounded on the broad impact Theron had on School life, “No boy in the school has received any stronger reports than Theron. On the field, in the classroom, everywhere, Theron is an outstanding example of the value of persistence and determination—qualities Theron could have invented.”

Today we induct Theron Foley into the Rectory School Athletic Wall of Honor. In doing so, we put his athletic accomplishments front and center. In the process, Theron’s achievements, as detailed by his coaches, remind us of two crucial lessons. The first lesson is that while Theron was a gifted athlete, he excelled because of his hard work and effort. The second lesson is that sports provides a training ground for who we are or want to be as a person. It is clear Theron’s stature as a person equaled if not exceeded his otherworldly athletic statistics.

In hindsight, though Rectory was one of Theron’s smaller ponds, that does not diminish the importance of these formative middle-school years. As he shared with us recently, “One of my greatest achievements that helped set the stage for my interest in athletics was the Rectory Athlete-of-the-Week Award. I hold 18 of them and have them tucked away in a box.”

Those 18 Athlete-of-the-Week awards now have good company with this plaque as we proudly add your name to Rectory’s Athletic Wall of Honor. Congratulations, Theron Foley.

eighth-grade leadership luncheon

Rectory held the 8th-Grade Leadership Luncheon on June 1, 2023, the last academic day of the school year.

The entire Class of 2024 and many of their parents, grandparents, and families gathered, along with a solid contingent of Rectory faculty and staff, to celebrate the end of school and look forward to what lay ahead.

Head of School Fred Williams welcomed everyone to the Dining Hall and explained the purpose of the event, which was twofold: to recognize those 8th-grade students moving on to secondary schools next year and to inspire those students, the majority of the class, who planned to return to Rectory for their 9th-grade year. Mr. Williams praised the class for their hard work in the classroom and during activities and commended them for rising to meet the challenges they faced.

Mr. Williams then called up each of the departing 8th-grade students to receive a certificate of 8th-grade completion and an alumni pin. In doing so, Mr. Williams also announced the secondary school each student planned to attend. He then wished all departing students well in their next chapter and invited them all to return home to Rectory whenever they are able.

Mr. Williams then introduced Jamel Torrence ’09 to give the keynote address. Though the message applied to all students, and really everyone in the room, Torrence’s address was focused on leadership and geared toward those students returning to Rectory for their 9th-grade year. Torrence first indicated the importance of learning from individuals one considers leaders. He mentioned the impact Mr. Brad Seaward had on him as a basketball player and person to always try to make others around oneself better. Torrence also remarked on the difficult transition from being a “big fish in the small pond of Rectory” to being a small fish in the bigger pond of secondary school, and he implored all the students in the room to embrace both roles as each provides opportunities for growth and learning. Finally, Torrence described his current position leading the social media marketing team at NBA2K. He is mindful to let each team member find their voice, and he works diligently to support their efforts to learn new skills and also to develop as human beings.

Torrence congratulated the entire Class of 2024 and expressed his hope that they become the leaders everyone at Rectory knows they can be.

leaving the wolf den

Rectory’s Class of 2023 began their end-of-year festivities with the annual Leaving the Wolf Den activity. It was a chance for the soon-to-be graduates to reflect on their time at Rectory and begin to consider what it means to be a Rectory alumnus/a. Leaving the Wolf Den took place in our student center known, appropriately, as the Wolf Den, on May 18, and students were treated to a special take-out lunch for the occasion.

Alumni from years past remember the Wolf Den space as their Dining Hall, and the room was crowded with Rectory students at mealtime again. It created a nice connection to the alumni community that students would be joining a few short weeks later. The Alumni and Development office hosted the event, and John Xeller, Development Services and Operations Manager, welcomed the class and described the purpose of Leaving the Wolf Den. The program included an introduction to Alumni and Development staff and an explanation of ways to keep in touch with Rectory after graduation. Current faculty member Darcey Bastow ’14 shared her experience of Rectory graduation and keeping in touch over the years. One of the best ways to stay connected with Rectory is first to keep in touch with one another.

In order to facilitate connections among their peers, class agents were chosen based on nominations made by faculty and administrators. Class agents agreed to check in with some of their Rectory classmates a few times each year and lead efforts to remain involved with our School however they are able.

Students then had an opportunity to consider their time at Rectory and think intentionally about what they hoped their future might look like. After providing a prompt, students spent around 15 minutes writing letters to their future selves. Upon completing their letter, students sealed it and handed it to Alumni and Development staff for safe-keeping, and the letters will be returned to the students in person or via mail on the occasion of their 10th Rectory reunion in 2033. Knowing their last three weeks on campus were going to be hectic, the students really valued the chance to consider who they are, what they are experiencing, and where they hope the road ahead may lead.

Fall Family Weekend took place in October, and our students’ families appreciated getting an in-depth experience on campus. Parent-Teacher conferences took place on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. This year’s event featured the much-anticipated return of the Prism Concert, a musical showcase of constant sound. The Friday dinner program included a welcome from Fred Williams and the “all-school video” that featured photos and videos of the school year to that point. The gym was full to capacity, and guests were treated to dinner prepared by Rectory’s outstanding Kitchen staff. Saturday featured the usual slate of athletic competitions and demonstrations, and families had an opportunity to observe the newest classroom technology in action on the Academic building tour. Guests were treated to plenty of sunshine, mild temperatures, and a delicious cookout, and the Rectory Parents’ Association provided snacks, games, and inflatables for all the kids in attendance. Campus was buzzing with excitement as it always does on family weekend.

Spring Family Weekend coincided with Alumni Reunion and Young Alumni Day. The mingling of current families and employees with alumni, past faculty, and all campus guests was particularly special. The marquee event of the weekend for families and alumni alike was the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Centennial Hall, Rectory’s newly constructed dorm. Events specific to Spring Family Weekend included: classroom visits, the spring concert, lunch in Colhoun Gymnasium, Elementary School grandparents and special friend day, and Middle School parent-advisor meetings. Guests reported enjoying seeing their students’ teachers in action as they observed classes throughout the day. The spring concert was presented in two sessions–the first featuring primarily students in grades K–6 and the second featuring performers in orchestra, jazz, guitar, RECapella, and the school musical–with both receiving rave reviews from attendees. Campus looked incredible and all events went off without a hitch thanks to Rectory’s wonderful staff, and the excitement on our students’ faces said it all–Spring Family Weekend was an unequivocal success.

Alumni Reunion

Alumni Reunion was a full and festive day on April 22, 2023. The day began with the return of the fun run, led by Rectory’s track team, which traversed Rectory’s scenic roads and fields. Toe Jam Puppet Band provided live music and entertainment, sponsored by the Rectory Parents’ Association. The afternoon featured campus tours, a faculty and student panel, walkthroughs of Centennial Hall, and a chance for young alumni to reconnect with their teachers. The Alumni Reunion Dinner and Awards took place in the Dining Hall in the evening. Fred Williams announced that the space would be dedicated to Mr. George Groom, with an additional dedication to former Rectory cooks John and Odessa Hunsucker, in the fall of 2023. During dinner, Theron Foley ’87 was inducted to Rectory’s Athletic Wall of Honor, and Dan Newman, RN, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for his 40 years of service as Infirmary director. One of his close friends, John Frank ’52, gave an eloquent and heartfelt introduction. Dozens of alumni, Trustees, current and past faculty, and guests of our honorees were in attendance and enjoyed a celebratory evening befitting our distinguished honorees.

sara markes class of 2010

Sara Markes ‘10 is finishing her degree researching mental health and working with seniors and veterans through Meals on Wheels.

Sara was born with cerebral palsy and has spent her life in and out of hospitals, but she never let it hold her back. She has had to overcome countless surgeries and bouts of depression and internal struggles from an early age. Due to her own experiences and overcoming both physical and mental hardships, she found her calling and is dedicating her life to helping others. Sara has always had a passion for learning. She always dove head first into her academics, no matter the subject, wanting to absorb as much knowledge as possible. Yet, no matter how excited she was to learn, Sara constantly found herself bored in the classroom. Even though she was excelling, she was not being challenged enough. She had a mentor and family friend who talked to her parents about moving both Sara and her brother to the nearby private school, where they would be engaged as students: in came Rectory.

In an effort to break out of her shell, Sara joined an afterschool club called Heartstrings and Woodwinds, led by Claudia Ricci. Together, they volunteered at a local senior home, engaging in activities such as singing, playing musical instruments, and spending quality time with the elderly residents. During these moments, Sara discovered the profound fulfillment that volunteering brought to her life.

“I bloomed under the guidance and care of all the teachers. I felt really seen for the first time, especially in my Latin class with Mr. Purvis, where I was pushed to really give my best efforts.”

At Rectory, Sara began to flourish academically.

I felt really seen for the first time, especially in my Latin class with Mr. [Jeff] Purvis, where I was pushed to really give my best efforts.” She looks back very fondly on her time spent in the classroom at Rectory and all that she accomplished in her three years here. She attributes her keen critical thinking skills in part to Tom Army’s history and Lisette Rimer’s English classes, which were infamous for extensive, challenging essays and constant questions, requiring a shift in how you viewed things. Their insistence on asking thought-provoking questions and challenging perspectives left a lasting impact on Sara’s intellectual growth. While the academic curriculum at Rectory proved beneficial, the experiences beyond the classroom shaped Sara into the compassionate individual she is today. Mrs. Rimer, a guiding presence in Sara’s life, provided a safe space for her to open up about her internal struggles. This transformative experience allowed Sara to find her voice.

“My time with Mrs. Rimer and writing for the DiRectory newspaper was a safe haven for me.”

After graduating from Rectory, Sara continued her education at Emma Willard School in upstate New York. Afterward, she ventured to the West Coast, driven by her unwavering desire to understand mental illness better and contribute to a more compassionate world. She pursued further education in Santa Monica, earning a degree in industrial psychology before facing another major hip and leg surgery that left her bedridden for nearly a year. During this challenging period, Sara experienced a true turning point in her life.

Her fighting spirit did not just stop with her physical accomplishments but her mental health, as well. During COVID, Sara faced further struggles and setbacks in her health, but instead of sitting in a state of isolation, she remembered the sense of community she felt while volunteering at Rectory. She continued her work with Meals on Wheels, ensuring that the veterans and seniors she served knew they were not alone.

“The human connection is what pulled me out of my dark place,” Sara stated. During COVID, Sara earned a certification in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which she uses both in her undergraduate research and with her clients at Meals on Wheels.

Sara had always had an interest in the United States military, thanks to her veteran grandfathers; since she was ineligible to serve, she found an alternative path—one where she could profoundly impact veterans’ mental health struggles. Sara’s ultimate goal is to utilize her research and expertise in military psychology to revolutionize the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and better prepare soldiers for the mental effects of active duty before and after deployment. Through her research and dedication, Sara aims to reshape how PTSD is understood and treated, offering hope for a brighter future for those who have served their country.

After Sara graduates, she envisions returning to the East Coast to continue her research and embark on new endeavors. Her heartfelt ambition includes returning to the Rectory campus, where her transformative journey began. Sara yearns to give back to the community that set her on her path, sharing her knowledge, experiences, and compassion with the next generation of Rectory students.

Reflecting on her time at Rectory, Sara emphasizes the invaluable lessons she learned—how to love learning, critical thinking, and the profound importance of community and compassion. These foundational values continue to shape her outlook, driving her to create positive change in the world.

As we look ahead, we eagerly anticipate witnessing the impact of Sara Markes’ remarkable work unfold. Her resilience, dedication, and unwavering determination serve as an inspiration to us all.

With each step she takes, Sara exemplifies the extraordinary power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and make a lasting difference in the lives of others. Rectory School is honored to call Sara Markes one of our own, and we are immensely proud of her journey and the promising future ahead because of her unwavering commitment to creating a better world.

dear friends, Another year has concluded at Rectory, and with it comes a sense of deep satisfaction as we graduate a class of impressive young men and women. Like those before them, these graduates are defined by the poise, confidence, commitment, and resolve fostered across their Rectory years. Evidenced by the range of topics they pursued as part of the Grade-9 Capstone project, and as witnessed by their leadership efforts across campus, these students are embarking on lives of promise and purpose as they commit to becoming their best selves and improving the experiences of others in the process. This is no accident.

Rectory is fortunate to have assembled a group of teachers and administrators who have dedicated their lives to the well-being of the students with whom they work. These individuals give generously of their time and their talent to fulfill Rectory’s promise to build a foundation of core academic skills, create powerful learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom, and foster strong ethical and social values in our students.

With your help, our teachers have been incredibly successful in this effort.

The strength of our academic program, rich in resources provided by your generosity, allowed two Rectory students—for the first time ever—to take AP exams in computer science (they both received 5s) while other students mastered the art of video production as they took our Wolfie Sports Report from concept to completion. Other students traveled the continent on MELP (May Experiential Learning Program) adventures while, closer to home, those more artistically inclined designed the set for or starred on stage in our hit spring musical Newsies, Jr. Suffice to say, there is something for everyone at Rectory; your support makes this possible.

This year, thanks to the generosity of our community, we had three ribbon cuttings: the new girls’ locker room, Centennial Dormitory, and a completely renovated Fisher House, which was converted from a dormitory to faculty housing. With those projects completed, we have broken ground on the Brewster Odeum, begun renovations of Murphy House, and commenced improvements to the Dining Hall, soon to be named in honor of former faculty member George Groom. None of this would have occurred without you.

Driven by the continued engagement of our community, Rectory continues to make impressive progress on three critical fronts: people, program, and place. Our compensation and benefits have never been more competitive, our program never more enriching, and our facilities never more suitable to providing the exceptional experience our students deserve.

Throughout the ten weeks of research, I am sampling macroinvertebrates from the neighboring Mill River and identifying them in the lab in order to assess the water quality. It is really meaningful to be a part of a project dedicated to better understanding our impact on the environment as a community since 2015.”
