Dear Friends, It is a great time to be a part of Rectory School. Having just completed another extremely successful year—our best yet in some ways—and with so many exciting initiatives connected with our strategic plan underway or in the planning process, Rectory’s forward momentum is strong and focused. With a CAIS (Connecticut Association of Independent Schools) ReAccreditation visit this spring and a Centennial Celebration on the horizon for the spring of 2021, Rectory is spending abundant time reflecting on our past, while planning for a new century of educational excellence. All connected with Rectory, particularly those listed in this Report of Giving, deserve credit for this success. Academically, Rectory’s teachers continue to deepen their understanding of the maturing brain and the most effective instructional practices associated with this development. Through full day on-campus workshops led by experts in the field such as Kathleen Kryza and off site conferences hosted by Learning and the Brain, our teachers are developing curricula that engage, educate, and excite our young learners while preparing them for lives of promise. This work is reflected in the overhaul of our history curriculum as we introduce a more cohesive, relevant look at our world and its peoples; a thorough revision of our language skills program, as we seek to develop even more articulate speakers and writers, along with contemplative readers; the introduction of a robust computer science program that provides our students an incredible foundation for future study; and a re-introduction of woodshop class—with a modern twist—recognizing that hands-on academic experiences are invaluable. This is all just to mention a few examples. On the facilities front, our campus is in high-energy mode as we continue to improve our beautiful environs. This work includes a thorough renovation of the John B. Bigelow Academic Building constructed in 1982. It is most fitting that this academic hub, named in honor of our founder’s son and our school’s second headmaster, be the first space to benefit from our Centennial Celebration fundraising effort. Financially, Rectory’s endowment is closing in on $20,000,000 with recent growth mostly attributed to the completion of the Tang Challenge and the Tang Family Endowment for Excellence in Teaching, which is allowing the School to make transformative changes to our faculty salaries and benefits as we seek to attract and retain the best educators. All this work would not be possible without the generous involvement of our community. This year Rectory received support from the largest number of donors ever—814—resulting in the highest ever annual fund total which, for the first time in Rectory’s history, crested the $1,000,000 mark. These donors also contributed over $2,800,000 to capital and endowment projects, resulting in total philanthropic revenue of just under $4,000,000. These are phenomenal numbers for Rectory and have allowed us to do exceptional things while planning for continued progress on all fronts in the years ahead. Thank you for supporting Rectory! With our Centennial approaching, Rectory enters a new phase of capital improvement efforts. The first project, which began this past summer, involves a thorough renovation of the John B. Bigelow Academic Center. This includes new energy-efficient windows, new lighting, new ceilings and flooring, and new wall treatments that all combine to create the optimal classroom environment intended to enhance the learning experience. These improvements spill out into the hallways as we bring in natural light, re-do flooring, and improve the overall impact of these spaces. 4 | 2018–2019 REPORT OF GIVING

The Brad Seaward Scholarship, given in honor of Rectory’s beloved teacher, coach, and administrator, is awarded to a boarding applicant for Grade 7 or above who presents potential in all the areas Mr. Seaward excelled: as an athlete, a mentor, and as one who seeks to improve the lives of others on a daily basis. The endowed scholarship follows a student across his/her Rectory years so that only one Seaward Scholar exists at any given time.

I was held to a higher standard than ever before, which was monumental in preparing me for the road ahead. People like Ms. Morano, Mr. Healy and the Ames’ taught me responsibility, hard work, and most importantly, accountability. There’s no better place to go to school and I’m grateful everyday for the relationships, memories, and personal growth. Jackson Larrabee ’11 WHY I GIVE: “I give back to Rectory as a way to pay forward to the next generation of students. As my undergraduate education concluded, I thought back to how far I’ve come and realized the impact Rectory faculty, teachers, coaches, and community had on me. The small and tight community as a whole helped to give me a grasp of the giant and wonderful world we live in, all from a small Connecticut town. Rectory toned and influenced my leadership skills, my desire for travel, everlasting drive, and love of education. I loved the people—my fellow students from around the world and the connections I created with faculty, many who are still working at Rectory. GRADE 4 TEACHER, P’17, P’19, P’21 “Enriching, supporting, and engaging each child who passes through Rectory’s doors is my job as an educator. This past year grades 2-5 participated in the Global Read Aloud, a worldwide initiative that brings together classrooms all over the world to read grade-level novels and discuss the deeper meaning of the text through different perspectives and mediums. The 2nd–4th grades corresponded through written letters, using targeted comprehension strategies, with 3 different classrooms, while the 5th graders used technology to achieve the same goals.”

MELP res Adventu 2019!
MELP (March Experiential Learning Program) is one of Rectory’s signature programs. Occurring during the first week of the spring trimester, students eagerly anticipate their MELP assignments due to the high-interest offerings that allow students to explore topics in depth through authentic, hands-on experiences. The program encourages alternative learning styles, creativity, and problem solving while offering new experiences students will remember for a lifetime. Each MELP also includes a community service activity. A few of the offerings this year included white water rafting in Arizona, volunteering at a charter school in Philadelphia, exploring Nashville, “America’s Music City,” learning about the Everglades in Key Largo, and discovering the wonders of the ocean in Anaheim.
