Dear Friends, Starting a new school year is an important marker in every child’s life. It is a time filled with hope and optimism as students along with parents and faculty look to the opportunities the year ahead holds. As an institution that believes the route to excellence is constant review, reflection, and refinement, the start of school year provides an opportunity to build on our past successes as we strive for new goals ahead. I am once again humbled by you, our generous community of parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and friends for coming together to make our 2017–2018 year a successful one.

Along with the introduction of new sports and academic offerings to further enrich the Rectory experience for our students, we celebrated the start of the year with the opening of Rectory’s new student center, The Wolf Den. While the students were working hard in the classroom and enjoying their new social space, our teachers furthered their knowledge through professional development supported by your generosity. Finally, upon graduation and with their Rectory careers completed, the members of Rectory’s Class of 2018 supported by all they learned here are now heading off to 32 secondary schools across the United States and world to achieve great things.

This year we reached our highest fundraising total ever for The Annual Fund for Rectory. An effort made possible by increased participation from our alumni and parent communities that resulted in 692 donors spanning 42 states and 11 countries. Rectory’s endowment continues to grow thanks to the completion of The Tang Challenge for Excellence in Teaching and the introduction of The Brad Seaward Scholarship Fund, a scholarship created to honor Mr. Seaward’s legacy. We are humbled to end the 2017–2018 year with a collective total of $2,577,426 in donations from you. Thank you for your continued belief in Rectory and its faculty and students. Your generosity is felt by all on campus each and every day.

Opened in the fall of 2017, the Wolf Den now serves as a central hub for students on campus. The new student lounge sits in what was once Rectory’s old dining hall.

The Wolf Den has served many purposes in its first year on campus—the site of several competitive ping pong matches; an ideal location for evening and weekend activities; and a great place to watch the Superbowl or Royal Wedding.

The Tang Family Endowment for Excellence in Teaching Established in 2015 by Oscar ’53 and Kevin ’82 Tang, The Tang Family Endowment will be used to recognize faculty excellence in the classroom and enhance faculty recruitment and retention by improving teacher salaries and retirement benefits.

Alysia LaBonte-Campbell “One goal I have for my students is for them to express their ideas in an articulate way. While English classes tend to focus on harnessing our students’ abilities to craft cohesive written arguments, being able to verbalize those ideas in front of others is equally important. For my students, public speaking is not just about giving planned and prepared speeches, but also about learning to express one’s opinions clearly and confidently.

Each student arrives to my class with different strengths. Some are phenomenal creative writers, others avid readers, while others can spot a grammatical error a mile away. Collaborative groups are set up to facilitate growth in each student. Every member of the group learns how to share their strengths, build upon the necessary areas of growth, and work as a valued team member.”

Mrs. LaBonte-Campbell’s commitment to high value learning and a student-centered classroom environment fosters innovation and inspires confidence among her students.

On January 15 we reached our goal of raising $2.5 million by 186 donors toward The Tang Challenge for Excellence in Teaching. We will now receive the $2.5 million match by the Tang Family and in total have over $7.5 million in the Tang Family Endowment for Excellence in Teaching.

These funds will provide both an immediate and sustained impact on faculty benefits and salaries. We will now be better able to attract and retain the best educators as well as provide a salary that more fairly rewards the faculty for their dedication and excellence.

The Brad Seaward Scholarship Fund The Brad Seaward Scholarship, given in honor of Rectory’s beloved teacher, coach, and administrator, is awarded to a boarding applicant for Grade 7 or above who presents potential in all the areas Mr. Seaward excelled: as an athlete, a mentor, and as one who seeks to improve the lives of others on a daily basis. The endowed scholarship follows a student across his/her Rectory years so that only one Seaward Scholar exists at any given time.

Honoring faculty with a gift Mr. “Chip” Williamson teaches a class in the Main House, circa 1960. While the Main House is no longer in use for classrooms, it is still very much a part of the school and houses the Admissions office, the Headmaster’s office, and administrative offices.

More important, though, was the foundation and bedrock of values embodied and promoted by the faculty and administration,

which has helped me stand strong and keep moving forward through a life of great joys, anxious hardships, great victories, deep disappointments, joyful unions, and shocking, bitter betrayals. In short, a normal life! but one met with a faith in the power of virtue and hard work to overcome real world difficulties.

It was Mr. Seaward with his unshakeable optimism, laconic New England wit, and what felt like a very particular interest and belief in me (the degree of his specialness is evidenced by the way he makes everyone feel they are similarly special). It was Mr. Williamson, literally and figuratively an intellectual giant to a 13-year-old, showing me how much insight was possible with the power of a rational mind. It was Mr. Muther, my hockey coach,

just a kid himself as I would view him now, exhorting us to and past the limits of the possible both athletically and as teammates working together.

I miss the green fields, the carpets of leaves on the cross country course in September, the winter classrooms with the cranky, boiling hot radiators, the Mississippi mud pudding at lunch, and, as time goes by, I more and more think back to Mr. Green’s assembly lectures. I recall he said once you can tell a man’s life in his face: I'd like to think that all these years later my visage is open and clear and looks up in hope, in no small part thanks to his efforts and those of all the great people I knew at Rectory. I want this tradition to continue, and am happy to help pass it on.”

MELP creates unique experiences that encourage alternative learning styles, creativity, and problem solving for today’s Rectory students. This year, students were able to participate in one of 17 different MELP activities including: working with elementary school students at a charter school in Philadelphia; exploring the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida; and learning about local plant and animal life in Jekyll Island, Georgia. This was also the first year for MELP Jr., an on-campus program for our elementary school students!
