We have had much to celebrate on the Rectory School campus this past year: we opened the doors of John and Millie Green Hall, which houses the Hale Elementary School Wing and the Henry B. Smith ’76 Learning Center; we introduced a competitive swimming program; we launched a new enrichment series that brings outside learning opportunities on campus, and, most importantly; we graduated another impressive class of ninth graders who are off to make their marks on the world. Everything we are able to do at Rectory is impacted by the generous philanthropy of hundreds of parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, trustees, and friends. We are, yet again, humbled by the support of this special community. This year marked our second highest fundraising effort on record for the Annual Fund for Rectory, success that was made possible because of the involvement of 670 donors. This number reflects support from 90% of our current families, 100% of our faculty, 100% of our Board of Trustees members, and abundant gifts from our loyal alumni ranging from class years of 1930 to 2016. Thank you all for ensuring our students and teachers have the resources they need to succeed. With the close of our fiscal year we find ourselves one year closer to achieving a historic challenge, The Tang Challenge for Excellence in Teaching, a challenge made possible by the generosity of Oscar Tang ’53 and his son, Kevin Tang ’82. We have already received over $1.5 million from 167 donors, and look forward to continued progress on this most important cause. Once this challenge is met, we will be better able to attract and retain exceptional educators by providing a salary that more appropriately recognizes our teachers’ dedication and excellence. People are the most important component of a child’s Rectory experience, and this transformational opportunity is all about our legendary Rectory faculty. Roughly 200 of you came together in cities across the country and world—Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Seoul, Shanghai, and Tokyo—for the opportunity to connect with Rectory friends, old and new. From reminiscing with alumni over an old yearbook photo to visiting with a first year family—it’s been a pleasure to meet with so many of you. With the generous support and involvement of you, our alumni, parents, trustees, faculty, staff, and friends, Rectory is enjoying great success in the present, while looking boldly to the future. With this gift to our endowment Rectory will be better able to attract and retain the best educators as well as provide a salary that more fairly rewards the faculty for their dedication and excellence. The Tang Challenge for Excellence in Teaching was launched in 2015 by Oscar Tang ’53 and his son, Kevin Tang ’82, and our community has responded generously. The Tangs made a gift of $2.5 million outright and, in an effort to inspire an even more impactful fund-raising effort, the Tangs are offering a challenge; all gifts made by June 2018 will be matched 1:1 up to an additional $2.5 million. Thanks to the support of 167 alumni, parents, and friends, Rectory has already raised an impressive $1.5 million towards our goal of $2.5 million. With a successful outcome of this challenge, Rectory will receive $7.5 million, a transformative gift for our School that will help Rectory attract and retain the best educators, and provide a salary that more fairly rewards our faculty for their dedication and excellence.

Dedicated in 2016, the Seaward Family Pavilion has become a popular place for gathering. During the school day, you will find students playing four square and basketball during their break periods. The Pavilion is also a favorite location for Rectory faculty and families to gather during after school events, like our family orientation on this September late afternoon.
