One hundred years ago, Father Frank and Mrs. Mabel Bigelow founded Rectory School with an enrollment of two students: their son John and family friend George Holt. As we remember our roots while celebrating Rectory’s Centennial, we remain committed to the Bigelows’ vision for Rectory as we pursue our “even greater future.” Rectory’s priorities in this Centennial Campaign—endowed scholarship funds, a new dormitory, renovations to the Bigelow Academic Building, and improved athletics spaces—reveal how much Rectory has evolved since its founding. However, the heart of Rectory—the transformative student growth fostered by talented and caring educators—remains unchanged. We hear regularly of the lifelong impact a Rectory School experience has on our students. Our Achievements As we reflect on the generosity of our many donors, we are humbled to know that so many chose Rectory as the recipient of their philanthropy. Rectory’s generous donors enabled us to achieve amazing milestones. The transformative impact of our donors is evident in numerous ways: • The new Grosvenor House front entrance and expanded Admissions Office provide a welcoming first impression for families and visitors. • The complete renovation of Memorial Dormitory brings a modern feel to this iconic student living space, and the addition of a familysized apartment increases faculty housing, benefiting the residential life program. • The construction of John and Millie Green Hall, housing the Smith Learning Center and the Hale Elementary School Wing, allows students to thrive in a holistic, 21st century learning environment. • The enhancement of faculty salaries afforded by the $7.9 million raised during the Tang Challenge for Excellence in Teaching and the $1 million raised for the Faculty First Fund improve Rectory’s ability to recruit and retain the highest quality candidates for teaching positions. • The Whipple Brewster Tennis Pavilion now offers first-class facilities for one of the most popular sports on campus. • The construction of a faculty duplex, including one threeand one four-bedroom home, provides much needed on-campus, non-dormitory housing. • The Seaward Family Pavilion and Wang Amphitheater create a central hub for students interested in a game of basketball, four square, or just a space to relax with friends. • The Wolf Den Student Center converts the old dining hall into an invaluable informal space for students to gather for work and play.

Rectory’s Next Century Guided by our mission to provide students with an “enriched and supportive community,” the vision of Rectory’s Campaign for a Century is to build, enhance, and grow the school’s physical and financial resources. These improvements will serve to benefit students now and long into the future. Dormitory Construction In response to the growing number of boarding students, Rectory’s new dormitory, situated where the former Cedars Dormitory stood, will house 24 students in a beautiful natural setting across from Colhoun Gymnasium. This centralized location will help strengthen our community and increase student safety by moving most residential students onto the main campus from across Pomfret Street. Additionally, the off-campus houses that had been modified to serve as dormitories can now be returned to service as much-needed housing for faculty. Life on dorm often provides some of the most memorable Rectory moments for our students. This functional, comfortable, spaciously designed “home” will assure those memories are positive ones as students enjoy an exceptional residential life experience. The floor plan’s central entrance leads to inviting communal areas—an interior lounge, an exterior deck space overlooking the playing fields, and a covered front porch. Contemporary student living areas include spacious rooms and bathroom facilities. In addition, four apartments for dormitory parents will increase the number of faculty housed on campus.

Craig Scott Colhoun Gymnasium: Renovation & Expansion Athletics have always been central to a Rectory School education, and the Colhoun Gymnasium has served the school incredibly well for over thirty years. But as our sports program has expanded significantly, our athletics facilities have remained unchanged. In furthering our commitment to athletics and to address the needs of today’s expanded and co-educational student population, Rectory now offers twenty-three different sports. Facilities limitations are particularly evident in the winter where four sports compete off campus, and basketball practices, due to the many teams, extend beyond dinner into evening study hall hours. To address the needs of today’s athletes and to maintain our commitment to athletics, this facility must be upgraded and expanded. Regardless of the decade, Rectory students have cherished their time competing in athletics, learning invaluable life lessons along the way. Visits with alumni evoke names of legendary coaches such as General Smith, Washburn, Long, Dagle, Groom, Jackman, Seaward, and Barber among others. 1

Gifts to the Campaign for a Century will help current and future Rectory students enjoy learning spaces that fully complement the standard set by the extraordinary faculty with whom they interact each day. 16
John B. Bigelow Academic Building Renovations The majority of a Rectory student’s day takes place in the John B. Bigelow Academic Building. We are committed to creating an environment for students that is conducive to learning and consistent with best practices. Students learn best when they are engaged in the process, and we can promote engagement by making our classroom spaces brighter, more open, and equipped with the technology and resources that encourage academic growth. Renovations to the academic building will: • Increase natural light and control sound in learning spaces and hallways. • Provide climate control through upgraded windows. • Create new office for the Director of Academics immediately adjacent to teachers and their classrooms. • Maximize student learning through access to technology and resources.
In 1983, Rectory unveiled its “new” building, the John B. Bigelow Academic Building, creating a dedicated learning space that featured science labs, lockers, and a new lower campus entrance. In its Centennial year, Rectory continues its commitment to preparing students by updating and transforming the Bigelow Academic Building, ensuring that our classrooms will continue to be places where creativity and industriousness thrive.

A Legacy of Excellence Brad Seaward Scholarship Fund
When Brad Seaward arrived at Rectory, fresh out of college, he intended to stay one year. Forty-three years later he retired as one of the most beloved individuals in the history of our school. Mr. Seaward knew and respected every student, regardless of interests, abilities, or background. And they all loved and respected him—for good reason. The Brad Seaward Scholarship Fund was created to honor the legacy that was—and will forever be—“Mr. Sea.” With your help in growing this fund to $1,000,000, the Seaward Scholarship will allow a young person, regardless of means but rich in potential, to attend Rectory School. In doing so, the Seaward name will live on forever in the gymnasium, on the baseball diamond, in the classroom, and around the dining room table where so many reveled in the company of a great man.
