Innovation and Evolution at The Rectory School

Santa made a visit to Brittain House this year; in fact, he does every year as part of a holiday party for faculty and staff children. With him he brings a bag of books, and to my good fortune I made the “nice” list and was rewarded with Tony Wagner’s hot off the presses new release, Most Likely to Succeed: Preparing our Students for the Innovation Era. Wagner, an internationally known author and the current Expert in Residence at Harvard University’s Innovation Lab, has been promoting the importance of innovation in schools for years, and as one can tell from this edition of The Rectory News, we are in lock step with Mr. Wagner. But it is not just Tony Wagner who is commenting on innovation.

A few years ago, Sean Belka, P ’14, Director of Fidelity’s Center for Applied Technology, spoke about innovation at a Rectory event. (Sean had previously hosted the Senior Administrative Team on site in Boston to explore this same topic.)

In his presentation, he emphasized the importance of innovation in the business world by sharing statistics on the turnover rate for Fortune 500 companies.

When comparing the current list with that of 60 years ago, only 60 companies appear on both lists, and 440 (88%) are new. Similarly, as Mark Perry points out, “life expectancy of a firm in the Fortune 500 was around 75 years. Today, it’s less than 15 years and declining all the time.”* The rapid pace of change is also present in the world of education.

THE RECTORY SCHOOL The era of recycling the standard classroom experience for another generation of students is over, and schools like Rectory are closely examining what we need to do to be most productive and effective.

This includes looking at the science of learning—what does research tells us about learning and the brain? From this information, we then need to consider and adjust as necessary our instructional practices based on these findings. To this end, Rectory has established an ongoing relationship with Dr. Sarah Armstrong, Director of the Master of Arts in Education Program, Eastern Mennonite University and President of the Neuro-Education Consultants, who continues to work with our teachers on researched-based best practices in the classroom.

Additionally, schools including Rectory are discussing the evolving purpose of education, a dialogue that includes a thoughtful consideration of the emerging skills and understandings our students need to be successful in their future schooling and career choices. The words buzzing across the education blogs and the Rectory campus include creativity, collaboration, communication skills, maker labs, design thinking… This is a period of great excitement, and great change, one that is best captured by the various forms of the adage, “If you are not moving forward, you are moving backward.” Rectory is moving forward.

The following pages tell but a portion of the story as to how Rectory is responding to this era of change and innovation. Some of this story includes our new schedule featuring longer class periods to promote deeper learning, an added elective block for students to pursue areas of interest outside the traditional curriculum, and a new skills block that utilizes online technology to reinforce math, reading, and writing skills (the three Rs remain alive in our era of change). These program items are in addition to initiatives such as a new teacher professional growth and observation model, a recently adopted compensation model unique among schools, and a new technology integration model across grades K-9, all of which have been presented in previous Rectory News articles.

Innovation and evolution are active on our Rectory campus, but to reference another wise adage, change for change’s sake is not a prudent move. Rectory’s current initiatives are implemented only after careful review and, as our school approaches its centennial, we always need to maintain that which makes Rectory so special. This means that while a visitor’s experience onto campus today starts at a renovated front circle and new admissions entrance where a digital sign board offers a greeting, the true essence of Rectory is displayed one room further along. Here adorning a wall in the Grosvenor House parlor is a photo collage with images spanning Rectory’s decades.

Accompanying and uniting the images is a phrase that was as true in 1920 as it is today, just as it will be 100 years hence: “Rectory is relationships…”

The world of education is experiencing unprecedented change, a statement evident at Rectory and across any other forward thinking school campus. Yet while Rectory innovates, we do so well aware of our mission and ever cognizant of the role relationships play in the lives of our community.

Learning @ Rectory From the Teacher’s Perspective: The New Middle School Academic Schedule

By Jamie Haines and Alysia LaBonte-Campbell BEHIND THE SCENES: Planning The New Schedule – Jamie Haines Rectory’s educational focus is centered on 21st-century teaching and learning. This is a shift from a focus on the memorization of facts to teaching the skills necessary for students to be productive citizens in an increasingly global and complex economy. Rectory’s teachers are committed to teaching our students the four Cs vital to 21st-century readiness: collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking. These skills have become the cornerstone of our academic mission. As a result, we recognized that our academic schedule needed to support our 21st-century initiatives.

Therefore, we have created an academic schedule that meets the needs of an increasingly sophisticated, rigorous, and dynamic curriculum.

In late June 2014, Director of The Middle School Glenn Ames and I attended Scheduling Without Conflict, an Independent School Management (ISM) week-long conference. ISM, an educational consulting organization committed to independent schools, has been in business for more than 40 years. While at the conference, we explored the characteristics of an academic schedule necessary for effective teaching and learning within a 21st-century paradigm. ISM states that a schedule must deal with four dimensions: time, space, people, and mission. Recognizing that we live in a three-dimensional world, the challenge in creating a new schedule meant recognizing that any schedule demands compromise.

ISM’s research-based perspectives support a schedule that is student-centered. This translates into the following key characteristics integrated into our new schedule: 1. Longer classes where students are able to explore and reflect on process, not content alone.

2. Rotating academic class periods to ensure that every student is able to perform at their best time of day in each of their classes.

3. Having a break to ensure healthy students and allow for an appropriate interval of social time with their peers.

4. Furthering academic and emotional support for each student by adding more advisor time and creating an enrichment period for students to meet with tutors and teachers.

5. Creating electives and skill blocks to expand opportunities for students to explore what interests them and improve on weaknesses.

Middle School Elective Program

art of Rectory’s new academic schedule includes our electives program. In this program, we encourage our students to explore their non-academic interests and passions twice a week in one-hour blocks. Our elective program gives our students an exploratory experience in a variety of disciplines. Teachers create offerings based on their interests. Prior to each trimester, teachers present their ideas to our student body. Following these presentations, students vote, selecting their top three choices.

Students earn a grade (S-, S, S+) for their performance in their elective. Teachers also complete a short checklist at the close of the term that provides parents with insight into their student’s elective performance. Some of our offerings include Minecraft EDU, History’s Mysteries, Book Ends, Stained Glass, Mad Scientist’s Club, and Introduction to iMovie. One of our more popular offerings this fall was Robotics, led by Matt Winkler and Ryan Finnegan. (See article on page 9.)

Middle School Skill Blocks

T

his year, The Rectory School implemented three skill-based online programs for reading comprehension, mathematics, and grammar. Students are assigned to a Skill Block based on their need to increase competency in a given subject area. In both ReadNaturally and Assessment and Learning and Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS), students take preliminary assessments to establish their baselines. Lessons target demonstrated areas of weakness, and reassessments are ongoing to measure progress until mastery is reached. NoRedInk provides instruction and exercises in grammar.

For ReadNaturally, students learn new vocabulary words, review definitions, and practice usage. This program utilizes an individual approach to word recognition, fluency, and comprehension. Students use an audio program and read along with a story until they reach their targeted words per minute. In addition, they answer questions and write summaries to demonstrate their understanding of the material.

ALEKS provides a pie chart to illustrate content areas in mathematics that the student must practice to gain proficiency at his or her designated level. Students can access explanations to clarify any errors as they work through problems. With progress, each one’s self-confidence increases.

NoRedInk is a grammar program with two approaches. Teachers may either assign a student to a specific area, such as plurals, possessives, or punctuation, or a student may choose a topic he or she needs to practice. Students enjoy working with the NoRedInk program because it allows them to select material using their favorite sports figures, movie stars or musicians.

Grammar lessons are constructed using material built around these individuals.

In each of the three courses, faculty support students by explaining, reviewing, clarifying concepts, and answering student-generated questions. Currently, students are assigned to one of these three programs, meeting one block per week. We continue to explore ways to maximize the benefits.

As faculty and staff returned to Rectory’s campus this September, many wondered how the new schedule would impact the daily routine of the school. The exclusion of overhead bells, 60-minute classes, and the rotating schedule marked a whole new terrain, and many wondered if the students and faculty alike would be able to handle the changes. Would we, as teachers, be able to cover all the content we had in previous years? Would students remember the material despite not meeting every day? Despite this uneasiness and hesitancy, as Rectory’s first classes under the new schedule began, it was clear these changes would make imparting 21st-century skills a more attainable goal.

THE RECTORY SCHOOL longer, more concentrated time within each class period has transformed the post-class commute. A once boisterous and crowded hallway remains lively with greetings between teachers and students, yet it is now calmer and feels more efficient. As a result, students arrive unwaveringly on time to class, ready to engage in the day’s lesson.

IN PRACTICE: Benefits of The New Schedule – Alysia LaBonte-Campbell As a sixth-year faculty member and English teacher for seventhand ninth-graders, I shared a similar uncertainty as I began the 2015-16 academic year. The first day without bells was unfamiliar, and my color-coded copy of my schedule became lovingly referred to as my bible. However, as students scurried through my classroom door, I saw the possibilities this extended time with each one of them afforded. Dynamic conversations about the previous night’s reading would no longer be interrupted by the impending bell, students who desired extra help would be guaranteed a builtin time to meet, and classroom activities would be enhanced with the gift of time.

Lessons have undergone a similar transformation. The 60-minute period provides time for me to consistently use an opening activity to engage and redirect my students’ attention to our English class. The extended time has allowed me to forego the dilemma of choosing between properly engaging my students at the start of class or accomplishing the day’s agenda. I, and my students, have been able to reap the rewards of added time: • Time to provide clarification regarding the previous night’s reading at the start of class.

• Time for students to work in collaborative groups to decipher the author’s tone in our novel or analyze the main character’s motivation in our short story.

• Time to truly, and meaningfully, engage each student in the process of reflecting upon what they are learning so that it sticks, so that it lingers even beyond the days in which they do not meet for my class.

The decision to change Rectory’s academic schedule was one made with the understanding of, and best intentions for, the students.

As one faculty member who was admittedly apprehensive about how the changes would play out, I am pleased to witness the positive changes it has made on our goals as 21st-century educators and students. We have prioritized the student, and therefore have prioritized each student leaving our classrooms and our community ready to engage in a lifetime of learning and exploring.

It took only a matter of days to notice the benefits of the new schedule. Energy throughout the academic building has shifted; the atmosphere has become less hectic. Both the lack of bells and

R

ectory is dedicating time for our faculty to prepare their classrooms to best meet and embrace the needs of a 21st-century classroom. Faculty have always looked for time to collaborate with each other, to reflect, and to share different approaches to teaching and learning. Now it is more important than ever to ensure our faculty have the time to build a strong learning community. In support of, and to continue to nurture, a growth-focused faculty culture, Rectory has now dedicated time each week for our faculty to participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLC). PLC is a time where our faculty share teaching practices and ideas and collaborate on cross-curricular projects to create a learning experience which engages and challenges our Rectory students. Goals may be accomplished in one meeting or may stretch over multiple meetings. As our faculty share ideas and resources across our community, a wide breadth of support is made available as Rectory looks at innovative approaches to helping our students learn.

Rectory ROBOTIC Wolves Matthew Winkler, Robotics Team Leader

This year, Rectory launched a Robotics program as part of the elective course offerings. As part of the course, students participated in the FIRST Lego League to compete against other robotics teams in Connecticut.

The fall Robotics elective has opened the door to exciting STEM opportunities.

S

egway PT inventor Dean Kamen founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) 25 years ago to excite kids about science and technology, and the FIRST Lego League certainly fulfills that mission. Each year, a fresh set of thematicallylinked real-world problems and robotics challenges are delivered to 20,000 teams worldwide, and students start researching solutions and programing their individually-designed robots. The theme for 2015 was Trash Trek. For example, robots could earn points by moving around the Lego game field to collect methane from a landfill and bring it to a power station, and students researched these topics.

The Robotics elective allowed Rectory to join the FIRST Lego League (FLL) and compete in November with the hope of advancing to the state championships in December. Tech-savvy English teachers Ryan Finnegan and Matthew Winkler coached 14 boys and girls from grades 6-9 in the finer points of design thinking, robotic programming, strategic research, and problem solving.

FLL rules allow only 10 students per team, so the class was split into two teams: the Bionic Wolves and the Robotic Wolves.

Both teams spent half of each period learning about trash-related problems and brainstorming innovative solutions, and the other half testing and refining their robot. On November 21, they were

ready to present their innovative trash solutions, and their robots were ready for competition.

The all-day tournament at Tolland High School brought out the best in both teams. Both rookie Rectory robots performed well on the game field, ending the day in eighth and tenth place–in the top half of the 23 teams at this competition! The Bionic Wolves presented their idea of a plastic shopping bag that dissolves in seawater, and the Robotic Wolves pitched their proposal to build more community composting facilities. Both teams also assembled two Lego cars–with their dominant hands tied behind their backs!

The judges timed them and noted their excellent teamwork during this challenge. At the end of a long day, seven of the 23 teams advanced to the state level–with no Wolves among them. This year.

The popularity of the Robotics elective and the success of the founding teams point to exciting possibilities for the future.

Students mastered intricate computer programming, attacked realworld problems, and collaborated as a team. They will return next fall as FLL veterans to lead Rectory’s charge to the state robotics championships.

ES explores

SHARED CONFERENCES to celebrate student learning!

Engaging students in their learning is the cornerstone that guides our work in the elementary community, and we are excited to expand opportunities for students to take responsibility for their own learning. To help our students grow, we must teach them to develop the skill of metacognition—to become aware of their own thought processes. By teaching our students to know themselves well, including giving them an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, they will be better prepared to explore the 21st-century world. This spring, we are adding a new component to our parent conference format in the elementary division by introducing shared conferences. During shared conferences, parents and teachers will be invited to participate in a conference led by the children in grades K-4.

T

o prepare our students for this responsibility in leadership, teachers have spent time reflecting on how we can use our student portfolios to support this process, and agreeing on a definition. Our portfolios are a systematic collection of student work and reflections that paint a picture of the whole child. This collection of work should illustrate growth, significant accomplishments, and a student’s range of abilities. Currently, all the children have their own binder portfolios, where they collect and reflect on their best work. When our teachers gathered to discuss what would work best for our students, we agreed that the binders limited the opportuni10 RECTORY ANNUAL REPORT

ties to collect work of different sizes, so we are going to try hanging file boxes instead. Each Friday, students spend time looking at their work and selecting pieces to enter in a variety of portfolio categories. Our portfolio categories will include student goals, selfportraits, reflections in science, math, language arts, related arts, a letter to next year’s teacher, and a comment page. When each selection is entered, it is accompanied by a reflection focusing on what the student has learned in a variety of content areas. This is a skill that needs to be taught, and teachers will model how to write this reflection throughout the winter and spring terms.

During the month of December, elementary parents were invited to collaborate with teachers by setting goals for their children for the current academic year. Parents were given a goals worksheet, which included a menu of possible goals, and were then asked to think about which three were most appropriate for their child. The three goals could fall into a combination of categories: SOCIAL—behavior in class, relationships with peers, roles in their group, sense of social responsibility; ACADEMIC—learning in specific subject areas, basic facts, becoming a self-directed learner, willingness to take risks and make mistakes; and ORGANIZATIONAL—using time effectively, turning homework in on time, completing assignments, and organizing materials.

When our students returned from their holiday break, elementary teachers had a conference with each student, shared the goals that the student’s parents have selected for him or her, and created an understanding for three individual goals that each child will own to become a successful learner. Charlotte Danielson, whose framework we use to model professionalism in teaching, says that “when students collect samples of their own work together in one place and show them to their parents, they are taking increased ownership and pride both in the work and in the learning for which the work provides evidence.” Our students will be encouraged to create a portfolio that shows who they are and who they would like

to become. They will reflect on a variety of areas, including why their work is important to them, how they could improve their work, and what they are most proud of in their learning.

During the month of May, students will rehearse the shared conference format with their peers, in order to competently and confidently share their portfolio with their parents. We expect the children to share their strengths, successes, best work, and favorite subjects. Children may also suggest areas for improvement, and discuss their future goals for their learning. Parents will be asked to prepare questions to ask their students during the shared conference and then, leave a positive comment highlighting the growth that their child has made during the school year.

Assessing students by using portfolios and shared conferences has three educational benefits: to foster accountability, to improve communication skills, and to grow organizational skills. We want our students to take the lead in their learning and be intrinsically motivated to do their personal best. Our elementary teachers are excited to explore this new conference format with our children and their parents. The experience will give our children a real-life opportunity to communicate, collaborate, and think creatively—the pillars for learning at The Rectory School!

WHAT’S HAPPENING

ON CAMPUS WHAT’S HAPPENING

CARe Update Erin Hayden, Director of CARe Recently, CARe explored digital options for student observations, the collection of documentation for student portfolios, and most important, options to enhance the school-to-home connection. After researching and completing trials for several Internet-based applications, we settled on a Boston-based company called Kaymbu. “Kaymbu was conceived at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by parents seeking to harness the power of the web and mobile technologies to strengthen relationships between teachers, families, and the children they care for and love.”

With Kaymbu’s innovative product, CARe has taken connecting with families and recording student progress to a new level.

Utilizing Kaymbu’s iPad app, the teachers can take pictures of the children in action during the school day. This simple to use application allows a teacher to record conversations with students, tag pictures of children completing curriculum according to Connecticut preschool standards, write observations, and send notes to the child’s family, all from one easy menu. Additionally, at the end of each week, Kaymbu sends families a weekly picture report of

what the child has done while at CARe. Families have provided wonderfully positive feedback regarding the connection this allows them to have with their children, both knowing what is happening at school and having meaningful conversations at home. The teachers also appreciate the teacher-familystudent connection and the unexpected teacher-teacher connection Kaymbu has presented.

The CARe teachers all have Kaymbu installed on their iPads, allowing them to share information and individually see each child’s progress.

Recently, Kaymbu added additional options to their app. The “Daily Note” feature now allows the infant/toddler teachers the ability to send daily notes home regarding eating, diapering, sleeping, and curricular activities each day. The “Storyboards” feature allows teachers to create newsletters and documentation panels to share with families highlighting curricular content.

PROJECT POMFRET comes to Rectory!

During the winter term, Rectory is welcoming seventeen additional students and their teachers to campus for a collaborative experience as part of Project Pomfret. Beginning in early December, our grade 2-3 classroom participated in this exciting experience with our neighbors at Pomfret School. Our project is called “Teaching the Kids Next Door!” and we hosted freshman and sophomore students who are interested in learning more about the teaching profession. This is Pomfret’s third year of designing experiential project-based learning for their entire campus during the weeks between the Thanksgiving and winter holiday breaks. We introduced the students by joining for a morning meeting, as we gave the Pomfret students their teaching lesson plans in science for our winter term study of LIQUIDS, guided by our classroom teachers, Diane Hanson and Cara Bates. The experiences (which all focused on liquids to expose them to experiential learning) included individual teaching opportunities, observations, group experiences, field trips to Pomfret School, and beyond. In the book The 12 Touchstones of Good Teaching (2013), Bryan Goodwin notes that one of the best ways to help students engage in deep thinking about what they’re learning is simply through classroom discussions and debate. By matching our students with older mentors, we are not only building opportunities to share ideas and question the properties of liquids, but also modeling that learning happens—at any age!

Each Pomfret School student was matched with a grade 2-3 student, and the pairs learned about liquids, and about each other’s passions and interests. Elementary families were able to meet their child’s Pomfret School student teacher at our gingerbread trimming event, just before we left campus in mid-December. Be sure to ask the students in grade 2-3 to share more details about this wonderful experience!

On December 15, 2015 The Rectory School community gathered together for their annual Holiday Chapel at the Pomfret School Clark Chapel. Thanks to many administrators and faculty, the entire community could be driven over to Pomfret School. The whole congregation celebrated a service of lessons and carols.

Chaplain Andrew Seiscio brought a warm welcome to the community and delivered a great Holiday Chapel service. Many of the students and faculty volunteered to participate in the festivities. It was wonderful to see that The Rectory School recognizes the stories of Hanukkah and Christmas. The chapel was filled with the voices of the middle school chorus and RECappella group singing a variety of beautiful carols.

The site has been cleared for the future home of The Hale Elementary School and The Smith Learning Center, expected to open in 2017!

First Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Braden Long & Luis Zerpa, Teachers & Dorm Parents On November 22, 2015, The Rectory School boarding community gathered together for its first annual Thanksgiving Dinner. Thanksgiving is a very special time of the year for many of us. We saw this as the perfect venue for the students and the Pomfret community to get together in a meaningful way. It was important to offer the students the chance to share a formal, family-style sit-down meal with members of the community. For the community members who attended as guests, it was a great opportunity for them to see Rectory in a new light. To come in and share a formal meal with the students opened the eyes of many in the community. Everything we do at Rectory revolves around teachable moments. We brainstormed about this point for a good while. In the end, we thought it was important to include former faculty who live close by, in addition to other important members of our community. The students and community guests truly enjoyed sharing this meal together. Students behaved well and showcased the great sense of family that exists in our school. This event was a great success, and Rectory received much warm praise as a result.

As a young woman, I attended a small, public, grades 6-12 school in southeastern Connecticut and centered my studies entirely on my first love, music. As a musician, I focused almost entirely on this, attending my academic classes during the day, rehearsing with the band, and then leaving to play in community bands and orchestras in the later hours of the weekdays. In my mind, I had no business doing anything else, and the small school that I attended, while challenging academically and nurturing musically, did not require its students to become a part of a team sport. The students of Rectory School are fortunate in that its faculty and staff support them in their academic rigor and artistic capabilities and, in addition, require their participation in a team sport. As such, students’ eyes are opened to

new experiences that they would not otherwise have. As a young freshman, I was fortunate enough to meet one geometry teacher who encouraged me to try something new, clearly seeing past the limitations I had set for myself as being a so-called “one-trick pony.” That fall, I found myself lacing up my sneakers to become a part of the Wheeler Junior Varsity Volleyball team. Suddenly I began to crawl out of the pigeonhole I had created, where I had labeled myself a “non-athlete.” As a young athlete, I began to form bonds with my teammates, learn new skills through the repetition of practice, and learn to navigate my body’s capabilities. I’ve always felt that the sport of volleyball is a unique one that empowers young women to see themselves in a different light.

It is this experience that led me to pursue having a middle school girls’ volleyball team here at Rectory. Midway through the winter term this past school year, a colleague of mine and I had toyed with presenting Mike Healy, Director of Athletics, with the idea of this exciting

THE RECTORY SCHOOL new fall sport. Come summer break and the beginning of fall term, uniforms and new equipment were purchased and interest was piqued around the Rectory community. At our first practice, with Mike Healy as head coach and me as an assistant, our humble goal for a small team of 10 was completely shattered, with 18 girls coming to try out. Coach Healy and I were naturally excited for this turnout, but we knew that our season was going to be a challenging one. With so many girls never having experienced the sport before, we knew that we would be starting from scratch. Skills like play drills, hitting, and setting wouldn’t come until more than halfway through our season, as we needed to start with how to receive a ball when it came over the net, serving underhand, and basic communication. Despite these obstacles and our schedule consisting mainly of playing many higher-level teams, we were thrilled watching our enthusiastic girls each game, never losing hope or giving up on a single point. Countless referees and coaches commented on the fighting spirit of our Rectory Lady Wolves. Throughout the season, both Coach Healy and I saw confidence grow in our players. I began to recognize the same bright look in their eyes when they finally saw themselves as being a part of something more than just a team—these young women saw themselves as athletes and made improvements in leaps and bounds faster than we ever could have imagined. We are thrilled to see what our returning players have in store for us next fall. We anticipate this to be a growing sport for the years to come.

I would like to thank all our parents for their support of our teams, especially those who could make it to our games. Many of our parents live so far away that getting to games is nearly impossible; therefore, those who do play a huge role in making our players feel supported. Special thanks to those who brought treats or drinks for the players. Rectory is lucky to have such dedicated players, coaches, and parents.

Thanks to all of you for making my job easier. We look forward to continued successes this winter and welcome you to our games and matches. Go Wolves!

Fall Sport Wrap-up Michael Healy, Director of Athletics With the winter season beginning, I would like to share how proud and pleased we are with the performance of our fall teams.

So many wonderful memories and new friendships happened.

Challenging all our players to give their all each day and have fun in the process remained our goal. This fall the school certainly seemed to have a high level of accomplishment throughout.

The Seaward Family Student Pavilion Ryan Finnegan, Assistant Director of Communications On October 9, 2015, Rectory’s community gathered together to dedicate a new landmark on campus. The new Seaward Family Student Pavilion was designed to have more social gatherings outside. This is a great tool for guest speakers and class presentations. The amphitheater is truly a beautiful focal point that resides in the heart of The Rectory School’s campus. The dedication was an amazing event filled with speakers and alumni speaking about the Seaward family. Ever since the Seawards arrived at The Rectory School, they have brought so much to the community. Their commitment to this school has affected the student body and the consistent growth of the school’s alumni population. The Rectory School appreciates everything the Seawards do for the school.

New Director of Residential Life & School Counselor Justin Bendall, Director of Residential Life & School Counselor Last year, while I was interviewing for the Director of Residential Life opening, Mr. Williams mentioned that Rectory was planning on filling a School Counselor position that had just been created for this school year. I was intrigued, and as our conversations continued over the next few weeks, we outlined a job description that would entail both the residential life position and the counseling position. I was and continue to be very excited about having that dual aspect to my daily responsibilities.

As the months have progressed thus far and we have turned the page on another calendar year, I am pleased to report that my days continue to get busier and busier.

I say this because, in the age group we work with here at Rectory, typical developmental stages and social pressures often translate into a challenging time period for our students. I am no longer just the new head of residential life, but I am also

someone who is being seen more frequently as a resource for support to students.

It is a typical day now when two to three students stop by to talk to me about something going on in their lives—successes and challenges alike—and I can utilize the skills I learned while completing my MSW degree in a variety of ways. Sometimes those conversations take on a more therapeutic approach, and other times a simple encouraging word or sympathetic ear or pat on the back is sufficient.

A few weeks later, we met with the eighth- and ninth-grade boys and discussed the confusing messages sent by our society and culture about what it means to “be a man.” The plan is to continue the Creed Series throughout the year, so that we can address and dissect those lessons that are so important for children to learn, but which may not fit as neatly into an academic class or lesson as they might in a different setting and time.

I was lucky enough to present earlier this year at a full faculty meeting about working with students who present challenging behaviors; this was another great opportunity to share the knowledge I’d gained through my schooling about how to approach difficult situations or behaviors to ensure most likely a positive, productive outcome for all parties involved. Establishing appropriate boundaries, setting realistic expectations, and understanding developmental milestones, as well as being cognizant of our emotions and motivations while engaged in those discussions, are all important components that were the focus of my presentation.

Distinguished Service Award Each year on Alumni Reunion Weekend, The Rectory School presents the Distinguished Service Award (formerly the Lifetime Achievement Award) to an outstanding member of the Rectory community. This award is to be presented to an alumnus/a or faculty or staff member (past or present), or a friend of Rectory who has demonstrated outstanding characteristics and compassionate qualities in their communities, professions, and philanthropic endeavors. These attributes and contributions represent the character of Rectory.

The person to receive this award lives the Rectory School Creed: Responsibility, Respect, Honesty, and Compassion. This spring the Distinguished Service Award will be awarded to Michael Ellovich.

“Dr. E.” will be presented the award on Saturday, April 30, as part of The Alumni Weekend festivities.

Tang Challenge Faculty Perspective In recognition of the most important aspect of Rectory—its people—Oscar Tang ’53 and his son Kevin Tang ’82 have made a transformative gift to enhance faculty compensation and employee benefits. The Tangs have donated $2.5 million, with the intent to give a total donation of $5 million for this purpose. In addition to their outright $2.5 million donation to increase faculty salaries, the Tangs offered the following challenge: they will match all gifts made by other donors towards this endowment through June 30, 2018. The match will be up to an additional $2.5 million on a 1:1 basis.

The gift and challenge have a profound effect on the people who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of the students at Rectory. One donor who rose to the challenge and made a gift to Rectory, honored Nancy Green and Braden Long. Following are their words about what these gifts mean from their perspective:

NANCY GREEN: “A person considers herself fortunate to find work that feeds the soul and that serves others. When I began working at The Rectory School in 1999 as a tutor in the Individualized Instruction Program (IIP), I knew I had found both. At that time, salaries were low and did not compare with those at other junior boarding schools. Though faculty understood the importance of their contributions, compensation levels did not reflect that worth, and consequently, morale could dip. The Tang Challenge encourages us all—the Board and the Headmaster, who are intent on rewarding a job well done and attracting high-caliber faculty—as well as those of us who directly benefit from the Tang family’s vision. As a co-honoree of a generous donation to the Tang Family Endowment Fund, I feel proud to be a member of this faculty, all of whom support each other and invest daily in the lives of Rectory students.”

Mrs. Green has been a member of The Rectory School community since 1999.

She is an Individualized Instruction Program tutor and assists with the Residential Life Program in the dorm and in the dining hall.

BRADEN LONG: “Being a part of the Rectory community is special to me. I call Rectory my home and try to make it a home for everyone else who interacts with me. A few years ago, I was living in Glen Lea Cottage. However, I missed living in the dormitories, so I decided to move back to the dormitory setting. I had missed living with the boys and interacting with them daily. I enjoy being a dorm parent, from helping and teaching them how to clean their rooms, to playing games, to just saying “good night” when it was time for them to go to sleep. For these reasons, and so many more, Rectory is my home. It is important that the students think of Rectory as their home as well. I appreciate the Tang Family’s donation to The Rectory School, and the resulting gift in my honor, because they are tangible indications of their strong feelings for the Rectory community.”

Mr. Long has been a member of The Rectory School community since 2002.

He teaches 9th grade physics, coaches cross country and lacrosse, coordinates the dining hall, and resides in Lower DGB dormitory.

ino Cho ’78 is an alumnus and current member of the Board of Trustees who had a great experience at Rectory–so great, in fact, that he chose to move his family to Woodstock from South Korea several years ago, so that his son, Won Lee, who is now a ninth-grader, could attend Rectory as a day student. Gino says he has two reasons for wanting to send Won Lee to Rectory. “The first reason is that Rectory offered many wonderful teachers back when I was there, and I expected that the tradition had remained.

Mrs. Abbott’s mother, Mrs. Saunders, was my English teacher back then, and Mr. Bigelow was my tutor. This was after he had retired as the Headmaster. His philosophy and gentleness in education have been reflected everywhere and on everybody. The family-like environment and accommodations were lovely. It is a perfect place for young foreign students to start their American education! The second reason is my family ties to the school and the area. I grew up with Dr. Park’s and Dr. Chung’s children. I went to and became very familiar with many surrounding areas while living with them in Putnam Heights. I have many wonderful memories from my teenage years in Connecticut.”

Gino is not the only alumnus who wanted to continue the Rectory family legacy. We are fortunate this year to have nine students whose relatives have graduated from Rectory. James Bell III graduated from Rectory in 1971. This fall, his son, Charlie,

entered eighth grade. Tom Fogarty graduated from Rectory in 1973, returned as a teacher in the 90’s, and has since sent three of his children here: graduates Margaret ’11 and Patrick ’15, as well as Kathleen, who is currently in eighth grade. Peter Plourde ’77 attended Rectory as a day student; his son Peter is now in second grade. Bill Loos graduated from Rectory in 1978 and has two children in the elementary school: William, who is in second grade, and Adair, who is in first grade. Chris Lippke ’80 has sent both of his daughters to Rectory; Elizabeth graduated in 2012, and Alexandra is in eighth grade this year. Charlie Lynch is a 1983 graduate; his daughter, Olivia, graduated in 2015, and his son, Michael, joined us this year for sixth grade. Jack Maybank ’94 has a cousin, Maybank Burgdorf, who joined us this year for sixth grade. Sean Uytengsu ’05 also has a cousin here, Christian Hamilton, who is in eighth grade.

Additionally, there are 25 current students who have older siblings who have graduated from Rectory.

It is a wonderful thing to have so many alumni who value the Rectory experience so much that they have sent their children here.

Although many of the facilities have changed over the years, the dedication of the teachers and the strength of the community have not. We hope that alumni will continue to send their children to Rectory for years to come.

THE RECTORY SCHOOL what makes Rectory such a powerful experience because it allows you not only to access the necessary tools for maturation, growth and social interaction, but to seek within yourself the means to nurture your individuality and to begin defining your personal identity. It was at Rectory that I realized I had been born to lead, to set examples, to leave a mark. I studied diligently and passionately, with utmost appreciation for my teachers and a profound and genuine devotion to the process of learning. That is something I still carry with me: that avid sense of curiosity, and that hunger for understanding.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Gabriel Traversari ’79 about his Rectory experience as well as his life in the entertainment industry. Gabriel came to Rectory as a seventhgrader in 1976. It was his first time away from his home in El Crucero, Nicaragua, and although he faced many challenges, he came to think of Rectory as a second home and a place where he learned who he was.

W

hen asked about his time at Rectory, he had this to say: “Most of my memories of Rectory are wonderful. I say most because that first year was quite difficult for me. Just imagine a 12-year-old kid abandoning his country, his culture, his friends and family, and suddenly finding himself in a foreign land, unable to speak the language, unable to truly communicate with anyone.

I was excessively homesick and torn from the only reality I ever knew. So it was sink or swim for me. It was clear I had to either tackle my challenges and grab the bull by the horns, or slowly succumb to those feelings of alienation and hopelessness that seemed only logical and expected from anyone undergoing such drastic changes, especially at such an early age. But I think this is part of 36 RECTORY NEWS/ANNUAL REPORT

“On graduation day, in the spring of 1979, I was honored with several scholastic awards, including best student of my class. I had also gained the respect of my peers, and that proved invaluable to me. How wonderful to grow up in an academic community that validates you, boosts your confidence, and showers you with incentives when they see you work hard and excel. All my Rectory teachers did just that. They made me feel worthwhile, they tapped into my potential and helped it blossom. I can’t ever forget those wonderful people: Mr. and Mrs. John Green, Mr. Groom, Mr. Lefferts, Mr. Williamson, Mr. Seaward, Mr. Horvath. It seems like yesterday we would sit around and share in long, brilliant, loving conversations. Some of them are gone now, I know, and it saddens me deeply, but they will live eternally in my heart and this is the legacy they left behind, for me and for so many others.

“Now, as far as memories go, I remember playing–rather successfully–the small yet hilarious role of the ‘Keystone Cop’ in the musical Oliver, directed by Mrs. White, God bless her soul.

That was my first theatrical stint and I was hooked for life. I also remember the Dadaistic student film I produced during my ninth-grade year. It was a James Bond feature entitled, Passport to Eternity, written by, directed by and starring myself in the title role and involving half the student body in one way or another. I remember we were given full access to the school campus, special permissions, and almost too much freedom to develop this crazy idea. We never finished it, of course, but I recently stumbled upon dozens of 8mm reels that I should probably view and edit at some point. Might make for some hilarious flashback sessions. Truly magical days, for sure.”

At Rectory, it is almost always the faculty members who have the biggest impact on the students’ lives, and it was no different for Gabriel. He speaks fondly of the connections he made with the faculty at Rectory. “Mr. Green, Headmaster at the time, was like a father to me. He was also a friend of my family, which made our relationship that much more meaningful. I loved his morning discourses, his stern yet passionate messages, and his commitment to his work. I loved Mr. Peter Lefferts because he permitted me to fly with my wild imaginings and made that senior movie possible.

He was a mentor and a friend. And Mr. Groom, who was a walk-

THE RECTORY SCHOOL ing emblem of honorability and kindness. Such a warm soul. But the one teacher that I loved most was perhaps one who few people truly got to know. He was a bit of a curmudgeon on the outside but such a brilliant, funny, insightful and supportive fellow: Mr. Williamson. I remember wanting so badly to get assigned to his table so I could sit beside him and enjoy his dry, ironic humor, and his quiet but sincere affection. He, too, was a paternal figure of sorts, but more of a compeer. We loved talking about movies, and he must have really made an impact on me because the only science class I managed to pass in my life was his.

Strange how we form such formidable bonds with these teachers, human beings who selflessly–and sometimes inadvertently–educate us, not just in matters of academia but in the wonderful intricacies of life.”

Gabriel’s academic journey is a fascinating one, and it is clear that he greatly values the education he received as well as the assistance he received from others. Upon graduating from Rectory, he attended Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts. It was at Middlesex that he truly began his journey into theater and arts. Unexpected circumstances led him to Florida State University after high school.

“After I graduated [from Middlesex], I was accepted at Northwestern, clearly my first choice because of their renowned School of Speech, but as fate would have it, I never made it there. There were political and social upheavals in Nicaragua at the time, and my stepfather simply could not afford to pay for my college education. So I took a year off, worked randomly, and one day I got a call from my high school adviser. She urged me to continue with my studies, and when she learned I was living in Florida, she immediately suggested I visit Florida State University. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would end up going to a college in Tallahassee, but as it turns out, it was the best thing that could happen to me. I quickly discovered that FSU was–and probably still is–ranked as one of the top five schools of drama in the country. My training there was unbelievable, more than I could ever wish for. I studied under luminaries like Joseph Papp, Roger Rees, Raul Julia, and a myriad of exemplary acting instructors. This is why I say that life has peculiar ways of guiding us along its sinuous road of possibilities. I managed to cover my college education partly with the generous support of one Mrs. Timken, mother of a fellow student from Rectory. So you see how it all comes full circle. This amazing, philanthropic woman simply chose to lend me a hand in a time of need, and because of her and of so many other ‘kind strangers,’ as Tennessee Williams would say, I am able to stand where I am today.”

Gabriel has had many different jobs within the entertainment industry; he began his career in 1989 as the male anchor of the first morning program produced by Univision, the leading Hispanic television network in the United States. He quickly became a household name which brought him to new opportunities, including acting in soap operas and episodic shows on Casa Club TV, a subdivision of MGM Networks, Latin America; E! Entertainment, Latin America; Cosmopolitan TV; Mega TV; and Telemundo. Along with being a television journalist and anchor, he has produced, written, and directed many television shows. Seven years ago, he left all of that behind to start working on personal projects in an effort to give back. He was a musical manager for a while and created Myla Vox, the most successful boy band Nicaragua has ever seen. Gabriel recently released a book, The Dictator’s Daughter, which is available in Spanish on iBooks.

He is working on two more books and a documentary, which will be produced next year.

Currently, Gabriel is an independent producer and the president of a company called Luna Firma: Conceptos Creativos. His company puts together projects of various natures including books, television specials, documentaries, and live events. In regards to being his own boss, he says, “A long time ago I decided that I needed to call my own shots and respond more faithfully to my inner urgings. It’s a lot harder to depend on yourself for survival, but it is that much more enriching and liberating. I suppose priorities change as you gain momentum in your journey, and the key to it all is to accept every moment and stay focused in the present and in whatever joy that present provides you.”

As far as his personal life is concerned, Gabriel greatly values his friendships and his relationship with his family. “The wonderful thing about life is that you sort of create your ideal family as you [plod] along, and it is composed of those few selected people with whom you have found special, almost inherent affinity with. I have such friends, even if I can count them on one hand. And I still hold a very close relationship with my brother Fernando and my mother, both of whom live in Nicaragua. I have no pets and no plants. It is very difficult to take care of such things when you are as errant a pilgrim as I am.”

Gabriel attended Rectory for three years, during which time he blossomed from an unsure young boy to a studious and ambitious young man. He embodies all the things Rectory hopes for in its graduates; he is passionate about his work and relationships, works hard to achieve his goals, and truly enjoys his life.

Our two boys, Nicholas (21) and Peter (18) are both at Bennington College. Nicholas is a senior, and Peter is a freshman. We miss them when they are away and look forward to their trips home. Heidi and I are holding down the fort with our dog, Tuck, and our two cats, Hazel and Alice.

Alex Aaron ’84 Alex reports, “Life since Rectory has taken me to many places and afforded great experiences! Where to begin? After graduation from college, I had a lengthy career in the wine industry and then took on my inner adventurer by becoming a ski patroller in Mammoth Lakes, CA. I guess this encouraged more confidence to follow my bliss. As a result, I moved to Prague, Czech Republic, for seven years while working between two U.S. companies in marketing/bike tours. Since returning to the U.S., I’ve resettled in Bend, OR, where I run a small vacation rental business (Enchanted Dwellings) while still having the good fortune to keep traveling. Bend is magically situated in beautiful high-desert/mountain country. It has great weather, user-friendly trails and mountains, fishing, golfing, biking, etc. Plus, it’s currently one of the largest micro-beer towns in the nation.”

Rick Hoff ’84 Rick and his wife, Christina, have left Maryland’s Eastern Shore and relocated to Columbia, SC. Their children Anna (10) and Corey (9) are attending the Hammond School.

Joe Mathieu ’89 Joe shared his CBS bio with us. “Joe Mathieu has returned to his professional home town and assumed the morning radio news anchor duties at the top-rated, award-winning WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

With more than 25 years of radio news experience, Mathieu joined WBZ in the spring of 2011 from Sirius XM Satellite Radio in Washington, DC, where he spent four years as Program Director of P.O.T.U.S., Sirius XM’s news and

talk channel dedicated to covering the politics of the United States. In fact, it was Mathieu who developed and launched the popular P.O.T.U.S. channel in 2007.

He hosted a daily news-talk program on P.O.T.U.S. and also worked as a White House correspondent. Mathieu’s radio news career in the nation’s capital began in 1998, working as a news anchor and editor at Metro Networks, delivering morning news on stations including DC101 and WASH-FM. He spent the following seven years as managing editor and anchor at the CBS MarketWatch Radio Network, providing updates and analysis on the economy and financial markets to stations including WBZ NewsRadio 1030 in Boston, 1010 WINS in New York, WBBM in Chicago, and WTOP in Washington.

Before Washington, DC, Mathieu worked as both an anchor and reporter in Boston, where he spent time at WRKO as part of that station’s ’96 New Hampshire Primary coverage team. Mathieu was also one of the youngest news directors in the country while working at the Boch Broadcasting radio group in Hyannis, MA. He was the morning drive news anchor on Boch stations including WXTK and WCOD, covering news stories central to the Cape and Islands region and the state of Massachusetts. Mathieu got his start in broadcasting at WINY Radio in Putnam, CT,

1990s

Cara Roure Johnson ’90 Cara became the Head of School at Litchfield Montessori School in August, 2015.

She earned her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Connecticut where, as a Postdoctoral Fellow, she published research and taught both undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, she still maintains an affiliation with the Department of Anthropology at UConn. This is a gratis appointment as a research scientist, which allows her to continue to publish.

For the last three years, Cara has taught science at The Montessori Middle School in Norwalk, CT. While there, she also served as Director of their Outdoor Expedition Program and was an advisor and part-time administrator.

Scott Comegys ’95 Scott lives in Shreveport, LA. He is married and has three daughters, ages 5, 2, and 1. He is working as a geophysicist for a local oil company. In his words, “I map seismic data and try to match it with well data in order to get a better geologic understanding of the subsurface with the goal of finding oil and gas.”

Ethan Jamron ’95 Tom Washburn recently met with Ethan in New York. Tom writes, “It was wonderful to spend time with Ethan in NYC. He is living in Brooklyn, NY, and man-

ages properties in Brooklyn and Queens.

During our conversation, I realized that as an adult, Ethan continues to do things the ‘right way’ in his business life. Since he was the recipient of the John and Millie Green Cup on graduation day in 1995, it does not surprise me that he conducts business in this manner. Ethan has been a consistent supporter of the school and still credits Rectory for setting him on the path to success in life. I thank him for taking time out of his busy schedule to have lunch and reminisce about old times. We also talked about exciting things that are happening at school right now. It was great to catch up with Ethan and I look forward to seeing other alumni throughout the year.”

Ryan Beckman ’96 “I am currently the Foodways historian at Old Sturbridge Village. I have been there for 15 years and have held my current title for a little over six years. Rectory brought us on a field trip there in eighth grade, and it must have made a strong impression! Thanks for the wonderful education, Rectory!”

2000s

Josh Carney ’00 “After ski bumming in Aspen and working as an operations manager for a sailing company in the British Virgin Islands, I found my niche in event production and management. For the past five years I’ve been an NYC-based live events producer, managing and executing high-profile dynamic live events, both domestic and international.”

Jamison Stone ’00 “It was a real pleasure working on Breakfast for Boarders with the Seawards, and not only staying in touch, but helping the community. My first novel, Rune of the Apprentice, has been made available for

pre-order on Inkshares. I’ve been writing professionally since I graduated from college, but this is my first published book.”

William Wessinger ’01 William recently became the athletic trainer at his alma mater, Christchurch School in Virginia. He and his wife, Graciela, welcomed a son, William, in August of 2014.

Jaehoon Kim ’05 Jaehoon earned Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Northwestern in Chicago.

He is currently working in Los Angeles as an IT consultant.

Pierce Kuchle ’05 Pierce has his own film and television production company, Tag Your World Productions, whose clients include the Newman’s Own Foundation, the Radio Pet Lady, and UFC Gyms. His recent film, Salvation, was featured at the Rhode Island Film Festival and is screening at the Santa Fe Film Festival in December.

Spencer Kuchle ’05 Spencer is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in African American Studies in the W.E.B. Du Bois Department at UMass-Amherst.

He was awarded a dissertation fellowship by the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas-Austin to work on his thesis, “Texts and Subtexts: Vernacular Masking in Key and Peele as a Lens for Viewing Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Musical Comedy.”

Robert McCann ’05 This past summer, Rob, a Marine Corps combat veteran, was hired as a liaison to Maine veterans. This two-year, full-time fellowship is through the Congressional Wounded Warrior Program, an initiative that provides employment RECTORY NEWS/ANNUAL REPORT

THE RECTORY SCHOOL for wounded and disabled veterans. Rob will assist veterans and their families who are struggling to engage with the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Rob served in the U.S. Marines from 2009-2012,with two deployments to Marjah, Afghanistan, and a third in Oman, where he trained Jordanian forces to replace U.S. forces departing the Middle East. As an infantry team leader in charge of a 15-person team, he fought in Operation Moshtarak, which was the largest joint operation of the war in Afghanistan when it took place in 2010.

In 2013, Rob hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine in honor of his best friend in the service, Kyle Joseph Coutu, a Rhode Island resident, who was killed in action in Afghanistan. Rob raised more that $20,000 for a charity set up by Coutu’s family. He also worked for two different organizations that assist homeless veterans with finding housing.

PK Smith ’05 PK has been living in Hong for the past two years. He works at the Chinese University of Hong Kong recruiting for their China Studies program.

Robert Haynes ’08 Bobby graduated with distinction from New York University, Abu Dhabi, in May of 2015. He majored in psychology with a minor in political science. He worked at the US Mission to International Organizations in Vienna, in the IAEA section. He is planning to attend medical school next fall.

Hannah Smith ’08 Hannah just graduated from Paul Mitchell The School and is now a licensed cosmetologist. She works as a stylist at Regis Salon at The Westfarms Mall in West Hartford, CT. Jillianne Perry ’09 Jill is living in Fayetteville, AR, where she landed her dream job of being a pastry chef. She and her fiancé, Ethan, are planning a November 2016 wedding.

Min Jae Yoo ’09 In July of 2015, Min Jae played for Korea in The Asian Pacific Lacrosse Championship. Min Jae said: “My seventh-grade year at Rectory, I debated between tennis and lacrosse when spring semester came.

Not sure why I chose lacrosse back then— probably because it was something new.

Rectory taught me to venture into new areas of interest, for sure.

What do I think of my decision back in the spring of 2007? I am simply glad I chose lacrosse, especially Rectory lacrosse, because now I enjoy and take pride in representing Team Korea in the international stage. Without the Rectory lacrosse program, I would not be where I am now.”

Alicia Brisson ’11 Alicia writes: “I am part of a nationwide organization called Camp Kesem. There are 62 chapters across the country at different colleges. Camp Kesem provides a week-long summer camp to kids aged 6-16 whose parents have been affected by cancer (passed away from cancer, are currently battling cancer, or are in remission).

I am the Outreach Coordinator for Camp Kesem Chestnut Hill, the Boston College Chapter of Camp Kesem. It is truly an amazing organization, and the week that I spent in August being a camp counselor for these kids was one of the most memorable and moving weeks of my life.”

Liam Batson ’12 One of our amazing grads, Liam Batson ’12, was recently given the Houghs Neck Heroism Award! An excerpt from the award description follows.

“While Liam was working a summer job at the Quincy Youth Hockey Arena, a group of adults were playing a pickup game. Suddenly play stopped and one of the players, a 44-year-old, collapsed on the ice. Liam quickly called 911, as another employee, Pat McCormack, administered CPR. Liam took the lead and administered lifesaving shocks from the AED (defibrillator). Pat and Liam continued their effort until paramedics arrived. Their efforts did not go unrecognized by the doctors at Boston Medical Center. They concurred that this man’s life was definitely saved by their heroic efforts.

Liam is an Emery & Henry College rugby player, and he serves as a volunteer for the United Way of Abingdon, VA. He’s a champion volunteer for Cradles to Crayons and spends much of his free time there. As a junior at St. Andrew’s School in DE, Liam went to Haiti where they installed solar panels, constructed a soccer field, and immersed themselves in the Haitian culture. At commencement last year, Liam was awarded the DyAnn Miller Community Service Award.”

THE RECTORY SCHOOL Christian Vital ’13 Christian will graduate from St. Thomas More in the spring of 2016. He has signed to play Division 1 basketball for the University of Las Vegas starting in the 201617 season. Christian is a 6’2” guard from Queens, NY, with an impressive threepoint shot. Victor Lou ’14 In July of 2015, Victor played for China in The Asian Pacific Lacrosse Championship. Victor tells us, “The Asian Pacific Lacrosse Championship is held once every two years, and there are eight countries and regions participating in the men’s games: Korea, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. The purpose is to develop lacrosse in the Asian Pacific area. Rectory has taught me way more than academics; it has also fostered my hobbies with heart and pride.

To be participating in such a great event was fascinating, and Rectory has given me the opportunities to try new things. It was even more exciting to see other Rectory graduates, compete with them, and to realize how small the world is. Everybody comes from all around the world and becomes one big family. Thank you, Rectory!”

Sammy Park ’14 “Last April, St. Mark’s Robotics team was able to attend the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) championship held in St. Louis, MO. It was my first year at St. Mark’s and first year being a part of robotics team. I learned so many lessons from the championship competition. I was able to view the world with broader perspective. I also realized that there are so many areas that I need to work on to be better as a part of robotics team, but most importantly as an individual. I am so glad that Rectory is giving students more STEM related opportunities, especially by having a robotics team. St. Mark’s School also supports kids from other schools to have the experience of robotics. Some St. Mark’s students volunteer as mentors for the

IN MEMORIAM John Corsi ’83 John Thomas Corsi of Denver, CO passed away suddenly on Dec. 5, 2015 at the age of 48. He is survived by his three children, Andrew Thomas (13), Nicholas James (12) and John Owen (9). He is also survived by his parents John and Linda Corsi of St. Michaels, MD, siblings Mark Corsi of Austin, TX, Kathy Corsi of Weston, MA, and Brian Corsi of Danvers, MA. John was a 1986 graduate of Tabor Academy, where he excelled in football, hockey and lacrosse. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hobart College in 1990 and Master of Science in Environmental Law from Vermont Law School in 1993. He enjoyed an 18-year career at Denver’s CH2M Hill, where he was Vice President of Media and Public Relations. A loving family man and wonderful friend to many, John will be remembered for his kindness, wit, professionalism, and dedication to coaching his sons on numerous hockey rinks and lacrosse fields. His contagious energy and unique view of the world around him will be missed by all who knew him.

Join those who are leaving a legacy at Rectory… become a member of the Bigelow Society Established in 2002 in memory of Rectory’s founder, Father Frank Bigelow, The Bigelow Society honors all those who have taken the special step of including Rectory in their long-term plans by naming Rectory as a beneficiary in their will or trust plans.

Harold Anthony ’51 is one who has indicated he has made provisions for Rectory. “I’ve had Rectory in my will since the 1970s. My experience there was very positive–in fact, I sent my two sons (Scott ’85, Trent ’90) to Rectory, as I believed then and still do now in what Rectory does. I think it’s important to give back. My mother continued to donate to Rectory’s Annual Fund until she died in 1987, and I want to continue the legacy of my family’s support. Giving to the Annual Fund is one way I can do this, but leaving something in my will for the School will perpetuate my giving even further.”

Another current Bigelow Society member who asked not to be named explained his motivation for including Rectory in his will.

“Rectory helped shape who I am today. People like John Green, Kevin Leddy, and Brad Seaward had a significant influence on my life as a young person and, even today, I utilize the lessons I learned at Rectory. Being dyslexic, I still take notes today the way I learned at Rectory, and I attribute much of my educational and professional success to my time there. By naming Rectory in my will, I can help future generations of students receive the same benefits of a Rectory education that I was so fortunate to get.”
