Director’s Notes

Hello! So much is happening in our Department, that I can hardly keep up too! Here are a few highlights. The Parks & Recreation Department is now fully staffed with the last addition of the Eton Senior Citizen Coordinator, Josie Hinojosa! She was added to the full-time staff on March 11, 2024. She has proven to be a great addition to our team. We now have some projects completed and have started some new ones. The marquee signs are in at Berwyn and Eton Senior Recreation Centers, the bathrooms at Eton are just about completed, the new cement and pavilion are completed in the courtyard at Eton, doors have been replaced at both centers, windows have been replaced at

Park Permits

Berwyn, the blinds are being replaced at Berwyn, and boiler work has been done at Eton. These are most of the projects, but there are still more to come! We have also started construction at Van Houten Park! The project is slated to be completed by the end of July. We will have a brand-new community park for our residents to use. What is even more exciting is we are applying for grants for other well needed upgrades and replacements in our community buildings and parks. Stay tuned, as we continue to improve the quality of life for all of our residents by improving all of our facilities and parks!

Indoor Walking Program

The gymnasium at the Richard A. Young Recreation Center is open to anyone wishing to get in an extra mile or two. Program hours are every Monday thru Friday from 7:00 - 8:30 a.m. There is no charge.

Refund Policy

Refunds are given when:

A program is cancelled by the Dearborn Heights Parks and Recreation Department, A request for refund is made either in writing, accompanied by a receipt, or by contacting the Parks and Recreation Department directly at least 7 days prior to the start date of the program. Phone requests must be followed by submission of your original receipt to the Parks and Recreation office, Special consideration for refunds will be given for medical reasons

No requested refunds are processed without the original receipt. Processing takes three to four weeks. Your receipt must accompany any request for refund.

In keeping with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it pertains to access to programs, and upon receiving adequate notice, the Dearborn Heights Parks and Recreation Department will make reasonable accommodations for persons with special needs. Call 791-3600 if you need assistance.

Community Room Rental

The community rooms at the Richard A. Young Recreation Center and Canfield Community Center are available for public rental. Perfect for bridal and baby showers, graduation parties, anniversaries, birthdays, group meetings, etc. There is a non-refundable reservation fee of $60 that will hold your date, plus:

Canfield Center fees: (max. 50 People)

Meeting Room: $50 per hour (residents) $55 per hour (non-residents)

Kitchen Access: $25 additional fee

Richard A. Young Center fees: (max. 100 people)

Meeting Room: $100 per hour (residents)

$125 per hour (non-residents)

Summer Movie Series

Central Park will be supervised by our part-time staff for the summer in order to provide organized play. This program is limited to 60 participants and will be held outdoors. Participants can attend freely throughout the week for a flat rate. The program includes activities, picnics, field trips, and more!

Mackinac Island Trip

37th Annual Senior Golf Tournament

Date: TBD (August) 8a.m. Shotgun Start

Senior scramble golf tournament held at Warren Valley Golf Course. There will be Men’s, Women’s, and Co-Ed teams. Lunch, prizes, and awards will follow golf.

Junior Tackle Football and Cheerleading

Raiders Junior Football Club will be offering football and cheerleading to all youth ages 8-13. First time participants must present a birth certificate. The Raiders are a part of the Downriver Jr. Football League and play their home games at Parkland Park. The Dearborn Heights Panthers Junior Football and Cheerleading Club will be offering tackle football, ages 6-14 (up to 175 lbs.), and cheerleading, ages 7-14. The Panthers are a part of the Western Suburban Jr. Football League and play home games at the Annapolis High School field. Practices start late July and the season goes to November. It consists of 8 games and playoffs. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. The D7 Dad’s Club offers Flag Football and Cheerleading for ages 6-15. Games are played on Sunday at the Annapolis High School field (Behind Pardee School) on Pardee St. The season runs from September to November. For information, please contact Mike Doney (313) 701-2833 or visit d7dadsclub.org.

DRD Swim Club

The Dearborn/Dearborn Heights Recreation Dolphins Swim Club (DRD) is a competitive swim program for boys and girls of elementary, middle, and high school ages. The primary purpose of the program is to develop the skills of swimmers for advancement through different levels of swimming competition sponsored by Michigan Swimming and USA Swimming. Practices are held at Dearborn High School and Smith Middle School in Dearborn during the school year. Practices are held outside at Dunworth Pool located in Levagood Park in Dearborn during the summer. Information regarding registration timelines, fees, and policies can be found on the DRD Dolphins Swim Team website at: www.swimdrd.org.

Learn Karate and self-defense yearround. Master Gordon Schollenberger, an accomplished seventh degree black belt, and his daughter, Nova, an accomplished second degree black belt, will teach you how to defend yourself through discipline, training, and a developed mind, body and spirit.

Classes are open to men, women, and children age 8 and older. Join any time!

Cardio Drumming

Tuesdays, 7:30-8:30p.m.

$10 Drop-in Fee per class

Cardio Drumming is a full-body cardio jam session, combining light resistance with constant, simulated drumming. Drum off the pounds, aggression, and stress! This is a one-of-a-kind workout for all levels. You will burn between 400-900+ calories, strengthen and sculpt infrequently used muscles with a combination of cardio moves, strength training and drumming. This combo works the entire body, raises the heart rate to a fatburning zone, and forces each move to be as precise as a basic beat. Bring your own 16-18 gallon plastic utility tub and a 65-75cm resistant yoga/exercise ball. Drum sticks are provided if you don’t have your own. A post workout drink is included in the class price each week.

19th Annual City-Wide Garage Sale

Located on the grounds of Dearborn Heights Canfield Community Center. Everyone is welcome! Over 100 spaces are available to rent for the day. Sign up is at the Dearborn Heights Parks and Recreation Department (1801 Beech Daly).

Kids Klub Summer Day Camp

June 17 - August 16

8:30a.m. - 4:30p.m.

Program will include field trips twice a week, arts & crafts, sports, games, movies, etc. Instructor:Child ration will be 1:12 (whenever possible). Participants will be required to bring a sack lunch and drinks/snacks. Our program schedule will be available in June. Pre-registration and advance payment is required before each week begins. Class size is limited; first come, first served. T-shirts for field trips are required and sold separately at the Richard A. Young front desk for $10.

Residents: $140/week

Non-Residents: $150/week

Before Care and After Care Program will be held for the participants in Day Camp that register for it. Toys, games, and activities will be provided. This care program is available from 7:30-8:30a.m. and 4:30-5:30p.m. at the Richard A. Young Recreation Center. Fees are $15 per week, per session ($30/week for both sessions). Advanced registration is required and late fees will be assessed if your child is picked up after the provided care hours.
