Department Update FROM THE DIRECTOR... Well, another summer has past, and we are welcoming in the fall and the winter of 2024. It’s hard to believe that the year has flown by so quickly. We have completed and started many more projects within the Parks & Recreation Department. We have taken down the Van Houten Park play structure and will be replacing it with a big, beautiful new structure. We will also be putting in a new parking lot, and renovating the splash pad, among other additions that will be made to the park. We will be making many renovations and repairs at the Eton and Berwyn Senior Recreation Centers. Some of the projects included in this; are new doors, new windows, new boilers, renovation of the bathrooms, refurbished courtyard pavilion, new cement, and new marquee signs. Along with projects, we have added our last piece of the puzzle regarding staff members. We have hired a new recreation coordinator at the Richard A. Young Center. I would also like to congratulate two of our long-time volunteers for our program. They received awards at the RSVP banquet held on September 29, 2023. Ann Cornyn and Kenneth Fussell were awarded for their giving of time to the senior programs. Senior volunteers have been the mainstay of our program for years since I began my journey here in Dearborn Heights in 1988. We could not have offered the programs and events we have, if we had not had such loving and giving people. Congratulations goes out to Ann and Kenny. Hurrah to two well deserved people! Finally, we have a very special occasion coming up in November that I would like to bring to your attention. On November 8, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., at the Eton Center, we will be celebrating Larry Girard’s 105th BIRTHDAY! Yes, that’s right he is turning 105 years young. Larry has been a long-time participant at the Eton Center and an avid billiard player. Hopefully, Larry can give us his secret to living well and living long.
