MANAGER’S MESSAGE Welcome to springtime in Richland! We may have started off with a surprise snowstorm or two, but warm weather and summer fun is on the way!

In late March we welcomed the first cruise boat of the season, the American Empress from American Queen Voyages. Soon after the vessels from American Cruise Lines began regularly docking in Howard Amon Park as well. We are always excited to see these boats make their way to Richland each season.

They bring thousands of visitors from around the country and the world to enjoy the Tri Cities’ 300+ days of sunshine, our museums, eateries, coffee shops, and small businesses.

The Parks & Public Facilities staff in Parks, Recreation and our Public Library provide our citizens and visitors with opportunities to improve their health, play and expand your knowledge. Inside this Activity Guide for May – August 2022 are countless opportunities to engage and connect with others and yourself in the months ahead. There are special events, fitness classes, STEM activities, and so much more!

Our parks will be hopping this summer with the Live@5 concert series at John Dam Plaza (Thursdays, June 2 – July 28) as well as the Windermere-sponsored Friday Family Movie Series for movies in the parks. We are hosting a special springtime showing of Solo: A Star Wars Story on Aril 30th behind the Richland Community Center, but the regular summer movie schedule kicks off on June 17th and runs nearly every Friday through August 5th. And finally, the 12th Annual Geocoin Challenge (Saturday, June 25), Richland Regatta (June 24–26), See3Slam (July 9-10) and Allied Arts Association’s 71st Annual Art in the Park (July 29–30) are just a handful of popular events for all ages!

The three-day event will play host to 60-80 race boats of various types ranging in speed from 70-170 mph, providing non-stop action on the water. The beautiful waterfront of Howard Amon Park provides the perfect location for food vendors, a beer garden, and spectacular views of the racecourse. Summer Swim Team Skills Assessment

Participants will be asked to complete swim tasks to assess their readiness for the Swim Team setting. The Skills Assessment will take roughly 10 minutes. You may drop in and take the assessment anytime during the listed times. After receiving approval from the skill assessment instructor, you may take your certificate and register for the Summer Swim Team. Please remember that only a limited number of participants are allowed on the Swim Team and registrations are taken on a first come first serve basis. A place on the Summer Swim Team is not guaranteed by taking the Summer Swim Team Skills Assessment. Testing is drop-in only.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding course will help you develop skills and experience that will be valued by colleges and future employers. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for Lifeguards.

Please note that passing of the LGT Course does not guarantee employment.

Steps to becoming a certified lifeguard: 1. Sign up for Lifeguard Training 2. Pass the Pre-course Swim Test (Day 1 of LGT), Swim Test includes: swim 300 yards continuously.

Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds, 2-minute treading water using legs only.

Red Cross Lifeguarding manual and CPR mask are included in the training fee and will be handed out upon passing the Pre-Course Swim Test.

AQUATICS

This program is designed to introduce children to competitive swimming in a recreational setting.

Program is approximately 7 weeks, featuring several swim meets at area pools in the surrounding area.

Skills and techniques will be taught by pool staff with competitive swim team experience. All participants will receive a t-shirt. PLEASE INDICATE A SHIRT SIZE WHEN REGISTERING. New participants must pass the Summer Swim Team Skills Assessment to register.

WHICH CLASS SHOULD I REGISTER MY CHILD FOR? This class will focus on ways for you to enjoy water with your child. This class emphasizes parental teaching methods for water adjustment and basic skills. An adult must be in the water with the child throughout the class time. This class is designed to make your child more comfortable and enjoy being in & around the water.

Child will blow bubbles but is not comfortable submerging entire face in water, needs support with all swimming abilities, and is not very comfortable in the water. Child can only swim a few kicks before needing assistance.

Child is comfortable putting face in water, can glide, kick, etc. for five or more feet and lifts head up to breathe. Child is able to float on the front & back unsupported and is ready to learn elementary back stroke.

Child is able to swim free style and elementary backstroke without support for fifteen feet or more and is able to swim unassisted in deep end. Child may be swimming for a swim team with the youngest group. Ready to learn other strokes and is ready to breathe to the side while swimming.

Child can swim fairly comfortably but needs stroke adjustments/work on endurance. Child is extremely comfortable with free style, back stroke, and may need some help with breaststroke and butterfly.

Child can swim all basic strokes accurately with correct breathing pattern and can swim the length of the pool comfortably without problem. The child may still need some stroke adjustments for the butterfly.

Child is very comfortable in the water. Can swim all strokes two or more laps in a row. Swims on the swim team at a high level. Instructional swim will be to improve endurance and strengthen and tone muscles.

Dance Classes: Must register three (3) days prior to the start of the class. If minimum is not met, the class will be cancelled.

New Attitude Line Dancing Instructor: Jo Miller The first 30 minutes or so, we will learn basic steps and terminology associated with line dancing. Then we will move into fun, easy beginner dances to all rhythms of music. In the last part of class, we will focus on improving your skills as a line dancer.

Dancing helps tone muscles and may help increase your memory and focus.

Instructor: TaiFei Scott Zumba is a dance fitness class. It uses Latin-inspired music and easy to follow dance movements creating a fun and effective workout program. Zumba provides a non-intimidating opportunity for nondancers and new exercisers. It's the most fun way to achieve fitness goals, and for all age groups especially designed for older adults. Try it! Richland Fire Department will provide instruction in a 45-minute session on simple, but effective CPR and AED techniques that people can use to help save lives. Ninety percent of cardiac arrest victims die before reaching a hospital or medical facility.

Effective CPR provided in the first minutes can increase survival by two to three times. Youth ages 8–15 must be accompanied by a registered adult.

COLUMBIA BASIN BMX www.usabmx.com/tracks/1558 Columbia Basin BMX is in Richland next to the Horn Rapids Softball Complex. This racing facility operates under the sanctioning body of USA BMX and current rules and regulations are always followed. This racing facility is operated only by volunteers and is always welcoming any person that would like to get involved to help this track remain the greatest racing facility in the NW!!

Memberships can be purchased through USABMX.com and/or at the BMX racing facility during operating seasonal hours, generally March – November. Memberships through USA BMX cost $60.00 and are good for the rolling calendar year. Once a USA BMX membership is acquired the racing fees at Columbia Basin BMX (CBBMX) are $10/single point race, $25/double point race and $35/triple point race. This year gate practice fees, hosted on Tuesday evenings, will be $4.00 for 2 hours of practice. Requirements for riding at any sanctioned event are long sleeve shirt, pants, closed toed shoes and helmet.

The track can provide registration one-day trial membership paperwork as well as full one-year membership paperwork, as needed. Spectators are always welcome and can watch for free! Please look at this year's schedule to see what days and times we will be racing.

HANFORD REACH NATIONAL MONUMENT

https://www.fws.gov/national-monument/hanford-reach The Hanford Reach National Monument, comprising over 196,000 acres in arid eastern Washington, was the first national monument for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and broke the mold, so to speak, of what a national wildlife refuge is. Yes, there is abundant wildlife, endangered species, and unique ecosystems. However, no other refuge is so focused on history, cultural resources, geology, paleontology, and other non-wildlife-related resources. Throw in an eligible wild and scenic river— rare for the agency outside of Alaska—and the FWS had to rethink how to manage resources with which it typically had little experience.

HORN RAPIDS MOTORSPORTS COMPLEX www.hornrapidsmx.com Horn Rapids Motorsports Complex is the premier motocross track and off-road facility in the Pacific Northwest located in Richland. Tracks are made up of sandy loam and are supervised throughout the practice day. HRMC is a licensed EMS Agency and all of our EMTs and paramedics are trained in off road vehicle support. They are on site during open business hours. Track Flaggers and full HRMC crew are on site during weekends. Various tracks are offered: Main Nationals MX track, GP track (Area51), Pee Wee track beg. Quads, Jeeps, UTV’s, Heavy 4x4’s are welcome and can use competitive racetracks under a supervised atmosphere on a skill-based level class separation.

HRMC is open for practice from January 1st weekend after the new year to mid-December every year. Gates open at 9:30am Thursday and Friday during scheduled business times and 9:00am on Saturday and Sunday. HRMC offers camping Thursday through Sunday during selected business hours.

HRMC offers an after hour arrive late camp area for your convenience. You can arrive the evening before posted openings and camp in the after-hour area free of charge. www.tapteal.org The Tapteal Greenway is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization founded in 1995 that works to preserve the rustic character of the Lower Yakima River by protecting native habitats and species through conservation. This group enhances recreational opportunities throughout the corridor by providing outdoor education programs and promoting public access to these resources. The Tapteal Greenway is a 100% volunteer organization driven by the board of directors and funded solely by member dues, donations, and grants. The Tapteal Greenway employs no staff and has no endowment.

The Tapteal Greenway is the 35-mile corridor along and including the Yakima River extending from Kiona Bend at Benton City to the mouth of the river at Bateman Island in Richland. The land trail portion is identified as the Tapteal Trail, and our water version on the river is identified as the Tapteal Water Trail. This corridor includes a complex mix of federal, state, county, municipal, and private ownership as well as a variety of habitats ranging from arid shrub steppe to lush emergent marshlands.

The 3 Rivers Road Runners have been running strong in the Tri-Cities, Washington since the late 1970’s. We welcome all who share our lifestyle of enjoying a good swim, bike or run. The 3 Rivers Road Runners are for runners and triathletes of all shapes and sizes, from the veteran ultramarathoner or Ironman triathlete to the beginner working towards that first 5 km fun run or sprint triathlon, and everyone in between.

The primary goal of the 3 Rivers Road Runners is to promote running and multi-sport events in the Tri-Cities. Besides providing events for our members and athletes in the region, we hope to attract new athletes to the club that can benefit from the healthful, positive lifestyle gained through running and multi-sport. Over the years, one primary focus has been fitness for the children in our area and the battle against childhood obesity. We have helped raise thousands of dollars for local elementary school physical education programs through our Leprechaun Dash fun run in March. TRI-CITIES GIRLS FASTPITCH SOFTBALL www.tcgfsa.org The Tri-Cities Girls Fastpitch Softball Association (TCGFSA) is a not-for-profit organization providing opportunities for young ladies, ages 6–18, to play recreational fastpitch softball in the greater Tri-Cities. Leagues are built around girls playing with friends and having fun, as well as learning the game and building skills.

The TCGFSA Recreational Spring softball season runs from April through June/July. Teams are organized in leagues determined by players’ age. Each age group spans two years. Every effort is made to keep teams geographically based by school or city. Games are played at Columbia Playfield in Richland located near Richland High School.

Registration opens on February 1.

TRI-CITIES OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB

www.tricitiesoutrigger.org The Tri-Cities Outrigger Canoe Club was founded in 1998. The club practices on the Columbia River and typically attends six to seven short and long-distance races each season in the Pacific Northwest. The season starts in early April and ends in October.

Outrigger canoes feature a lateral support float known as an outrigger, which is fastened to one or both sides of the main hull. Unlike a single hulled canoe, an outrigger generates stability as a result of the distance between its hulls. Compared to other types of canoes, outrigger canoes can be quite fast, yet are also capable of being of being paddled in rougher water. The club owns 3 canoes. Each canoe holds 6 paddlers.

Interested in becoming a member of TCOCC? Newcomers are invited to come to our training location and paddle with us on all regularly scheduled days. The club practices are held at Columbia Park Marina, three days per week, on the Columbia River. Notify the club through the website and a paddler will meet with you, half an hour prior to scheduled practice, for orientation. We will ask you to fill out a liability waiver, pay a $10.00 fee for temporary insurance, and we will provide you with a paddle, instruction, and a fun day. You are welcome to paddle with us two or three times before deciding whether to become a member. No experience needed! Must be 18 years of age and know how to swim.

The Tri-City Bicycle Club (TCBC) supports all bicycling in the Tri-Cities and Mid-Columbia. The club offers several opportunities including third-Sunday rides and tours with an emphasis on the joy and adventure of cycling. Riders of any ability level are welcome. TCBC encourages developing bicycling skills but is not a competitive organization. Third Sunday of the month organized rides are scheduled year-round and are open to any rider wearing a bicycle helmet. It is our policy never to leave anyone behind or stranded. The club encourages bicycle riding for recreation, better health, and transportation. TCBC supports its members and the community by holding and supporting recreational rides and social events. The club is an active advocate for the safety and interests of bicyclists and helps conduct bicycle safety programs for adults and children including the Benton Franklin Safe Kids Coalition bike rodeo.

www.tricitydogparks.org The Tri-City Dog Park Society was founded to promote, establish, and maintain off-leash dog parks in our community.

Since 2005, we have raised community awareness of dog parks, held demonstration dog parks, and raised funds to help open the first off-leash dog park in the Tri-Cities area. We also worked with the City of Richland Parks and Public Facilities to open a temporary dog park at Badger Mountain Community Park while planning continued for a permanent dog park.

In October 2011, our efforts were rewarded with the opening of Phase I of Paws-Abilities Place at Badger Mountain Community Park. In 2017, the park expanded to encompass the adjacent land and complete Phase II of the 5-acre park that can be seen today. The Tri-City Dog Park Society continues its efforts to maintain and enhance Paws-Abilities Place and has hopes to extend into the surrounding cities in the coming years.

TRI-CITY KART CLUB www.tckc.net Tri-City Kart Club (TCKC) offers fun and excitement for all ages. Karting is an ever-growing sport and TCKC is known for our fun and family-friendly atmosphere. The age of our competitors range from 5 years old to 70+ and anyone is welcome. TCKC takes great pride in our facility and introducing people to the fun and excitement of kart racing.

The track sports two configurations: 5/8-mile-Long Track and a 1/2-mile Short Track. During the club race season, both configurations are used in the nine race championship points battle as well as having at least two-night races during the hottest months of July and August. TCKC has been privileged to hold several National events drawing competitors from across the entire west coast. Get in contact with a TCKC Board Member to get a "guided tour" of the state-of-the-art racing facility and watch some live racing action.

www.tcrcm.com The Tri-City Radio Control Modelers (TCRCM) is an organization for individuals interested in radiocontrolled model aviation. The club is located in the Tri-City area of southeastern Washington State.

The TCRCM operates a premier r/c model aviation flying site at the Richland, WA off-road-vehicle site for its members, new student pilots, and invited guests. The number of paid-up members varies between 35 and 50 per year.

TCRCM holds AMA-sponsored and informal events, including Fun-Fly contests, Helicopter, Bi-Plane, Floatplane, Big Bird Fly-Ins, a Precision Aerobatic (Pattern) Contest, and others.

Anyone with an interest in r/c model aviation may join the TCRCM. Membership is price is currently $75.00 per year for individuals, $85.00 for family and $25.00 for juniors. Other member classes include Senior and Emeritus. All members except non-flying Emeritus must also be a current member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA).

If Parks and Recreation cancels an activity, participants will be notified, and a full refund will automatically be issued. A participant-initiated refund for classes and activities must be requested no less than three (3) business days prior to the start date and will not be issued for any value less than $5. Participantinitiated refunds will be assessed a $5 processing fee per class/activity for each person involved. Refunds take approximately 14 days to process. Refunds for VISA and MasterCard transactions will be credited to the same card used in the original transaction.

City will use its best effort to provide the facility at an acceptable level of service consistent with that provided to all park users.

Outdoor Cancellation Policy All event cancellations must be made in writing.

Cancellations made 14+ days prior to the event date receive a full refund of the agreed hourly rental fee.

Cancellations made 7–13 days prior to the event date receive 50% of the agreed hourly rental fee. Cancellations made 0-6 days prior to the event date receive no refund of the agreed hourly rental fees. Damage deposit refunded in full if cancelled prior to the event. Administration fee is non-refundable (admin fee only pertains to Special Event Agreements).

Sports Concussion and Head Injuries A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI— caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells. Medical providers may describe a concussion as a “mild” brain injury because concussions are usually not life-threatening. Even so, the effects of a concussion can be serious.
