The Great Pumpkin Patch Trick or Treat Trail Pumpkin Decorating Hay Rides Moon Bounces Come out and celebrate the pumpkin season at the Great Pumpkin Patch two-day event. For just $5 per person, you will get an all-inclusive pass to enjoy a hay ride, moon bounces, face painting, a petting zoo, pony rides, pumpkin decorating, and so much more. Don’t forget to bring your best candy-collecting bag and hop on the Trick or Treat Trail to meet-n-greet with your favorite cartoon, superhero, or movie characters. If candy is still not enough, visit the concession area for some tasty treats. You may also pick a pumpkin of your choice from our pumpkin patch for a small fee.

Ages: All ages, a paying adult must accompany participants under 16 years.

Hi, I’m Brian Campbell the new Park Naturalist at the Catoctin Creek Nature Center!

Being able to explore and work at Catoctin Creek is a dream come true! I’ve been working as a Park Naturalist for the last eight years and I can’t wait to continue and share my enthusiasm and sense of wonder with Frederick County. The nature center will be packed with interactive exhibits highlighting native species and will provide an opportunity for all ages to discover the wild within.

The natural beauty of Catoctin Creek will be highlighted through stream explorations, canoe excursions, and habitat restoration projects. Hikes through the forest and fields are waiting to be discovered. Featured programs will include raptor encounters, insect investigations, family camp outs, and green minded initiatives.

Adventure and excitement at Catoctin Creek Nature Center will be your opportunity to get outside and discover!

Little Nature Explorers

This program is created for infants! With baby in a backpack or “pouch”, the park naturalist will take parents on a leisurely walk in the park to help baby discover nature. They will use their sense of sight, smell, and touch. Older siblings are welcome, but need to be registered also.

Survival Skills

Come and learn different animal survival techniques and how a predator is always on the lookout for its prey. Turtle Talk

How about some “in-your-face” action with the land and aquatic turtles at the nature center? Feed them, watch their funny walk and amazing swimming styles, discover how they approach other turtles, and learn how they use their neck as a tool. Create a beautiful leaf-shaped bird bath using a few simple tools, concrete and real leaves as our forms. Our first session will consist of a short hike to locate our modeling leaf, sand-casting your leaf and spreading the concrete. Once the concrete has cured, we will meet again to remove the leaf from the concrete, seat it, and add concrete washes of color. This fun activity is suitable for all ages; children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Siblings are welcome to work together on one bird bath!

Rose Hill Manor Rose Hill Manor, the retirement home of Thomas Johnson, Maryland’s first elected Governor, serves as a hands-on history museum for children of all ages. The property features a Manor House, icehouse, log cabin, blacksmith shop, carriage collection and two barns. Various theme tours are available. This environmental park contains one of Maryland's strongest springs, from which 3.25 million gallons of water may flow per day. A nature center and many local historical structures such as the 20 foot high historic lime kilns are present to make your visit more memorable.

Abrakadoodle presents Kids on Canvas, a unique art program that teaches children ages 3 to 12 about painting on a variety of canvas surfaces with acrylics. 5 league, with teams of up to 10 players. Jersey and flag belts will be provided. All games will be played at Utica Park Field #1 on Saturdays, game times TBA. Come out and join the exciting Middle School Volleyball League! Students in grades 6-8th will learn basic volleyball skills, play in six games against other county school teams, participate in a tournament and have fun. Middle Potomac We will be riding the Potomac current from Brunswick south past Point of Rocks to the mouth of the Monocacy River near Dickerson, MD. This is an excellent trip for first time paddlers and those that love wildlife. The river along this section is usually teeming with wildlife and quite possibly we’ll spot a bald eagle or two.

Visit Rose Hill Manor for a special look at the role of travel and transportation in the development of the American colonies and the growth of Frederick. Refresh with a bowl of ice cream and wander back in time with a stroll through the antique car show.

The Fiber Arts Series provides an introduction to various textile arts and processing techniques. Classes focus on traditional fiber arts including spinning wool, dying, and felting. Classes are geared toward those who have a beginning or continuing interest in textile production and arts. Classes held the 2nd Tuesday of each month through October. Sign up for all or just one of these classes. Pre-registration is required.

Fiber Arts Series

Students will be using both the immersion and hand painting methods of dyeing wool yarn and fiber using commercial acid dyes. Students will enjoy discovering the variety of color you can get from the dye pot. We’ll start with the basic solid color and then create an array of color designs using variations of this method. We’ll use the hand painting method to create designs, patterns and drawings on a variety of ‘canvases’ and discuss uses. Fiber and yarn will be provided, or you may bring your own. Yarn can be any natural color from white to light grey. Types of fibers that can be used with this dye are; wool, alpaca, angora, llama. Spinning Wheel Basics

An Introduction to Spinning. Whether you are a first time spinner or would like a refresher. In this class, we will go over the parts of a wheel, styles of wheels, the basics to spinning, carding the fiber and how ergonomics and expectations play a part in the joy of spinning. This course is designed for the beginner or early novice student of the guitar.

Students will learn the fundamentals of playing the instrument, with an emphasis on Rock & Roll styling (from the roots of the genre to its newest expressions).

Instruction will include fingering exercises, open string and movable chord forms and positioning, strumming and rhythm patterns, and scales and soloing. Students will also be introduced to guitar tablature and the ability to read music. Students are encouraged to select specific songs they want to learn to play for study examples during the course. Students must supply their own guitar (and amplification if playing an electric guitar).

Belly Dancer - Beginner

This is where the foundations of belly dance and a health posture are taught.

The classes focus on developing flexibility and learning how to move the parts of the body which are often ignored in day to day living. This level introduces a warm up, variety of body isolations and skills including hip and arm movements, shimmies and steps. Music and rhythms of belly dance will be introduced. Group improvisation plus if time permits a specific choreography will be taught. No special clothing or shoes needed. Recommended some kind of hip scarf.

Fencing is a fast pace, exciting sport featured in every Olympic Games since 1896. It also has a long history of good sportsmanship and etiquette. In this 8 week program students will learn basic footwork and skills with the saber. The course is intended for students with no prior fencing experience with the saber.

A fun, fast moving introduction to tennis for toddler and their parents. We use smaller nets and racquets and large foam tennis balls that will help your little ones learn hand-eye coordination and balance.

This energizing 8-week program incorporates high/ low impact aerobics and cardio kickboxing for a total body workout. A strengthening and stretching component includes the use of free weights and stability ball.

Centerville Recreation Center, 3601 Carriage Hill Dr., Frederick: From Frederick, take Rt. 270 South to Rt. 80 East. Cross over Rt. 355 and continue for approximately 1 mile. Turn left onto Carriage Hill Drive. School will be on your right. Rec Center entrance is located at the North end of the school.

Deer Crossing Recreation Center, 10601 Finn Dr., New Market: I-70 E towards Baltimore, at Exit #62 turn left on MD 75 toward Libertytown. Turn left at the 1st stop light on MD 144. After passing through New Market turn right on Boyers Mill Rd. Go approx. 1 mile, turn left on Finn Dr. (Summerfield Subdivision).

The Recreation Center is at the back of Deer Crossing Elementary School.

Emmitsburg Community Center, 300 S. Seton Ave., Emmitsburg: Take 15 N. Turn left on S. Seton Ave. Center is on left next to Emmitsburg Elementary.

Fountain Rock Park/Nature Center, 8516 Fountain Rock Ct., Walkersville: US 15 N approx.

2 miles outside the Frederick City Limits. Turn right on Biggs Ford Rd. Go approx. 1 mile.

Turn right on Fountain Rock Rd, park is on the left.

Green Valley Elementary, 11501 Fingerboard Road, Monrovia: Take I-70 E/US-40 East.

Merge onto MD-75 S/Green Valley Rd. via EXIT 62 toward Monrovia/Hyattstown. Turn RIGHT onto MD-75/Baldwin Rd. Turn LEFT onto MD75/Green Valley Rd. Turn SLIGHT LEFT onto Fingerboard Rd./MD-75/MD-80. Continue to follow Fingerboard RD/MD-80 school will be on right.

Health Department, 50 Montevue Ln, Frederick, MD: Head northwest on I-270 N and continue onto US-15 N, Take exit 14 for Rosemont Ave. Turn right at Rosemont Ave. Take the 3rd left onto Montevue Ln. Health Department will be on left.

I-70 Golf Center, 8400 E. Patrick St., Frederick: Follow Patrick St. east out of Frederick.

Crossover I-70 and go through one light.

The Golf Center will be on the left before the bridge.

Libertytown Elementary, 11820 Liberty Road, Libertytown, MD: Head northwest on I-270 N and continue onto US-15 N. Take exit 17 to merge onto MD-26 E/Liberty Rd toward MD-194/Libertytown/Walkersville. Slight right at Liberty Rd. Continue straight onto MD-26 E/Liberty Rd. School on left.

Middletown Cooking Studio, 7628 Coblentz Rd., Middletown, Follow direction to Middletown Community Park. Studio is next to Baseball/Softball fields.

Middletown Middle, 100 High St, Middletown.

Take Rt. 270 N, to Rt. 15 N. Take exit Rt. 40 W (exit #13B). Continue on Rt. 40 approx. 5 miles.

Turn right onto High Street to school.

West Winds Tennis Center, 11411 Gas House Pk., New Market: Take I-70 East toward Mt. Airy to Exit 62 (New Market).

Turn right on Route 75 (North) and take a left the second time you come to Old New London Road (it does a “U”). Take a right on Gas House Pike and go less than 1 mile to San Andrew Drive and turn left. The center is immediately on your left.

Register Early Early program registration is encouraged since roster size is limited. Registrations are accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Pre-registration required unless otherwise indicated.

Registration Confirmation Confirmation will be sent via e-mail. Otherwise your cancelled check or credit card statement is your receipt. You will be notified if there is a problem processing your registration or if the program is cancelled. Please make a note of your program start date.

Refund Policy If you want to withdraw from a program call 301600-2936. All requests for refunds must be made 2-weeks prior to the start of the program. A $4 processing fee will be charged for each participant per program refunded. All refund requests must be approved by the Recreation Superintendent.

Refunds will be issued according to the original method of payment. Registrations for trips that require pre-purchased tickets are not refundable.

Returned Checks A $25 fee will be charged for checks returned for non-payment.

Age Policy Program participants must be the advertised age for a program before the program ends. All age requirements are set to benefit the participants and to make the instruction consistent and safe.

Discipline The Division has a discipline policy for program participants. In the event the participant is asked to leave a program/facility, no refund will be issued.

Alcohol Policy Please remember that we strive to have a family atmosphere on our trips. If you choose to drink alcohol while on one of our trips please do so responsibly and make arrangements to have a designated driver for your trip home from the bus drop off area.

Program Cancellations/ Weather Related Closures Please see your instructor on the first day of your program for a schedule. If there is an exception, you will be informed by the Parks and Recreation staff on the program schedule. If you are not sure whether a program will be held, call our program cancellation line 301-600-6291. During inclement weather, outdoor programs may be cancelled. Every effort will be made to makeup missed classes. Refunds will not be granted for rescheduled classes that are missed due to conflicts with personal schedules. The Division may cancel a program for any reasonable cause.
