Cicarella aims to keep seat in Senate

State Sen. Paul Cicarella has announced his intention to run for a second term.

The Republican lawmaker represents the 34th District, which includes Cicarella Durham, East Haven, North Haven, Wallingford and North Branford.

An example of the crazy expenditures included in the BOE budget is the proposed new building across the street from the high school.

It has many labels, including storage building, shell of a building, and fieldhouse. But this building would require the same facilities that are in the high school, such as mechanical systems, hot and cold water, sinks and toilets, and a heating system, as well as an oversized electrical system to support lighting the adjacent field.

This “stadium project” is a big want, not a need. And it will add substantial fixed costs to future BOE budgets, and very high per-pupil costs.

Up until this year, the State of Connecticut only allowed for 1 percent to be retained for such purposes. The BOE, by doing so, is hoping to avoid the possibility of having to approach the towns of Durham and of Middlefield for emergency funding, while keeping their budget fat.

The New Haven region’s manufacturing companies have joined together to launch the South-Central Connecticut Manufacturing Industry Partnership. The collective’s focus is manufacturing because of the density of small- to medium-sized organizations in the region.

With over 25 manufacturing leaders actively engaged in the process, three areas of focus for the industry were identified: building a sustainable pipeline of talent, promoting the manufacturing industry, and addressing cost competitiveness. Industry action teams are working to address the key areas.

The South-Central manufacturing partnership is an industry-led group formed from the Governor’s Workforce Council that follows the NextGen Regional Sector Partnerships model. This initiative, in partnership with the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, Middlesex Community College, and Workforce Alliance, helps bring awareness to the resources and workforce available for manufacturing companies.

In addition to the work being done by the South-Central manufacturing partnership, the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce will host its 4th Annual Manufacturing Career Fair, presented by Ulbrich Stainless Steels and Special Metals, Wednesday, May 18, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., at the Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford. Powder Ridge to add Halloween attraction A New England Halloween tradition has found a new home on the slopes of Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort, as Graveyard Productions brings its trademark thrills and chills to another Connecticut institution.

Offering seasonal Halloween attractions at locations across Connecticut since 1991, Graveyard Productions has grown to become New England’s largest haunted attraction. Now, it’s set to fully integrate its maze-like path into Powder Ridge’s mountain topography, requiring a trip up the ski lift to begin the journey.

Ernie Romegialli, the founder of Graveyard Productions, said this is “a homecoming in a very real sense.”

Powder Ridge has roots dating to the 1950s, and its revisioning in 2014 as an affiliate of Portland’s Brownstone Exploration & Discovery Park has made it a yearround destination.

Adding an exciting autumnal element will further enhance the resort’s offerings.

“Halloween has always been my favorite holiday,” Powder Ridge CEO Sean Hayes said.

“Therefore, we always knew it would be one of our prominent mountain experiences. We’ve been working with Graveyard Productions for almost two years to ensure a one-of-a-kind haunted experience.”

The spooky season at Powder Ridge is scheduled to begin Sept. 30. The Graveyard Productions attraction will run weekends through the end of October. Tickets will be available starting Sept. 1.

Our library is raising money to host a community mural as part of Wallingford’s 350th anniversary. The mural will be a collaborative project celebrating the people who live in our town. Local artist Rashmi Talpade painted a giant tree in the library and will help residents create decorative “leaves” with images of themselves and their families. Most images will be photographs, but self-portraits in other mediums will also be welcome.

As the leaf-shaped images are created, community participants will see them affixed to the tree and watch the development of the mural, akin to a tree sprouting leaves. We are seeking $5,000 to cover the costs.

The Wallingford Public Library is excited to showcase this beautiful, visual reflection of the people who make up our community.

“Mary Abrams has been a champion for working families across our state,” Hochadel stated. “She delivered a $15 minimum wage, Paid Family Leave, and helped families across our region recover from the pandemic. I wish her all the best with prayers for her health.”

Hochadel faces Republican Gwen Samuel, an activist on parental choice and family issues. Samuel filed paperwork with the state to establish an exploratory committee in March and last week told the Record-Journal she was refiling as a candidate.

Hochadel earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of New Haven and began working for Pfizer in 1984. After 18 years, she began pursuing teaching degrees and taught science at technical schools across the state.

Hochadel’s union involvement led her to become president of the statewide union that represents 30,000 public sector healthcare and education workers. Her experience has brought her face to face with the state legislature while serving on the negotiating team for the state employee bargaining agent coalition.

“I know the process of how things happen in the Capitol, and I want to use that experience to hit the ground running to deliver results for families across the 13th district,” she said. “I know the issues, I talk to workers every day about their hardships and what the state could do to make their lives a little easier.”
