Family hosts relatives who fled Ukraine

SOUTHINGTON — A bomb strike across the street convinced Iryna Hizhytsa that the safety of her children demanded she leave her home in Odesa, Ukraine.

The port city on the shores of the Black Sea had been a refuge for Hizhytsa’s family a century earlier when they fled the turmoil of the

Russian Revolution. Now Odesa was battered by Russian missiles, flooded with refugees from the front lines in eastern Ukraine and made nearly unlivable by inflation and unemployment.

“It’s kind of hard to stay in a place where bombs are flying all around,” Hizhytsa said through her daughter Alexandra Anderson, who was translating.

Blair Gianatti, owner of Endless Sweets, said this is her first year participating in the event because it is the first time it has been held since she opened in town. Gianatti has been in business since 2019, but just got a location at 69 West Main Street, Plantsville, in February.

“People seem to really love it,” Gianatti said about Taste of Southington. “They are really excited that it’s coming back. It’s nice for the town to do. It gets people out and is good exposure for the restaurants in town.”

by Judith Kirchner, who brings some 25 years of manufacturing and management experience.

PZC considers subdivision for Lazy Lane in Southington

SOUTHINGTON – A developer is looking to subdivide land on the corner of Curtiss Street and Lazy Lane for a five-lot subdivision.

Imperial Development LLC’s proposal would divide the 8acre property at 540 Lazy Lane into seven parcels. Five lots would be buildable while two wouldn’t be for development. The plan was discussed at the July 19 Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

Imperial Development’s principal is local builder Nathan Primus, according to state records.

Sev Bovino, an engineer representing Primus, said the land is mostly open field with some wooded areas.

Plans presented to the commission show two lots on Curtiss Street and three on Lazy Lane. The property surrounds a house at 520 Lazy Lane.

Peter Santago, a commission member, described the corner as a landmark. “It’s a pretty iconic property in town,” he said. “When you go by there, you know where you are when you see it.”

Those comments didn’t lead to any in opposition to the plan, however.

“People can do what they want with their property.”

Santago said.

The commission did delay a vote on the subdivision since there’s disagreement over whether the developer must build sidewalks as a requirement for approval.

Bovino said legal precedent is that a builder on an existing road doesn’t have to make improvements such as adding sidewalks.

“If you build a new road for a subdivision, it’s your responsibility to put the sidewalks in. If it’s on an existing thoroughfare, sidewalks (can’t be imposed),” he said.

Bob Hammersley, commission chairman, said he wants to refer the question to Town Attorney Alex Ricciardone. He hopes to receive an answer in time to make a decision at the August meeting.

A tribute to Jim Senich, late of Southington

The smile, the laugh and the crowded kitchen table. The recliner in the living room, too, with the foot rest that kicked out, and the Sporting News folded in half and that big band book he read one summer at the Indian Town cottage in Old Saybrook.

“Funny,” I thought, being a kid. “Funny that a sports guy is reading about my Grampa Joe’s music and not about Grover Cleveland Alexander striking out Tony Lazzeri in

What I remember most about Jim Senich, and will forever hear now that he’s gone, is The Voice. The radio voice, the talk show voice, the play-by-play voice, the emcee voice. A sweet tenor stream that rippled with the comic and deftly plumbed the tragic. The voice of a storyteller.

I’m thinking of this the day after Jim’s passing on Thursday evening, July 21 at age 83. I’m sitting on a bench on Main Street in Southampton, Long Island, where pretty people preen and, if you wait long enough, someone famous will walk by. (Hey! Howard Stern!)

I got my sportswriting start in this town some 30 years ago, just as Mr. Senich got his years before that in Southington. We were transplants and we thrived. And we gained a little local celebrity, though not of the sort that gains you glances on Main Street Southampton, unless maybe you get mistaken for Bob Crane.

Time has confirmed what I always believed: Mr. Senich had big-league radio chops.

Quality of voice, cadence, deep and ready well of anecdote and history. I listen to Major League Baseball games, talk shows. Jim Senich could have hung with any of those guys. Likely all he lacked was the big ego.

“Everybody in Southington stayed with it,” she said.

“People in town consistently stayed with it.”

She described a recent medical supplies drive as “awesome” and benefiting Ukrainians with critical items that are now difficult to find in that country.

One of the artists is Olga Tsyfanski who came to the United States in 2008 and lives in Avon. She’s learning the elaborate embroidery that’s seen on traditional Ukrainian clothes and has transposed those regional designs to bracelets and other items. Tsyfanski plans to use any proceeds from art sales to help fund critical supplies and military equipment like body armor and tactical gear for soldiers.

SOUTHINGTON- Nancy (Lynch) Dominello, RN, of Southington, beloved wife of Salvatore J. Dominello, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at Yale New Haven Hospital. Though her will and mind never succumbed, her body lost the battle to cancer.

She was very thankful for all of the healthcare professionals who helped her through her illness.

Nancy was born in New Milford, CT on October 31, 1959 and was the daughter of the late Robert and Anna (Strelez) Lynch.

Nancy was a caring registered nurse for over 30 years, until last year when she retired to focus on her illness. In her free time, Nancy loved to cook, bake Christmas cookies, read, do puzzles, plant flowers and cruise backroads of CT with the top down in their BMW Z4 discovering new local vineyards.

Her greatest pleasure however was going to the shore where she hoped to someday retire and “live on the water.” Nancy fought hard right to the very end and never wavered on being the “strong one” of the family. Obituaries James J. Senich SOUTHINGTONJames J. Senich, 83, of Southington and formerly of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at Southington Care Center.

He had been the loving husband of Ellen (Lucas) Senich for 35 years. James was born in Waterbury on March 31, 1939 to the late Dmitri “Mitzy” and Mary Kay (Linnane) Senich. He attended Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury and excelled in athletics before proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves. He attended Leland Powers School of Radio in Boston and soon after began a career in newspaper and radio that would last for over four decades beginning in 1960 at WLAD in Danbury. The first record he ever spun was “Only You” from The Platters.

He went on to work at several stations including WNAB (Bridgeport), WGCH (Greenwich), WBIS (Bristol), WNTY (Southington), WWCO (Waterbury), WATR (Waterbury). He had a career in newspaper that was equally as stellar, serving as sportswriter and later editor of the Southington Observer, a newspaper he was with from 1975 to 1988 before transitioning over to radio full time until 2001 when he was the Manager of Communications for the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch until his retirement in 2011. He also taught broadcasting from the mid to late 1980s at Briarwood College in Southington. Jim was honored with several

awards including the Big Apple Award for Education Coverage (1982), The New England Press Association Award for Best Sports Column (1983), Southington Chamber of Commerce Award (1983), the District 5 Officials Award (1992), the Kiwanis Club Merit Award (1984), the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Service Award (1999), the Waterbury Olympian Club Merit Award (2000), the Sacred Heart High School Distinguished Alumni Award (2001) and the CIAC Basketball Merit Award (2004). He is a member of the SHS Baseball Hall of Fame (1982), the Connecticut Scholastic and Collegiate Softball Hall of Fame (1994), the Teikyo Post University Hall of Fame (2001) and the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2007). Jim loved sports, especially the Boston Celtics and New York Giants football but there was no team he loved more than the St. Louis Cardinals. His favorite player was by far Stan “The Man” Musual. In fact,

Jim could recite Musual’s lifetime batting average right up until his final days - .331. Above all his career accomplishments, Jim will be remembered mostly for his love for his children and grandchildren, his faith, his selflessness and genuine kindness.

He is also survived by his first wife Patricia Senich of Southington and 3 nephews, Chuck, Jack and Andrew Senich.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Richard Senich. Edward S. Silva SOUTHINGTON- Edward S. Silva, 74, of Southington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at MidState Medical Center, after a brief illness. He had been the loving husband of Patricia (Brenker) Silva for 32 years. Edward was born on February 19, 1948, in New Bedford, MA, to the late Edward P. and Helen (Colyar) Silva. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, SPS Squadron, Military Police, stationed at the RAF Base in Alconbury, England, during the Vietnam War. Ed worked for the City of Meriden in many different capacities including police dispatcher, and engineering and purchasing.

He then moved to Palm Bay, FL, for 13 years, where he worked at Holmes Regional Medical Center as a helicopter dispatcher and at the Harris Corporation, eventually returning to CT to be closer to his family.

In addition to his wife Pat, he is survived by his son, Edward K. Silva and his wife Melissa of North Haven and one stepson, Frank James III and his wife Susan of San Diego, CA, 4 grandchildren, Ashley Balogh of Meriden, Brendan and Zachary Silva, both of VA and Madison Silva of North Haven, 4 step-grandchildren, Jessica, Samantha and Alex James, all of San Diego, CA and Joseph Alfano of North Haven, 3 great-grandsons, many nieces and nephews and a large loving extended

As part of the summer RAMP program, Middle School of Plainville students created wooden toy ducks equipped with rotating wheels, artwork, and a valuable lesson in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics).
