Health director talks coronavirus By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
Dealing with coronavirus will be a marathon rather than a sprint, the Plainville-Southington Health District director Shane Lockwood told the Southington Town Council Monday night. He expected to be dealing with effects from the contagious virus for months, although he’s hoping the pandemic is over sooner. “I plan on dealing with this for the rest of the year,” Lockwood said.

Councilor Jim Morelli asked how long the coronavirus might remain in the state: “How fast does it go away? Does it linger? Can you get it again and again?” Lockwood said experience with the H1N1 and SARS viruses showed that the diseases hit hard the first time around but that subsequent outbreaks were weaker. “I fully expect waves based on historical trends,” Lockwood said. Council considers $13.9M library plan By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
A new library won’t cost more than $13.9 million, according to Town Council Chairwoman Victoria Triano, citing the total earmarked in the town’s capital budget for the project.
Triano is among the six Republicans who form a majority on the nine-member council. Democratic council minority leader Chris Palmieri said he was willing to increase the library construction spending depending on needs. The first estimates for a new

Meriden firefighters helped Southington crews fight the fire while Plainville and Cheshire fire crews covered the rest of the town.

Arc has its main building at 201 W. Main St. in Plantsville. Before the expansion, Gibney said they’d have to go elsewhere to hold programs and had little parking. The grant-funded expansion gave them more room in the Plantsville building as well as much more parking. “We couldn’t fit everybody here. With the expansion, we’re able to use yoga nights here, our advocacy meetings here,” Gibney said.

Kennedy named St. Paul football coach

BRISTOL – Southington native Chris Kennedy will take over as the head football coach of St. Paul Catholic High School for the 2020 fall season replacing long time coach Jude Kelly who has retired after 46 years of coaching high school football in Connecticut.
Kelly said, “Chris is a great leader; a hard worker; he understands and can relate to the players he coaches. I wish him well and am confident the players he coaches will learn valuable life skills and lessons on the football field that they will then represent positively in the St. Paul classrooms and community.”
Kennedy says, “I couldn’t be more excited or proud to be the next head football coach at St. Paul. My goal is to take the next steps in our progression to being a perennial contender within our division and the NVL. I’ve spent well over two decades preparing for this opportunity and am beyond ready to get to work.”
On March 7, the ShopRite Nutmeg State Games hosted the 7th Annual High School Football Weight Lifting Competition presented by the Connecticut National Guard at New Britain High School. Muffin factory offers lots of unusual flavors By Bailey Wright Record-Journal staff
You can count on about two dozen muffin flavors any day, but there’s also a rotating list of unique flavors throughout the year.
The workday begins at 3:30 a.m., but the warm buttery smell of freshly baked muffins lasts all day at the New England Muffin Factory. Wendy Stocking is usually the first baker in, getting muffins ready for the 7 a.m. rush and any morning orders on the schedule. The business makes an average of 264 muffins each morning. The New England Muffin Factory, 1678 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, opened about 12 years ago. Owner Aurelia Fedak said her husband started the company to fill wholesale orders.
Blueberry holds up as the shop’s most popular muffin choice — but even blueberry comes with choices. There is traditional whole wheat blueberry, pineapple blueberry, lemon blueberry and more. Fedak and Stocking say they use all-natural and fresh ingredients.

The shop has samples out every day too, so you can try a flavor you’re not so sure you’d like. Employee Maria Scricca said sometimes the flavors can be deceivingly good.
“It took me the longest time to try some of the muffins; like the peanut butter one I was like ‘oh, I don't know' and my niece would come and get one and I tried it and I really like it,” she said. The staff loves baking, so the muffins aren’t the only thing changing. Sometimes the array of baked goods will feature different kinds of Danishes, cinnamon buns, cookies and more. Last week, one special was oatmeal cream pie. Southington resident Melanie Torres said she loves the muffins and breakfast sandwiches, but hasn’t been able to eat them recently due to Celiac disease. However, she said she feels like a lifelong friend when she stops in. “The owner Aurelia and Wendy are the kindest and so fun and light. Great way to start your day, for sure,” Torres said.

Safety ideas hit brick wall
Since 2017, vehicles have struck the building four times, and Moran said she’s been raising the issue for two years without satisfaction. There have also been accidents with cars hitting poles and signs on the corner.

In a recent article Kevin Nursick, spokesman for the DOT, didn’t offer any ideas, except to rule out guardrails and concrete barriers. That leaves Moran in the unfortunate situation of trying to deal with an issue that is at least partly to blame on road design. That doesn’t seem fair. The state, with its army of engineers and other experts, should take another look right away.
With the town considering a new or upgraded public library this is a good time to look at how Southington’s library got started and ideas around how libraries fund these projects. According to well known history, Southington's first attempts at starting a library had limited success. The first try, in 1797, was a private subscription library and its was kaput by 1847. There were other small, private lending libraries for awhile, but it wasn’t until the 1890s that interest in what resembles a modern version of a public library began to gain steam.The town authorized a library in 1896 a collection of 1,300 books was put together and housed in town hall.
Whether some other kind of barrier would work — perhaps some of those yellow barrels you see on major highways, which are filled or partly filled with sand, or maybe an earthen berm, which could be dressed up with plantings — is a matter for discussion. Thankfully, at least one official is sympathetic to Moran’s plight. Southington Town Council Vice Chairman Tom Lombardi said he’d be investigating what the town can do to stop such accidents.
That’s when Lucius V. Walkley, owner of the local Pultz & Walkley Company stepped up with a better option. He offered a challenge grant of $5,000 if other donors would chip in the same amount.This goal was soon met. (These events refer to the former library building now occupied by the Southington Historical Society.)

Moran said she’s left with no choice but to put up strong concrete posts between the intersection and her building. You can’t blame her for wanting to better protect patrons of the Hop Haus and the yoga and wellness studio. But Moran should not have to deal with this problem on her own.
How does philanthropy figure into funding a library? There’s a striking example in Bangor, Maine, where in 2013 author Stephen King and his wife, Tabitha, pledged to donate $3 million
contingent upon the library raising $6 million from other sources. The Kings previously had donated $2.5 million for a new wing for the library in the 1990s. They later replaced marble steps at the facility’s entrance.
The American Library Association urges all libraries to “have a gift and donation policy that clearly describes the terms of acceptance and outlines all steps from the evaluation process to the acknowledgement letter.”
Just north of Bangor, In Orono (where the University of Maine, King’s alma mater, is located) the couple kicked off the Orono Library building campaign with $50,000 in 2007.
Recent reporting on the status of plans for Southington’s new library says the cost won’t exceed $13.9 million, the amount earmarked in the town’s capital budget for the project. Earlier estimates for a new or renovated library were both nearly $20 million. The council is scheduled to meet March 23 in executive session to discuss.
Clearly, giving a building fund a pile of start up money and issuing a challenge is an effective and fun way to get the community behind a project. A couple of years ago, Inside Philanthropy published an analysis on why more big donors aren’t giving to public libraries. The article says hospitals, public parks and universities are much more likely to attract major gifts partly due to well structured strategic fundraising plans. Several other sources discuss how public libraries, over the decades, have come to rely more and more on public funding. A recent research report by The Wilmington Trust reviewed public library trends and how library foundations factor into the mix. “Library fundraising foundations are an important tool for public libraries, and they should be focused on a diversified fundraising plan that also includes strategies around major gifts, planned giving, legacy societies, and a strategic technology plan,” the research report stated.
In news reports, so far, opportunities for donors as part of the financing strategy have not been mentioned and looking at the library website, there’s no clear link to such an opportunity (except for the Friends of the Library.) There’s a library professionals’ newsletter called In the Library with a Lead Pipe. It says donors want to be asked and basically that’s what it takes to get donations. Solicit donations and they will come – in fact, Lead Pipe says people want to be asked and are insulted not to be – there can even be a bit of competition amongst donors. Whether Southington has a philanthropist who will step up or whether the financing plan for the new library will include donors and related gift-giving strategies remains to be seen. But as the experts say, it doesn’t hurt to ask.

CIAC cancels tournaments, citing COVID-19 concerns CHESHIRE — The CIAC cancelled its winter scholastic tournaments on Tuesday. The CIAC made the announcement amid mounting concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. “After much consideration and consultation, the CIAC has made a difficult decision to cancel all remaining CIAC winter tournament games,” said CIAC executive director Glenn Lungarini at a hastily called press conference Tuesday morning at CIAC headquarters in Cheshire. The announcement came on the heels of a second confirmed case of COVID-19 in Connecticut as well as amid concerns raised or actions taken by member school districts.
Tuesday’s announcement by the CIAC affects tournament basketball and hockey games and state boys swimming meets. Winter championships have already been decided in wrestling, indoor track and gymnastics. This is the second health-related phenomenon this school year to affect high school sports. Last fall, amid an outbreak in mosquito-borne Eastern equine encephalitis, a number of school districts moved their sporting events to daylight hours. The EEE outbreak, however, did not cancel any events, and the state tournaments went on as planned. -- Record-Journal report
