SOUTHINGTON — Changes are under consideration for the library building committee to bring it into compliance with charterrequired minority representation rules.

WEST HARTFORD — Prior to winning his 500th game Monday night, Southington girls basketball coach Howie Hewitt was at the scorer’s table, keeping the book for the junior varsity team. “Someone has to do it,” joked Hewitt, prior to the Lady Knights’ 5637 Central Connecticut Conference win over Northwest Catholic.

The 10-member committee has seven Republicans, too many according to town statutes. No more than two-thirds of such a committee can be from one party. Republicans hold a majority on the Town Council and appointed the building committee’s members. Most have backgrounds in the trades. Jim Morelli, a Republican council member, is chairman of the committee. Two members of the committee are Democrats and one is unaffiliated.

Plainville wrestler Jaxsen Bailey, left, is heading to Estonia next month to compete in the Tallinn Open, a tournament featuring young grapplers from 30 countries. Bailey, who is 11, will be one of just 50 wrestlers representing the United States at the competition, which will take place March 24 to 26. Bailey is pictured with younger brother Logan after the siblings collected first-place medals at a recent tournament.

Alex Ricciardone, the town attorney, said the arrangement needs to change to meet town statutes. The committee could expand and include a non-Republican or a Republican could be removed from the group. See Library, A2
