Candidates discuss abortion decision, Safe Harbor law

The Record-Journal recently polled area candidates running for state House and Senate for their views on the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe vs. Wade, as well as earlier passage of the state’s “Safe Harbor” law.

Candidates were asked the following:

Volunteers caring for 31 cats, dog taken from residence

SOUTHINGTON – Animal control workers and volunteers are helping to care for 31 cats and a dog that were brought to the shelter from a home recently.

Officials released few details about the home from which the animals were taken, saying there’s an ongoing investigation.

We decided to opt for a test that would let us know for sure and we’re relieved when the results came back negative.

The doctors then said it was likely the baby would be born deformed. We waited and as the fetus developed and they soon eliminated that prognosis.

Then we were told that it was likely that the baby had a heart defect. Again we waited and the heart was fine.

Finally, just before the 4th of July the doctors told us that they had discovered fluid in the baby’s lungs, and if the fluid remained, the lungs wouldn’t develop. They said they could attempt to drain the fluid, but there was no See Candidates, A3

There is no Constitutional right to abortion and there is a real matter for debate about when life begins and whether or not the rights of the unborn are as valid as the rights of the mother. We should really have adults who can handle common sense and mutual respect discussing and debating what our policies should look like, not political manipulators and activists willing to lie to gin up their own base.

CT Community Colleges Get Students Back to Class This Fall With Enhanced Services, Flexible Schedules Community colleges have long been the most accessible, affordable higher education option in Connecticut.

But mirroring national higher education trends, many students had to put their education on hold in the last few years. The community colleges have invested in ways to help begin, restart or finish college.

Many students’ lives changed considerably during the pandemic, according to Michael Buccilli, Assistant Vice President of Student Success Management for the 12 Connecticut community colleges. “Their families may have grown, they may have left a job or started a new business. The campuses have added services to support returning students such as Guided Pathways Advising to help re-enroll and choose the right classes; plus free wellness counseling and a new virtual platform that provides free telehealth and mental health services. Childcare, transportation assistance, food pantry access, plus dedicated veterans and bilingual staff are also on site.

Coming back may mean a part-time schedule or a short-term, non-credit program that delivers work-related credentials or skills. Health care, manufacturing and IT courses are in high demand, including certifications from Google and Amazon Web

8 ways to save on back to school shopping

Have you started back to school shopping? This year is supposed to be one of the most expensive yet for school supplies. We have just a couple weeks left of summer here in Connecticut, but I’ve already started shopping to save money.

I like to shop for the new school year over the course of a few weeks (sometimes months). Instead of shoving all of our shopping into one or two days, I shop smart by waiting for sales to make purchases.

Obituaries Raymond J. Lavoie, Sr.

Leosina Celli

SOUTHINGTONRaymond J. Lavoie, Sr., 89, of Southington, passed away on Friday, August 12, 2022 at the Southington Care Center.

He was the loving husband of the late Carmella “Millie” (Gallicchio) Lavoie.

He was born February 12, 1933 in Waterbury and was the son of the late Joseph and Rebecca (Archambault) Lavoie.

Ray was a Veteran of the Korean War serving with the US Navy. He was the manager for First National Grocery Stores throughout CT. He was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Aloysius Church for many years. He enjoyed woodworking and crafts and will be missed by his two dogs Bella & Stella.

He is survived by his children, Raymond J. Lavoie, Jr., of Plantsville, Rick Lavoie and wife Sandra of Port St. Lucy, FL, Ronald Lavoie and Daniela of Southington, Lynn DePaolo and husband Wayne of Plantsville and Lori Anne Powell and husband Steven of Southington; a sister, Claire Macdonald of Waterbury; ten grandchildren, Katelyne Lavoie, Danielle DePaolo and her fiancé Kyle Sandberg, Joshua Lavoie, Nicole Lavoie, Colby Powell, Kaylenna Powell, Kayla Philips and husband Andrew, Brittany Bouchard, Billy Integlia and John Integlia; 9 greatgrandchildren, Madeline Lavoie, Freya Spencer, Lenna Spencer, Aubrey, Norah, William, Waylon, Michael and Johnny Integlia and his longtime companion Patricia Tally. He also leaves

PLAINVILLELeosina Celli, 91, of Plainville, passed away peacefully at the Hospital of Central CT New Britain Campus on Tuesday, August 9, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. She is now reunited with her devoted husband, Elio Celli, who predeceased her.

Leosina was born on August 27, 1930 in Corvara, Italy, daughter to the late Gabrielle and Maria (Ciccone) Giuliani. In 1954, Leosina immigrated to Venezuela where she and her husband started a family and were blessed with four children. The family immigrated to the United States and settled in Plainville, where they made their forever home. Leosina, a woman of strength, courage, and determination went through many life obstacles always with a great sense of humor and optimism. Though she traveled through countries, barely able to speak or understand the languages, she always succeeded and made many friendships along the way. Leosina was a homemaker, tending to the home and raising children, but the loss of her husband found her working several jobs to support her family.

She was strong-willed and

many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Marcel, Paul, Roger and Gus and five sisters, Alice Landry, Jeanne Doucette, Theresa McVerry, Bernie Guertin and Ceil Statkevich.

Ray’s family would like to thank Dr. Ralph Prezioso, Dr. Inca Lee, the Southington Care Center and the Summit at Plantsville, for all the wonderful care given to their father over the years.

His funeral was held on Tuesday, August 16th 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St., Plantsville for a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors followed at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours were Monday from 4-7 p.m.

Above all, family was the center of her world and she found the most joy in being surrounded by her loved ones and especially her grandchildren. She will be missed sorely as her family carries on her legacy of her love, humor, optimism, and generosity.

Family and friends gathered on Friday, August 12, 2022 at the Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad Street, Plainville, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 94 Broad Street, Plainville, at 11:00 AM. Burial followed in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Plainville. Program aims to help children grieving from COVID loss

An application is required for attendance.

The Cove Center for Grieving Children is offering a free program to help youngsters who have lost a close family member, due to the pandemic, cope with the experience. “Confronting COVID” will commence in September and provide support through a variety of activities geared towards healing.

“The Cove Center for Grieving Children understands the impact COVID related deaths has had on so many families here in Connecticut.

We are here to support those families,” said Cove’s Executive Director Allison Gamber.

“We are grateful to the Brave of Heart Fund, Foundation of New York Life and Cigna for funding this new program.”

The Cove Center for Grieving Children has five locations throughout the state, including a branch in Cheshire at 1113 South Main St., Suite A. The other sites are in Guilford, New Haven, West Hartford and Meriden.

The “Confronting COVID” program will run for eight weeks and include a combination of activities. These might include music, art, dance, and peer-to-peer discussions.

Life will never be the same, but we can learn to live with grief and joy side by side.”

Town mulls buying land near park entrance SOUTHINGTON — Town leaders are considering the purchase of two undeveloped properties totaling six acres near the entrance to Panthorn Park.

Buying the land would preserve the open area around the park entrance, preventing houses from being built on the two rear lots at 425 and 429 Burritt St.

I’ve been thinking a lot about books lately because I’m trying to get rid of them.

It’s awful. I put a pile of books into a box and tape up the box and almost immediately want to undo the tape and open the box to make sure that, indeed, these are books I want to get rid of.

What’s the matter with me?

I like the idea of putting books out there, “into the

wild” as they say at bookcrossing.com. I like little libraries. And I know that things are just things, and books are things, so you can get rid of them and not suffer great loss.

But, I’ll be honest. As much as I like the idea of spreading books around that’s not why I’m trying to get rid of them. I’m trying to declutter.

And I’m certain there are lots of folks who like books, and read them, more than I

SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS

Municipal electric utility is seeking a highly skilled maintenance electrician with extensive substation experience to maintain and repair transmission and distribution class switchgear, bus-work, lightning arrestors, protective relays, insulators, switches power transformers, data circuits, controls and other related components. Must be a high school/trade school graduate and have 4 years’ experience in the maintenance and operation of electric utility substations and/or utility grade protection and control systems. Completion of a recognized four (4) year maintenance electrician apprenticeship program may substitute for the experience requirement.

Two (2) years of college-level education or advanced training in related field may substitute for two (2) years of the experience requirement. Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Connecticut and be able to obtain with 6 months of hire a valid Protective Switching and Tagging Procedure certification from CONVEX or other approved agency.
