Family farm offers a fresh take on food

POLICE PROMOTIONS

By Nicole Zappone The Citizen

A local farming family has been working hard to provide the community with fresh vegetables. The DiPalmas of North Haven, operate the Ravello Farm, located at 81 Half Mile Road. The property is about six and a half acres. Since opening in 2021, the family has brought a new source of fresh, locally grown food to the area. Available are items such

as zucchini, yellow squash, squash flowers, escarole, romaine lettuce, salad mix, radishes, bok choy, eggs, kale, beets, and more. For instance, garlic, potatoes, cucumbers, and string beans. The farmstand is inside a large barn and is open Saturday mornings. Some may know Rich DiPalma as the Italian singing teacher in town. But he’s long held an interest in gardening, too, See Farm, A4

At last week's meeting of the North Haven Board of Police Commission, four members of the North Haven Police Department were promoted. They are, from left: Sergeant Nicholas Costanzo, Lieutenant Clifford Hill, Captain Christopher Thorpe and Deputy Chief Andrew Stavrides. In a social media post announcing the promotions, the NHPD wrote of the new deputy chief, "D.C. Andrew Stavrides is a 17-year member of the NoHPD. He has served as the commanding officer of the Investigative Services Division, Uniformed Services Division, and the Professional Standards Division, Accreditation and Training. A former member of the South Central Regional SWAT Team and a POST certified Police Instructor, Stavrides has a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University, an MBA and MPA from the University of New Haven, and has attended several leadership programs including the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and the Police Executive Research Forum."

Before the farm came together, the land was a blank slate. “From the road, it looked like not much of anything, and you don’t know how far back it goes,” DiPalma said. Growing up, DiPalma said not many people drove past the road and now it seems to be much busier. With his parents living down the street, DiPalma says they often visit and he brings them fresh vegetables.

Currently, the farm helps provides food for 27 families through its CSA program. Community-supported agriculture (CSA) is a program in which a community member purchases a share of the season’s crops in the off-season. going to have a larger farm. Eventually, roosters and a chicken coop were added.

The chicken coop is home to several chickens on the Ravello Farm property. Each day, dozens of eggs are laid and are available for purchase.

“It just became a farm,” DiPalma said. Sometimes, DiPalma’s three children, Ava, 11, Petey, 9, and Donato, 6, help out with the farm chores DiPalma, 41, said people his age need a break from being constantly on the go, and with the farm, he can do that. He described working on the farm as a place where he can just think. “I just think as a culture now, we are beyond electronics,” he said.

“While I am still a teacher, this is mainly what I will do,” DiPalma said. “But if things change in the digits, I definitely see other livestock and additional items like fruit and Christmas trees. Maybe honey, maple syrup, who knows.”

“I named the farm in honor of their daughter (Marissa Adinolfi) who died,” DiPalma said. Due to her illness, Marissa was unable to travel to see her grandmother’s town in Italy. And so DiPalma went to Ravello and calling, over the phone from there, described what he saw to Marissa.

Lions’ Second Saturday Service Project set for Aug. 13 On Saturday, Aug. 13, the North Haven Lions recognize the Dog Days of August and that hunger still exists in the community. The Lions will be back at the North Haven Congregational Church, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., to restock the food banks and to seek support for the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation. As a special attraction, a Fi-

The Lions of Connecticut have been supporters of Fidelco for many of its 60plus years of training and providing guide dogs to clients where they live and work and transforming the lives of people who are blind. COVID has forced the closing of the breeding centers to the public, but the

puppies keep coming. Donations of blankets, towels, and Milk Bone Dog Biscuits (any size) for the dogs are requested. Learn more at Fidelco.org. Chamber had much to celebrate at annual meeting

Executive Director Ray Andrewsen

Party primaries are Aug. 9 Citizen report

Voters casting absentee ballots in the upcoming Aug. 9 primary need to get ballot applications soon if they are relying on the mail. Connecticut does not have no-excuse absentee voting but lawmakers did loosen restrictions earlier this year to include caregivers and commuters. The last day to pick up or request an absentee ballot is Aug. 8. All ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. on election day.

In North Haven, absentee ballots will be counted at Memorial Town Hall, 18 Church St. On the Democratic Party primary ballot in North Haven are: Secretary of the State: Stephanie Thomas, Maritza Bond Treasurer: Erick Russell, Dita Bhargava, Karen DuBoisWalton, Keith Yagaloff On the Republican Party primary ballot in North Haven are: United States Senator: Themis Klarides, Leora R. Levy, Peter Lumaj Secretary of the State: Dominic Rapini, Brock Weber, Terrie E. Wood

as much as four gallons of water. If you brush your teeth in the morning and at night, that adds up to saving 200 gallons of water a month. The same is true when you wash your hands.

Use a broom instead of a hose to clean patios, sidewalks, and driveways. Water flows from a hose at about six gallons of water a minute. If it takes 30 minutes to clean a patio or deck, using a broom saves 500 gallons of water.

The chamber would like to thank the many sponsors who supported this wonderful event.

THIS SUMMER CELEBRATE AND SURPRISE WITH...

An ongoing North Haven Conservation Commission project for 2022 has been planting trees throughout town. The Commission has purchased five white dogwoods. Two were planted on Upper State Street at Chapman/Sinoway Pond and one at Todd’s Pond Park. Two were also planted in the green at Fitch and Rock Roads in the Montowese area. The North Haven Garden Club will be developing gardens that will enhance the trees in Montowese. Last year the Conservation Commission planted three white dogwoods on the Town Green, one dedicated to the residents of North Haven who lost their lives to Covid 19. Members of the

North Haven Conservation Commission will diligently water these trees three times a week. Another project the Conservation Commission has undertaken is the purchase of ten Elm Trees through the Herbie Project, which will be planted in 2024 on Elm Street and throughout North Haven. Trees are an essential part of our infrastructure. Neighborhood trees mitigate global warming, preserve biodiversity, clean toxins from the air, prevent flooding, lower energy costs, and create a beautiful sense of space in our surroundings. What can you do to join us in your neighborhood?

• Balloons Bouquet (Our Star Product). • Trendy Balloons Decorations (Organic balloons garland, centerpieces, and more). • Surprise Boxes or Trays. • Customized Balloons. Brand and Quality Balloons, Eco-Friendly and Biodegradable. Women owned and local business.

Connecticut’s $20 million planned program would install cameras on wrong-way signs across the state which will trigger flashing lights when a wrong-way driver is detected. There have been 11 fatal wrong-way accidents this year in the state, resulting in 20 deaths, according to statistics from the the Connecticut Transportation Institute at the University of Connecticut. That’s up from three fatal wrong-way crashes in 2020 and four in 2021, according to the Institute.
