NH Fair has a little something for everyone

The North Haven Fair is back.

The much-anticipated event kicked off on Thursday, Sept. 7, and will continue through Sunday, Sept. 10.

The Fair, which is hosted on the North Haven Fairgrounds, will feature entertainment and a number of attractions, from live music to livestock competitions. Everything kicked off Thursday evening with the opening ceremony featuring

honored guests and the VFW.

Thursday also featured something new to this year’s fair: The Demolition Derby, offered by JM Motorsports. The president of JM Motorsports is Jay Milligan, who has been involved in motorsports since his

youth.

Contentious Dem school board race heads to primary

Democratic voters will have the chance to pick nominees for their Board of Education slate at the Sept. 12 primary.

The vote will conclude a contentious primary where two incumbents seeking reelection have accused the party of shutting them out, but party officials say the candidates aren’t cooperat-

ing with the Democrats’ broader campaign.

At the primary, voters can pick their top two choices Heidi Avila, Lori Mansur and Amanda Gabriele to run

for full terms on the board in the November election. They’ll also choose between Thais Moore and Frederick Rodriguez to fill the remaining two-year term of another seat.

Finance 101: Reset your goals as summer comes to a close

Remember those financial resolutions you committed to at the beginning of the year? If they seem like a distant memory, the end of summer is an excellent time to reset and take stock of your progress. Follow the tips below to recommit yourself to your financial goals.

1. Start with a clean slate. Review your financial situation and recent spending patterns. Is your spending aligned with your financial goals? Re-evaluate any bad money habits that may be holding you back from making better financial decisions. Remind yourself that healthy financial behaviors can become part of your daily routine.

2. Commit to financial stability. It’s easier to do something when you are intentional. Just like you set aside an afternoon to clean out the garage, set aside a few hours to clean up your finances.

During this time, reflect, organize and make a conscious commitment to take responsibility for your financial future.

3. Create, update or review your plan of action. A financial plan provides a roadmap for spending and saving, and encourages you to allocate your money toward the items or experiences that matter most to you. Your plan should articulate how you intend to handle your day-to-day finances, while working to achieve your long-term goals

such as paying off your home mortgage and confidently retiring on your terms. If a large expense comes along, you may need to re- evaluate your financial priorities. Adjust as necessary and then get back on track as soon as possible. Likewise, if you receive a raise or windfall, consider how the additional funds can be applied to your financial plan.

4. Spend within reason. Your plan can provide you with guardrails to keep long-term goals in sight as you satisfy near-term wants and needs. When you know your emergency fund, retirement and other goals are on track, you can purchase tickets to the big game or plan a family trip without feeling guilty or worried that the costs will prevent you from achieving your larger financial goals.

5. Prepare for the unexpected. Life can throw challenging curveballs. Unexpected events such as unplanned medical bills or losing your job can greatly impact your bottom line. The only certainty is uncertainty, and that’s why it’s critical to assess your insurance policies to ensure you’re fully covered, and establish an “emergency fund” to cover surprise expenses. Consider reviewing your life, disability health, home and auto insurance policies with a financial professional who can help you identify and close any gaps in coverage. If you’ve acquired artwork, collectibles, technology or other valuables, make sure they are covered under your current home insurance plan. Also, use this as a time to update beneficiaries on your policies if needed.

6. Find joy in the process. The desire to keep your finances in good order is an admirable aspiration, and it has lasting impacts. Focusing on your finances today may help you to achieve a more comfortable financial future for you and your family tomorrow. Consider working with a financial professional to help create a plan to reach your goals. With renewed energy and a well-defined plan, you can feel good about your financial choices.

“We’re all running together as a slate because we’re very aligned,” Gabriele, an incumbent, said.

Gabriele protested the Democratic Town Committee’s decision to not add new voting members until after picking a slate. She also said committee leaders wanted more control over the slate and she has an active complaint before the State Democratic Committee.

“It seems a little bit like the real housewives of North Haven-type drama going on here. It’s not really my bag,” she said.

Rodriguez, also vice chair of the town committee, said the Democrats did nothing wrong in the process and chose to nominate a slate of candidates that’s willing to work more cooperatively with the party.

“She’s going through great lengths to stop us from doing regular business just because she wanted to be the endorsed candidate,” he said.

Gabriele petitioned her way

to the primary and has campaigned with Moore, currently filing a seat after the retirement of Jennifer Cecarelli, and Mansur, who was endorsed by the party.

Gabriele is a data analyst for the Mayo Clinic, while Moore is a senior vice president and director of marketing and communications for Lockton Companies’ Northeast region and Mansur is a pediatric nurse.

Gabriele said the Empower North Haven team wants to expand diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the school.

“We want to make sure that everybody knows that they belong here,” she said. She said other top priorities include creating a items along. She also said the group wants to expand vocation training in school, pointing to more formal classes for students who want to be nurses as an example.

Avalia said she should win one of the two nominations, though, because her experience as a lawyer shows her ability to think critically.

“I’m a person of integrity, and I hope to bring integrity and transparency into the process, ” she added.

Avila said she decided to run after seeing North Haven High School fall to 126th place in the U.S. News & World Reports ranking of Connecticut high schools.

“That really saddens me because one of the reasons I moved into this town almost 18 years ago was because of the high grades that the school system had,” she said.

Avila commented that she’d examine the budget to make sure money is being spent effectively. When that’s not the case, she said she’d push to use those funds for programs that would improve the school system.

She also pledged to hold administrators accountable for how money is spent.

Neither Rodriguez or Moore is formally endorsed in their race. Rodriguez said the committee was initially told it could put up two candidates, but town officials later said Democrats would need to choose.

Rodriguez feels his experience in higher education makes him the most qualified candidate. He works as a full-stack, or software, engineer for Yale University’s system of libraries, and he is an adjunct professor at the University of New

Haven.

He said his top priority is focusing on academic rigor, especially with the threat of students using ChaptGPT or other artificial intelligence platforms to cheat on assignments.

“I don’t think the board is ready to face those issues,” he said.

Rodriguez said the school district needs to gather more data to determine when de-

cisions are correct or when changes are needed. One example, he said, is the lack of data to determine whether school resource officers are effective.

“We need to act a little bit quicker and have more data,” he said.

Rodriguez said he also wants the board to engage the public earlier in the process when making big policy decisions, and to share data as it comes in.

The North Haven Fair hosted its annual event from Thursday, September 8, through Sunday, September 11, 2022. The fair had activities for all ages, which included over 60 product vendors, 40 food vendors, rides, pony rides, a petting zoo, animal exhibits, live music, and even truck pulls.

There was also a Kids’ Demo Derby for those age 4 through 9 – power wheels not provided.

“I hope kids get involved and bring their Power Wheels. Those are our future demolition drivers,” Milligan said.

Over the course of the fair, many bands will take the stage, including “Stiletto,” a Billy Joel Tribute Band, on Saturday night. But the Main Stage isn’t just for musicians – visitors can attend a Country Line Dancing session on Friday or a Family Friendly Zumba class on Sunday. There will also be a variety of home goods, crafts, agricultural products and animals judged throughout the weekend. Entrants to those competitions can win titles such as “Best in Rugs” and “Best in Pickled Prod-

ucts.” Junior competitors can also participate in these competitions.

Judges will look at a wide range of items, which can include anything from homemade magnets to peanut butter cookies.

Kirsten Lombardi is on the board of the Fair and the head of indoor vendors and entertainment. Lombardi became involved in the fair as a craft vendor, but joined the Fair Association Board last year.

Lombardi said her favorite part of the event each year is the atmosphere as summer turns into fall.

“How the smell of kettle corn and unique, creative food trucks float around, sounds from tractors on the arena, handmade vendors roll out their fall items (and) gifts, and all the local farms and community bring their animals to exhibit,” Lombardi said. “Even to the lights of rides at night and families having a great time.”

According to Lombardi, there won’t be much rest for the planning committee after the Fair.

“Preparations start the week after with a debrief of the Fair. (There) we discuss what worked well, what can we do differently for next (year), etc,” Lombardi said.

“The Board and volunteers have been working hard at updating the grounds and making new additions to the Fair.”

North Haven curbside bulk pick up schedule

First Selectman Michael J. Freda announced that Field Operations (P.W.), will provide a two-week collection program for bulk items for the last two full weeks of September (Sept. 18-22, and Sept. 25-29) that will be collected at the curb after the regular sanitation collection has been completed.

Residents can place items at the curb by 5 a.m. on their designated trash collection day.

Bulk items include: Upholstered items - sofas, chairs, mattresses, box springs, love seats, sectionals, and reclining chairs; Appliances –washers, dryers, ranges, and dish washers, refrigerators and freezers (per state law please remove doors); Metal items - curtain rods, bicycles, metal tables, metal ladders, lawn mowers, metal grills, air conditioners etc.; Vehicle tires (without rims) Sanitation will pick up two per week, per household during bulk pick up.

To reduce clutter at the curbside, residents may bring mattresses to the Recycling Center Monday-Friday

8 a.m. – noon and Saturday 8 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.

*Note that wood items are

not considered bulk. Wood items, including wooden chairs, tables, bookcases, etc., can be incinerated and therefore are picked up along with weekly curbside sanitation collection as long as wooden pieces are smaller than four feet.

Brush or yard waste is not included and may be brought to the Recycling Center at 90 Elm St. Branches may be tied up in small piles (3) to be picked up with weekly sanitation collection.

Electronics such as televisions, stereos, computers, copiers, fax machines, etc., must be brought to the Recycling Center, located on Elm Street, adjacent to the North Haven Racquet Club. By law, electronics must be recycled and the Recycling Center is available to all North Haven residents.

North Haven Garden Club’s Broadway Island refurbished

Club members Sue Dannenhoffer and Fran Notaro, stewards of the Dolly Chagnon Memorial Garden on the Broadway Island, along with assistance from Camille Bracale and Lee Fermo worked to refurbish the garden on the median on Broadway. The diseased boxwood were removed in late spring leaving a broad area to be cleaned, replanted and mulched. A dwarf Alberta spruce, blue hydrangea and red everblooming rose bush were purchased and planted with donated funds. Perennial planted in the garden are Russian sage, anemone, onion, rose campion. Daisies were transplanted from Sue and Fran's gardens with more plantings to continue until fall. The garden is diligently watered by hand carrying water jugs to the island. It was back to school for local students on Monday, Aug. 28.

To kick things off on the right foot, the North Haven High School Parent, Teacher, Student Association (PTSA) sponsored the Senior Sunrise event at North Haven High School, where members of the NHS Class of 2024 met before classes officially began to enjoy some donuts and coffee.

Then it was off the class for the students, as they began their final year at NHS.

Revamp our school system

We need to revamp our school system in North Haven. That will require new people with old ideas. When I went through the system (1972 graduating class), our town had one of the top public-school systems in the country. Now, our high school ranks 126th out of 198 in the state. Proficiency of our graduates in math is 41%. Reading is not much better at 64%. Something needs to change. Our current Board of Education is not doing its job. They get more money every year to educate fewer students and yet we have poor results. We need some new people, who will put the education of our students first.

Heidi Avila and Frederick Rodriguez would be a great start. It is my understanding that they both believe in the three Rs, reading writing & arithmetic, above all else. Please vote for both of them in the upcoming primary for the Democratic party on September 12th.

On Tuesday, September 12th, North Haven Democrats will go to the polls to nominate candidates for the Board of Education. I support Heidi Avila, and encourage all North Haven Democrats to vote for her.

Having lived here for nearly twenty years and put her three children through North Haven schools, Heidi understands our town and the challenges that parents sometimes face getting the best education possible for their kids. She also has the overwhelming endorsement of the North Haven Democratic Town Committee.

As a practicing attorney, Heidi understands how to navigate complex legal issues, and will bring a fresh and valuable perspective to the Board of Education. She’s smart, she will ask tough questions, and, most importantly, will focus on pursuing academic excellence, helping all kids to be the best that they can be,

We need a change

I am writing to ask all registered North Haven democrats to vote in the Sept. 12th primary. All polling places will be open from 6AM to 8PM, so make sure you go to your usual polling location.

The purpose of the primary is to select democrats for Board of Education for the November municipal election. There are 3 candidates for a full term on the BOE and 2 candidates for a 2-year term to fill a vacancy.

I am supporting Heidi Avila for the full term, and Frederick Rodriguez for the 2-year term. Heidi is an attorney with her own firm here in North Haven. The BOE deals with lots of legal issues, so we need Heidi on the board. Frederick is a technology expert at Yale which is also a necessary skill set. Both Heidi and Frederick care about inclusion and creating a safe and welcoming environment for our students. However, they are also determined to improve academic achievement in our schools.

A recent ranking of Connecticut public high schools listed North Haven at 126th out of 206 schools (see US News & World Report). This is unacceptable. We need a change on the BOE, and Heidi and Frederick are ready for the challenges ahead. We need to do a better job preparing our stu-

dents for the future.

Heidi has had children in the school system and Frederick currently has kids attending North Haven schools. Heidi and Frederick are anxious to make a real difference for all students.

Let me introduce you to Attorney Heidi Avila. She is currently your North Haven Democratic Party endorsed candidate, a businesswoman, a homeowner, a mother, a daughter, and my sister. I can best illustrate her determination and drive by speaking a little of what I witnessed growing up as siblings in the same home and then as young adults.

At one point in Heidi's life, our biological mother became terminally ill with cancer. Her disease spread and eventually took her life while Heidi was a Senior in High school. Heidi cared for her while maintaining good standing with her high school academic obligations and working full-time. During the last days of our

mother's life, Heidi never missed a visit to the hospital, where she spent long hours with our mother and always had a loving, emphatic, sup portive touch.

Later, as a young woman, my sister was raising her child, working full-time, and en rolled as a full-time under graduate and then law school student at the Uni versity of Connecticut. When she registered at the univer sity, Heidi's baby boy was only two years old. Today, she is the proud mother of three beautiful children, all of whom have attended school in North Haven. In addition to running a suc cessful law practice in North Haven, she primarily cares for our elderly father, who was recently diagnosed with Dementia.

My sister Heidi is a young woman who has already overcome many challenges growing up in the Hill neigh borhood of New Haven. She believes in people, especially our young people, and the value of education to their individual quality of life and the betterment of the entire community.

As your representative to the North Haven Board of Edu cation, Heidi will work dili gently to look after every child's interest and ensure that tax dollars are appropri ately delegated to the child's best interest. Heidi is coura geous and open-minded, which is essential to this po sition. Moreover, she is in clusive, caring, and depend able, but she has integrity.

Heidi has been a source of inspiration to many people, including me and my older brother. I eagerly support her as our North Haven Board of Education repre sentative for these reasons, and many more; I invite you to join the North Haven Democratic Party in their support of her candidacy for the North Haven Board of Education.
