THUMBS UP

COVID-19 PANDEMIC

187 new cases in town The number of COVID-19 testing locations and hours of available testing will expand in Connecticut as the state continues to see more positive cases, driven in part by the fast-spreading omicron variant and an increased demand for testing. More Than Likes, a North Haven-based nonprofit operated by teenagers with the goal of engaging young people in community service projects, hosted a successful toy drive on Friday, Dec. 17. "We are incredibly excited about this event. We collected more than 500 gifts," Alex Ranciato, CEO and founder of More Than Likes, said. "These gifts will be going directly to the Annie C. Courtney Foundation, which will then donate them to foster kids and kids who would ordinarily not have anything on Christmas." Ranciato wishes to thank all who donated to the toy drive and encourages people to visit morethanlikes.org "to stay updated and learn how you can help."

Santa delivers joy, presents in North Haven By Nicole Zappone Special to The Citizen

He may not have had reindeer escorting him, nor did he go down a chimney. He didn’t even have milk and cookies to snack on, but Santa Claus still made a special appearance in North Haven recently. However, with his reindeer back at the North Pole, St. Nick needed a ride. And that came courtesy of Northeast Company 4. The North Haven Fire Department’s annual Santa Run took place Saturday, Dec. 18 and Sunday, Dec. 19, and Santa – riding in a fire truck – got to see over 100 families. The purpose of the yearly run is to bring joy and deliver a little Christmas cheer to good boys and girls of See Santa, A2

While there are currently about 400 state and private testing locations across the state, Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont said Monday that seven more state sites will be added to the mix, including a new saliva testing site on the New Haven Green. “We’re expanding the hours of many of our sites to make it easier for you, before work and after work. We’re adding on additional sites. I’ve had good conversations with the pharmacies. They are going to be expanding testing as well,” said Lamont, adding how the hospitals are also expanding their public testing capacity. Since Friday, Dec. 17 there have been more than 6,200 additional positive cases in Connecticut, according to figures released Monday. The number of hospitalizations grew by 101, to 837, the highest level since early February. The state's most recent COVID-19 report, which includes two weeks of data, showed 187 positive cases in North Haven, which kept the community in the coronavirus red zone. The trigger for top-of-thechart red status starts at 15 cases per 100,000 people per day. See COVID, A2

A FEEL-GOOD STORY

SENIOR CENTER SANTAS

Earlier this month, Michelle Charm and Pam Lerner of the GFWC Women’s Club of North Haven delivered 43 stuffed animals to the North Haven Police Department. Plush pets are kept in NHPD vehicles and are used to comfort children during crisis situations. “For many young children, just being able to cuddle a cute, soft stuffed animal helps ease their fears and can help calm the child,” the NHPD stated in a social media post.

Recently, local seniors spent a lovely afternoon listening to Christmas music, singing along and crafting Santa wreaths at the North Haven Senior Center. Pictured with their creations are Doreen Henninger, Marva Samuel, Sally Nanfeldt, Hazel Vason, Jennifer Hendricks, Karen Bodie, Kathy Herpok and Dolores Marques. If you are interested in joining the North Haven Senior Center, call 203-239-5432.

fident this campaign will not only inspire residents and visitors to explore Connecticut this winter season but will exude a sense of newness about all we have to offer.”

Using large letters made of plywood and decorated with evergreen juniper boughs, lights and red balls representing holly berries, the Daytime Gardeners spelled out the word “joy” for The Landing of North Haven’s Winter Wonderland, held Dec. 10 and 11. Following the Winter Wonderland event, the Daytime Gardeners decided to share their positive message with even more people, so club members relocated their “joy” creation to the corner of Arrowdale Road and Thompson Street. The Daytime Gardeners of North Haven enjoy creative activities as well as the everyday work involved with gardening projects of all types. New members are always welcome. For more information, email proto.mary@yahoo.com.

The campaign, which runs through March 31, 2022, will include television ads that are scheduled to run during high-profile events including the Super Bowl, the Academy Awards, New Year’s Eve specials, and the Big East basketball tournament.

The Daytime Gardeners’ “joy” set-up, and its creators: Barbara Feinberg, Doreen Alexander, Sally Brockett, Mary Ellen Proto, Irene, Ed Cowern and Walt Brockett.

It also will include a social media campaign and bill-

board advertisements that will feature photos and captions from state residents, including celebrities and visitors. “This new winter tourism campaign showcases just how vibrant, diverse, and inclusive Connecticut is today,” Gov. Ned Lamont said. “Not only will it help attract new visitors to Connecticut, but it will also drive revenues to our many incredible restaurants, hotels, attractions, and all kinds of local business across the state.”

Lawmakers fail to reach deal on congressional district lines A bipartisan commission tasked with redrawing the boundaries for Connecticut’s congressional districts failed to meet its deadline on Tuesday, sending the challenging job of crafting a new map to the Connecticut Supreme Court once again.

In 2011, the last time boundaries were redrawn, lawmakers couldn’t reach agreement on the congressional districts and the state’s highest court named a special master to redraw the lines. “We’ll continue to have conversations with our counterparts, but I just don’t think we’ll be able to get there. It’s not adversarial. No one is

angry at anybody. This is high-stakes stuff,” said House Speaker Matt Ritter, D-Hartford. He noted how both Democrats and Republicans face “external pressures” to redraw the congressional lines in a certain way. In contrast, the group was able to reach bipartisan agreements on how to redraw the state Senate and House of Representatives to accommodate population shifts, lauding the process as a template for the rest of the rest of the country. “This is bigger than Connecticut. It has national implications, potentially. And so, I think for a lot of us, we’re hearing from people down in Washington about what they think and I think there’s a lot less appetite for agreement, given the level of stress and toxicity in that environment,” he said. “I think both sides feel it.” Senate Minority Leader Kevin Kelly, R-Stratford, however, blamed the state’s all-Democratic congressional delegation for the process falling apart. He accused the U.S. House members of thinking they’re an “entitled

class” that’s “scared of competition” from Republicans and only want to to have safe districts. “Congressional Democrats only care about keeping their power. Their failure to reasonably negotiate led to an impasse. It’s why nothing gets done in Washington and it is unfortunate that this dysfunction is being brought to our state,” he said in a written statement. The Connecticut Supreme Court agreed earlier this month to give the Reapportionment Commission until Dec. 21 at noon to finish its work redrawing the congressional district lines. The justices also ordered the commission to file an interim status report on Dec. 15 to update the court on the panel’s efforts. That report was to include names, addresses and telephone numbers of three people the commission would recommend to serve as a special master, in case the panel couldn’t adopt a plan by Dec. 21. But as of Tuesday, the group still could not agree on three names, Ritter said.

SUDOKU

In a notice released Tuesday afternoon, the court said it will “appoint its own special master” unless the commission complies with its earlier order and produces three names by 5 p.m. The Republicans have submitted their own list of three names to the court, according to documents provided by the Judicial Branch. Ritter said he thought it was “absolutely terrible” the state Supreme Court is being put in the awkward position, for the second time in a decade, of having to finish the legislative task of redrawing district lines. Ritter said he was “extremely disappointed” in both himself and the process. “I think it is a very risky strategy for both sides to go to court because we’re asking the court to achieve a very difficult situation. And I just hope that the court will agree that minimal changes is what should be required. I think that is where I am,” he said. “But I readily admit this is not what they do and the expectation should always be that the legislators will do this job in the future.”

North Haven Garden Club members Sandy Ginter, Bene Jablonski and Fran Notaro delivered 59 handmade greenery mugs to Montowese Health and Rehabilitation Center recently. Due to COVID restrictions, the club's annual holiday gathering – when greenery mugs would typically be made – was called off. So, instead, members made the mugs at home. The arrangements were created by Mary Ann Angelopoulos, Cindy Adinolfi, Italia Avitable, Marge Quinn, Lee Fermo, Camille Bracale, Laurie Falco, Gerri Giordano, Brenda Howlett, Notaro, Ginter and Jablonski. Check out The North Haven Garden Club on Facebook for lots of useful and entertaining information and pictures of all the club does in the community.
