Oct. 29 is National DEA Takeback Day

The Town of North Haven and the Drug Enforcement Agency will team up once again to give the public the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

This is the 22nd National DEA Takeback Day, with collection events taking place every April and October.

Vaping devices and cartridges are now being accepted. Items that will not

be accepted include: syringes, needles or other sharps; inhalers, such as those for asthma; aerosol cans; mercury thermometers; iodine-containing medications and illegal drugs or substances (including marijuana, which, under federal law, is still a Schedule 1 drug).

In high school, Tseperkas was a four-year letter winner for topranked Rocky Point High School on Long Island, and was a two-time conference place winner and runner up.

Leave all medications in their original containers if possible. Cross out the person’s name with a black marker to ensure privacy.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents are asked to bring medications for disposal to North Haven Fire Headquarters at 11 Broadway. The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.

This is a drive through, drop-off event. Visitors simply need to pull down the driveway of Fire Headquarters and drive around to the back, where they will be greeted by staff to accept the medications. Visitors will be asked to remain in their vehicles and to hand the medications through the window to the staff.

Nominees sought for bank’s Community Diversity Award Press Release

Liberty Bank is accepting nominations for its 22nd annual Willard M. McRae Community Diversity Award. The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 21 and the recipient will be recognized this fall.

Since 2001, Liberty Bank has presented the Diversity Award to individuals who have made outstanding and ongoing contributions to the cause of promoting and celebrating diversity, equity and inclusion in the communities served by the bank. It is named in honor of the late Willard M. McRae, past chairman of the Liberty Bank Board of Directors and a founding member of the Liberty Bank Foundation Board of Directors.

A lifelong Middletown resident, McRae was known for his extraordinary commitment to equal access and opportunities for all, regardless of economic status, race, background, disability, or other factors.

State farmers can apply for federal assistance

Governor Ned Lamont announced this week that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved his request to expand the natural disaster declaration that it recently approved for certain parts of Connecticut due to the drought that impacted the state this summer. As a result, agricultural producers in all eight of the state’s counties are now eligible to be considered for assistance from the Farm Service Agency, such as emergency loans, to offset the costs of production

losses they experienced from the drought.

With the addition of this latest declaration, Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New London and Windham counties have each been designated as primary natural disaster areas due to the drought.

Those designations have resulted in the state’s two remaining counties – New Haven and Tolland – each being named as contiguous disaster counties. Farm operators in both primary and contiguous counties are eligible for assistance.

Clubs unite to liven up local spots

On Saturday, Sept. 17, members of the North Haven Garden Club along with Key Club members from North Haven High School gathered at Town Hall to weed and plant 18 large yellow mums. We also weeded the town green gardens directly across the street.

NHGC members, with help from Key Club members Victoria Pachnik, Shen Wan, Naomi Dimkpa, Elisabetta Sposito, Ayla Sirvi,

Tyler Russo, Samantha Adams, Meghan Derubeis and Anna Mortali worked together to get the mums planted in a couple of hours.

At the same time, NHGC members teamed with Key Club members Mia Crisci and Savannah Nash to plant six large mums at the Colonial Garden.

After multiple days with temperatures in the 90s and no end in sight, local officials and farmers are keeping an eye on the horizon hoping for some rain. Gary Lessor, a meteorologist at Western Connecticut State University, said the heat wave will continue

through the weekend, with the heat index possibly hitting 100 degrees this week. Lessor said the high temperatures combined with humidity make it feel even hotter.

“The humidity makes it feel oppressive,” Lessor said on Monday. “If your going to be outside for any duration stay hydrated.”

So far this year, the area is six inches below the normal

rainfall level, Lessor said. Some areas are experiencing passing showers or brief thunderstorms, but for the most part the drought conditions continue, Lessor said. The initial summer forecast called for a hot and dry summer, and there is no end in sight, Lessor said. The only thing that would alleviate the conditions would be a tropical storm, and there are none on the radar, Lessor continued. The drought is normal for this time of year,

Jones’ attorney, Norm Pattis, told the judge that his client was boycotting the proceedings because he feels he’s being asked to either commit perjury, be held in contempt of court or invoke his rights not to answer questions under the Fifth Amendment. “And so, from Mr. Jones’ perspective, by operation of law, he has been placed in an untenable position,” Pattis said.

Pattis rested his case without calling any witnesses, then argued in motions to the judge that damages should be limited.

The jury was then dismissed for the day. Jurors were expected to begin deliberations Thursday after hearing closing arguments and instructions from the judge.

The trial began Sept. 13 and the jury heard evidence over 13 days. During the trial, the FBI agent and 14 family members testified, with many saying that after Jones pushed the conspiracy theory on his popular Infowars show, they received death and rape threats, mail from conspiracy theorists that included photos of dead children, and had in-person confrontations with people telling them their children or wives or mothers never existed.

Mark and Jackie Barden, whose 7-year-old son Daniel was killed, testified Tuesday that people had urinated on their son’s grave and threatened to dig it up to prove he was still alive.

Relatives said the harassment has not stopped in the nearly 10 years since the shooting.

Jones in recent years has acknowledged the shooting happened, but claims the families are being used to push a gun control and antifree speech agenda.

In a similar trial last month in Austin, Texas, home to Jones and Infowars, a jury ordered him to pay nearly $50 million in damages to the parents of one of the children killed in the shooting, because of the hoax lies.

A third such trial in Texas involving two other parents is expected to begin near the end of the year.

Jones has said he expects the cases to be tied up in appeals for the next two years and has asked his audience to help him raise $500,000 to pay for his legal expenses.
