Thieves going after catalytic converters
North Haven sees a dip in COVID cases

Citizen report
Citizen report
The state’s latest COVID-19 report, which includes two weeks of data, showed 783 positive cases in North Haven, which kept the town in the coronavirus red zone.
Cheshire police responded to four locations throughout town on Monday for reports of catalytic converters being stolen. Two of the incidents took place at school parking lots. The other two happened at commercial lots.
The numbers do appear to be headed in the right direction, however. The state’s previous report showed 970 cases in North Haven. The trigger for top-of-the-chart red status starts at 15 cases per 100,000 people per day. North Haven’s 783 cases translates to 236.2 cases per 100,000 people per day.
Meanwhile, in late December, catalytic converters were stolen from around a dozen school buses in Southington.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 symptoms may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus.
North Haven police have seen an increase in catalytic converter thefts as well.
Symptoms may include fever or chills, coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.
The reason? Catalytic converters, an exhaust emission control device, contain precious metals, such as platinum and rhodium, and can be sold for $50 to $1,500. “The best way to prevent catalytic converter theft is to park your vehicle in a garage. This is not always possible, so if you must park outside it is best to park in well-lit areas,” the North Haven PD wrote in a Jan. 23 Facebook post.

“We want our recreation permit holders to enjoy our watershed lands during Connecticut’s beautiful winter weather, but it’s important that people keep safety in mind,” Ruggiero added. “Any ice on reservoirs is unstable and dangerous. "Frozen bodies of water can be deadly as the top layer of ice can easily give way trapping you under the freezing water. Your body can go into shock from the rapid temperature changes leaving you disoriented and unable to find a way out. Reservoirs in particular present additional dangers due to being far deeper than most lakes or ponds," RWA Recreation Program Specialist Jeff Yale stated. "These tragedies can be avoided by simply staying off the ice."
RWA does not allow activities of any kind on the ice at our reservoirs, which serve as the source of drinking water for some 430,000 consumers in Greater New Haven,” said RWA Police Captain Paul Ruggiero. “Frozen reservoirs can be far more dangerous than a frozen lake. Reservoirs are essentially flooded river valleys with fluctuating water levels, and when people stand close to the shore, they are standing above iced-over water that can be up to 30 feet deep.”

As winter weather and frigid temperatures set in throughout south-central Connecticut, the Regional Water Authority (RWA) warns residents that it is never safe to walk, run, skate, sled, ski, or otherwise travel over ice-covered reservoirs. Posted warning signs on watershed land are meant to be strictly observed.

Financial wellness programs benefit all involved
These statistics could paint a worrisome picture of the mental health of your employee population. They could also impact your company's bottom line. Each year, employers lose an average of $1,900 per employee in lost productivity due to financial stress. This helps explain why more and more employers are making fi-
What is an employee financial wellness program? Employee financial wellness programs are programs that help employees better manage their finances and reduce financial worries. As such, they contribute to a better overall financial well-being for employees. When it comes to employee financial wellness, employers can implement a variety of programs and offerings. Some fo-
Educational-focused programs, for example, may provide employees with financial workshops about homeownership, retirement savings, budgeting, or debt management. Employer matching programs may involve matching a certain percentage of retirement contributions employees make to their 401(k) or to student loans. And other types of financial assistance could include tuition assistance, medical bill negotiation, or financial planning subsidies.
The key to a successful financial wellness program is first determining the specific needs of your employees so that you can more accurately meet those needs. Different workforces will have different financial situations and necessitate different programs.
Tax-filing season is underway The filing deadline to submit 2021 tax returns or an extension to file and pay tax owed is Monday, April 18. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Monday, Oct. 17 to file. To speed up refunds, the IRS urges taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit information as soon as they have everything they need to file an accurate return. If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review that may slow the tax refund. Having all information available when preparing the 2021 tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing. Most individual taxpayers file IRS Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR once they receive
