Dear Parent: It has come to our attention very recently that there are teacher sponsored trips involving our students, which are taking place during school vacations, including the vacation beginning this Friday, February 18, 2011. The purpose of this letter is to advise you that these trips are not being sponsored, organized or conducted with the approval of the Wallingford Board of Education. Consequently, the Board and school administration can accept no responsibility for these trips. The Board of Education has had in effect for quite some time Policy IICA and accompanying regulation IICA-R, which govern all student trips, both educational and recreational. The Board appreciates the value of such trips under proper circumstances. However, all of these field trips require prior administrative approval, and they must be conducted in accordance with various provisions designed to safeguard the participants on the trip. I will add that without our approval, the Board's insurance coverage is not available in the event of any accidents, injury or other unforeseen events. The individual participants in the trips will be personally and legally responsible for any issues that arise from these non-Board sanctioned events. If your child is scheduled to participate in a teacher sponsored trip over the coming vacation or in the future, I am not specifying what action you should or should not take. I am mainly interested in ensuring that you are made fully aware that such a trip has not been approved by the Wallingford Board of Education, and that the Board assumes no supervisory or legal responsibility for this trip. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact my office.

Sincerely yours,

alvatore F. Menzo Superintendent of.S SFIVI/ean
