SELFLESS TEEN UP FOR NATIONAL HONOR When Cheshire resident Hayley Falk first started her group, Because of the Brave, the then 16-year-old was simply hoping to educate those in her generation about the sacrifices made by veterans. Now, in 2022, what started as a blog has turned into a non-profit organization that organizes events, participates in regional activities, and is constantly looking for ways to show men and women in the military just how much their efforts are appreciated. Falk, now 18, recently was a named a finalist for the Citizens Honor Youth Service Award by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. She was nominated by Harvey “Barney” Barnum, former Marine, Cheshire native, and Medal of Honor recipient. Falk and Barnum are pictured.

The Cove Center for Grieving Children is offering a free program to help youngsters who have lost a close family member, due to the pandemic, cope with the experience. “Confronting COVID” will commence in September and provide support through a variety of activities geared towards healing. The Cove Center for Grieving Children has five locations throughout the state,

A new online system for special education data, including individualized education plans, is set to launch this school year. The new system promises greater
access for parents and school staff and more consistency across school districts.

The state Department of Education’s Bureau of Special Education partnered with the Massachusetts-based Public Consulting Group on the system, known as CT-SEDS. SEDS
stands for Special Education Data System. The project began about two years ago to support “goals and vision of developing a comprehensive statewide special education data system (CT-SEDS) to make available to all of its local school district part-

ners in 2022,” according to the Connecticut State Department of Education’s website. The new system includes a parent portal so families can access an individualized education plan, or IEP.
