Cheshire swimmers state their case Rams follow Class LL championship by capturing State Open Record-Journal staff
NEW HAVEN — First Class LL, now the State Open. Less than a week after ending Greenwich’s nine-year dynasty in Class LL (see story on page 4) the Cheshire girls swimming team snapped the Cardinals’ fouryear run as State Open champ, edging the Cardinals 428-420 on Sunday at Yale’s Kiputh Pool Just as they were in the class meet, the Rams were led at the Open by Sophie Murphy and Julia Stevens. Each won two individual events — the same two they captured in Class LL.
Murphy, a junior, successfully defended her State Open titles in the freestyle sprints. Murphy won the 50-yard free in 23.68 seconds and the 100 in 51.08. Stevens, a senior, swept the distance freestyles. Her winning times were 1:51.97 in the 200 and 4:59.55 in the 500. Murphy and Stevens also teamed with junior Nora Bergstrom and freshman Avery Potyrala to place second in the meet-ending 400 freestyle in 3:32.51. While Greenwich won that race, Cheshire secured the team title with the second-place points.

The individual championships won by Murphy and Stevens highlighted a handful of All-State performances for area swimmers. Cheshire’s Bergstrom had a pair. She was fourth in the 200 free (1:53.99) and third in the 500 (5:02.55). Jillian Stevens, twin sister of Julia Stevens, earned AllState in the 100 backstroke

Women in business navigate changing times By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
Businesses realize the world is ever-changing. Business owners and business leaders also know the world won’t wait for them to catch up should they fall behind. To that end, the topic of November’s Cheshire Chamber of Commerce Business Women’s Alliance Luncheon was “Navigating Change: The Future in Business.”
The monthly educational speaker series, chaired by Brette Stern, has been held for the past eight years, said Chamber President Yetta Augur. “It’s an amazing group of women supporting each other in growing our businesses,” she said. The presentation, held at Vespucci’s restaurant, gave the audience of business women insight into generational marketing by women who repre-
sent and lead in areas of banking and investment, accounting, housing, employment and workplace professionals. Linda Blackburn, a small business owner who has also taught business workshops and financial literacy in high schools, helped to facilitate the meeting. groups, said Brette Stern, a Realtor with the Calcagni Real Estate group in Cheshire. “I have a very small percentage of buyers under 29,” she said. While there are not many of them, one characteristic of younger home buyers is that they are “super hands-on” and very “budget conscious.” In the rental market, people in this age group are looking for lofts, one- and two-bedroom units and they want them in complexes with amenities. They want outdoor entertainment areas, pizza ovens and gyms, Stern said. The largest group of firsttime home owners is Millennials. They are ages 29-38. They have high debt to income ratios. About a third of homeowners have $75,000 or more in college debt and getting a mortgage isn’t easy. The average age for buying a first home is 34. They prefer “move-in-ready,” said Stern. “They are not as hands-on.” Gen X is 39 to mid-50s. This group is environmentally progressive, focused on utility costs and energy-efficient

appliances. “The trend we also see in Gen-X’s is multigenerational living,” Stern said. Buyers are looking for in-law suites or multi-family units to accommodate aging parents or having parents help in raising grandchildren, she added. As for Baby Boomers, they are flocking to retirement communities, but are also migrating out of state to North Carolina and Florida. Ashley Rendon, financial advisor with Edward Jones gave the audience something to think about. “Baby Boomers stand to transfer about 30 billion dollars’ worth of assets to Millennials by 2030.” Boomers are known for saving their money and working at one company, while Millennials do not have a lot of financial literacy and are not known for saving, said Rendon. However, Millennials saw their parents lose money in difficult economies and lose pensions, so “they are actually more fiscally conservative than Baby Boomers,” she said. Getting financial advice from professionals is paramount, she said, as younger generations are set to inherit from this transfer of wealth and may leave high school not even knowing how to balance their See Women, A4

Rams take Class LL crown from Greenwich Record-Journal staff

was hardly in over its head in returning to Class LL this season. In fact, they own those seas.

waiting on Sunday down at Yale. In the past two State Opens, Cheshire was second only to Greenwich.
Cheshire established the lead behind double-winners Sophie Murphy and Julia Stevens, then sealed the victory by capturing the evening’s final event, the 400 freestyle relay.
Tuesday night’s crown was state class title No. 29 for Cheshire — 42 overall when you add in the 13 State Opens the Rams have won.
Tuesday’s title was the third straight for Cheshire. The Rams had raised the flag in Class L in 2017 and 2018 be-

For those in the employment market, Jennifer Millea with Hobson Associates, an employment staffing agency, spoke to employment trends. “We are in a very candidate driven market,” she said. “That means that good candidates are receiving multiple offers.” Baby Boomer’s goals in the marketplace were to move up the ladder and have a retirement plan. They generally stayed with one company and stayed there. If something happened to disrupt their employment, such as getting laid off, those Baby Boomers who might be reentering the workforce now, face age discrimination.

Gen Xers do value stability and are loyal, but are open to new opportunities, said Millea. The unique thing about Millennials is that they are looking for the next best opportunity; even if they are happy with the company, Millennials want to continue to grow their skills, Millea said. Gen Z’s generation is 91 million strong and these “digital natives” are focused on paying down their college debt, and have an affinity to be their own boss, working gigs or as consultants.

The Rams extended their dualmeet win streak to 67 during the regular season and then, on Tuesday, saw Murphy defend her state titles in the freestyle sprints. The entire book sale is a momentous effort with volunteers supporting much of what goes into what you see at the sale. Unbelievable as it might sound; 10,000 books were in the sale this year. The Rotarians and the Cheshire High School MecaRams were among the dozens of volunteers. In order to process incoming donations of books, volunteers prepare year round, working Tuesdays and Fridays. They put in at least 20 hours a week. “We have the best volunteers ever,” said Deb Morck. “We couldn’t do it without them.” The Friends host two book sales a year. Police warn about recent phone scam

By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff
Police are warning residents to be wary of a new phone scam, in which an unknown caller is attempting to gain personal information by claiming to be a police officer. Police posted about the concern on Facebook earlier this month and stated they had received a complaint from a town resident that same day. The complaintant stated the call appeared to have come from the Cheshire Police Department’s routine phone number 203-2715500. The caller, police said, then identified himself as a Cheshire police officer and gave a fake badge number.

from the complainant, which was not given. This incident is under investigation,” the Facebook post read. “Please remember that No Officer would ever call to elicit personal information or ask for you to pay a fee to get out of a ticket, etc.” Police then urged residents to share the message, asking if they receive a similar phone call to contact the department by calling 203-2715500. Under Connecticut state law, impersonating a police officer with “intent to induce another person to submit to such pretented official authority” is a class D felony office. Such felonies are punishable by a prison sentence of one to five years, according to the state penal code.

AWARDS
2019 There are over 15,000 businesses across four cities, Meriden, Southington, Wallingford and Cheshire, whose hard work, dedication and success make our communities a great place to live and work. The Readers’ Choice program was created to recognize and reward our local businesses and to be a resource when you might be looking for a dentist, car repair, or even a place to have dinner with your family. Over 210,000 votes were cast, and over 500 businesses have earned the right to call themselves the Best of the Best and be celebrated at an exclusive first-class gala all for them. Congratulations again, to our 2019 Readers’ Choice winners.
