A big boost to efforts of animal advocacy group By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
An avenue of fundraising has opened up to assist Friends of Feral Cheshire Cats for the holiday season, co-founder Kerry Bartoletti recently announced. “A passionate advocate for cats in the Cheshire area has pledged to match all donations made to the local nonprofit by Christmas day, up to $15,000,” she said. This boost to operations will help the organization to address the many challenges facing homeless animals and those providing a helping hand.

Artist puts creative twist on enivronmental issues By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
It was a pole from an old clothing line in the backyard that kickstarted artist Sarah Schneiderman’s passion to recycle objects into artwork. She talked about her unusual approach to activist art at the November online meeting of the Cheshire Art League, facilitated by the
Cheshire Public Library.
“Found objects, donated materials, and trash have been my medium ever since,” Schneiderman said, detailing her creative journey from that clothing line to her fully realized crative process of turning discarded items into works of art.

Guilford struck first just 2:33 into the game, as senior Izzy Gurnham scored on a pass from senior co-captain Hannah Tillier. Cheshire responded on a penalty corner with 5:45 left in the first quarter. After making the insert, senior Taylor Warburton ran into the middle and ended up tipping the ball into the cage. Senior Raegan Bailey and junior Lauren Houle assisted on the goal. “It felt good to take momentum back after they scored first on us,” said Warburton. The rivals ended the opening quarter tied at 1-1, but Guilford took the lead for good in the second. Tillier scored on a pass from junior Maddie Epke with 6:12 left
Wildermann was impressed with the play of Tillier, who named SCC Tournament Most Outstanding Player. “Tillier is a dominant player,” said Wildermann. “She impacts both ends of the field.” With 2:39 left in the third quarter, Guilford extended the lead when sophomore M.J. Santa Barbara received a feed from senior Ella Kagan and took a chip shot that rolled into the cage. To cap the scoring with 9:44 remaining, Epke converted on a backhand shot to the right side of the Cheshire cage. For the Rams, junior goalkeeper Hannah Jalowiec made nine saves and sophomore Elise Hurlburt came off the bench to earn a save in the fourth quarter. Guilford senior Eve Young

Art From A1
The artist, who received a master of fine arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts, uses almost anything in her work from clean plastic containers to unused cannulas. “My main source of art material is my own home. I save the plastic bags that cereal comes in, gum wrappers, powdered drink mix packets – and all that other stuff that can't be recycled – but only as long as it can be cleaned,” she said. While the CAL program title,
“Recycled Objects: from Garbage to Art,” was catchy, the artist doesn’t use everything that’s garbage. For instance, she won’t use food scraps and used tissues. “That’s gross,” she said. “My goal is to reduce my generation of trash so that I'm not a source of my own materials,” she said, adding that it hasn’t happened and may not happen in her lifetime.
ing off the many stacked organizers in her tidy studio. Schneiderman uses an army of adhesives to hold the materials together and onto the backing boards of furnace filters, recycled canvases, and cast-off wooden boards. She finishes off her work with Elmer’s glue and then “Diamond Glaze” for a shiny coat.
Her travels, in particular the Schneiderman keeps an eye regular trips she takes to a southern Caribbean island, out for shiny baubles and broken jewelry at flea marare where Schneiderman kets and yard sales, too. beaches. It is in her artwork that Schneiderman also finds her voice as an activist. She makes statements, often satirical, on environmental and political topics. She unabashedly defines her politics as “definitely progressive and open.” Her collection, “More Garbage Than Fish” is a mélange of aquatic creatures made from garbage mostly found in their watery home environment. As a scuba diver, Schneiderman sees the crisis up-close. “The problem with plastic in the ocean is not going away,” she said. One of her pieces features an angelfish created from balloons, beads, a johnny gown, bottle caps and netting. The work “Yellowtail Snapper” is made from beads, wire, silk flowers, priority mail envelopes and plastic straws “Did you know that turtles are attracted to the smell of plastic,” she rhetorically asked the group from CAL. Schneiderman laments
the state of the oceans in her “SarahSchneiderman.com” website, stating, “Pound for the pound the oceans will contain more plastic than fish by 2050.” “Are You My Hero” and “You’re Fired, I Quit,” are works from Schneiderman’s political portrait series. The aggregation of plastic and discarded objects—buttons, beads, wrappers, bags and broken plastic pieces—took 40-plus hours of work for each portrait. Representations of Preet Bharara, former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York; former Energy Secretary Rick Perry and Eric Trump are among the portraits. The glut of available trash is more than enough fuel to feed her art, but the real hope Schneiderman has is to have people to take notice and care: “I want people to think when they see my work. I want it to move them.”

The kittens were discovered by chance as a fireman happened to spot them as he headed out of the building. Who left them is not known; what happened next was fortuitous. Food drives step up efforts for the holidays By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff
said financial donations often go further than purchasing extra food to bring into a local pantry or the food bank, since they’re able to acquire food at far lower prices than one would find in a grocery store.
Area food pantry officials see demand spiking with more families caring for children quarantining from schools or facing financial hardship amid the pandemic, just as the annual food drives they rely on are having difficulty continuing safely. “Things are tough right now for a lot of folks, so we’re seeing our numbers increase again,” said Sue Heald, food pantry manager for Master’s Manna in Wallingford. ” … It’s a combination of everything. For some people they’re unemployed and their unemployment benefits are running out.” The beginning of November has been busy since a spike in clients enrolling at the start of the pandemic in March, complicating an already busy time as the pantry’s volunteers prepare for their Turkey Tossing Two Days program to supply Thanksgiving meals to families. Master’s Manna’s canceled many food drives in the spring and summer, making the remaining drives and the donations from local businesses and individuals critical. The Connecticut Food Bank, Wallingford Police Department and an anonymous donor already pledged a large number of turkeys, and a Boy Scout troop planned its annual food drive, as well.
Stop & Shop’s Turkey Express program donates 1,000 Thanksgiving turkeys and $5,000 to the Connecticut Food Bank during a gathering at Stop & Shop in Cheshire, Tuesday. Many residents have also become nervous about getting enough food to feed their own families after seeing empty grocery store shelves in March and April. “We all remember what the stores looked like not too long ago, so those food donations just plunged. And so to maintain a supply and
even to hope to meet need, we began purchasing food at a very large scale,” he said. Stop and Shop Community Relations Manager Maura O’Brien said they’ve increased the number of turkeys they donate to food banks across the Northeast by 4,000 this year to meet the additional need spurred by the pandemic. The turkeys are donated at the corporate level, while local stores made the $5,000 financial donation. “Every year Stop and Shop provides turkeys to its food bank partners along with other charitable organizations and we want to just be sure that every single person across Connecticut and across the entire Northeast has access to a wholesome meal at Thanksgiving,” O’Brien said. “COVID-19 has created a much higher need for many people across the state and being able to support those neighbors in need is very important to us.” The organizers of Holiday for Giving, a Wallingford program which provides food, toys for children, hygiene items and gift cards to families in need, are preparSee Donations, A9

ing for the busiest year in a decade as well. Committee Chairperson Jennifer Lavoie expects this Christmas to be the busiest since the mortgage crisis in 2008. Though they haven’t been able to hold donation drives inside local schools, volunteers created an online Amazon wish list where participants can purchase items rather than donating in-person. Lavoie said in the first week of being live, they’ve already received a “truck load” of purchases. Collection bins were also placed outside supporting businesses early this year to make up for the reduced foot traffic. Nonetheless, Lavoie worries that the online food drive won’t yield as many donations as it has in the past, so the committee behind the program has been brainstorming more possible ways
of soliciting contributions. Sorting the items they receive also poses an additional challenge. Only a few people are allowed in the room they’re borrowing from the town Parks and Recreation Department for the processing, due pandemic precautions. In the past, as many as 20 volunteers would be bustling about, but now they have to carefully manage shifts to not overlap. In Berlin, the Social and Youth Services Department considered canceling its holiday distribution of food, toys and holiday items due to the logistical difficulties of sorting and handing out packages to hundreds of families, however it found that since the program was already run as a drive-thru it was fairly easy to modify it to minimize the amount of contact. By asking individual contributors to give multiples of the same item, rather than an assortment of different

The number of volunteers present in the Pistol Creek clubhouse on the day of the distribution will also be reduced and they’re focusing on having younger volunteers do more of the work.

“We’re just going to be real slow and deliberate about processing it and stress to everybody involved that we’re going to take it one at a time, no rushing, there’s no urgency,” said Doug Truitt, the department’s director. Truitt has seen similar distribution programs called off when organizers couldn’t find a way to hold it safely. Organizers instead would mail gift cards to grocery stores, an alternative the department considered.

COMMENTARY
Much ado about stuffing By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
Thanksgiving dinner. A time for peaceful family gatherings — or another food fight? I don’t mean a food fight like you might have had in your junior high school cafeteria. I mean the annual
or friend’s house.
argument over stuffing: what’s in it and whether or not to stuff the bird. Yes, that is the fight in my house. Ever since I was married “it” became a thing. At least when I was single, I cooked the main dish “my way” or I went to a relative
My way, of course, is the correct way. (Am I smirking?) Granted, I am a bit crazed when it comes to botulism and am always on the lookout for what might lead to food-related illnesses. I had severe food poisoning in my lifetime and do not ever want to revisit that episode (by the way, that was on my honeymoon in Europe, but that’s another story for another time). It also means I will not eat that chicken leg the hubby grilled. That chicken whose juices run “red” and not “clear” as instructed by all food health experts on the planet, including Maura Esposito at Chesprocott—that chicken I
will not touch. It also means I will never ever tempt fate by making stuffing and (heaven forbid) put it into the turkey as it is cooked in the oven. It seems I also had an untoward preoccupation (read that as a personal issue, obsession, unfounded phobia) with fat and gravy. I was always scooping up the excess fat and dabbing it off the
turkey. Heck, that’s what gives it flavor, right? And gravy? A doctor I once saw on television said you would never put grease down your kitchen sink since it would clog the drain pipes, so you should not eat gravy as it would clog your arteries. I have since gotten over my aversion to gravy. I’ve also seemed to have made peace See Joy, A14

LA GRANDE ILLUSION
Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters announced that, for the first time in its 54-year history, it will host its annual gala virtually on Thursday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. Called the 2020 Challenge, the night will feature appearances by “The Voice” winner Javier Colon, Fox 61 anchor Tim Lammers and Gov. Ned Lamont. with stuffing. I don’t think I ate stuffing for the longest time though. What changed my mind? The hubby. He was brought up in the family that did stuffing. And his family
would have a honking large 25-pound turkey, maybe even two, to feed everyone seated at the table. Do you remember the father (The Old Man) in “A Christmas Story”? He was obsessed with turkey. That is my father-in-law. After Thanksgiving, there’s turkey sandwiches and turkey casserole. He also makes turkey soup. I

Even more perplexing to me is my hubby’s family’s continual experimentation with their Thanksgiving dinner. Who does that? What happened to tradition? Sometimes the stuffing has wal-
nuts. Some years it’s cranberries, and then at another time it would have celery and “interesting” seasoning mixes. One constant to the stuffing was a secret ingredient. It was spicy. I liked it. I had no idea what was in it. I finally found out – and imagine my surprise – turns out it is venison sausage stuffing. My father-in-law hunts deer, so each season he takes his deer to a meat processor who has the secret seasoning recipe for the stuffing. It is delicious. (Okay, I was horrified at

first, but got over it.) This Thanksgiving, I may pass on the weird potato mash concoction or Grandma’s pink gelatin and marshmallow “salad” on the table. And while I may refuse to let my husband put stuffing into the turkey carcass in our house, when at the in-laws, I will definitely hold my plate up for one more serving of stuffing. cannot appreciate that at all. In my in-law’s kitchen, they have a small island with a butcher block top. The fat from the turkeys always gets deposited onto that island and in measurable quantities, probably enough to fill up 20 moisturizer jars. The fat “conditions” the wooden block for months.

Adopt-A-Family The holiday season is fast approaching and it’s of great importance to the Cheshire Human Services Department to be able to assist those in need. HSD will be continuing the annual Adopt-a-Family Holiday Program. However, due to the pandemic and in order to comply with public health guidelines, necessary modifications have been made. Many individuals and organizations may prefer to donate gifts and toys, but out of concern for the safety of recipient families, donors and staff, we will not be able to accept these types of donations. Instead, HSD is asking that donations be made in the form of gift cards that will be distributed to Cheshire families facing financial hardship during the holidays. Popular retailers include Target, Walmart, Marshalls, Dunkin, Kohl’s and Amazon, and HSD will always encourage supporting Cheshire’s local businesses.
Contact Kristen Schechter at Cheshire Human Services with questions, 203-2716690.

HERE ARE THIS WEEK’S MALE & FEMALE NOMINEES .
..
DEREK CAMPOVERDE
ESMERALDA AQUIRRE
Retiring Platt coach Tim Redican and his seniors signed off on the season — and their careers — with a nice touch of drama. Locked in a scoreless battle in their season finale Wednesday, Platt and visiting Bulkeley went to penalty kicks. The shootout went 10 rounds. In the end, it was a conversion by Derek Campoverde that delivered the win. Campoverde is a defensive back and the goal was the first of his varsity career.
Wilcox Tech junior Esmeralda Aguirre plays violin in a mariachi band. She’s also been making some fine music in her other band, the Wilcox Tech girls soccer team. The Indians stormed to the Capital Region Athletic League championship last week with wins over Prince Tech (3-0) and Goodwin Tech (5-0). Aguirre scored five of those goals eight goals — three against Prince in the semis and two against Goodwin in the final.
KRYSTIAN COLBERT
AMY CASORLA
One of the area’s most dynamic scorers in boys soccer this season was one of its youngest players. Wilcox Tech freshman striker Krystian Colbert scored 11 goals for the 6-3-1 Indians — nearly half of their 23-goal total. That included the two postseason tallies in the Capital Region Athletic League tournament against Cheney Tech in the semifinals (a 1-0 victory) and against Prince Tech/University in the finals (a 1-0 defeat).
Amy Casorla’s name did not turn up on the All-SCC list this year, but it will on the All-RJ Team. (Yes, we’ll let that one out of the bag.) We noticed Casorla plenty this fall. You really couldn’t miss her carrying the attack out of the midfield for the 7-3-2 Titans. The junior has speed to burn and a powerful touch that leant itself well to corner kicks. In one game alone against Lyman Hall, Sheehan scored on three of her corners.
XAVIER ZALER
SHANNON LITCHFIELD
Xavier Zaler didn’t join cross country until the summer of 2019. Who’d a thunk it? A senior captain this year, Zaler ran a personal-best 17:53 at Hubbard Park during the regular season and ultimately placed second in 18:06 in last week’s postseason meet, also held at Hubbard, against Platt and Bulkeley. Zaler came away ranked No. 10 in CCC Region B. He’s also part of Maloney’s school-record 4x800 indoor track relay.
Shannon Litchfield missed last year’s Class LL state championship game due to a broken leg. Watching her fly up and down the soccer field this year, you’d never know she suffered such a traumatic injury. The senior led the 14-0-0 Blue Knights in goals with 13. Litchfield was particularly on fire in the postseason, scoring one goal in the 3-1 CCC Region B semis vs. Bristol Eastern, then erupting for four in the final vs. Lewis Mills.

Long term care Connecticut Partnership for Long Term Care virtual presentation. Free seminar. On Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m., Cheshire Public Library will be sponsoring a presentation on this important topic with special guest speaker Aldo Pantano, from the Connecticut Partnership for LongTerm Care, with the State Office of Policy and Management. Come learn about how the state’s Partnership for LongTerm Care can help you plan ahead for your future long term care needs. No company specific products will be discussed, and there will be no sales or solicitations allowed – just information that you should know. If you’re 40 or older, longterm care insurance approved by the state’s Connecticut Partnership for Long-Term Care should be part of your retirement plan. These policies assure you of the highest quality standards. They’re affordable and provide asset protection, protect against inflation, and – most important – give you peace of mind through your retirement years.

Cheshire Public Library virtually presents, via Zoom, Decorate Your Home for the Holidays, Monday, Nov. 30, at 6:30 p.m. Join noted floral designer and Cheshire resident Sylvia Nichols virtually in her design workroom as she prepares to “dress up” her home for the holidays. This fun fast-paced 45 minute program will be filled with easy, affordable, practical ideas. Sylvia uses her personal holiday keepsakes, which will inspire your own creativity. As always, she will entertain you with lively anecdotes and offer her reassurance that you too, can create beautiful holiday arrangements. No stress! It’s fun!
