Crave apples? Cheshire’s got ’em By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
Cheshire is an apple town. Whether you’re looking for Honeycrisp, Macintosh, Macoun or Gala, you will find them at a local orchard. In Cheshire’s earliest days, apple orchards were a common sight throughout the town. It
was also common for homeowners to plant a few trees in their side and backyards. Even today, Cheshire has a good number of orchards. They are Norton Brothers Fruit Farm on Academy Road, Drazen Orchards on Wallingford Road, Hickory Hill Orchard and Old Bishop Farms on South Meriden Road.
Not sure which apple to try? The Norton Brothers Fruit Farm website recommends Empire apples for eating, since the fruit is juicy and crisp. Red Delicious is another eating apple, this one is on the sweet side. If you want an eating apple that’s tart, sink your teeth See Apples, A2
If you thought ghost hunting was all about goosebumps and ghoulies, screams in the night and demons – guess again. Dustin Pari, author of “And the Devil Shivered,” and best known for his work in the hit television show “Ghost Hunters” and “Ghost Hunters International” came to a different conclusion after seeking out spirits from other realms. Pari recently presented a new program he created, “Spirits of the World,” hosted by the Cheshire Public Library and made possible by The Friends of Cheshire Public Library. From his investigations in more than 26 countries, Pari gave the audience an eye-opening tour and hair-raising commentary of his favorite Ghost Hunters’ travels from around the world. This program is “a nice opportunity to chronicle the places, the stories,
the cultures, that I came across,” said Pari. In his travels, he has had frightening and intriguing experiences from seeing shimmering figures and dark shadows to hearing voices captured on recorders (Electronic Voice Phenomena) and has even been touched and had stones thrown at him. Pari explained his first paranormal experience occured when he was nine years old. It happened in his own house where he grew up in Rhode Island. “I saw a shadow figure,” Pari said. “Shadow figures stand about two to three feet tall and move very quickly,” he said, comparing the materializing figure to the vapors of gas fumes. “It terrified me,” he said. Pari did not have another experience like that until the television series. Leap Castle, Ireland was a Ghost Hunters’ investigation that changed Pari’s perspective on ghost hunting.
