A classic country store brings a message By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

It is easy to see why Old Bishop Farm is irresistible to so many. Driving along South Meriden Road, the view across the property’s iconic pond is of a bucolic 12plus acres planted in apple trees, blueberry and raspberry patches, a bold and colorful cutting garden, and a designated vegetable and herb garden. Anchored in the middle of it is a burgundy red building with white railings. This is the Old Bishop Farms country store. The property, farmed since the 1700s, and the former site of

country stores, is still in its nascency, during this reincarnation, as the Torello family take the time to “get it right.” John Torello is the planner, according to his wife, Carolyn, adding that he plans everything out. The couple bought the property in 2017. “We used to come here all the time, as customers, like everyone else,“ said John Torello. As new owners, they saw the work that needed to be done. They shut the property down for two years, to take a pause, in order to “make

it what is now,” John Torello said, proudly looking at the updated surroundings and pointing out new high ceilings in the renovated country store’s ice cream shop. The ice cream is John’s specialty. He makes it. Ice cream aficionados have the usual choices, along with flavors like s’mores, peach, sweet corn and according to the website, lemon ices with a hint of basil just like they make on the Italian coast. Passion for native plants motivates this local advocate for biodiversity By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

Historian collecting material on how COVID impacts the community By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

Cheshire Town Historian Jeanne Chesanow is seeking information on how local residents are faring during the pandemic in order to document life in the time of COVID The COVID-19 pandemic has reached around the world and in the United States has taken the lives of more than 180,000 people. Connecticut has seen 52,000 COVID-19 cases and recorded 4,400-plus deaths. Chesanow is an anthropologist and former Quinnipiac University professor. After reading accounts of how towns across the country want to record personal experiences of their community members during COVID, she was prompted to do the same in Cheshire. The individual stories are crucial, as they will “allow us to recall the deep influence that communities have on history, which is why this project is so necessary right now,” was a comment Chesanow read with interest from a Mill Valley, California library archivist. Chesanow also wondered, “Will future generations be able to understand what was experienced here in Cheshire at this time of uncertainty? What is life really like for people during the pandemic?” Chesanow had been using word of mouth and posted a sign in her front See Historian, A2

We have precious little info about the smallpox epidemic or the polio outbreak, so this is the time to collect local stories that will resonate with future generations,” Chesanow said. In addition to reminisces, the town historian is asking

Chesanow plans to donate these contributions to the Cheshire Library and the Cheshire Historical Society but will not share any information without permission from those who submit. News Briefs Teacher tests positive for COVID-19 On Sunday, teachers and staff received two emails from Superintendent of Schools Jeff Solan informing them that one school administrator from "the secondary school" was experi-

encing COVID-19-related symptoms, and another teacher had tested positive for the virus. The teacher is asymptomatic. The administrator has been tested but results were not back, as of Monday. The school system is following the protocol recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and the local health district.

According to Solan, the two individuals will self-quarantine for 14 days and are able to work remotely. He said these two cases will not impact the start of school.

Facilities assessment continues The newly formed School Modernization Committee received a status update from consultants Colliers International and Milone and MacBroom in regards to recent site visits to the school buildings. Site visits included all the schools, except for the high school.

summary, the biggest issue with Cheshire schools across all buildings lies with the “building envelope,” which includes the roof, windows, and doors. Warrington noted that the buildings cannot be properly renovated until there is “exterior envelope renovations.” Chapman Elementary and Dodd Middle School both have temperature issues. Chapman has one side of the school hotter than the other and Dodd’s second floor is hotter than the main floor on any given day. Other issues discussed included a lack of adequate parking at all the buildings, and the lack of ADA compliance for Humiston, which hosts Cheshire’s Alternative High School program.

porarily for clean-up. The Farmington Canal Linear Trail had many downed trees and branches blocking the path from a tropical storm early in August, and then Aug. 28 wind from Hurricane Laura caused most of the Farmington Linear Trail to be closed again as town crew worked to remove trees and limbs which could pose a threat to trail users. The trail was expected to be closed for about a week, according to town officials. Other trails owned and operated by the Cheshire Land Trust saw damage, too, with some blocked by a variety of tree damage and temporarily closed. Trails that remain open to the public are Brook Preserve on Sperry Road and Fresh Meadows wildlife sanctuary on Cook Hill Road. Ives Woodlands near Ives Farm had yet to be checked by crews at the time of publication.

Colliers Project Manager Chuck Warrington reported that while Cheshire schools are well maintained, that probably masks the underlying conditions of tired mechanical and electrical systems. According to Warrington’s

This is Carolyn’s department. She and her staff begin to bake at the crack of dawn each day. She makes cinnamon rolls and assorted pastries. Among the pies and individual hand pies are key lime, apple crumb, nectarine and berry combinations that have created a following big enough to keep the bakers busy. They will be busier yet with the return of Old Bishop Farm original cider donuts. The Torellos want Old Bishop Farm to be known as a “classic New England country store,” as a destination farm for those families in the community and surrounding towns. We want families to come here and make memories, said John, adding that he personally would like his ice cream to be a tradition with families. Carolyn would like to see families come to the farm to picnic and enjoy the beauty of the farm.

said. “As a teacher I naturally integrate an understanding of the importance of native plants into my students’ study of ecology and human effects on the environment,” Giddings said. “My awakening as a native plant gardener happened in the 1990s, when friends introduced me to the work of Sara Stein,” Gidding said, of the early pioneer in the planting of backyard ecosystems. “I was amazed by the increase in biodiversity when I added native plants to my tiny yard in Old Greenwich. First the insects came, then the birds, amphibians, reptiles, and finally the mammals.” Moving to Cheshire was driven by a desire for more room to garden and more public green spaces, Giddings said. “This is a great place to live for people who enjoy interacting with nature. I had been gradually

increasing the size of my pollinator garden by reclaiming lawn, but my growing concern about the insect apocalypse and environmental degradation have motivated me to pick up the pace.”

many species of butterflies and moths that are new to me and had dozens of baby birds raised in my yard this summer,” she said. “The established native plants are making it through this drought without a problem.”

Giddings believes environmental challenges are so great, that in the future “large lawns will become obsolete.” She explained that “turf grass provides little benefit to the ecosystem, and lawn chemicals negatively affect wildlife and pollute our groundwater.”

Why native plants? It’s because Connecticut’s plants and animals, including insects, evolved together, explained Giddings. “They have specialized relationships,” she said. “Insects need foliage, nectar, and pollen from the plants they evolved with, and they need those resources from early spring through late fall.

For her own Cheshire home, Giddings is replacing her lawn with native plants, using trees and shrubs to create a woodland on one side of the yard and a meadow garden on the other side with wildflowers, native grasses, and shrubs. “These native plants are drought tolerant, sequester carbon, and provide food for wildlife,” she said. “The increase in biodiversity in my yard is already remarkable. I've observed

Native trees are vital as well. “Birds rely heavily on caterpillars to feed their young, so if we want birds to thrive in our yards, we should grow native trees like oak, cherry, and willow, as well as shrubs and flowering plants that produce foliage, nectar, and pollen throughout the season.

Giddings is currently working on her Master Gardener certification through UConn’s program. She is active on social media sites, sharing ideas to incorporate native plants into the home garden. Additionally, Giddings is with Cheshire Land Trust’s team working on the September is a great time to Pollinator Pathway, a native plant new shrubs and peren- pollinator plant installation at Lock 12 on North nial flowers, said Giddings. Gardeners can plant goldenrod and asters to feed migrating monarch butterflies and other pollinators this fall, she said. A few helpful tips include “leave the leaves.” They provide habitat for overwintering moths, butterflies, and bees, and will decompose to improve your soil, she said. “You can still rake the leaves into a backyard garden bed or the wooded edge of your yard, and if you must, cut plant stems and gently place them underneath a bush or in a brush pile. I enjoy watching the many birds that visit my yard for wildflower seeds or to hunt for insects in my brush pile.”

Giddings is thoroughly enjoying her new home and garden in Cheshire. “I love all aspects of gardening, even the weeding, which is a sort of meditation for me. I call myself a backyard ecologist, because I just love watching the interaction among all the living members of an ecosystem, whether in my own yard, a pollinator garden, or a wild space. Being able to observe the entire lifecycle of butterflies, bumble bees, songbirds, and the many other visitors to my yard is fascinating,” she said.

Rediscovering the beauty of Mixville By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

I look at it this way, in the “new normal” of COVID-19, at least I have been able to revisit many Cheshire open spaces and town parks. The latest one is Mixville Recreation Area. I am embarrassed to admit that it took years after moving to Cheshire to find this place. I am directionally challenged and believe I ran into it by mistake. It’s located in a neighborhood that is onto itself. It has a whole different feel to it, too. Originally called Murphy’s Pond, the area was a key component in mills and manufacturing in the 19th Century. Since it’s hard to keep a good spot secret for too long, over the years the pond became more and more popular, a recreational magnet, and by the early 1960s, the town acquired the pond and land for the public’s use. Good move on their part.

Mixville was ready for its closeup on this particular visit. It was strikingly beautiful for our visit (the kid was there, too). The light was filtered, I think because a strong storm was expected by the afternoon. But the soft blue sky held fast against the incoming clouds and it made the pond, beach and field look all that more inviting. The kid and I headed straight to the top of the dam to begin our walk. We stopped for a moment

to enjoy the view and take pictures of the lake. A blue metal bench is set here. Feel free if you don’t want to go any further. It is perfect for anyone who just wants to take in the view and is satisfying enough. Continue on walking and you’re on the dam’s spillway, strolling along a short wooden plank boardwalk with sea green railings. Come down off the dam, and on the water’s edge is a See Joy, A9

rates (ordinary income or capital gains). A thorough understanding of taxation rules and a well-written agreement are needed so that the tax burden is where the divorcing spouses agreed and expected it to be. Stock benefits sometimes don’t appear on paystubs or tax returns and rarely provide immediately usable cash that can fund a divorce settlement. They can easily be overlooked or deliberately not disclosed. If you want to avoid leaving money on the table or, worse, having expectations of financial security thwarted, it is smart to use the services of qualified legal and financial professionals to look for, account for and divide stock options, restricted stock and other forms of employment stock interests. Bottom line: dealing with employment stock benefits is not a “do it yourself” project. Lisa J. Cappalli is Counsel at the law firm of Freed Marcroft, LLC, which has offices in Cheshire and Hartford. prolific sight of cattails, sumac and pink-headed, spotted Joe Pye weed stretching up to the sky. Lily pads are dominant on the water with a few flowering, white lilies. Before you can count to 10, you must take a turn to the right and round the corner to follow the mowed grass that is the unmarked walking trail. It wraps around the pond. Towering white pines and hemlocks edge the leftside of this wide grassy expanse. I am surprised by the riparian border surrounding the pond. We see native flowers, shrubs and trees. Among them are summer sweet, silky dogwood, black cherry, hazel alder, fox grape, black walnut, black locust, boneset and New York ironweed. There’s also chokeberry and buttonbush and other pollinator selections. (If I sound like a forester, do know that I have a plant app on my phone.) There are some of the usual bad guys, too, the invasive plants. These I know by heart. It is oriental bittersweet and autumn olive and mugwort. Stroll along the riparian buffer and catch breaks in the plantings that allow for scenic views across the lake to the forested ridgeline (probably the lower portion of Prospect Ridge), the beach and beyond.

I must have stopped every other step just to check out a plant or flower or admire this and that. I am sure I was probably annoying, dawdling as I was (does anyone say “dawdling” anymore?), it was a short amount of time before we had to make a choice. Remember this trail is unmarked and if I forgot to mention it, there is a whole neighborhood on the perimeter of the property. There are no fences, and the expanse of mowed grass now sweeps from the line of houses to where we stand on the trail.

see that angry swan?” my kid asks. “Yes, but why do you say angry?” “Aren’t all swans angry,” she said. Hmm. I believe she might be correct.

I am unsure if we go straight or turn the bend to follow the water’s edge.

We spy another swan. This one is in front of a cute little island. “Hey, it’s Angry Swan Island,” I quip. The kid points out another even smaller island, and she says snidely, “There’s actually two islands.” Yes,” I remark. “That’s for when the angry swans get really ticked off at each other. After a big bickering, they just stomp off to their own island to cool off.”

Commonsense overturns my idea of boldly going where no mom has gone before and I follow the kid and around the bend toward the water. Just as well. We walk into a narrow corridor, squished between an unkempt area and more native and invasive shrubs along the water. There are more viewing portals. We see a lone white swan. “Do you

We reach a “T” in the trail and since the left is blocked by a fallen limb, we go right, which leads us onto a platform of sturdy steppingstones, stamped with a Boy Scout emblem and the numbers “198.” It takes us to dry land where you can walk over to the sandy beach, or go to the fishing area, take a seat and look out over the water.

A community with no local A new kind of school bus safety newspaper? That’s bad news. One of many uncertainties surrounding the opening of school in the era of the coronavirus pandemic is the school bus. It’s going to be a different experience for students and those in charge of seeing them transported to and from school safely. That means masks, obviously. Students will be required to wear them, and officials from local school districts say a mask will be provided on board the bus if a student doesn’t have one.

Another added expense this year will result from the twice a day cleaning following morning and afternoon runs. The aim is to establish safe routines. “The key priority here is just to help ensure that students are boarding the bus with their masks on and to serve as overseers of the mask wearing during the bus ride,” said Vincent Masciana, chief operating officer for Cheshire schools.

What would my town be without a newspaper? If you haven’t asked yourself that question, perhaps it is time to consider just what the newspaper means to this community.

The most obvious is the community’s access to news about itself: The workings of its town hall; information about taxes and property values; the operation of schools for its children; the achievements, or the criminal activities, of local residents; the scores of local ball teams; schedules and reviews of movies, concerts, restaurants and books; and the offerings of local small businesses.

Eversource contends it was not unprepared for tropical storm By Susan Haigh Associated Press

Top officials from Eversource defended the electric, gas and water utility’s response to Tropical Storm Isaias, which knocked out power to about 1 million homes and businesses across Connecticut this month, arguing Thursday, Aug. 27 it was well-prepared and has taken steps to improve its reliability since prior major storms. CEO Jim Judge told state legislators he understands many customers are angry about the company’s response, but said the storm turned out to be “more impactful and widespread than anybody expected,” creating three times the maximum damage that had been projected. “Nobody, nobody that I’m aware of, predicted that Connecticut people would see a storm with impacts significantly bigger than Superstorm Sandy or Irene,” Judge said, noting there was a “huge logistics effort” to restore power that was made more challenging because of coronavirus safety protocols. Some customers lost power for more than a week. “We had more line crews working the restoration effort than we’ve ever had before on an event on our system — more than Irene, more than Sandy and more than the October 2011 storm,” he said, adding how the number of restoration crews was tripled within the first 48 hours after Isaias hit Connecticut on Aug. 4. Judge was one of several top Eversource executives who testified during a virtual informational hearing, originally organized by the General Assembly’s Energy and Technology Committee to examine a controversial electric rate increase that occurred shortly before the storm hit. Connecticut regulators in July ordered Eversource, the state’s largest electric utility, to temporarily suspend a rate increase that appeared in customers’ July bills and immediately restore rates to their June 30 levels so an investigation could be conducted into whether customers were being overcharged. The Public Utilities Regulatory Au-

thority, which is also examining Eversource’s storm response, had received numerous letters and complaints from customers shocked by their larger-than-normal electric bills, some twice as much as they usually pay. Eversource has said were driven primarily by a significant increase in summer energy use and two recent delivery fee increases. On Aug. 27, Judge said the average bill increased by $62, with $55 of that attributed to increased usage when many people were working from home during hot weather. But much of the discussion during last week’s hearing focused on Eversource’s response to the storm. Legislators accused the company of not communicating well with municipal officials about restoration efforts, not giving restoration crews clear orders on where they were needed, and creating a perception that the company cares more about shareholders than customers. There were also concerns raised that not enough improvements have been made since a state panel released a report in 2012 that included dozens of recommendations for improving emergency preparation in Connecticut, including improved worst-case planning and staffing by the state’s utilities. “It is very frustrating to read some of their findings that could have been easily applied to the storm response here. So what’s changing with this company in the culture?” asked Rep. David Arconti, D-Danbury, the committee’s co-chairman. “These are the same things that have been said for the past few years,” he added. State Sen. Norm Needleman, D-Essex, the committee’s other co-chairman, said legislators hope to enact some immediate reforms that strengthen regulators’ powers and send a “clear message to all the ratepayers in the state and to the utilities” in a planned, upcoming special session. He said larger changes will likely be addressed when the General Assembly is See Storm, A16

‘We think it’s safe; we think it’s logical’ Fall sports will proceed, including football, but COVID numbers will dictate how far the season advances By Bryant Carpenter Record-Journal staff

CHESHIRE — Tackle football is a go. Ditto for indoor girls volleyball. Every fall sport, for that matter, got the green light in the new high school sports reopening plan the CIAC unveiled late Wednesday night, Aug. 26 and further explained in a press conference the following morning.

Football, recommended to be 7-on-7 by the state Department of Health, will be the traditional full-contact 11-on-11. The CIAC maintains the state’s low COVID numbers justify trying to play a season now, as compared to waiting until late winter or early spring, when the numbers are projected to be higher.

Department of Education’s “Indicators for Consideration of Learning Models,” which give guidance for in-school, hybrid and distance learning.

The debate is not over and the plan unveiled on Aug. 26 gives the CIAC and DPH more time to hash out differences.

The leading indicator in that model is the seven-day average of new cases per 100,000 people. The secondary indicators are seven-day averages of percent test positivity, new hospitalizations and COVID-like illnesses reported at emergency rooms.

Lungarini noted that providing sports for athletes through school is less risky than kids playing on their own, where social distancing and other precautions are less likely to be followed. In that regard, Lungarini made an appeal to athletes.

At the press conference, Lungarini made it a point to stress that the CIAC is not defying the state’s wishes.

A color-coded chart included “We have an opportunity to in the CIAC plan breaks play together, but to do that you have to commit to Volleyball, recommended by down the numbers: school, your family and DPH to be played outdoors, n Low-risk (favors in-school your team and you have to will remain indoors for safelearning): Less than 10 perBottom line? “We want, very clear, our message to be: We are listening to the recommendations that are coming from the Department of Health, we are aligning in many ways with the recommendations of the Department of Health,” Lungarini said. “We still have some questions and we still have some areas that we feel need to be explored as we go forward.” The DPH is sticking with its stance on football and volleyball. Acting Commissioner Dr. Diedre Gifford said, “Those recommendations are unlikely to change. We’ve been consistent.” The state appears to be entrusting the CIAC to make the call. Gov. Ned Lamont echoed the DPH position on football and the decision in other states to push football to late winter/early spring. “That said, we do tend to leave these decisions up to the local leads and I think what they prudently said is, ‘Let’s do some practice for the next few weeks, then we’ll make up our mind in terms of competition later on in September,’” said Lamont. “I hope they make the right decision.”
