CHESHIRE HIGH SCHOOL
Class of 2020 graduates, at last By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff
Classmates and teachers were reunited one last time for the Cheshire High School Class of 2020 commencement ceremony on Sunday after still another change in plans. The original commencement set for Aug. 2 at the Farmington Polo Club was rained out. The Aug. 4 rain date was postponed to Aug. 6 because of Tropical Storm Isaias. However, the storm did so much damage in town the ceremony was moved to Sunday, Aug. 9. Then, on Friday, Superintendent of Schools Jeff Solan emailed students that some members of the school community had tested
positive for COVID-19. In collaboration with the Chesprocott Health District, school officials decided a drive-up ceremony was the safest way to award diplomas and the plan for an in-person event was scrapped.

Instead, the approximately 345 graduating seniors were only able to leave their vehicles during the ceremony to pick up diplomas and pose for photos.
Connor Ford said, that while all graduation ceremonies are bitter-

Storm recovery will take time and money ‘I’m glad it’s over’ Local homeowners assess damage By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
The Fitzgerald family heard an eerie crackling sound at around 3:30 on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 4. The sound was the falling and twisting of a massive chestnut tree on the roof of their Nob Hill Road home. See Damage, A2
Like much of the state, Cheshire experienced significant damage and power outages due to Tropical Storm Isaias that blew through Connecticut Aug. 4. The weather event included wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour and damaged trees and downed hundreds of powerlines throughout the area. The town and state declared a state of emergency and federal aid, through FEMA, will be requested to deal with the restoration and extra police and town crew overtime.
To illustrate the impact of the storm, here are a few details from the early days of recovery. Thousands of Cheshire residents lost electricity, with 95 percent of the town without power on Wednesday, Aug. 5 and 8,600 Cheshire residents still in the dark Aug. 6 as Eversource estimated 3,700 would have power back on by the end of that day. By Monday, all but a few hundred residents, had power restored. See Storm, A2

“That was the biggest tree on our property,” Matt Fitzgerald said. “The tree was so big the tree company has to rent a crane.” The tree remained on the home Wednesday afternoon. Damage From A2
Bailey, who works in employee benefits in the insurance business, has lived in Cheshire for all 50 years of his life. He said this storm ranks among the most damaging that have ripped through town in the last half century. “It’s up there,” Bailey said. “I didn’t expect the wind to be that strong. We were lucky the ground was dry because it could have been worse. But there were trees all over the place. The uncertainty is how long we will be without power. The thought of not having power for a week adds to the stress.”
‘Like a bomb went off’ Over on Contour Drive, Joe Krutz and his family can’t go in his back yard because there are so many tree limbs piled up. Krutz, who has lived in Cheshire for 25 years, lost power around 2:15 Tuesday afternoon.
The Krutzes didn’t sustain any damage to their house or vehicles, but his property is a mess. “We have two really big trees and our back yard looks like a bomb went off,” Krutz said. “There’s limbs everywhere. It’s comical. Huge tree branches everywhere. I can’t see out of my back porch.” The two trees remain standing, but their branches were strewn about the Krutzes’ yard. Krutz said he plans on getting what’s left of the trees cut down. “We are lucky,” Krutz said. “We only lost power. We have friends who had trees fall on their cars and houses. I consider us very lucky.” Krutz has taught health and physical education at Cheshire High for the past 25 years. He also is an assistant on the Cheshire football and boys lacrosse teams. “In 2011, we lost a big tree that fell in my neighbor’s pool,” Krutz said. “This is a lot more spread out. But there’s nothing we can do. We need a bucket loader and numerous chainsaws.”
Close call On Peck Lane, Coleen Bankowski’s massive tulip tree fell down at 3:49 Tuesday. The family was outside recording video of the wind at 3:45 and four minutes lat-

er went inside and watched the tree fall. It fell and landed on a tree and remains resting there as the family plans to have it removed. “The wind was whipping around like crazy,” Bankowski said. “Tops of the trees were swinging back and forth. It tipped over and came up from the roots and everything. We went out right away to look. But it sounded precarious outside and we thought it was best to run back in the house. You could hear trees snapping left and right. We had lost power around 3:30 p.m.”

Fall sports will play, but with limitations On Friday, July 31, the Connecticut high school sports community went online in large numbers to find an update on the status of fall athletics. After working in committees for the last few months, the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Con-
ference put out an 11-page plan that allows schools to return to action in all sports despite the ongoing pandemic. All teams will play fewer games, closer to home, under the plan. Football teams will be limited to six games, with no Thanksgiving contests.
The CIAC also wants schools to come up with a COVID-19 Advisory Committee to address health and safety issues.

The CIAC emphasized a gradual increase in participation. This summer, teams have been allowed to have a
“I like the idea of cohorts of 15 to allow coaches to develop teams,” said Cheshire High School Athletic Direc-
tor Steve Trifone. “As long as everybody practices social distancing guidelines, I think it can work.”
In the new plan, programs will be able to start skill “I think it is a good plan to work in cohorts of 15 on give our athletes a chance to Aug. 27. The three-week play a fall sports season,” conditioning plan will add said Wilcox Athletic Director full-team contact practices Steve Wodarski. “The CIAC beginning Sept. 11. Practice time will increase to a maximum of two hours per session. While feeling that the CIAC has done a good job gradually building the conditioning hours, Platt High School Athletic Director Rich Katz has reservations about the football contact time being limited to 10 minutes per athlete in practice. “I think the amount of contact time is unsafe and deficient,” said Katz. “I don’t see how you can keep to that (guideline).” Katz would have preferred the CIAC flip the fall and spring sports seasons.

football, while they are smaller in the spring,” explained Katz. “If this is the plan, we’ll make it work.” In the CIAC guidelines, cross country, field hockey, soccer, girls’ swimming and diving, and volleyball teams will be allowed to play 12 regularseason games, while football teams are being limited to six. Football programs can play once per week, while the other sports will be allowed to compete twice. Cheerleaders are asked to stick to sideline cheers and not perform stunts. If postseason tournaments can be run safely, contests will run from Oct. 29 through Nov. 15. With the condensed schedule, there will be no football played during Thanksgiving week.
Trifone said that he has spoken with Southington Athletic Director Steve Risser about playing their rivalry game in the regular season. Wodarski added that he will try to schedule a powder puff game for the girls at Wilcox Tech. This fall, all schools are asked to come up with a regional schedule between just CIAC programs. On Monday, league directors are getting together to talk about new schedules. Regional play was chosen to limit and mitigate the possible spread of the coronavirus.

Coaches, media, and administrators will be allowed inside.” Cheshire High School has installed cameras on Alumni Field and in the gyms, so that people can watch the games over the National Federation of High Schools Sports Network.
“I understand the reasoning behind it, but with a tech school, it is going to be hard for us to compete with teams like Platt and Maloney,” said Wodarski. “We are going to have to look for other tech schools.”

consideration is likely to result in wasted money and time and an unsatisfactory divorce resolution. Digging deep and identifying goals is difficult, especially during stressful times. Science actually supports this. That’s why when first discussing goals, many clients ask me to tell them what they should want. The problem with this is that I’m not them. What is important to me isn’t necessarily important to them. It explains why clients often respond emotionally with “make them pay” or “drag it out.” Or say what they think they are supposed to want - like lifetime alimony, the house or full custody. A key part of a lawyer’s job is to build and implement an effective efficient legal strategy to achieve what the client wants. The reality is that a lawyer can’t do this without knowing that person’s thoroughly considered and specific goals – what they want

their divorce and post-divorce life to look like. My practice is to spend time and attention with each client early on to help them fully develop their unique goals. With a prioritized goal list in hand, a lawyer can begin to build a successful strategy. Then, throughout the case, re-visit, re-evaluate and adjust the strategy as needed. Life doesn’t stop because a divorce has started. With specific goals and a strategy designed to achieve these, a lawyer can assist their client evaluate life decisions during the case. For example, what would be the impact of accepting a job promotion or moving in with a significant other. Developing goals is also critical for a person trying to decide whether to divorce in the first place. So too for anyone returning to court after a divorce because the existing order isn’t being obeyed or their situation has changed.
The reasons are similar. Short on time with an already endless to do list, the last thing a divorcing person may want to devote attention to is developing goals. But working closely with a lawyer committed to a goal approach will almost certainly result in a more satisfactory divorce process and beneficial outcome. Lisa J. The egg sandwich of my dreams Today I had the best egg sandwich ever. This is not an egg sandwich I make at home. It’s an egg sandwich from a local eatery. I have had this egg sandwich before. However, it has been a long time. I know I sound weird, but I dream about this sandwich. I will say that since the very first time I had this egg sandwich, I have held it as the standard bearer to all others. Today the kid and I were out and about early and once done with our errands we found ourselves in need of food. It also was that in-be-
tween time, the time where you can either have lunch or breakfast. Best of all we had time to go to Frank Salvatore’s The Notch. Yes, The Notch is an icon in Cheshire. The family first opened its doors in 1921. That was back when the trolley was running (before my time). The store sits at the notch, cut into the ridgeline, where the road to Prospect, Route 68, runs up the mountain. The Notch is a must for anyone in need of breakfast, lunch, coffee, a newspaper, or a smile from Frank and a small chat on the day’s doings. See Joy, A13

sweet, the Class of 2020’s was especially so since many of his peers hadn’t seen each other since schools were closed in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Graduate Nathaniel Buntin smiles in his family’s vehicle after receiving his diploma during a drive-thru graduation ceremony Sunday at Cheshire High School.
“It’s a little weird, it’s sort of an unbelievable experience because of everything that’s been happening,” he said. Ford said he felt school officials had done the best they could with the ceremony under the circumstances. Still, he wished that an earlier plan to have an in-person graduation ceremony on the football field could have come to fruition. With all the shifts in plans, Sarah McManus said it was a stressful week to cap off a chaotic senior year for her son, Liam McManus, but she believes he and his peers learned to persevere in the process. “It’s definitely not traditional and not what I had envisioned, but the last six months have certainly taught us to be flexible,” she said. “This class will certainly be able to roll with the punches and I think they’ve been a great class.” “I would loved to have had a senior experience, but you have to be safe,” Liam McManus said. dleithyessian@record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian

A hand-lettered sign, done in perfect script, is poised above the entrance and proudly announces, Frank Salvatore, Proprietor, with the tagline, “The Best Breakfast and Lunch Specials in Town.” Once we step inside, I notice there have been changes since I was here last. I wish I could remember when that was. “Did you renovate?” I ask Frank. “Yes. Last year,” he adds. Has been that long since I have been here? Now I feel bad. The place looks beautiful. What is that on the wall, I ask him, pointing to the eclectic piece of wall art. See Joy, A14
