Milldale Train Depot signal restored by volunteers By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff

Over a century after its installation, the train-order signal at the Milldale Train Depot is again in working condition. But instead of locomotives passing by the 25-foot mast, it is bikers and runners on the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail. Restored over two years by volunteers who help run the depot, the order signal used two red and white painted blades and articulating colored lenses over a lamp to let trains know if they needed to stop or could pass through. When a train needed to stop, the station agent would operate one of two levers to move one blade and See Signal, A11

Vehicle thefts increase locally, statewide

According to Chief Neil Dryfe, motor vehicle theft has been on the rise, but this

trend is something the entire state is experiencing. In Cheshire, as of June 30, there had been 23 cars stolen as compared to eight during the same time period last year. This number includes: two cases of vehicles being used without permission; and four cases involving motorcycles or dirt bikes. Of the 17

cars taken from Cheshire residents, all had been left unlocked, and 15 had keys or the key fob located inside the vehicle. At this time, 15 of the 17 vehicles have been recovered: seven in Waterbury, three in Hartford, two in Southington, and one each in Shelton, Hamden and New Britain.

COMMENTARY

A recreation area worth exploring By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

I am not one to sit still for long — at least not when there is an adventure to be had. Naturally, when I told my hubby I was taking him to a new place to walk and we happen to be into something like day 300 of a heatwave, he is worried. Okay, maybe he is really frowning.

of leaves in his mouth by the end of the trip, that I could count him out. A fence is up ahead. I say something about barbed wire. “If there’s barbed wire, I am out of here,” says the hubby. “You won’t give me a leg up?” I ask. “Yes, I will give you a leg up,” he agrees, “and then I’ll leave.” Wise guy.

Looking down the line of fence, I think I see a kiosk. We head for a break in the fence. It is a kiosk. Jackpot! water, too. Last July, when hubby and I canoed it from Route 322, there was a sufficient volume of water and a fairly good flow. Not today. Nevertheless, what a picturesque walking trail this is. Altogether, it is a little more than a mile in length. The trail looks like it is wellmaintained. Woodland fern and sensitive fern made an abundant carpet of soft green as the trail hugged the river. Our feet made no sound over most of the loose sandy path. The exception? When we were not paying attention to tree roots that crisscrossed the trail and we stumbled. Sometimes you could not help it though. There was so much to see. I looked for fish and did not see any, not even in the little pockets of water. No animals either, but I bet if we were out early enough in the day, we would see a lot of activity. There were plenty of birds making calls and songs way up in the trees. As I said, the forest began with beech trees, their canopy a mile high. Tree species then gave way to hemlocks, black and white oaks, Chestnut oak, rock elm, Northern red oak and more. Since it is July, it is mushroom time. My hubby and I

know nothing about mushrooms, so we do not touch, and we definitely do not taste them, but woodland mushrooms are beautiful to look at. Among the ‘shrooms, we saw petite orange-red capped chanterelles and a small, white Amanita mushroom with a big top-hat cap. Assorted shrubs and vines like northern spicebush and fox grape vine also lined the path. I was curious about the fox grape vine and it turns out the flowers are a fabulous pollinator plant for the long-tongued honeybees and bumblebees. Then there is the fruit, which is highly desirable for the Ruffed Grouse, Bobwhite and Northern Flicker to name a few. Mammals also like the fruit. That would include bears, coyotes and of course, fox. We came around to what was the last bit of walking trail and caught sight of a

lone kayaker. The Q-River Canoe Trail launch and putout area is a little farther down from where the walking trail comes out, so he had a bit to go. We exited just below the water pollution plant. The grass path was mowed and either side of the path was lined with goldenrod and wild blackberry, which I gladly sampled without worry. Catching up with the kayaker at the top of the hill, we asked if he bottomed out much. “Only the whole way,” he said sheepishly, confessing that this was a spur-ofthe-moment idea. Hubby and I crossed the soccer fields to get back to the car. We both agreed that this spur-of-the-moment trek was really worth it and we’ll be back soon. We think you would like it, too. Chesprocott Health District seeks volunteers Will you help your community during a public health emergency? If so, Chesprocott Health District invites you to a volunteer orientation session at Wolcott Youth Center, 48 Todd Road, Wolcott, on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The sessions runs from 6 to 8 p.m. The purpose of this orientation session is to inform at-

tendees of the actions CHD staff and volunteers take to ensure the communities of Cheshire, Prospect and Wolcott are prepared for a declared public health emergency. Such an emergency can span a broad range of situations, including natural hazards, acts of terrorism and infectious-disease outbreaks.

In the event of a public health emergency that requires some form of medical intervention, Chesprocott Health District and volunteers are responsible for providing medical countermeasures to the public. The Sept. 8 volunteer orientation session will focus on the planning and activities needed to prepare volun-

teers for mass dispensing operations. Chesprocott Health District and the towns of Prospect, Cheshire and Wolcott rely on volunteers with both medical and non-medical experience – doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, nurse assistants, and working professionals who have experience

in public health, security, safety, technology, transportation, planning and office administration. If you are interested in attending this volunteer oorientation, RSVP by calling 203-272-2761. For more information, visit CHD’s website or Facebook page. — Press Release

If the blade facing an incoming train was angled downward, the train could pass. If it was parallel with the ground it meant that the conductor needed to stop.

A new electric lamp is also being installed. The original burned oil, but was eventually replaced with an electric bulb while the station was in operation. “It should be especially magical at dusk when you can see it lit up,” said Assistant Stationmaster Robert Belletzkie. “ … that may be the best part of this thing: seeing it lit up like 100 years ago. State House candidate urges legislature to take action on budget woes Pam Salamone, Republican candidate for state representative in the 103rd District (Cheshire, Southington and Wallingford) recently urged legislative leaders to address Connecticut’s growing fiscal crisis during the upcoming special session. “I am stunned that the legislature would reconvene without addressing this impending fiscal tsunami,” said Salamone in a letter to the Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate. “The consensus report prepared by Governor Lamont and the Office of Fiscal Analysis projects a massive budget deficit of nearly $7 billion over the next three years. We must respond to those numbers now, by beginning the difficult but essential work of reducing state spending.”

For nearly 30 years — since passage of Lowell Weicker’s state income tax — Connecticut has been dead last in the country in economic growth.” Salamone, a mother of four who lives in Cheshire, entered the race for state representative to help change direction in our state. “My father was a small businessman, as is my husband, Mike,” said Salamone. “I know how to draw up a budget, and how to stick to it. I want to restore economic opportunity in Connecticut — that requires sending people to the Capitol who know how to live within their means.

LeDay and Rumble had tried CBD products and found that they helped them both physically and mentally.

“You don't know what you are getting,” she said. “In some cases they may not be CBD products. CBD products are not regulated and there are a lot of counterfeit and mislabeled products. Our products are third party, lab tested.”

“We’ve been using CBD products for three or four years,” LeDay said. “Shannon had chronic back pain, I was a teacher for six years and had carpal tunnel syndrome. I also had slight anxiety.” LeDay explained that cannabidiol (CBD) “is a non-psychoactive, naturally-occurring compound extracted from hemp plants, that does not create a chemical high and is non-addictive.” “[W]e invite you to sit down with us and give you an educational background of CBD products,” LeDay said. “We invite you to learn about CBD even if you are not interested in the products. A mild winter means we will probably have a bountiful tick season this summer. If you have a dog who has access to the woods and fields in your area, you may have noticed an increase in the number of ticks he or she attracts. Ticks have the potential to infect your dog with a number of serious diseases.

Janet Gonzalez, of Meriden, swims in the Hubbard Park pool on Sunday, July 26. Nearly a month after its delayed opening, the pool has frequently reached the maximum capacity of 50 guests. To limit the spread of Coronavirus, Connecticut has limited public pools to operating at half capacity. Devin Leith-Yessian, Record-Journal

Heat wave makes swimming pools a cool alternative Area pools have been busy with the recent heat wave. Meriden has seen an uptick in swimmers, and Southington has been steady. Plainville and Berlin pools have been filled to their reduced capacity with temperatures in the 90s for several days. Southington’s Memorial Park and Recreation Park pools opened on June 27. Southington Director of Recreation Dave Lapreay said the summer has been a success so far for the town’s two public pools. “Thing are going really well,” Lapreay said. “We’ve had some busy days, but all in all we’ve had our guidelines and people have been accepting them. We are happy with the way things have gone and we are hoping that will continue in the

coming weeks.”

Recreation and Memorial parks allow 50 people at a time at each pool. Once they hit capacity, new swimmers aren’t allowed until others leave. Lapreay said this has only happened a handful of times. “It’s been so hot, people come for an hour and cool off and then leave,” Lapreay said. The pools are open only to Southington residents, seven days a week. Hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m., and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the weekend. In Meriden, the Hubbard Park pool opened on July 1 and has been busier than expected. “Everything is going great,” Meriden Recreation Coordinator Kathy Matula said. “It’s much more See Pools, A22

Day rates are $5.00/resident $10/non-resident. Anyone coming into the building without an active pass must pay the day rate even if they are not going in the water. Both swimmers and spectators are included in the count for the number of people allowed in the facility. Showers are not available

Masks or cloth face coverings are required in the facility, but not in the pool and the six foot social distance rule applies for those not from the same household. In Berlin, Percival Pool opened on July 1. Typically, Berlin has both of its public pools open in the summer, but just Percival is open in 2020 to town residents only. Debbie Dennis, Berlin’s Superintendent of Recreation said things are going well. “It’s a little different with the one pool open and restrictions,” Dennis said. The capacity is 35 people. Monday through Friday there are three sessions available, noon to 1:45 p.m.; 2:30 to 4:15 p.m. and 5 to 6:45 p.m. On the weekends, swimmers are welcome noon to 1:45 p.m. and 2:30 to 4:15 p.m. Reservations are required. “It’s a change for everyone,” Dennis said. “We have a person that reminds swimmers to wear masks when they are not in the water and also (make sure) that people stay in their designated spots that are separated by household.” The pool is cleaned between sessions. In Plainville, Elizabeth Berner Pool at Norton Park opened on June 20. The pool is also just open to town residents. There are two blocks of time each day, from noon to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. The splash pad is also open. “So far things are going well,” Plainville Recreation Director Courtney Hewett said. “It’s a different situation and everyone is getting used to our new system. We’ve heard good feedback. People are happy the pool is open.”

Animal shelters see increased interest in adoption

When the pandemic hit, adopting and fostering animals became more popular. With more spare time and being home more often, many decided it was time to bring an animal into their life.

Animal shelters has finally slowed and they are not taking on any new foster homes. “The adoption process has slowed … potential adopters need to come in now by appointment,” said Mark Bailey, a member of the board of directors and volunteer coordinator at The Animal Haven. “... We currently are not doing home checks and home visits, meaning we need other ways of being assured a particular home is set up as the right fit.” At the Meriden Humane Society adoptions continue to be steady.

this also slows down adoption. Whereas we can suggest other animals to qualified applicants, often they have their hearts set on a particular dog or cat.” When deciding if they are ready to adopt or foster an animal, shelters are encouraging people to realize it is is a long term commitment. “We try to make sure people are thinking long term and not just during the pandemic,” Rogers said. “Once the pandemic is over, things sort of go back to normal, the animal is still there and the animal still needs to be cared for and still needs people around.” “Make sure that you have all of the accommodations for that pet as well,” said Heather Bearz, owner of Cheshire Cat & Dog, Too. “A crate, certain items. It makes the transition from a dog going from a shelter that is very very noisy and then going into a home, where they are going to have direct one on one contact with the owner.”

COVID-19 has meant other changes for shelters.

When the animal is transitioning to the new home, new owners need to have patience.

“I think that shelters, for sure, ourselves included, are definitely struggling with the fact that a lot of our fundraising events and adoption events have been cancelled and we’re not able to be open to the public in the same kind of walk-in and fall in love with the animal and then apply a type of system,” Annis said. With the increase in adoption inquiries, the process has had to slow down at many shelters. “We also have more applications to adopt than usual, meaning application review takes longer,” Bailey said. “... On the surface this may seem like a good thing, but in almost every case the adoption applicant has a specific cat or dog in mind, and any particular animal, therefore, can have a few or many applications that need to be carefully weighed —

“Newly adopted animals are making a huge adjustment from shelter life — and even from a foster home — and need time to decompress and feel safe,” Bailey said. “They won’t understand the patterns and routines that seem second nature to their new family, but they often will try incredibly hard to please.” Adopting or fostering an animal is like a relationship, according to Bearz. “It is almost like dating somebody,” Bearz said. “You need to get to know them, whether they are going to treat you well and once that happens, once you have that great relationship with each other, then it’s how it’s supposed to be.” jsimms@record-journal.com 203-317-2208 Twitter: @jessica_simms99

SUBSCRIBE. DONATE. ADVERTISE. During times of crisis, crucial information about your community comes from local reporters. Access to high quality information is essential. Especially local information. And especially now. What’s happening in our communities? What’s the impact? How are our local leaders responding? For answers to these questions, we rely on the hard work of our local reporters. As a result, readership of local news outlets has reached record highs.

But due to COVID-19, most local news publications are losing money, fast. Advertising has plummeted during the crisis and readers aren’t subscribing fast enough to fill the void. This has led to thousands of local reporters being laid off. Just as our society faces numerous, urgent challenges. Millions of people are in danger of losing access to the authoritative local

information they need to stay informed. That’s why the Local Media Association and the Local Media Consortium are working with local news providers to build a strong future for local journalism. And that’s why our long-time partner Google is purchasing ads like this in local publications across the country, as well as providing a Relief Fund to help struggling local news outlets. But those actions alone aren’t enough.

Please consider supporting the local news organizations you rely on. Subscribe to them. Donate to them. And if you have a business that’s able to, advertise with them. Your support is critical to sustaining the dedicated journalists serving your communities. Our local news outlets help keep us safer. Let’s help keep them open.
