Local veterans reflect on final days of World War II By Barry Tomlinson

We all know how World War II ended 75 years ago, but we may not realize it could have ended very differently. I will take readers behind the scenes using the stories of two Cheshire veterans, now residing at Elim Park, who survived the final days of the war. Their stories reveal why it ended differently than anyone expected, and why that matters today.

Life-changing events It was July 1945. Dick Shank was a naval officer serving on a destroyer in the Pacific. Sailor Louis Forsell was working a signal tower in the Philippines. A chain reaction of lifechanging events was on the horizon for both men as the war entered its final days. They were preparing for Operation Downfall, the code name for the invasion of mainland Japan. American forces knew how difficult it had been to gut

Around the time Collins took on hosting duties for the July 16 online gala event “An Evening in White,” with Ball & Socket Arts, The Cheshire Citizen sat down with him to talk about radio and life here in Cheshire. Collins works as production director for iHeart Radio in Hartford where he makes sure the commercials get on the air and he collaborates with multiple teams within the radio group to “create the best radio commercials for our clients.” He is also, though, an on-air personality at

Over 88 percent of the families who responded to a twoquestion survey indicated they preferred a full return to school, over remote learning. School districts are required to submit reopening plans to the state by July 24. Local officials are not ruling out the possibility of early dismissals or remote learning.

The plan outlines two paths that parents can choose for the coming fall months: Either they can opt for in-person learning where the child is sent to school where guidelines for masks, modified classes and no locker use will be in place, or they can choose to continue remote learning. Bears entering Conn. homes at unprecedented rate Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff

Wildlife encounters have been spiking thus far this year, including as many bears entering peoples’ homes in June as all of 2019 combined. “Some of these interactions have been serious, including bears entering homes and gravely injuring both leashed and unleashed dogs,” says a statement from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. “Already in 2020

(through July 8) DEEP has received more reports of bears entering homes (25) than in any previous year and we are on track to triple the average number of home entries of 2018 and 2019.” Bears rarely harm humans and most local interactions with them involve damaged bird feeders and tipped over garbage containers and grills, said Cheshire Animal Control Officer April Leiler. When she does respond to a call, it’s usually to ensure that the bear doesn’t make it onto a major road like Route

10, where it can be struck by a vehicle. “We haven't had any real issues with bears. We do sometimes have them getting into unsecured trash and we do have them ripping down bird feeders,” she said. Cheshire only has a few bears living in the area, Leiler said, but since it’s a more densely populated region they tend to be spotted more often. Residents should still be taking precautions to deter bears from approaching residential areas, however, and she walks callers through the recommendations DEEP has to remove attractants like food outdoors, and even indoors in cases where bears are more of a hazard. “If you have the slider open and you’re making brownies and there’s just a screen between them and the deck and the kitchen they’re going to come in,” she said.

860-748-0541•phoenicianhi.com Experience Our Professional Difference!

The DEEP statement says that removing food that attracts bears is the most important step to making one’s home less attractive to scavengers like bears, since they have a strong sense of smell and can remember a food source for years. Not only will they return to homes where they were able to successfully find unsecured food in the past, over time bears will lose their fear of humans. Regularly cleaning trash bins, removing bird feeders between late March and November, avoiding leaving pet food outdoors and keeping dogs on a leash when outdoors, can all curtail interactions with bears. “Black bears should never be fed — either intentionally or unintentionally,” said Jenny Dickson, DEEP Wildlife Division director. “Bears that are attracted to homes by easily-accessible foods lose their fear of humans. Such bears spend more time in neighborhoods and near

According to an interactive map on the DEEP website, over 5,000 bear sightings in Connecticut have been reported thus far in 2020.

Carefree Living with Confidence

Now might be the perfect time to make your move to Elim Park!

“When we moved to Elim Park we found many new friends, who now have become family to us during the pandemic. We have united here. And, I realize that we could never have gone through this living in our previous home.” —Residents Jim and Roberta Sansone

Most of the sightings occur in the northwest of the state, with Avon, Farmington, Simsbury and Torrington each reporting over 200 sightings. Leiler said most of the calls for animal sightings she’s received this year have been for bobcats, coyotes and foxes around their homes. Since instances of humans and pets being injured by wildlife is so rare, she recommends homeowners who want to deter them from their property to haze them by throwing tennis balls and creating a racket with pots and pans.

Then we would get home and “put everything up.” That is an old-time phrase which means to can, freeze or otherwise put the food into long-term storage. Its purpose is to let you relive the glorious day of summer when you originally picked it. Okay, so I made that part up. But I sincerely feel that way. But while you might get third degree burns, at least your kitchen wouldn’t blow up. I prefer freezing. Now that is safe. The worst thing that could happen is that you slam your thumb in the freezer door. You can freeze anything and everything. Fruit and veggies do fine this way. See Joy, A10

friends and doing something that you love.” Miss Chantel’s, 606 Pomeroy Ave., has opened to offer various summer dance camps from 9 a.m. to noon. Regular dance classes run 4 to 9 p.m. Each camp has a theme. Princess camp will run twice because of its popularity. There is also an entertainment camp, survivor camp, acro camp and “girls just wanna have fun” camp. In order to meet COVID-19

guidelines, each camp can only have 10 children. Before the campers can participate, they’re given a forehead temperature scan and must wash their hands. The students remain within their group during the week. Similar to daycare centers, parents have to sign a waiver, because campers cannot always be social distanced. In the studio room, tape on the floor in the shape of boxes indicates where dancers have their own area to move around in. Even though things are different, Martin is looking forward to a recital in September.

“I’m so proud. We came from nothing,” Martin said. “I’m a very young studio owner. I started my business at 23. The last studio that we came from definitely thought that we were not going to make it but we are making it and we are staying strong.”

So now it is July and blueberry season is underway. Two years ago, I went to Norton Brothers’ Fruit Farm. I got lazy last year and bought them from the store. The berries were scrumptious, and you really can make a fun day out of it with your family. There is more than enough elbow room. You get your bucket, take a short walk past the apple orchard, and wander down to the blueberries. It is a beautiful property.

Thinking back to my youth in Arden, I remember there were two huge blueberry bushes right next to our bus stop. Guess what we would have for breakfast every morning? We picked handfuls and then stuffed them in our faces – getting to school with purple stained fingers.

In Cheshire, you have options for picking blueberries. Old Bishop’s Farm has blueberries to pick and you can also buy a ready-made blueberry pie if you prefer (like I did the other day). Drazen Orchards, where my husband and I go to pick apples and peaches (okay, most of the time we just buy it from the farm store), also has blueberry picking. The orchard has been in operation since the 1800s. It was David Drazen who bought the orchard in the 1950s and his son Gordon Drazen improved the or-

When Japan failed to respond to the July 26 ultimatum of the Potsdam Decla-

ration to surrender or face total destruction, Truman authorized its use. His instructions to Stimson in a handwritten memo were clear and concise. “Suggestions approved. Release when ready. But not sooner than Aug. 2," he said. On the morning of Aug. 6, an American B-29 bomber dropped the first bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Nearly 80,000 would die instantly. Three days later, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki killing another 70,000. Thousands more would die in the aftermath. See Veterans, A20

All fitness classes have shifted to the west side and the camp is run at the east side. Along with smaller group sizes, groups are taking more time between activities to sanitize equipment and wash hands. All staff members are wearing masks, but campers do not have to wear them. “While online is great, it is the actual face to face and verbal interaction that they need,” said Rob Newton, camp director. “To be able to have them come to camp, to see them smiling, to see them happy to have them interacting with their friends again, it’s awesome. Local man faces DUI, attempted assault charges By Bailey Wright Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — A Cheshire man faces DUI and other charges after police said he hit some parked vehicles and almost struck an employee at a local automotive business. Steven Malon, 61, of Cheshire, was charged Friday, July 10, with driving while intoxicated, seconddegree criminal attempt to commit assault, reckless driving, failure to drive in proper lane, second-degree breach of peace, reckless endangerment and evading responsibility. The incident started in the parking lot of L&S Automotive, 1157 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, when Malon backed into a vehicle in the

even as he went on to Southern Connecticut State University to get his degree in corporate communications. “I would go to class during the day and then drive down the road to Radio Towers Park in Hamden and do my show at night from 7 p.m. to midnight,” he recalls. An opportunity to advance his career came along and Collins packed his bags for a station in Providence. “I was there for four years until the economy went south and I lost my gig due to budget cuts,” he said.

The employee jumped into the bed of the truck as Malon began to drive away, the press release said. He told police he was thrown around the bed of the truck as Malon sped away erratically. Malon was apprehended in the parking lot of 1783 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike. As a “huge NSYNC fan,” he and another fan collected enough signatures to have March 13, 1999 declared NSYNC Day in Connecticut. The second was when Bon Jovi performed live inside the KC101 studio in 2003.

After a short timeout, Collins was back in the game, this time at iHeart Media in Hartford. Just this past January, Collins said, “I got my old night show back on KC101.”

“We had all four members of Bon Jovi set up instruments in the studio to perform songs from their then-new album ‘This Left Feels Right,’ and filled our lobby with Bon Jovi fans so they could watch the band perform acoustic renditions of their biggest hits for about an hour. For those who choose to have their child participate in remote learning, the plan outlines two methods; synchronous learning with students able to participate in class at the same time as their in-person counterparts, with the help of devices such as iPads and Chromebooks; and asynchronous learning, for those students who are at home to meet one-on-one with their teachers after class and participate in classes via YouTube or other platforms.

Chipmunks are driving people nuts this summer By The Associated Press

There were plenty of acorns this spring, and now the chipmunks are driving people nuts.

Plentiful acorns last fall meant there was still plenty of food on the ground when the chipmunks emerged from winter and got busy breeding this spring, said Shevenell Webb, a small mammal biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The result is a bumper crop of the critters. “They’re cute. They’re fun to watch in the forest as they duck in and out of the holes and play peekaboo,” Webb

“We can’t grow a tulip without them digging it up,” Steven Parren, wildlife program diversity manager for the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife, said of the chipmunks in his yard. “They don’t even pause.” There were so many acorns in one of the areas that he monitors that the rodents that rely on them couldn’t stash them all away for the winter. Plenty remained on the ground this spring. In addition to chipmunks, he said, he’s seeing more squirrels, rabbits and a variety of different kinds of mice. See Chipmunks, A25

There were 38 human cases and 15 deaths from the virus, with many of the cases in Massachusetts and Michigan, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most years, the country sees just half a dozen cases of the virus in humans, the agency said. In Massachusetts and New Jersey, officials have already detected EEE in mosquitoes this year, the earliest on record in those states. There have been no human or animal cases yet.

Crans and other state health officials say EEE, which has no cure in humans, tends to come in two- to three-year cycles, but they also stress that mosquito borne-diseases are notoriously tricky to predict.

The state also had its first case of West Nile virus this season. A more common but less severe mosquitoborne disease than EEE, it can cause fevers, headaches, body pain and other symptoms. The infection was found in a captive hawk in early June.

Ticks are also expected to be out earlier and in larger numbers this season because of the relatively mild winter, warned Aaron Bernstein, a pediatrician at Boston Children’s Hospital and a director at Harvard’s School of Public Health. That could mean more cases of debilitating Lyme disease and other tick-related illnesses for local health care systems already feeling the pressure of responding to the coronavirus, he said. “Some of the people going into the woods more now might not be experienced with how to protect themselves in the forest, and that’s a concern,” he said. Officials say people should avoid the evening and early morning hours when mosquitoes are most active, use bug spray and wear long clothing where possible when outdoors. The CDC has offered states additional help with mosquito testing this season as the coronavirus pandemic has overwhelmed state public health offices, said Candice Hoffmann, an agency spokeswoman. Officials in eight states and the District of Columbia have so far taken up the offer: Maryland, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Vermont, Maine, Florida and Arizona. During last year’s EEE outbreak, the CDC provided about $700,000 in emergency funding and technical assistance to Rhode Island, Indiana, Michigan, and Massachusetts on top of roughly $18 million it provided to states for annual vectorborne disease surveillance, Hoffmann said. In Michigan, where six of that state’s 10 cases of EEE last year proved fatal, officials this summer have launched a pilot program to improve the state’s response to mosquito-borne illnesses. ate the kind of regular mosquito surveillance system already in place in Massachusetts and elsewhere to better predict and prepare for disease outbreaks. In Connecticut, officials have boosted the number of testing sites for mosquitoes in its high risk eastern portion, according to Philip Armstrong, a virologist with the state Department of Environmental Sciences.

One troubling development: the two earliest cases of EEE in mosquitoes this year were found in a northern part of the state close to New Hampshire, rather than the virus’ typical hotspots near Cape Cod, where officials also detected the virus in a mosquito sample last week.

Meanwhile an environmental group is calling on Massachusetts to avoid resorting to widespread aerial spraying of insecticide, which took place six times last year as cases surged.

Maryland-based Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Inspector General’s office this month, arguing that 2019’s aerial spraying cost more than $2 million but wasn’t effective in reducing EEE-carrying mosquitoes. Brown disputes the group’s assertion, but acknowledges the insecticides can be toxic to bees and other species, another concern raised by the group. “Last year was unprecedented,” she said. “No one wants to do that again.”

Back in Sudbury, David and Kirstin Garabedian say they’re optimistic their daughter can continue to heal from EEE. Now 6, she was able to return to kindergarten in January before the coronavirus pandemic shuttered schools weeks later. But her parents say she still regularly goes to speech and occupational therapy to deal with lingering speech and memory problems.

People needn’t get too alarmed over an overpopulation. Small mammal populations tend to explode, then crash and burn. Such is life near the bottom of the food chain, where food supply ebbs and flows and chipmunks are easy prey for owls, hawks, snakes, foxes and raccoons. Even if

their lives aren’t cut short, individual chipmunks tend to live only for three years, Webb said. Many New Englanders recall a similar spike in squirrel populations in 2018 in New England. The boom-andbust cycle was punctuated by a memorable number of road kills. “We’ve never seen anything like that. That was a once in a lifetime event,” Webb said.

In Massachusetts, which was the hardest hit by EEE last year, with 12 cases and 6 fatalities, officials have been testing earlier, more often and in a wider range of locations this year in order to quickly identify infection clusters, said State Epidemiologist Catherine Brown. A pilot effort is also testing the efficacy of different larvicides to help cull the mosquito population at its earliest stages, she said.

mosquito populations could be among the drivers, she said.
