Guided by Goats provides safe space for kids

CHESHIRE — Art and animals have always been a positive outlet of expression for Bella Gladue. So, when her mother, Alicia Gladue, learned about Guided by Goats, which combined both of Bella’s passions with therapy, she immediately signed them up.

During their first day, the two enjoyed the Cheshire farm’s first ever Teddy Bear Picnic on July 12. The day was filled with music, mud, pinecone paint brushes and

rock painting. Clutching her stuffed animal closely, Bella sang, danced and painted.

Executive Director Daniel Morton founded Guided by Goats, a nonprofit, in 2022 with the goal to create a safe space for kids with autism to develop their behavioral and social skills outside of a clinical setting. Morton was inspired by his work as a board-certified behavioral analyst and home therapist.

TAKE A LOOK, THAT’S A BOOK Cherie Stenson’s latest burst of creativity is located on the lower level of the Cheshire Public Library.

Stenson, the administrative director at CPL, turned her passion for ephemera crafting into a beautiful wedding dress tableau.

The common definition of the word “ephemera” is: “the minor transient documents of everyday life.”

Stenson’s wedding ensemble is made up of the pages of a single book. She said the project “took forever.”

Dorothy, also known as Dottie or Dot to her friends, Sis to her family, and Grammy/MeMe to her grandchildren, was born on May 13, 1940 in Norwalk, CT, daughter of the late Richard and Dorothy (Stratton) Draves.

Obituaries Phyllis Hazel Mossberg Palm CHESHIRE Phyllis Hazel Mossberg Palm of Cheshire, CT, died after a long illness. Phyl was born in New Haven, CT, the only child of Harold and Hazel Benger Mossberg. She grew up in the Millbrook area of North Haven and attended the Spring Glen School. Phyl received her degree in Child Care after attending Stephen’s College in Missouri and Boston University. In 1950 the minister of the Cheshire Congregational Church asked her to start a nursery school, which she did-and it is still in operation today!

Wedding bells rang when she married Theodore O. Palm on February 2, 1952, and they initially resided in Cheshire. They had two daughters and the family moved to North Haven in 1961, retreating to a cottage on Long Island Sound in the summers. Phyl was an active Girl Scout all her life, a Red Cross swimming instructor, an author, and avid bell collector. In 2003, she and Ted moved to Elim Park Place in Cheshire, CT, where she thrived for almost 20 years with all the friends, activities, and caring aides. Phyl

‘Takeover’ tip line

In response to growing complaints of a spike in so-called street takeover events, the FBI rolled out a tip line for residents to report instances of mass gatherings in parking lots and roadways. Fireflies are doing some mingling this summer

I obsess over things. For instance, I’ve obsessed about shoes – shoes I think I need or would like to have residing in my closet. I also have been obsessed on occasion about having the occasion for a free afternoon to read a book (and maybe the attention span to actually sit for a moment).

Dugas said there are multiple threats to fireflies, including lack of habitat, light pollution and pesticides. “Firefly larvae feed on other invertebrates, such as other insect larvae, worms, slugs and snails,” she explained. (Who knew, eh?)

That is, I haven’t seen any until this year. Around the first of July, I have seen not one or two, or even a handful of these little flashlights. I’ve seen kaboodles of them. Fireflies, by the way, are not flies but beetles, and there’s more than 200 species. Many larvae have the unique ability to produce light from organs in

their abdomens. Not all continue to have this ability as they mature to their adult stage. The word lámp from the ancient Greek means to shine.

Well, this summer, my backyard is ablaze!

I am thrilled. It’s also a bit surprising that I am not the only one. Friends say they are finding the same thing in their yards. Until now, all of us noticed many summers without fireflies. This year, though, friends throughout Cheshire and in Southington

My friend Barbara, who thought fireflies were going extinct, is over-the-moon about the lightshow in her backyard this year: “Isn’t it heavenly!” she exclaimed. It definitely is. But I wonder why we’re so lucky this year.

Andrew “Andy” Fusaro teamed up with his brother Evan Fusaro to open Fusaro’s Kitchen and Provisions.

“My brother is my business partner. He’s here to help whenever he can,” said Andrew Fusaro, co-owner of Fusaro’s Kitchen. “Evan is my older brother and has always been a big inspiration to me. I always say I’m looking up to him while looking down, because he’s shorter than me.”

The Collector of Revenue reminds residents that the Tax Office will remain open until 6:00 p.m. TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2023. The first installment of the Real Property taxes became due and payable on July 1, 2023.

Personal Property and Motor Vehicle taxes became due and payable in a single installment on July 1, 2023. The tax bills may be paid anytime during the month of July without interest penalty.

The Motor Vehicle tax affects everyone who had a vehicle registered in Connecticut as of October 1, 2022.

Any person receiving a tax bill for a motor vehicle they no longer own should not disregard the bill. You are encouraged to contact the Assessor’s office for clarification or an adjustment. The Assessor’s telephone number is (203) 271-6620.

Property owners who do not escrow their taxes with a bank and did not receive a tax bill should contact the Tax Collector’s office as soon as possible. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve the taxpayer of the requirement to pay statutory interest on their late payment. The Tax Office telephone number is 203-271-6630.

All taxes must be paid by TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2023, or they shall be considered delinquent. Interest shall be charged on the delinquent tax at the rate of one and one half per cent per month from July 1, 2023. Payments may be made by mail, on-line using the Town’s website, or in person at the Tax Office. The Tax Office is located on the first floor of Town Hall, 84 South Main Street. Tax Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Tax Office will no longer provide return receipts by mail. Your cancelled check will serve as proof of payment when you make your payment by mail. If you wish a receipt, you must bring the entire tax bill to the Tax Office when making your payment so we may stamp the Taxpayer Copy of the tax bill. There is an additional charge if you do not bring the entire tax bill. You can print a paid receipt at no charge through the Town’s website at www.cheshirect.org .

A final reminder, for the convenience of taxpayers, the Tax Office will remain open until 6:00 p.m. on TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2023. AUGUST 1, 2023 is the last day to pay your property taxes without an interest penalty.

The Town encourages taxpayers to use the Drive-Up payment box in the Town Hall parking lot. The stainlesssteel payment box is located on the circle directly in front of the entrance to Town Hall and may be used any time.

Andy has always loved cooking. After running a number of restaurants, he thought it was time to go off on his own and finally own his own restaurant and become that chef he always wanted to be growing up.

“I sat down with my wife and she was like, ‘whatever you need, whatever I can do to help let me know’ even though she was eight months pregnant at the time,” Andy Fusaro said.

In Brief Museum program

The Town Council is recruiting five volunteers from the community to serve on the Town of Cheshire Fair Rent Commission, which has been newly established in accordance with Public Act No. 22-30. Of these five appointed members: At least one shall be a licensed realtor or licensed real estate appraiser in Connecticut; At least one shall be a tenant; At least one shall be a landlord. All members shall serve two-year terms starting in July 2023.

The most popular station at the Teddy Bear picnic was the Mud Kitchen. Stocked with bowls, measuring cups, pots and plates, the kid chefs' hand mixed dirt and water to make a large amount of mud. They would then follow laminated recipes to bake either mud cake, dirt pie, nature donuts or earth cookies.

Animals and art Guided by Goats is currently set up in Morton's one-anda-half-acre backyard in Cheshire with two goat paddocks, a chicken coop and a duck sanctuary. The play area is next to the goat paddock and has multiple stations with nature-inspired art activities, like rock painting and painting with flowers or pinecones. Instructions are taped to each station so the kids can go from station to station without needing an adult to explain what they need to do.

The program is intentionally unstructured so the kids can explore what interests them in a safe space.

The stars of the shows – the goats – are brought out one by one on leashes to eat weeds and interact with the children. On the other hand, baby goats are passed from person to person for snuggles and brush time.

Older kids often go inside the paddocks with an adult to feed and brush the goats according to Morton.

The kids can also enter the chicken and duck coops with an adult.

The farm hosts multiple playgroups weekly for children of different ages and abilities to interact and socialize. The playgroups specifically for kids with autism have many of the same activities, but there are

In addition to the normal stations, a handful of bearthemed activities were specifically created for the Teddy Bear picnic, like homemade cinnamon play dough and storytime with a bear as the main character.

The music therapist, Brenda Tousignant, changed the lyrics of iconic children's songs so they were bear themed. So, "five monkeys jumping on the bed" became "five bears jumping on the bed."

At one point, Tousignant encouraged kids and parents alike to get on their feet for the "Teddy Bear Dance" as a way to "wiggle away the waggle."

She then passed out different instruments so that the kids could rhythmically follow along as they sang about a farmer who had a bear named Bingo.

Therapy through nature The therapeutic benefits of nature, especially animals, is what drives the program, Morton said.

Therapy animals can help children with autism socialize by acting as a buffer between them and other people, according to the United Disabilities Services.

Typically, therapy animals include household pets, like dogs, guinea pigs and cats, or more exotic animals, like dolphins, horses and llamas.

Chesprocott: Tick disease increasing in the Northeast

Obituaries Jon Smardin CHESHIRE Jon Smardin, 78, of Cheshire, beloved husband of Joanne Smardin, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on July 14, 2023.

Prior to their move to Connecticut in 2020, they spent many happy retirement years living in Rhode Island. Jon was born on July 21, 1944, in New York to the late Sidney and Molly Smardin. When he was five years old, the family moved to Norwalk, where he grew up and attended local schools.

A dedicated family man, he spent countless hours volunteering on the board of the local Red Cross chapter, as Past President of the Silvermine Association and coaching his children’s sports and activities. He was everpresent with his camera to capture all of the family’s good times.

Jon was personable, friendly, caring and had a wonderful sense of humor.

After a successful career in corporate finance, he found time for his favorite pastimes. He was a diehard golfer, a baseball coach and umpire. Jon was a skilled woodworker and craftsman who could build just about anything.

From the Chesprocott Health District: Tick season is here. And along with Lyme disease there is another tickborne illness – babesiosis – rearing its ugly head. Symptoms are like that of Lyme disease but can be more severe and longer-lasting.

“Babesiosis is another tick-borne disease that we hear about, in addition to Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and others,” stated Dr. Bobbi Pritt, director of the Mayo Clinic Clinical Parasitology Laboratory.

“Babesiosis is a parasitic disease transmitted by ticks. It’s caused primarily by Babesia microti in the U.S., and that’s transmitted by the same tick that transmits Lyme disease.”

The most common symptoms of babesiosis are a combination of: severe flu-like symptoms such as a high fever (up to 104 degrees), chills and sweats, particularly night sweats; general discomfort or feeling unwell; intense headache; muscle and joint pain; loss of appetite; nausea ; fatigue.

These symptoms can appear within one to nine

weeks, or even several months after a person has been infected. Some people with babesiosis experience no symptoms.

To avoid tick bites, Dr. Pritt recommends the “ABCs” of prevention: Avoid – You want to avoid the areas where ticks are found. In the northeast, that means areas in the woods where there’s brush, leaf litter and tall grass; Bug spray – Use it when you’re outdoors and think you’re going to be exposed to tick bites or

mosquito bites; Cover up – Wear protective clothing. If you have clothing over your skin, ticks won’t be able to bite you. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using a bug spray that contains DEET (30 percent) or picaridin. You also could use bug spray that has oil of lemon eucalyptus in it.
