be even more devastating since the restraining order can set a precedent in the divorce case. On occasion, an unscrupulous person contemplating or in the midst of divorce may misrepresent facts to get a restraining order – a bad idea for many reasons. For the respondent, rather than starting a divorce on an even playing field, they must dig themselves out of a legal hole. For the applicant spouse, stretching the facts
or downright creating them can potentially backfire by making divorce settlement difficult or, if caught, destroying their credibility with the judge. Given the limitations as well as potentially long-term consequences for the applicant and respondent, it is important that each consult with knowledgeable counsel before and during the restraining order process, esSee Cappalli, A6

Rally calls for state Rep. Fishbein’s resignation By Lauren Takores Record-Journal staff
Glaspy, who works as a paramedic in the emergency room at Yale New Haven Hospital, said that he didn’t want to stay in Wallingford after the public spat.
WALLINGFORD — About 200 people attended a rally Friday evening calling for the resignation of Republican state Rep. Craig Fishbein, with many gathering in front of his business office. Fishbein, who represents the 90th District and is a town councilor, retweeted a meme on May 30 Fishbein showing an image of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden giving a speech with the words “If you aren’t setting fire to buildings then you ain’t black” on top of the image. He apologized and took down the post on June 1 after a public outcry. The rally, held outside of Town Hall, was organized by a group of local students who carried out a peaceful protest last week in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement that drew more than 500 people. A petition garnered about 115 signatures. The organizers, who continue to decline to identify themselves publicly, said they plan to deliver copies to Fishbein’s office and Gov. Ned Lamont. “If Fishbein doesn’t represent all of us, he doesn’t deserve to represent any of us,” the petition stated in part. Local former Democratic candidates Bruce Conroy and Darrell Stancuna facilitated the rally, moving through the crowd with a megaphone. Several people addressed the crowd including Jim Jinks, a Democratic Cheshire Town Councilor who is run-

“I didn’t feel like I was run out of town,” he said, “but I didn’t feel supported. I didn’t feel that I belonged.” Wallingford resident Cara Esposito attended the rally with her 11-year-old daughter, Shia Thigpen. They live in Fishbein’s district. ning against Fishbein for the 90th House District seat. He turned in enough petition signatures to be on the November ballot Thursday, and on Friday he announced he qualified for Connecticut’s Clean Election Program, raising over $6,000 from 176 people in eight hours. “Now that we have access to the ballot and have amazingly already qualified for public financing, we can concentrate on getting our message out to the voters,” he said. Robert Glaspy, a former Wallingford resident who now lives in Milford, related
an incident from October 2016 involving Fishbein that he said made him leave Wallingford.
“I would like the community to stand up for my daughter, and other people of color and black people,” Esposito said. “I don’t think it’s right to have a representative who says stuff like that.” The 90th House District in-
cludes parts of Cheshire and Wallingford, including Yalesville. Fishbein was first elected as a state representative in 2016 in a special election after the death of Democrat Mary G. Fritz created a vacancy. He’s currently vice chairman of the General Assembly’s Conservative Caucus. The calls for Fishbein to resign as state representative started as soon as the retweet became publicly known. An online petition started June 1 by an anonymous person had almost 5,160 signatures as of Friday. Fishbein did not return a request for comment. Plan of action is on the table CIAC issues guidelines for gradual return of high school sports By Bryant Carpenter Record-Journal staff
CHESHIRE — For Connecticut high school students, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The CIAC recently released guidelines for the “resocialization” for scholastic sports and other activities. Resocialization: That’s a one big word for “gettin’ back at it.” Albeit, by degrees.
Sports are categorized from “low risk” — such as cross country — to “high risk” — such as football — and the recommendations for each vary accordingly. The suggested course of action is detailed and touches upon multiple bases, such as the opening of facilities, the size of gatherings, the sanitizing of equipment, the hy-
giene and health screening of players.

Target dates are included, but the plan is fluid, subject to change based on the progress of the coronavirus and Gov. Ned Lamont’s reopening plan for the Connecticut.
“It is understood that the guidelines do not fully mitigate any COVID-19 risk and, therefore, school districts, parents, athletes, coaches, and officials should make individual determinations on when it is safe to return,” the CIAC stated. “School districts should consult their local departments of public health prior to implementing a return to in-person athletics or activities.”
On that front, the picture is promising. The governor pushed up the launch of Phase II of his plan from June 20 to June 17. Phase II includes the reopening of gyms, fitness studios, bowling alleys and some youth sports programs. The CIAC, in issuing its recommendations, emphasized safety and caution in resuming activities. The CIAC also leaves considerable discre-
There have been no high school sports in Connecticut since March 10, when the CIAC, acting several days ahead of much of the rest of the sports world, canceled what remained of the winter postseason. The CIAC tried to hold out some hope for the spring season, making several postponements before becoming the last state in the nation to call it off entirely on May 6.

The CIAC guidelines, drawn up in conjunction with the Connecticut State Medical

Phase 2 From A1
As of Wednesday, museums, social clubs, libraries, sports complexes, gyms, pools and hotels also were permitted to reopen and restaurants could offer indoor dining. The second phase was originally scheduled to start June 20, but was moved up because of Father’s Day weekend. “To avoid having Phase 2 of Connecticut’s reopening efforts take effect during a busy Father’s Day weekend, we’re going to move it up a few days earlier to June 17,” Gov. Ned Lamont tweeted on June 5. “Our public health professionals are continuing to monitor test results for possible links to large demonstrations, but as long as COVID hospitalizations and infection rates remain low, we will be in a very good position for a June 17 Phase 2.”

Todd Turcotte, owner of Highland Bowling in Cheshire, was ready to open at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. “Our industry has gone out of its way, throughout the country, to make sure that people can feel safe in getting out of the house and doing recreation with their families,” he said. While closed, the alley underwent some renovations, including a new touchless scoring system that was planned for some time but was accelerated by the pandemic. When arriving, they can approach the front desk as usual to reserve a lane. Staff will enter the bowlers’ names into the scoring system directly. Customers will be required to wear socks when renting shoes — which Turcotte said will continue to be disinfected after every use — and must have a mask on at all times except when bowling. In general, any businesses planning to open in phase 2 must follow guidelines from the governor’s office regarding all factors of business, including the use of face masks and other personal protection equipment, thorough cleaning, training of employees on new procedures, capacity tracking, maintaining an employee log, social distancing guests and offering touchless or contactless services. COMMENTARY
A serene spot to renew yourself By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
This is definitely a new normal for all of us. It’s a tad tough to keep our sanity. Even if you work from home, it is really important to balance your day. This includes finding time to get outdoors. You need fresh air and some exercise. It’s important to your well-being. Even as we are beginning to move about more freely, we need to be smart. That means stay away from crowds. For a beautiful alternative, I am suggesting a place for you to go by yourself, or with your immediate family members. It’s a piece of quiet and calm found behind Highland Elementary School on Highland Avenue. Walk behind the school, past the baseball field and playgrounds, which are now closed, and you come to the entrance, a sign spans over the trail. The name is still easily read on the otherwise well-worn sign: “Highland Nature Center.” It’s topped by a scrollwork of green oak leaves. The area is a part of an educational science and nature program at the school, but for you, it’s a wonderful respite that’s close to home. Once past the entrance sign, you walk along a wide path for a stretch, bounded on one side by a chain fence. It takes you into a compact area of tall pines and hardwoods, and on my visit those same trees seemed to be overstuffed with happy birds singing their birdsong. Walk in farther and the path changes over to soft trekking grass and moss. Now you have two options in direction. Take the straightaway that brings you to a small stone bridge that spans a portion of the pond. The pond is a part of the Mill River watershed. Stop and look into the water and you
just may catch a glimpse of small fish just under the water’s surface. This is calming enough to stand here for a time to take it all in. On my earlier visit, the trees had yet to green up. It’s sure to be an even lovelier sight now. When you are done, turn around and head back to take the turn you left behind. It’s a narrower path on a patchwork of loose gravel and paved path, easy enough though to walk safely. The path opens onto a serene seating area of wooden benches and oversized rocks to sit on. Here you can look on to the pond as well. Better yet, sit for a minute. Mediate. Contemplate. Then walk over to the green float-
ing dock, where you can see frog eggs floating about, wound about in the roots of the shrubs along the ripari-
an buffer. On a sunny day, this area is a haven of happiness.
On any given day, it is such a gift to have so close to home.
