Strawberry Festival among canceled fundraisers
BOUTIQUE BARGAINS
By Bailey Wright Record-Journal staff
The First Congregational Church of Cheshire’s annual Strawberry Festival is canceled for the first time, due to the pandemic. The long running popular local event has been held for 83 consecutive years. It’s typically held the first weekend in June on the church green. Cheshire Historical Society created a pop-up version of its "Boutique-in-the Shed" over the weekend. CHS President Diane Calabro said the historical society and shed have been closed due to COVID-19, and a backlog of “for sale” items meant that the shed was just about bursting at the seams. To reduce inventory, organizers hauled the goods out to Peck Lane and took any offer for any item generating some very good deals for customers. Bargain hunters in the photo are, from left: Brandy Elliott, Meriden, and Fran Dupre, Cheshire, along with Calabro. Dupre picked up fabric to make masks. Also shown is 8-year-old Aaron Carmody. DAR scholarships awarded to CHS grads The Lady Fenwick DAR Chapter recently announced awards of two $1,000 scholarships. The winners are both students from Cheshire High School. Every year, the local DAR chapter offers a scholarship to a graduating high school senior who is a resident of Cheshire, Prospect or Wolcott and who will pursue an undergraduate degree or studies in pre-law, criminal justice or American government, history or civics. Applicants are judged on academics, service to school and community and financial need. The scholarships are named in memoriam for Chapter members who have passed. The 2020 Lady Fenwick DAR
The outdoor summer celebration usually features live music, local vendors, crafts and homemade strawberry shortcake and serves as a fundraiser. Typically, crowds of 1,000 or more attend and this year organizers made the hard call that the event could pose a hazard to vendors and attendees. Discussion is underway as to the possibility that a festival could be held later in the summer or the fall. The local event is just one of the popular events affected by the current situation. All around the area, local nonprofits are looking into alternative fundraising after pandemic restrictions forced them to cancel most annual events.

The club recently donated $5,000 each to five local food banks to help them purchase more food for the hundreds of residents without jobs due to the pandemic. Moran is unsure what the club will do to make up for lost funds. The Meriden-New BritainBerlin YMCA’s annual Martini and Massage Charity Benefit has been postponed this
The national organization held a country-wide virtual walk at the end of April, but local organizers are now planning a 12-hour event on Sept. 19 that they say is tentative. Meriden’s annual PurpleStride for pancreatic cancer is still scheduled for June 20, but will be a virtual event. In a normal year, the event brings hundreds to Hubbard Park to walk and jog around the park in an effort to bring awareness to the disease and raise money for research. “This means you can still participate in PurpleStride, but as a virtual participant, doing something meaningful and personal to you in honor of the people you love,” the organizers said in a statement. According to its website, the virtual walk has raised about $21,000 so far this year, with a goal of $150,000. Last year the walk raised $167,000.

There are over 15,000 businesses across four cities, Meriden, Southington, Wallingford and Cheshire, whose hard work, dedication and success make our communities a great place to live and work. The Readers’ Choice program was created to recognize and reward our local businesses and to be a resource when you might be looking for a dentist, car repair, or even a place to have dinner with your family. Over 210,000 votes were cast, and over 500 businesses have earned the right to call themselves the Best of the Best and be celebrated at an exclusive first-class gala all for them. Congratulations again, to our 2019 Readers’ Choice winners.

COMMENTARY
Bring a map, just in case By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
Don’t laugh, but I can’t find my way out of a paper bag. Yes, I am directionally challenged. Now that I have addressed that one fault of mine, let me assure you that when you check out the town-owned open space property called DeDominicis, you will not get lost. My daughter and I dropped into DeDominicis on one of the hotter days in May. I hadn’t been here in about
two years and had forgotten how beautiful it is. There are two entrances to the property. One is off Corliss Lane from Cook Hill, and the other entrance on Old Lane off Rt. 10 is the entrance I am more familiar with and it is possibly more well-known for others, too. At the Old Lane entrance, there is a small length of mowed grass over the curb on either side of the trailhead where you can park your car. Do not park on the road. When we arrived, the
parking area was just about at its limit with three cars. I parked behind them and off we went. The access point is just to the right of the kiosk. Here the adventure begins in this 185-acre woodland property with an offer of birdsong and a serene hardwood forest. Once you step inside from the street, the light, the sounds, and the smell of the forest floor are so different. The understory, made up of small shrubs, plants and saplings, is cushioned by a

tree canopy that seemingly reaches a mile high. In the past, I have seen deer bounding through the widely spaced trees. Today there are none to see, but there are plenty of chipmunks. It has been a mast year for acorns, so that explains this year’s explosion in mammal numbers. As we walk along the wellworn soft path, we pass a house on the left. It is a rather new construction and honestly it shocked us when we first saw it being constructed a few years back. Once we pass, that is the last reminder of suburbia and we enjoy the solitude of the property.
and other tiny flies get into the deep throated stem, walk around the spadix, picking up pollen and then they fly off to pollinate the next plant. There are also boulder erratics scattered about. I initially learned about them on my first walk here, which feels like a million years ago, with Cheshire Land Trust’s Mark Kasinskas. Now that I know them, I see them everywhere. The ones here at DeDominicis range from chairsize to as big as a teardrop camper, to bigger than I can climb on. Taking the shorter blue loop trail, we climb up a traprock ridgeline. As it flattens out, there are sweeping views of Hayscented fern and other woodland ferns which carpet the forest floor. We take a short walk off the main trail to take a look at a drop-off, a deep ravine, where a stream, recently energized by rainfall, flows quickly through its channel.
The red trail is the main route within DeDominicis. The red trail continually drops us lower in elevation and finally to the valley floor with a ridge loop to the right or go left to continue onto red. The red trail stretches on to Corliss and there are other marked trails that form off the red route. Letters to the Editor Special session needed Editor : I represent 25,000 people in Bethany, Cheshire and Prospect and my constituents feel shut out of the debate regarding the “stayat-home” order and the subsequent reeopening process. They want to be heard. New and Safe Things To Do!
THINGS TO DO is back. Submit your events now at myrecordjournal.com/ThingsToDo
The legislature needs to come together in a special session to take back some of its constitutional authority that was surrendered to the governor when the coronavirus first emerged in our state. The governor's declaration issued on March 10 remains in effect through Sept. 9 (180 days) unless he revokes or extends it. The legislature can go into special session in two ways: The governor can call us in, or the members can petition themselves into special session. A majority of members from each chamber would need to send a petition to the Secretary of State requesting a special session
(76 members in the House). If the legislature was to meet in special session, the General Assembly could, 1.) pass a bill to amend state statute that provides the governor his current authority, or 2.) pass legislation to effectively amend/repeal individual executive orders. To secure enough votes to override a governor's veto, the General Assembly would need a two-thirds majority in each chamber (101 in the House). The current make-up of the General Assembly is 91 Democrats and 60 Republicans in the House and 22 Democrats to 14 Republicans in the Senate. If the governor will not call us into special session, I request the Speaker of the House and the Democrats in the General Assembly join Republican members and petition for a special session, because in the end we all represent the people of the state, and their voices matter. State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus (R-Prospect)
