MERIDEN — The school district recently learned it is eligible to receive up to $2.38 million in funding from the federal CARES Act to pay for pandemic-related costs next school year.

It’s springtime. This usually marks a time of new beginnings, including for those in the real estate market.

Superintendent of Schools Mark Benigni said in an email the money will “support increased

Those are the school colors for Michigan State University. Two of Waldron’s uncles graduated from there.

High school seniors In-state reopening

At the same time, students appear eager to start the next phase of their education.

In Connecticut, a subcommittee of the state’s Reopen Connecticut Advisory Group recommended colleges and universities plan for a phased reopening, which would begin over the summer.

“I’m looking forward to the experience of being in another part of the country,” Waldron said.

“Our orientation has been online,” Waldron said, adding the decision was made a month ago.

“That’s going to be hard, not knowing anyone and not getting to meet people until classes start.” Waldron will begin her studies at MSU with an undecided major. But she plans to study physiology and eventually become a physician assistant. In past years, Sheehan High School seniors would wear college sweatshirts on May 1, showing where they intend to be in the fall.

Administrators of local high schools don’t have official tallies for how many graduates will attend college in the fall, and how many have opted to attend in-state colleges and universities, versus out-of-state colleges. This month, because Sheehan students weren’t in the building, members of the senior class decided to use the school’s Instagram site to announce students’ decisions.

The phased reopening requires each institution to file reopening plans with the state Department of Public Health. The plans detail how officials will repopulate campuses and monitor health conditions to detect coronavirus infections. If the virus

Messina said he is not aware of any peers who had planned to attend out-ofstate colleges changing their minds. College-bound seniors have other concerns, aside from COVID-19. “I think some concerns for not just our seniors, but seniors across the country, are money, safety, and missing out on the experience,” Messina said. Jennifer Straub, principal of Maloney High School in Meriden, said if students are more driven to attend school closer to home this fall then they would have in years’ past, those decisions are most likely based on cost and affordability. Other programs that guarantee students would be able to transfer credits from community colleges into fouryear schools are also appealing to students. “I think more than COVID,

Institutions, like UConn, have pushed back their commitment dates to June. “A lot of schools want to do everything they can to help students make an informed decision,” Straub said. In recent weeks, Maloney staff sent out surveys to students to find out whether their plans may have changed since the pandemic began. So far more than half of those surveys have come back. Straub doesn’t have an official tally on whether plans have changed since the COVID-19 outbreak. “Anecdotally, I can tell you, for the most part our students seem to be sticking with their original plans,” Straub said. Perry to challenge Sampson in 16th District SOUTHINGTON — Republican state Sen. Rob Sampson has been at the forefront of opposition to the governor’s shutdown orders. His challenger this November, Southington business owner and Democrat Jack Perry, supports the governor’s approach.

Perry said Sampson has taken ideological stands while in the General Assembly, but has done little else. Sampson said Perry has mostly dodged questions on his own platform. Sampson and Perry are both running for the 16th Senate district seat. The district includes portions of Cheshire, Southington, Prospect, Wol-

cott and Waterbury.

manager of the company.

Sampson, 50, won election two years ago, replacing former state senator and Republican Joe Markley, who ran for lieutenant governor. Sampson at the time was representing the 80th House district.

He ran as an independent Southington Town Council candidate in 2017 and narrowly missed gaining a seat.

Sampson said he’ll continue fighting to move Connecticut in a new direction. “That’s going to be the choice. Do you want to stick with people who believe in freedom and opportunity?” he said. Perry, 30, wants to bring the skills and experience he’s gained starting and running a company to the state Senate. He said the district needs someone who can get

Sampson, a real estate agent, said he’s co-sponsored more than 100 laws while in the legislature. His objections have also helped shaped Gov. Ned Lamont’s initial response to the pandemic. Sampson urged Lamont not to increase unemployment insurance rates on businesses, and the governor agreed. “There’s a letter I wrote to the governor that did something,” Sampson said. Memorial Day marked with smaller than usual ceremonies, no parades By Lauren Takores Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN — About 50 people attended a small Memorial Day ceremony Monday at the American Legion Post 45 building, some watching the speeches, wreath laying and rifle salute from their vehicles. The city had canceled its annual Memorial Day parade due to the statewide bans on large gatherings. Despite the absence of a parade, this year’s remembrance wasn’t too different from previous years, said City Councilor Bob Williams, American Legion Post 45 commander. The parade usually concludes with a ceremony organized by the Legion post on the Meriden Green, but this year it was staged at the hall on Hanover Road instead.

Williams said the presence of the Antique Veterans of Meriden Honor Guard, which performed the color guard and rifle salute, was especially poignant given

the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has been more deadly among the elderly population.

taped a memorial service on Sunday that was broadcast on Wallingford Government Television Monday. It’s slated to be rerun throughout the week, and is available on the WGTV YouTube channel.

“Most of these guys are in their 80s,” Williams said. “I told them certainly they didn’t need to come out, obviously, because of the pandemic, and they insisted on being here.”

In Southington, American Legion Kiltonic Post 72 live streamed its ceremony via Facebook from the front of its building.

Some of the parade traditions were maintained. Williams recognized four brothers — Peter, Tony, Don and Bob Jandreau, all of whom served in the U.S. Army between 1957 and 1974 — who would have been the parade grand marshals. He also gave a posthumous remembrance speech about Walter Shamock Jr., a city councilor for 30 years and Korean War veteran who died in December. Morgan Morenz, an autistic woman who fundraises for the Legion post by selling her artwork, read a speech she composed in 15 minutes, saying that the words came to her quickly.

Members of the Antique Veterans of Meriden Honor Guard posts the colors at the Memorial Day service at American Legion Post 45 in Meriden. Lauren Takores, Record-Journal

“To all the fallen soldiers who died during war, and to all of us who grieve over them, in various cultures this is the way of the warrior,” she said in her speech.

Here, ready to engage and help rebuild By State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus

New and Safe Things To Do!

THINGS TO DO is back. Submit your events now at myrecordjournal.com/ThingsToDo

We are living in unprecedented times, facing a global pandemic and doing our best to protect our state residents from this terrible virus. And I believe most of my legislative colleagues would agree having a collaborative and unified voice speak on behalf of our state government is the best way to communicate a state-wide message. As a state representative, my duties don’t end at the State Capitol front door when the legislative session gavels out. We are on call 24 hours, 7 days-a-week, answering constituent calls and emails, engaging with agencies to help residents navigate issues with their state government. And with the coronavirus outbreak, my legislative office is fielding an historic number of phone calls, letters, and emails from people in Bethany, Cheshire and Prospect. And I will say, the frustration level is reaching a

critical boiling point for many over the current stayat-home policy and some of the government response. In an attempt, to share the frustrations of our constituents, my colleagues and I have sent the governor multiple letters asking for more of a collaborative policy-making approach but have been sidelined. Instead the governor is relying on the Re-Open CT Advisory Board and an out-ofstate consulting firm neither of which is accountable to the residents of the state or working day-in and day-out. My office is still hearing from constituents who are unable to get answers or solutions from the Department of Labor (DOL) concerning their unemployment insurance claims after nine weeks out of work. We are hearing from constituents that the wait time for a response may be five to seven weeks, and we know some people have not received a single check See Zupkus, A15

and texts daily from constituents who are concerned about the overreach of state government during the pandemic. “People who’ve never taken a nickel from the government have been forced, by circumstances not of their own making, to stand in line for food,” Sampson said. “I don’t think any of it is necessary.” Perry said he’s concerned about reopening the state too quickly.

open,” he said. “At the same time, I’ve known so many people who have lost loved ones.” Opening up before neighboring states might draw people to Connecticut and risk infection. Businesses need to prepare before letting customers back in. “You still can’t get PPE, you can’t get Clorox wipes,” Perry said. “We’ve got to crawl before we walk.”

As a challenger and Southington resident, Perry said “I want to see our businesses he’d have to work hard to open, I want to see our state connect with voters in the

other towns of the 16th district. He’s planning to do that virtually, although he hopes door knocking will take place later. “It’s going to be challenging, it’s going to be different. At the same time, I’m going to give it my all,” Perry said. Sampson is also hopeful for door knocking and in-person campaigning, but said it may be months before that happens. “I think a lot of this election cycle is going to take place on social media, radio, TV,” he said.
