Customers converge on garden centers

Parties working together on graduation

By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff

By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

Customers converged on local garden centers this past weekend, drawn by the sunny weather and the desire to keep busy after weeks of staying home.

From drive-in ceremonies to car parades in the park, school officials must consult with local health, fire and police officials when planning high school graduation ceremonies next month.

Extra staff was on hand Sunday to guide customers browsing the rows of flowers and herbs or to tend to the checkout line stretching out the

Drum circle facilitator goes with the flow By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

Craig Norton goes with the flow. A drum circle facilitator, Norton understands life has a rhythm that ebbs and flows. His move to Cheshire could have been a little more flowy, however.

Back in March, Norton was booked to lead a drum circle at the popular ArtsDay event at Cheshire Academy. While the event was cancelled due to COVID-19, Norton would soon find himself in town anyway – as a new resident. More on that later. Drumming is what Norton does for

a living. Seeking a support community after a divorce, his boss at the time suggested he visit a drum gathering at a local church. Norton went, and recalls, “I walked in and it was like home … The beautiful thing is some of the people I met are still my friends today.” See Drummer, A12

Local school officials are putting the finishing touches on plans that would allow students to celebrate while preventing the spread of COVID-19. After a series of conference calls with state education officials, Wallingford School Superintendent Salvatore Menzo issued a notice to district parents Sunday evening outlining the graduation restrictions. “We did receive written guidance from the Commissioner of Education on Thursday (May 14) and through a conference call on Friday,” Menzo wrote. “In that guidance, group gatherings of more than five people are not permitted under the Governor’s Executive Order 7X.” In a conference call with the Connecticut Association of Boards of See Graduations, A13

People in Connecticut – whether they are healthy or sick – can help inform heath officials and doctors by using the How We Feel app and self-reporting their daily symptoms through a series of short prompts. The smartphone or webbased application was created in response to the need for health officials and doctors to obtain more information on COVID-19 in the face of widespread testing shortages. It only takes users about 30 seconds each day to report any symptoms they may be experiencing. The information shared has the potential to reveal outbreak hotspots and provide insight into the progression of COVID-19.

State Department of Public Health workers and the Connecticut National Guard have been inspecting nursing homes for staffing levels and proper supply and use of personal protective equipment. Letters of violation have gone out, with the state releasing information on six nursing homes found in violation in Chester, East Haven, Milford, Orange, Seymour and Waterford, according to The Connecticut Mirror. The inspections found lapses in infection control and prevention and poor practices for the prolonged use of protective gear. The letters were released without the DPH saying if they were the only six nursing homes with deficiencies or merely the first in a series of reports on how the industry has handled the pandemic.

“It takes time to get these completed and posted,” he told the Mirror. “It’s not an overnight process.”

According to a CVS statement, the company is planning to open additional test sites across Connecticut and the country over the next two weeks and expects to have around 1,000 locations nationwide by the end of the month. have those workers tested ahead of Wednesday’s reopening.

The most recent reports, according to the state’s disease surveillance system, showed that from March 1 to May 13, 2,458 test records related to Meriden residents had been uploaded to the surveillance system. Crown cautioned the reported figure is incomplete.

“I would strongly support this as well, but we are not making it mandatory,” Esposito said in an email. “We will be providing all our restaurants with an ill health policy template to ensure their workers are feeling OK and checking temperatures and other high risk exposure questions to ensure our patrons are safe.”

According to statewide figures released by the Connecticut Department of Public Health on Friday, laboratories had so far processed 155,908 tests across the state. There were 36,085 positive results. During a news conference earlier in the week Gov. Ned Lamont told reporters officials hoped to ramp up testing, expanding to 42,000 weekly tests by next week. Testing has grown since early March — from 18,000 weekly tests in mid-April to about 29,000 tests last week. Chesprocott Health Director Maura Esposito said she hopes the increased availability of tests will identify more residents who have the virus but are not experiencing any symptoms “... so they can isolate and hopefully stop the spread.” The health district includes Cheshire. Esposito noted that other local health departments, including New Haven, are issuing guidance to local salon and restaurant operators to

State Rep. Liz Linehan, whose district includes Cheshire, Southington and Wallingford, expressed concern that while testing capacity is growing, there are not enough people utilizing it. She said it’s an issue of publicizing the availability of tests while moving to reopen sectors of the economy. “I think it’s important we still focus on the information we’re getting from our experts — the epidemiologists. And that we’re taking it slow, reopening with safety in mind, while also understanding it’s important we get the economy moving,” Linehan said. “It’s going to be an important balance. But as long as we follow guidelines from the scientists and data, we will be moving in the right direction.” mgagne@record-journal.com 203-317-2231 Twitter:@MikeGagneRJ

COMMENTARY

Why not try the path less-traveled? It’s the weekend. The weather is terrific. After a week of being cooped up inside, you eagerly head out to the walking trail for some muchneeded exercise. Oh no! You get to the parking lot and it is not just packed, there are so many people, there is no where to park. I feel your pain. So what do you do now? Why not go to the trail lesstraveled? When was the last time you went to Boulder Knoll? The property is a town-owned open space on Boulder Road. It was the site of the former Jackman Farm and before that it was known as the Weber Farm and also referenced as Cross Rocks Farm. Additional parcels, including the Lassen Farm, were combined for a total of 150 acres. It’s part of the town’s “greenbelt” in the eastern section of the town. The property is open to the public.

Next to the property is the non-profit Friends of Boulder Knoll with a three-acre space used for community gardening, a CSA, and an annual farm-to-table fundraising dinner in August. I’ve walked the “official” Boulder Knoll trail a number of times. Usually the trail is wet, but it’s a beautiful onemile stretch with the ridgeline on your left and wetlands on your right. It’s wonderful for birders. My walking companions and I would scramble up the traprock on the ridge and look over the other side of the ridge, catching glimpses of unawares deer. On my last visit, I saw the kiosk had been moved from the open field area to the parking area over by Friends of Boulder Knoll. This is also the area where the huge sheds were before they were torn down. See Around Town, A15

children of his own. Now, after a busy schedule and thousands of gigs, there has been a huge change. As it turned out, the month of March was a time of disruption due to COVID-19. Many events were canceled. That included ArtsDay and Norton’s first Cheshire appearance. What had been a schedule that was booked solid, is much different now. “Most of what I do, has been cancelled,” said Norton, adding that it’s the kids he misses most.

At 30-something-years-old, Norton found his calling. After that initial drum circle, he spent the next few years participating in workshops and taking classes all over New England. He also studied early on with legendary Nigerian drummer Michael Babatunde Olatunji. “He basically brought community drumming to the west and taught thousands of people like me,” said Norton.

In the interim, Norton is being proactive and thinking positively. He recently released an award-winning documentary about drumming called “Rhythms of Life” (roldoc.com), and looks forward to holding outdoor drum circles – using safe social distancing and a clean drum protocol – in the near future.

Arthur Hull of Village Music Circles in California also has played an important role in Norton’s drumming. “He does these workshops all over the world and teaches people how to lead drum circles,” Norton said of Hull. “I’ve had an incredible relationship with him ever since—that was 20 years ago.” By 2004, Norton decided to quit his job at ESPN, and work for himself, weaving together a life that integrated drumming, video production and photography, along with teaching “to make a living as a creative person, without any boss,” said Norton. “I am one of the very few

“I don’t call myself a music therapist,” said Norton, “but I have studied health rhythms.” That is considered a therapeutic music session, he said. During a therapeutic session, part of the session is conversation, part is drumming. It gives people a chance to express themselves, without having to say a word. “People feel heard. People feel empowered,” Norton said.

Norton also does “a lot of work with kids.” Teaming up with the Hamden non-profit “Arts for Learning CT,” he has facilitated drum circles at schools for close to two decades. He frequently visits Hartford and Waterbury schools and after-school programs. “I integrate stories with either the curriculum topics or just positive life skills,” Norton pointed out. “I love working with kids,” said Norton, who has two

The Suburban Garden Club of Cheshire is happy to announce the recipients of this year’s scholarships. The three $1,000 scholarships have been awarded to Cheshire residents.

Scholarships were also awarded to two Cheshire High School graduating seniors, Minoli Fernando and Max Shafer.

But the constantly fluctuating situation remains too uncertain for school officials to be able to guarantee an in-person event in a few months. The polo grounds seems like a event that officials could pull off. “It’s fairly large, a student and their family would drive there. We could do big speeches,” Connellan said. Students and their families would stay in their cars for the ceremony, with students exiting the vehicles only to turn their tassles. Staff reporter Michael Gagne contributed to this story.

Be upfront with your divorce lawyer I always tell my divorce clients that I need to know the good, the bad and the ugly about their situations. They don’t need encouragement to tell me the good. They do need encouragement to tell me all relevant facts including what they perceive to be the bad and the ugly. Frequently what they see as bad isn’t so bad, or may be presented in a way that helps their case. For example, a parent may conceal ongoing therapy thinking it would damage their custody case. Actually, participating in ongoing therapy can often be an effective response to charges of mental instability or being an unfit parent. On the other hand, they may think nothing of introducing a child to a new partner. If done too soon, a judge might see that as lack of judgment on the part

Where there has been an extramarital affair, I can evaluate and help to manage the situation. But only if I know before the situation becomes generally known, as it invariably will be. With some exceptions an extra-marital affair has minimal impact on finances or custody. But, disclosure (or discovery) of the affair can have a major negative impact on the other spouse’s attitude and willingness to be reasonable in negotiations. That negativity increases the cost, emotional and financial, of the case and its duration. At our first meeting, a client told me about her affair and her husband’s suspicions about it. Knowing that, I was able to plan so that the disclosure would come up in a controlled and supportive setting. The setting allowed both spouses to understand the minimal legal

So, not to confuse you, the “red” trail on the other side between the ridge and marsh is still open to walk. However, you can also explore the main area behind the kiosk now. I understand horses and hikers had free and easy access to this portion of the property when it was first acquired by the town. But be forewarned, it is rugged today. If you are a paved trail walker, you’ll want to go elsewhere. If you like adventure, this is fun. You’ll walk through what was the old shed, pass rusty old feed and water troughs, tall grass, some prickly multiflora bushes, a smallish pond with some frogs and then you are on the top of the hillside. It's great for photos, whether

it’s landscape or old farm equipment. From the ridge, you have a great vantage point. Look toward the marsh, note the tops of tall grasses blowing in the wind, along with acres of phragmites and cattails, and you’ll regularly see bicyclists, some groups in lycra and team colors, on this lovely country road. If automobiles would just go slower, the sight would be more relaxing. Also on the ridge are signs of old fence posts from the farm and remains of barns that once housed a dairy operation. I have not gone farther into the property as the brambles kept me from exploring deeper into the woodlands and down the ridge. Happy trails.

AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

By Bryant Carpenter Record-Journal staff

Aside from being heartbroken for their players, area baseball coaches and administrators are taking a hitter’s approach to the cancelation of the 2020 American Legion season. They’re trying not to dwell on that last at-bat. They’re looking to adjust for the next one. The question is, when will that next at-bat come? There’s no lack of ideas on how to fill the void left by last week’s move by the Connecticut State American Legion Baseball Committee. Meriden Post 45 coach Doug Wedge envisions an independent league based at Meriden’s Legion Field. He’s been talking about it with Chris Bishop, president of the Wallingford Cardinals, the organization that oversees travel youth baseball in that town. In Southington, coach Marc Verderame’s Legion team has gone under the wing of Southington Travel Knights Baseball in hopes of lining up games with other travel programs in the state.

And area players are itching to play them. In the span of one week, the CIAC high school season and the American Legion season were scrapped. In Wallingford, players are frequently on the phone with Bishop, wanting to know if they can at least get into the Cardinals’ indoor hitting facility in Silversmith Park, which has been closed since the state shut down due to the coronavirus back in March. “Coach, can we go hit yet? Coach, can we do this?” “Sorry guys,” Bishop tells them. “We have to wait until we hear from the governor.” And that, in a nutshell, is what this story comes down to: When — if at all — does Gov. Ned Lamont, as Connecticut begins to loosen social distancing and other restrictions put into place to combat the pandemic, say it’s OK to resume outdoor sports and recreation? Until he does, any talk or plans for summer baseball remains just that — talk and plans. Area baseball folks fully know the score.

“We need an answer from the governor’s office before we can do anything,” Bishop said. “Look, if we get to the “Now that there’s no Legion, end of July and we still haven’t done anything yet, I figure we might as well set then obviously that changes up a Southington one just for this year under the Travel things. Knights and we’ll see what “We’re in a wait-and-see. As we can do,” Verderame said. soon as we get the OK, we’ll jump and try to do some“We’ll play anybody,” thing.” Verderame added. “Whoever’s clever, you know? If it’s Bishop is optimistic there three teams, if it’s 10 teams will be a six-week summer … There are teams out there season, from July 1 through we can play.”

the middle of August, which is when the preseason starts for high school fall sports programs. Cheshire Legion coach John Escoto will take those six weeks for his players, but he’s pessimistic clearance will come from the state. Escoto works in the cleaning business. Medical buildings are on his manifest and he’s talked to people in that industry.

“I hope this is an issue we’re dealing with a month from now, scrambling to put a team together,” Escoto said. “My gut tells me that’s not going to be the case, though.” Should Lamont give the green light, expect area coaches to mobilize quickly. Many are involved in baseball year round and are used to operating as independent organizations responsible for rounding up their own games.

“We do a lot of this stuff in the fall anyway,” Bishop said. “For us, it’s no really different.” The league Wedge envisions would feature 20-24 games for participating teams. It would follow Legion rules, such as for pitch counts and wood bats, and look to adhere to the Legion brand. It would be strictly independent. Both the national and state governing bodies of Legion ball have shut down all sponsorship for 2020.
