Lawmakers: Bottle surcharge doesn’t help towns clean up
HEART TO HEART
By Kate Ramunni Record-Journal staff
WALLINGFORD — It’s a routine that state Rep. Mary Mushinsky, D-Wallingford, knows well — getting off the train and walking home, a trip of just less than a half-mile. Along the way, she encounters nips — small bottles of alcohol sold at liquor stores that are frequently strewn along roads, highways and parks.
“I’m walking home from the train right now and I’ve already taken pictures of about 10 of them and I just found another four, so that’s 14 and I’ve only gone two blocks,” Mushinsky said during a phone interview Friday afternoon. By the time the veteran lawmaker got home, she had counted 39 along the way. See Bottle, A5
Perosino lands AD job Record-Journal staff
Under the guidance of teacher Carol Warner, a fourth-grade class at Norton School recently celebrated heart health. February is American Heart Month, a time when all people can focus on their cardiovascular health, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The CDC website offers an online tool kit for its 2023 “Live to the Beat” campaign, with information, videos and quizzes designed to help individuals learn more about cardiovascular disease; especially how to prevent and reduce risks. This year’s CDC campaign has a focus on support for Black adults and their heart disease risk. Black adults in the United States die from heart disease at a rate two times higher than white adults. The Cheshire School District has hired a new athletic director, an individual well-known to the town. Cheshire native John Perosino, who currently serves as assistant principal at Dodd Middle School, will take on the new job July 1. Perosino’s hiring was confirmed with a unanimous vote of the Board of Education at its Feb. 16 meeting. The search process included interviewing 12 candidates. Steve Trifone, the current athletic director, announced his retirement last fall after holding the position for 19 years. See Athletic director, A7
