Cheshire teacher expands her art school By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — When Lori Holm decided to teach art and music classes out of her home five years ago, she wasn’t sure enough people would be interested to keep it going. Now, she has several children’s summer programs with up to 30 participants, a black box theater converted from her garage, art classes and music lessons. Most of her Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike home does double duty during theater performances or summer camps and has been transformed over the past five years.

Lori Holm, owner of Arts at Angeloria’s, stands next to the “art barn” at the expanded home art school and performance theater at 223 Meriden Waterbury Turnpike in Southington. Holm provides music and art lessons and has added to her house several times, building decks, gardens and fish ponds to help inspire visiting artists.

“It’s rewarding to know I’ve helped some people in their art journey,” Holm said. “It’s a special thing that Arts at Angeloria’s can bring to the community.” She got her home business approval from the town five years ago. Late last year, she received approval after building a barn that’ll be used for performances during warmer months and for children’s camps in the summer. The steady expansion has drawn opposition from Holm’s neighbor, who objected to the town granting her more leeway to run the school from her house.

Taxes, insurer requirements among new state laws By Susan Haigh Associated Press

HARTFORD — A host of new laws took effect in Connecticut at the first of the new year including expanded sales taxes, mental health parity requirements for insurers, an effort to help rehabilitate more blighted properties, and extended periods between driver’s license renewals. Jan. 1 marked one of several dates when large blocks of new laws take effect in Connecticut. Some of the latest new laws: Take a look at the background in this photo at Cheshire Skate Park. The local landscape as seen Saturday, Jan. 11 looks a bit like spring. The region experienced a warm ride for a few days with temperatures in the mid-60s, breaking records, according to local meterologists. Pictured here, taking advantage of the exceptionally nice weather, is 5-year-old Graham Atkin, who made flying down the ramps on his scooter look like he's been riding these skate hills forever. Graham's parents, Alison and Scott Atkin, watched from the sidelines. Joy VanderLek, The Cheshire Citizen

When asked about any future expansion plans by the Planning and Zoning Commission last year, Holm said she’s out of money. Holm teaches nearly all the classes herself. Her full-time teaching job in Cheshire and classes at Angeloria’s have maxed out her time. She’s not thinking about taking on any more. “It’s where I hoped it would be,” she said. jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ

The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed with the American Dental Association as well as dentists listed through their local dental societies. Dentists are also given the opportunity to

nominate other dentists who they feel should be included in the list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer's work when evaluating the other nominees.

topDentists began in January 2007 with the intent to identify the best dentists and specialists in the country and is the only list of its kind, chosen by the dental profession themselves. Virtually every dentist is given an opportunity to participate. Because dentists must be voted in strictly by their peers and listings cannot be purchased, inclusion in topDentists is considered to be a distinct honor.

safety apparel, metered and other previously exempt parking, dry cleaning and laundry, other than coin operated. Interior design services for individuals will also become taxable in 2020. Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont originally unveiled plans in early 2019 to create a level playing field and expand Connecticut’s sales tax base by repealing various exemptions and imposing the tax on certain tax-free goods and services, from haircuts to child car seats. He told lawmakers that expanding Connecticut’s tax base “helps to make the sales tax more robust, fairer, and raises the revenue we need to get our budget into balance.” But like past governors who tried the same thing, Lamont faced strong opposition and ultimately agreed to this much shorter list of sales tax changes. Lamont and lawmakers did agree to repeal the state’s biannual $250 business entity tax, an unpopular fee charged to most businesses in Connecticut.

Mental health Certain health insurance policies will no longer be able to impose more stringent limits on mental health and substance abuse, compared to other illnesses, beginning Jan. 1. Also under the state’s new Mental Health Parity Act, substance abuse services must be covered if they are required by a court. “Diseases of the brain should not be treated any differently than diseases of the body, and Connecticut’s laws should reflect that,” Lamont said when he signed the bill into law in July. Beginning in March 2021, insurance companies will be required to file annual reports with the state, certifying they’re complying with the new parity law. Required coverage under certain policies for breast ultrasounds and hearings aids will also be expanded in the new year.

with at least 35,000 inhabitants. Interested parties can petition the court to take over a property that has been abandoned for at least a year.

Connecticut drivers may not have to spend as much time in the Department of Motor Vehicles as they used to.

The legislation is considered to be another tool for municipalities to address blight. Among other things, Connecticut’s cities and towns can impose fines and special assessments on owners of blighted properties, and create agencies that can condemn abandoned and blighted buildings and transfer ownership to qualified homesteaders.

A new law allows the DMV commissioner to renew driver’s licenses up to every eight years, instead of every six years. The legislation also extends the length of time between registration renewals from two years to three years.

Police training The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection will now be required to expand its free training on juvenile matters for state and local police. Beginning Jan. 1, it must include techniques for handling incidents involving juveniles and adults with autism spectrum disorder, nonverbal learning disorder or cognitive impairment.

Three of the girls raced for the Lady Knights, who won the season and the championship. In the opening race the Independent ladies took five of the top 12 spots and put six in the top 26 places among the 190 girls in the race.

Former Southington High racer Grace Mahmood finished sixth in the big field followed by teammate Nancy Gfeller in 8th. Astrid Lorenzen came in 10th followed by Bailey Baclaski in 11th and Kaila Handron in the 12th spot. Ann Hayes rounded out the score for the Independent women in 26th place. I wonder what the league is going to do now that the team they made up could win the title again.

Readers like the adventure Around Town with Joy, a new Citizen column, returns next week with Joy VanderLek writing about her recent visit to one of the town’s hot spots. In the meantime, Joy’s recent columns, with the focus on her adventures around town, have elicited some feedback.

“I know little of the side roads and by roads of Cheshire … to me, leaving the house is an adventure. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. – Ruth Ann

“I loved it! Yes, I'm up for an adventure, and looking forward to your next column ... this will be fun! – Donna “Loved your ski story this week.” – Signian Joy welcomes readers to contact her at jvanderlek@ record-journal.com.

R-J EDITORIAL

Taking care of your backyard It’s safe to say that if there were more people like Peter Polack the world would be a better place. That there are too many who treat the world with disrespect is a mystery to those who consider such caretaking a no-brainer. Polack, for years now, has taken it upon himself to pick up the trash left by the careless and uncaring at Hubbard Park. Last year, he bought a luggage scale and began weighing the junk he’d gathered: bottles, cups, food wrappers – you name it. It was out of cu-

riosity, and a desire to answer the question about whether his efforts were worth it. He kept a record of his trash weights on his hiking blog, hubbardpark.blogspot.com. The results may not be astronomical, or surprising, considering how accustomed we are to some people’s careless neglect when it comes to disposing of trash. Polack thought he’d get from 200 to 300 pounds of trash in a year because he was gathering stuff from the trails and not the other parts of the park. But he finished his last

cleanup of the year with just over 600 pounds of garbage while hiking a little more than 205 miles at Hubbard Park. It’s disappointing, and we have Pollack to thank for bringing our attention to it. “It’s just amazing that the people would be that inconsiderate and just drop things everywhere,” observed Maryellen Mordarski, chairwoman of Meriden’s Conservation Commission.

As Mordarski noted, Hubbard Park is the “jewel of the city,” but the disrespect shown to the place by casually leaving a mess is unacceptable anywhere. The simple message behind Polack’s efforts is that people simply need to take responsibility for themselves. The pressing need to start taking care of the planet is rendered a pipe dream when people are unwilling to make an even minimal effort to respect the beauty of their own back yard. Polack deserves gratitude for not only cleaning up the park but for helping to put this all into perspective.

HERE ARE THIS WEEK’S MALE & FEMALE NOMINEES sponsored by: MIDDLESEX COMMUNITY COLLEGE

ANTHONY NIMANI

AVERY DEPODESTA

Whatever this basketball season may bring, Platt is putting down a solid cornerstone with Anthony Nimani. Only a freshman, Nimani is already in the starting five. He followed up a 10-point outing against Bloomfield on Jan. 3 with 12 in Friday’s overtime loss to Plainville. Then came a season-high five 3-pointers and 23 points on Monday at Bristol Central. “He’s going to be a good one,” Platt coach Shawon Moncrief said. “He’s a major part of our team.”

Like Platt’s Anthony Nimani, this rookie has got game — of the on-ice variety. Sophomore Avery DePodesta came out for the first time this winter for the Connecticut Blades, the girls hockey co-op of Amity, North Haven and Cheshire, and she’s established herself as a major factor on offense. With a goal in Saturday’s 6-2 win over Hamden/Wilbur Cross/ Lyman Hall, DePodesta now has five goals and six assists on the season. The Blades are 7-2-1.

JOE PERALTA

KAT DRECHSLER

The Meriden Co-op boys swimming and diving team opened its 2020 season last week with meets against Simsbury and E.O. Smith/Tolland. Joe Peralta swam extremely well in both. The Maloney sophomore, a distance freestyler, compiled three individual wins and swam on two first-place relays. Peralta won the 200 and 500 freestyles vs. Simsbury and the 500 vs. E.O. Smith/Tolland. The relay wins came with the 200 and 400 against Simsbury.

A solid returning core and a big freshman class have things looking back up for the Southington gymnastics program. So does the arrival of a few Level-8 gymnasts who previously did not compete with the Blue Knights. One is Kat Drechsler, who showed what she can do by hitting for a 9.6 on the balance beam in Saturday night’s meet with Farmington. The same night, the senior scored 9.3 on vault, 9.0 on the uneven bars and 8.9 on floor exercise.

ISAIAH THOMAS

NATALIE PANAGROSSO

When your name is Isaiah Thomas, you are perhaps fated to be a good basketball player. The Detroit Pistons of the 1980s had their Isaiah and the Wilcox Tech Indians of 2020 have theirs. After stumbling out of the gate at 0-2, junior Isaiah Thomas got the Indians on their feet with a pair of 22-point performances in victories last week over O’Brien Tech and Whitney Tech. Thomas scored 12 points in the fourth quarter in the 44-36 win over O’Brien.

After opening the season with five straight road games, the LH girls basketball team finally hit the home hardwood last week and responded with three straight wins to improve to 5-3. Natalie Panagrosso, a 5-foot-10 junior center, was a factor in all three home wins. The first-year starter had 12 points and 7 rebounds vs. Coginchaug, 9 points vs. Jonathan Law and, on Monday, 14 points and 6 rebounds vs. Career. The 14 points were a career high, so far.

AWARDS

2019 There are over 15,000 businesses across four cities, Meriden, Southington, Wallingford and Cheshire, whose hard work, dedication and success make our communities a great place to live and work. The Readers’ Choice program was created to recognize and reward our local businesses and to be a resource when you might be looking for a dentist, car repair, or even a place to have dinner with your family. Over 210,000 votes were cast, and over 500 businesses have earned the right to call themselves the Best of the Best and be celebrated at an exclusive first-class gala all for them. Congratulations again, to our 2019 Readers’ Choice winners.
