Democratic campaign signs vandalized

Members of the Berlin Democratic Town Committee (BDTC) awoke Sunday morning to find that all of its signs lining the roads to the Berlin Fair were vandalized, officials announced this week.

The campaign signs, especially along the Wethersfield Road route, were torn and many ruined completely.

The 74th Berlin Fair, dubbed the “biggest little fair in Connecticut,” took place from Sept. 14 through 17. The event attracted more than 80,000 visitors, according to organizers, and offered a little something for everyone,fromfoodtomusictorides,andeverythinginbetween.

The Berlin Fair is all about flight.

Flying skillets, airborne mermaids, and volitant canines were among some of the vast entertainment op-

tions offered last weekend...as well as aerial frogs, courtesy of the event’s frog jumping contest.

“That brought back memories because they did that when we were kids too,” said Mary Duplin. She and her husband Mark grew up in

Berlin and have been coming to the fair ever since. “We would go out in the swamps and streams and grab our frogs and prep them for the fair.”

“Every single one of our lawn signs was callously pulled up and thrown into the trees along the road, with approximately a quarter of them suffering damages, including the metal stakes they were attached to,” said Raul Fernandes, chair of Berlin DTC. “There is absolutely no place for vandalism in our community or in political discourse.

“The belligerence with which these signs were scattered makes it abundantly clear that this was a purposely hostile act,” Fernandes added. “Such reprehensible behavior should be seen an absolute disqualifier in any civilized society.”

Do you want to retire early?

As a financial advisor, I have seen firsthand how much planning it takes to do it. Deciding to leave the workforce (and say goodbye to your steady paycheck) earlier than you previously intended to may come with many considerations. If you are intrigued by the idea of retiring early, read on for some suggestions for how to assess if moving your retirement date forward is something within your reach.

1. Define your dream retirement. A realistic early retirement plan doesn’t happen by chance. It takes careful planning and deliberate action. Before you can figure out how to make early retirement a viable option, take time to envision the kind of life you want to lead when you leave your primary career. Where will you live? What kind of activities do you plan to pursue? These are the types of questions that will help you define what you want your retirement to be like.

2. Quantify your goal. Many retirees find they spend more money in the early years of retirement because they have more time to travel and pursue hobbies. If this aligns with your retirement vision, be generous in your estimate of how much money you need each year. Once you have an estimate of how much it will cost, you will be better able to map the steps you’ll need to take to save enough money to

3. Decide which income source to tap into first. Once you know how much your early retirement will cost, you’ll want to line up the order in which you will tap into your investments. How much income you need, the tax treatment of your investments, and the timing of when you’ll take Social Security are all factors to consider as you map out how you will create a paycheck in retirement.

4. Adjust your saving and spending today. Once you have a clear idea of how much your dream retirement will cost, you can evaluate the potential tradeoffs and sacrifices necessary to make it happen. This will likely require reducing spending while maximizing the amount you are saving.

5. Continue investing for growth. It’s common for retirees to adjust their investment allocation to be more conservative in order to protect their principal from potential market downturns or increased volatility. While this may make sense for some, it’s important for your portfolio to at least keep on pace with inflation. After all, retirement can easily last several decades. Even modest inflation can make a meaningful impact over that timeframe. Factoring inflation into your projections can help you maintain your purchasing power throughout retirement.

6. Don’t overlook health care expenses. Many retirees are surprised by how much of their budget goes toward medical expenses. Don’t be

one of them. Make finding health insurance a top priority. And, consider the pros and cons of purchasing long-term care insurance.

7. Be flexible. In life and investing, there are no guarantees. Unexpected events can happen any time, and many have financial implications. Think about what your options are if your savings come up short, such as adjusting your retirement date, spending or perhaps picking up a part- time job, and make sure you have the right insurance in place to cover your various assets.

Berlin Parks and Recreation will once again be sponsoring Berlin’s Best Scarecrow. The department is encouraging residents, volunteers/ civic organizations, and businesses to create their own unique scarecrows. This year, the scarecrows will take up residency on the lawn area to the right, as visitors enter the Arthur Powers Municipal Complex.

Set-up will occur on Oct. 14 and 15.

Voting slips will be available at the Community Center, Berlin Senior Center, Berlin Peck Memorial Library, and Town Hall. Berlin’s best scarecrow will be decided solely by the public. Voting will begin in Oct. 17 and ends on Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. One vote per person is allowed.

Berlin Park and Rec Department held its 18th annual scarecrow contest in 2022. Scarecrows were set up at the entrance to the government complex, and residents had the opportunity to vote throughout the month of October fortheirfavorite.

I just wanted to comment on the excellent job the Republican party has done in Berlin over these last few years. We have seen growth in our town, with the opening of many new businesses, a greater sense of community, not to mention many, many new paved roads, and definitely a cleaner overall appearance...all the while keeping any tax increases down to a minimum. This has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated!

Re-Elect Mayor Mark

I feel Berlin’s Mayor Mark Kaczynski has earned your re-election vote in November! I am newer to the community and have observed how much Mayor Mark Kaczynski cares about the residents of Berlin. As I have taken the time to learn about the Berlin community, involving myself in town events and meetings, I have noticed Mark is always there too!

Being a senior, my pocket book has been stretched in ways that I could not have anticipated. Costs of homes, fuel, and food are out of

control nation wide. The fixed incomes of seniors cannot easily adjust to these climbing costs. I am grateful that our Mayor has focused his leadership on fiscal responsibility, reducing our debt and keeping our Berlin taxes very low.

While Mark has keep our spending under control, he

has still lead us in strong support of public safety. I am most grateful that we now have a police pension plan that will help recruit top officers to skillfully protect our beloved community.

Leash ordinance

In December of 2021, the Town of Berlin passed a new leash ordinance that requires dogs to be always on leashes on public property. This includes all town parks

and public sidewalks. Animal Control Officers are issuing written infractions. The fine for violation of this ordinance is $100. For more information regarding the leash ordinance, refer to the municipal website.

BLT, Trinity College Quest clean up North Lamentation Mountain

The Berlin Land Trust (BLT) recently partnered with the Trinity College Quest program for a two-day cleanup at Alice Fern Bruce Preserve on North Lamentation Mountain. Their joint efforts not only preserved the area's natural beauty but also enhanced the experience for all who visit.

On Aug. 22 and 26, BLT and Trinity College Quest volunteers hiked to the top of the preserve, nestled in North Lamentation Mountain. Their mission? To protect and enhance.

One standout achievement was the removal of an illegal hunter's stand, promoting wildlife safety and preserving the preserve's integrity. Additionally, an abandoned ceramic cast-iron bathtub was removed piece by piece, restoring the area's natural charm.

A visually stunning accomplishment was the clearing

of a path to a new breathtaking viewpoint. By trimming back trees and vegetation, a new panoramic vista from Lamentation Mountain was unveiled, making the preserve even more enjoyable.

Kudos to Trinity College Quest for their invaluable support. Berlin Land Trust remains committed to conserving open spaces and preserving the town's beauty, ensuring these landscapes remain accessible and enjoyable for generations.

Now the Duplins attend primarily for the arts and crafts exhibits and the animals.

“Not so much the commercial stuff, but the old time stuff that used to be the main attraction when we were younger, ” Mark said.

For the 74th year, the Berlin Fair made itself to be “the

biggest little fair in Connecticut,” according to fair president Stephen Kulinski. The whole event is organized by the Berlin Lions Club, a volunteer organization geared toward serving the local public. Berlin’s tight-knit quality only adds to the fair’s impact, organizers insist.

“There’s people that have told me over the past years that it’s like a big town reunion every year,” said

Kulinski, who’s spent most of his life volunteering. “Because other than the fair, you don’t see some people. And that’s what’s unique about our fair. You have neighbors working with neighbors.”

Kulinski estimates that about 80,000 fairgoers visited this year. Torrents of people flowed throughout the fairgrounds, some trickling toward the beer booth and other younger ones eagerly waiting for their turn to be spun by aliens (a popular ride called Alien Invasion).

The lively atmosphere was amplified by the smoky aromas of grilled chicken skewers from Mr. Shish Ke Bob’s tent and screaming children trapped in rotating metal cages (also known as the Zipper).

After visiting the fair for the first time last year, Kara Bouteiller decided to bring her family again.

“I love that it’s got a big fair feel, but a small fair vibe,” Bouteiller said. “It’s all paved. There’s not a lot of dust and dirt. I don’t have to

worry about my kid having an asthma attack.”

Sixteen-year-old Kai Kutniewski’s first time at the Berlin Fair was when he was 10. Although he hadn’t been able to attend for the past couple of years, he said that his friends were the high-

light of the event.

“You know, being able to spend time with friends that you may not be able to hang out with all the time,” Kutniewski said. He added that his favorite ride is either the Tornado or the Scrambler.

Seasonal flu vax available at Stop & Shop

Stop & Shop has announced that seasonal flu vaccinations are once again available at its more than 70 pharmacy locations across Connecticut for both adults and children aged five-orolder. In addition to flu shots, Stop & Shop is also offering the newly approved RSV, respiratory vaccine to those 60 and older. Eligible customers can receive immunizations for both the flu and RSV during the same pharmacy visit, as the CDC has indicated that these vaccines may be administered alongside each other.
