Julia Salina, and the ripples of an unexpected year By Robert Mayer Special to The Citizen

When Julia Salina received a pass to her strong foot and two defenders converged on her in a club soccer match a series of ripples that would affect the rest of her life started in motion.

The Berlin Powderpuff event will return in 2023.

Powderpuff is back for 2023 By Mike DeRienzo Special to The Citizen

When you think of high school football, you probably think of one of two things. First, the classic image of residents of a small, southern town all bunched tightly together in the stands of the high school stadium. Or you might think of the classic Thanksgiving rivalry between two bitter New Eng-

might be a little different.

There you’ll find the audience cheering on their sons, neighbors, friends, and students, all bundled up in sweaters, coats, and hats, only now these players are battling the cold elements and each other to claim the glory for their town and school.

Garrity, through his school business club DECA, is bringing back the Berlin Powderpuff Game, a flag football game where female players compete against each other.

But Berlin High School senior Brandon Garrity is here to tell you that this year

Real estate investment trusts (REITs) If the idea of generating income from owning properties appeals to you, but you don’t feel prepared to tackle the challenge of direct ownership, REITs offer an alternative. REITs are professionally managed like mutual funds, with money invested in properties such as office buildings, apartment complexes, retail spaces, warehouses or hotels. Those who invest in REITs primarily benefit from the income stream generated by the properties held. REITs are subject to market risk and various fees, and dividends are taxed as regular income. the field were, Salina was a dream. What came next?

What about Prom? What about the beach? What about getting to classes? Could she drive? What would a scar look like?

All of those questions in the matter of seconds, minutes. n How severe was the injury? Ripples. Could she get away with a sprain or was it a tear? As it turns out, Salina has missed her entire senior n Could she play her senior year, a shockingly successful year of high school? Would one by the Redcoats, helped she be able to play one last by her younger sister, who year with her sister, Bella, a most say is not too far besophomore on the team? hind Julia. n She had made a verbal

commitment to play at Bryant University but had not yet signed her National Letter of Intent, which is binding. Would Bryant honor its commitment? If not, what would happen next? n Would she still be able to

play with the reckless abandon and sheer physicality she used to play with. Would she be able to play again at all? Would she have a limp? n What about Senior Day?

Bryant honored its commitment and Salina is signed to play for the Bulldogs next season and they are happy to have her. She drives and has had about as normal a senior year so far as possible except for soccer. “She has been my assistant coach standing right next to me every game,” Joslyn said, of Salina. “She is the best player I’ve ever coached in my six years here and to have here on the sidelines is

brutal knowing what she is capable of, especially with how the season has gone. But even with her not playing her leadership has been invaluable.” Salina said that, while it is awful not to be playing, she tries to help as much as she can. “I’m not going to lie, at the beginning it was awful and there were days I wanted to quit because I had to re-learn everything,” Salina said. “When we called Bryant, coach (Andy) Briggs was amazing and so supportive. And Coach Jos lets me pitch in and coach and be loud. I think I know what the team needs sometimes, and the girls will come and talk to me sometimes when they don’t want to talk to him, which is fun. This team has been awesome from the first game.” She said she doesn’t know how she would have gotten through this without Dr. Waskowitz, Fusion Performance in Cheshire, and “the most supportive family in

the world,” but her career is not over yet. “We’re taking this whole thing,” she said. “We can beat anybody. With all the teams that we have already played we can beat anyone.”

Obituaries Richard John Paskiewicz KENSINGTON - Richard John Paskiewicz, age 80, passed peacefully at home on October 31, 2023, surrounded by his family. Born in 1943, he spent the first 14 years of his life in Plantsville, Connecticut, where he fondly recalled the Norman Rockwell cover of the Saturday Evening Post, serving as an altar boy at Immaculate Conception Church, his grandmother’s Easter bread, and noticing the trains on his way to and from school. He and his brother Robert and their parents moved to Berlin in 1957, where he made lifelong friendships at Berlin High School, from which he graduated in 1961. After college and earning his master’s and sixth year degree, Richard began his career as a teacher in 1965 in the Rocky Hill Public Schools. He would spend the next 47 years as an educator, teaching in the Rocky Hill schools, serving as principal of Griswold Middle School in Rocky Hill, being promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Rocky Hill, serving as President of the Board of Education in Berlin, and then ultimately being appointed Superintendent of the Berlin Public Schools from 1995 to 2005, the

proud culmination of his career. He served at the helm of the schools he, his wife, and his daughter attended. Not one to relax into retirement, he was appointed interim superintendent of the Vernon/Rockville schools in 2006 and the Canterbury schools in 2012. During his retirement, he shifted his focus to his favorite hobbies: building his model train set and gardening. Though he remained active in the Berlin Democratic Town Committee and St. Paul Catholic Church, he also enjoyed spending more time at his home in Cape Cod. He was a lifelong fan of UCONN basketball, football, and the New York Yankees, much to the disappointment of many of his friends who were Red Sox fans. Because of his varied interests, Richard could just as easily discuss

home electrical wiring as baseball statistics, weather phenomena, train travel, and stock prices. He loved Berlin and was active in the community throughout his entire life. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Stella Paskiewicz. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carol, his daughter Tracy, his brother Robert and his family, and sister-in-law Shirley Pulcini. He will be missed by so many. Calling hours were at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of Berlin, 111 Chamberlain Hwy., on Friday, November 3, 2023 from 4:00-7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Paul Catholic Church in Kensington on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 11:30 AM. Burial was at Maple Cemetery in Berlin. The Richard Paskiewicz Scholarship will be awarded to a Berlin High School senior who intends to pursue a degree in a STEAM-related field. In lieu of flowers, donations to the scholarship fund can be sent to: Berlin Board of Education, 238 Kensington Rd., Berlin, CT 06037 ATTN: Richard Paskiewicz Scholarship Fund. Please share a memory of Richard with the family in the online guestbook at www. ericksonhansenberlin. com

State gets $2B in federal funding for rail projects, bridge replacements

Amtrak sought greater annual funding from Congress, warning of potential disruptions to services and raising concerns about the need for updating crumbling infrastructure. Some bridges with rail service in Connecticut have needed updates or replacements for years to fix deteriorating conditions.

Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, noted that the current bridge was deemed “structurally deficient” in 2006. For the past few years, Courtney and other lawmakers in the state’s delegation

The money for some of Connecticut’s projects is part of a larger tranche of $16.4 billion announced by the Biden administration on Monday for rail projects along the Northeast Corridor that shuttle passengers between Boston and Washington, D.C.

Nearly half of the money — about $827 million — is going toward the Connecticut River Bridge, a 116-year old bridge used by Amtrak’s main line and intercity services as well as Connecticut Shore Line East and freight trains.

The Federal Railroad Administration selected 10 projects across the state for rehabilitation and modernization through the bipartisan infrastructure law that was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021.

Gov. Ned Lamont credited the efforts of both the Biden administration and Connecticut’s congressional delegation in securing the transportation funding for a state and region that heavily relies upon rail, especially for commuting.

Connecticut is set to receive nearly $2 billion in federal funding to repair bridges and update aging infrastructure that serve major rail lines along Amtrak’s busy Northeast Corridor and other regional train services.

The WALK Bridge will get $465 million to replace the existing railroad bridge in Norwalk that is part of the Metro-North Railroad’s New Haven Line and Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. The Devon Bridge, also known as the Washington Bridge, secured $245 million for its replacement project, as well as another $119 million for interim repairs until the rehabilitation begins. That bridge, which has gotten further financial commitments from the Federal Railroad Administration, carries thousands of people per day between the New Haven line and the Northeast Corridor. And the Saugatuck River Bridge will also get $23.2 million for its replacement project of its moveable bridge in Westport. Those changes are expected to im-
