Happy birthday to us! That’s right; we enthusiastically celebrated our 80th birthday in 2008 with a plethora of fun and reflective events. We think it’s pretty cool to celebrate our 80th birthday with Gordie Howe, Shirley Temple, Bob Cousy, Maya Angelou, the Oscars and Mickey Mouse!

It’s safe to say, while looking at our programs and services over the past 80 years, that our YMCA hardly looks like the YMCA that was created from the wishes of Martha Neal generous bequest to the YMCA. Yet our YMCA REALLY hasn’t changed. Like our visionary forefathers, our current staff and volunteers remain passionate about delivering quality programs and services to fulfill our mission in the community.

While our first year’s membership topped out at 225 members (at $1.50 per year – imagine that?), today we serve over 12,000 members in our Southington and Cheshire communities. Currently, we are focused on developing healthy lifestyles, strengthening our families and being a partner in the community to meet the physical, mental, social and spiritual needs of our members.

Our heartfelt thanks to: 7O ver 350 dedicated and compassionate staff who carry out our mission with our members on a daily basis; 7 Over 700 volunteers who believe in our work within our community; 7O ver 854 selfless donors who generously contribute to our Strong Kids Campaign (through individual donations and through the support of our special events). Because of you, literally hundreds of kids and families in Southington and Cheshire are able to get through rough times and are able to feel that they are valued as members of our community; 7T he countless number of town agencies and departments, schools, foundations and businesses who have collaborated with us to meet some of the critical needs of our community. Yes, it does take a village…

We enter 2009 in unprecedented times. But we are confident that together we will weather this economic storm and come out an even stronger organization because we are standing up to this challenge as a group of people who believe in what the YMCA has done for the community – for the past 80 years – and what the Y will do for this community in the decades to come.

Longtime community activist William DellaVecchia is honored as the 2009 Southington Community YMCA’s Person of the Year. The community knows that when Bill is involved in a project, cause, group, or event, it is going to be successful. Over the years, Bill’s civil service career has touch all corners of Southington, from civic groups (UNICO, Sons of Italy, and others) to charitable groups (Calvanese Foundation, United Way, and more) to youth activities (YMCA, Little League, and others). In addition, Bill has served in our local government on numerous boards and commissions as well as two terms as Town Councilor. And although Bill has retired from a successful career in banking, Southington is blessed that he hasn’t retired from making Southington a better place to live.

The Southington Community YMCA is proud to honor Southington Walmart as the 2009 Reaching Out Award recipient. The Reading Out Award recognizes organizations, businesses, or groups of people who are making a difference in the community through their actions. The Southington Walmart has provided funding and support for numerous local groups, school-related activities, Salvation Army, and Southington Community Services, just to name a few agencies that Walmart supports. We thank Walmart for their commitment to our community — Southington is definitely better off with Walmart in town.

Southington is fortunate to have many unsung heroes — people who just volunteer to do what is right. They work tirelessly behind the scenes without any thought of getting recognition. The Southington Community YMCA proudly honors Peter Veronneau as the 2009 Unsung Hero. Peter has a long history of volunteer service to Southington, but this honor is especially relevant this year because of his role as leader of the effort to provide a new home for the Southington Community Services Department. Peter is the definition of giving unselfishly for a good cause.
