Origin - Middle English: from Old French ferme, from medieval Latin firma ‘fixed payment,’ from Latin firmare ‘fix, settle’ (in medieval Latin ‘contract for’),

from firmus ‘constant, firm’; compare with firm. The noun originally denoted a fixed annual amount payable as rent or tax; which later gave rise to ‘to subcontract’. The noun came to denote a lease, and, in the early 16th Century, land leased specifically for farming. The verb sense ‘grow crops or keep livestock’ dates from the early 19th Century.

Technology and Farming Modern farming technology has been used to improve many types of production practices used by farmers. In the very early days, some inventions made farming easier and have lasted over time. Barbed Wire was one type of technology that was invented to be used for fencing on the Great Plains. Joseph Glidden placed the barbs along a wire and then twisted another wire around it to keep the barbs in place. Glidden received the patent for barbed wire in 1874 and was quickly embroiled in a legal battle over whether he invented barbed wire. In 1850, Edmund Quincy invented the corn picker. The plow was another invention made from steel, used to break-up hard dirt and it would not break. John Deere invented the plow in 1837 when the Mid-West was being settled. The soil was tougher than that in the East and wood plows kept breaking. So, the steel plow was the answer. Dry Farming is on land with little rainfall relying on moisture, is non irrigated conserving tillage, and has droughtresistant crops. Hardy Webster Campbell, was a South Dakota homesteader, invented a subsoil packer (COMPACTS AND CRUBLES SOIL) circa 1890 and he operated demonstration farms for railroads. By the end of the century dry farming was the solution to the agricultural problems of the Great Plains. Farmers can benefit directly from Wind Mills and wind power by using the electricity generated by wind turbines to power their farms. The extra income can stabilize farmers’ cash flow and help protect them from big swings in commodity prices. Rail Roads influenced farmers by the decrease that railroads brought to farmers’ transportation costs. It became cheaper to transport crops to the big cities and ports via railroads.

Also, farmers could buy and transport industrial goods back to farms, including farm equipment and cattle. The list goes on with equipment that helped the farmers become better stewards of the land including: • Cotton Gin • Cotton Harvester • Crop Rotation • the Grain Elevator • Hay Cultivation and • Milking Machine With technology in mind, here are several emerging technologies that can change the agricultural landscape in the years ahead. They are: • Soil and Water Sensors • Weather Tracking • Satellite Imaging

• Pervasive Automation • Engineering • Radio Frequency Identification uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects. The tags contain electronically stored information. Passive tags collect energy from a nearby RFID reader›s interrogating radio waves. • Vertical Farming

• GPS technology • Water Use and Precision Today’s agriculture routinely uses technologies like robots, temperature and moisture sensors, aerial images, and GPS technology. These devices, precision agriculture and robotic systems will allow farming to be more profitable, efficient, safer, and environmentally friendly as populations and demands continue to grow.

Preparing Hops for Around the World Farm Jokes Family Ranch

Each year throughout the Yakima Valley, hop field workers prepare the crop that most of the world has become reliant on to supply them with their delicious beverages. According to researchers and Hop Growers of America statistics, the Yakima Valley has grown more hops than any other place in the world even surpassing Germany. Overwhelmingly, hop growers and brewers point to craft beer as a newfound love of the hop flavor over lagers and pilsners that have dominated the American market for decades. Today, brewers can choose from more than 130 varieties of hops, many of which are grown right here in the Yakima Valley. Like wine grapes, each hop variety has its own character and adds floral, fruity, bitter or earthy notes to the beer.

Two sisters, one blonde and one brunette, inherit the family ranch in 1875. Unfortunately, after just a few years, they are in financial trouble. In order to keep the bank from repossessing the ranch, they need to purchase a bull so that they can breed their own stock. Upon leaving for another ranch to check on the possibility of buying a bull, the brunette tells her sister, “When I get there, if I decide to buy the bull, I’ll contact you to drive out after me and haul it home.” The brunette arrives at the man’s ranch, inspects the bull, and decides she wants to buy it. The man tells her that he will sell it for $499. After paying him, she drives to the nearest town to send her sister a telegram to tell her the news. She walks into the telegraph office, and says, “I want to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I’ve bought a bull for our ranch. I need her to hitch the trailer to our pickup truck and drive out here so we can haul it home.” The telegraph operator explains that he’ll be glad to help her, then adds, It’s just 99 cents a word. Well, after paying for the bull, the brunette only has $1 left. She realizes that she’ll only be able to send her sister one word. After thinking for a few minutes, she nods, and says, “I want you to send her the word comfortable.” The operator shakes his head. How is she ever going to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pickup truck and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her the word, comfortable? The brunette explains, My sister’s blonde. The word’s big. She’ll read it real slow. ( com-for-da-bull )

From Admin to Alpacas…

A City Girl’s Migration to the Country By Jennifer Ely

Could I trade my 30-minute commute to the office for a 30-second commute to the barn? Happily! John and I were content suburbanites 12 years ago when we fell in love with alpacas and alpaca people. Once smitten, we purchased and remodeled the family farm in Prosser and began our alpaca adventure. We’re still smiling! Raised for their luxurious fleece, alpacas are the perfect livestock for small acreage and novice farmers like us. Alpacas are intelligent, eco-friendly and easy keepers. Softer, stronger and warmer than wool, alpaca fiber is similar in feel and value to fine cashmere. We decided to not only raise and sell alpacas, but also to promote our growing national fiber industry by offering luxurious alpaca fashions and accessories. We do so through open farm events and off farm venues, such as trunk shows at local wineries. Daily husbandry is a joy. Alpacas are just plain fun to be around… curious and gentle… and uniquely styled in their 22 natural colors and two varieties… huacaya and suri. Retirees, young families and singles find alpacas a perfect fit for a rural

lifestyle. At Sage Bluff Alpacas, we welcome visitors daily by appointment, as well as during open farm events. We offer tours, refreshments, fiber arts demonstrations, beautiful retail, and the opportunity to learn about alpacas. Our first open house of the season will be held Saturday, May 18. It is called “Nearly Naked Alpaca Day,” as the alpacas will have recently been shorn and will be hysterical looking in their new haircuts. Mentoring first time alpaca owners has become our niche. It’s a privilege to share our knowledge with new breeders who quickly become good friends. We are supported by active national and regional organizations, as well as a highly evolved, closely knit alpaca community. (Excuse the pun!) As Chamber members, we are avid supporters of the Prosser community and the Yakima Valley’s growing agritourism. To learn more about our alpacas, contact us - John and Jennifer Ely at Sage Bluff Alpacas in Prosser, 509786-4507, or visit their web site: www. sagebluffalpacas.com.
