By Paul Harvey And on the 8th day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, “I need a caretaker.” So God made a farmer. God said, “I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the fields, milk cows again, eat supper and then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board.” So God made a farmer. “I need somebody with arms strong enough to rustle a calf and yet gentle enough to deliver his own grandchild. Somebody to call hogs, tame cantankerous machinery, come home hungry, have to wait lunch until his wife’s done feeding visiting ladies and tell the ladies to be sure and come back real soon - and mean it.” So God made a farmer. God said, “I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn colt. And watch it die. Then dry his eyes and say, ‘Maybe next year.’ I need somebody who can shape an ax handle from a persimmon sprout, shoe a horse with a hunk of car tire, who can make harness out of haywire, feed sacks and shoe scraps. And who, planting time and harvest season, will finish his forty-hour week by Tuesday noon, then, pain’n from ‘tractor back,’ put in another seventy-two hours.” So God made a farmer. God had to have somebody willing to ride the ruts at double speed to get the hay in ahead of the rain clouds and yet stop in mid-field and race to help when he sees the first smoke from a neighbor’s place. So God made a farmer. God said, “I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bails, yet gentle enough to tame lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-combed pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the broken leg of a meadow lark. It had to be somebody who’d plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed and rake and disc and plow and plant and tie the fleece and strain the milk and replenish the self-feeder and finish a hard week’s work with a five-mile drive to church. “Somebody who’d bale a family together with the soft strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh and then sigh, and then reply, with smiling eyes, when his son says he wants to spend his life ‘doing what dad does.’” So God made a farmer.

School Board Approves Awarding Contract for Construction of New High School

We are Proud to be a Part of This Great Community We are always looking for talented and motivated people to join our Walmart Supply Chain! \\careers.walmart.com

By Elena Olmstead GSD Communications Director The construction of a new Grandview High School took a major step forward on Friday, Aug. 3, when the Grandview School Board approved awarding the contract for the project to Fowler General Construction. During a special meeting held on that Friday afternoon, the school board unanimously approved awarding the construction contract to the company from Richland, which was one of three general contractors who bid for the project. “It looks like we’re ready to build a new school,” said Board Chair Dale Burgeson. It was estimated the construction cost of the high school, not including design

work, furniture or the relocation of the wood and metal shop, would be just under $54 million. The board awarded the contract to Fowler for just under $53.7 million, not including tax. The new high school will include everything from a second auxiliary gym to an auditorium to state-of-the-art classrooms. Construction of the new high school is estimated to take two and a half years, with students expected to enter the new building in the fall of 2020, with final construction – including landscaping and parking lots – being completed sometime in 2021. “We have an exciting time coming up over the next two years,” Burgeson said. An official groundbreaking for the project is expected to happen sometime in early September.

In order to expedite new development of this property, and to meet the special needs of a large food processing base, the City of Grandview has developed a high-capacity water and wastewater treatment system. This system is regularly improved and upgraded to maintain its efficiency and capabilities well into the future. The Port of Grandview’s first business park is the Wallace Way Business Park. Only one 3-acre lot remains available. The largest business park is the Byam Business Park. With 67 acres of available property, zoned light industrial that includes all the infrastructure needed for light industrial development. The business park is named after former Port of Grandview Commissioner Colleen Byam, who was a champion for economic development in Grandview during her three terms (18 years) as a port commissioner. Byam was celebrated for playing an important role in helping bring the Walmart Distribution Center, Yakima Valley Community College branch campus and numerous other entities to Grandview. The newest business park for the Port of Grandview is Higgins Property. There is 24.26 acres.

Here's to the Farmer Songwriters: Luke Bryan / Michael Carter / Chase Mcgill Talk about an uphill battle Two thousand acres of beans and cattle But he don’t ever get rattled He just goes ‘til the sun goes down Hydraulic fluid on his jeans Red dye diesel and ten rows between A cold one on the porch and a good nights of sleep Y’all hold ‘em up with me now Here’s to the farmer that plants the fields in the spring That turn from green to that harvest honey Hold one up for the banker downtown That got him on his feet with handshake money Here’s to the farmer’s wife That loves him every night Raising a son, raising a daughter They gather ‘round the table, send it up to the Father Somehow they get closer when times get harder Here’s to the farmer Subdivision’s creeping on in Neighborhood kids keep jumping his fence He could double his money But that’d be the end of a promise he’ll never break ‘Cause he looked his daddy in the eye And he’s got that stubborn pride He’ll be here ‘til the day he dies No, he wouldn’t have it any other way Here’s to the farmer that plants the fields in the spring That turn from green to that harvest honey Hold one up for the banker downtown That got him on his feet with handshake money Here’s to the farmer’s wife That loves him every night Raising a son, raising a daughter They gather ‘round the table, send it up to the Father Somehow they get closer when times get harder Here’s to the farmer Yeah, here’s to the farmer that loves his day in the sun Won’t sell that old half-ton Nobody knows better ‘bout a hard-earned dollar Just tell him how far he’s gotta go and he’ll go further Here’s to the farmer Here’s to the farmer Thank you, boys
