Masks Required at all nd Balloon Rally Events Welcome to the 32 Great

Prosser Balloon Rally

The Great Prosser Balloon Rally is excited to bring balloons back to Prosser after not being able to have an event last year. We are happy to bring back the gorgeous hot air balloons to Prosser to lift everyone’s spirits in these trying times. As we prepare for our 32nd annual event, we are requiring masks and social distancing, but thrilled to still be able to have an event and allow everyone to enough seeing hot air balloons! We are happy to have this event in our town, and show off our beautiful area to all the visitors. If you see a balloon pilot, or one of our sponsors please tell them thank you for helping bring this wonderful event to town. We have sunrise launches planned for Sept. 24th, 25th, and 26th at the Prosser Airport, Weather Permitting, masks required. A Night Glow show has been planned for Saturday, Sept 25th at Art Fiker Stadium, and the stadium will open at 6:30 p.m. for some great music from the Bram Brata Steel Drum Band. All of the sun rise launches and night glow are dependent upon the weather, and we are requiring masks for all who wish to attend. We are looking forward to a great rally this year, and are very thankful that Tim Gale has accepted our invitation to be our Balloonmeister. We encourage the public to grab their cameras and come out and enjoy the early morning launches. The beauty of the balloons floating over the Yakima River is a sight that everyone should see. And don’t forget about the Night Glow, sponsored by PMH Medical Center and the Milne Kid Zone will have goodie bags to hand out at Night Glow, while the balloons prepare to light up. The Great Prosser Balloon rally is a very special event with a lot of tradition and history. Every year, it introduces a new generation of kids to hot air ballooning and sparks so many great questions and interests. We appreciate the support and effort throughout the community to help make this a wonderful event for Prosser every year. Chairman, Morgan Everett

We are requiring masks and enforcing social distancing at the morning launches AND Night Glow. Due to current requirements by the State, masks will be required at ALL of The Great Prosser Balloon Rally events regardless of outdoor

locations and vaccination status. If people do not wish to wear masks we ask them to walk the launches from outside of the airport. We greatly appreciate your understanding and support as the

Committee works hard to continue with this family friendly event while following recommendations to protect our pilots, sponsors, volunteers, and spectators. Thank you!

She flies in the Willamette Valley and travels as much as possible to balloon rallies around the Western United States. Since 2016 she has now flown in all of the Western States at balloon rallies. Or you can find her flying just for the fun of flying. Carmen says ballooning creates life-long friendships and families. She started flying in Prosser in 2003. Kearney Davis

Kearney’s Mistress Pilot Name: Luke Cesnik Home: St. Cloud, Minnesota Balloon Name: Freedom Flight Sponsor: The Great Prosser Balloon Rally Organization: Freedom Flight V is part of Freedom Flight, Inc. which is a nonprofit, educational Corporation established in 1988. The company seeks to honor and increase the awareness of P.O.W. / M.I.A. issues. The organization is made up of dedicated volunteers who give their time, talent and money to fly three POW/MIA hot air balloons at various events across America and the World. Interesting Facts: Luke started flying when he was 15 and after a stint in the Air Force he used the GI Bill to get his commercial, instrument, multi-engine and flight instructors rating. He has been flying for 51 years. Luke took his first balloon ride in 1990 and decided he could do this too! After flying balloons for the past 28 years, he has many wonderful memories, but one really stands out in his mind as one of the best: The time he flew the Pilot and Navigator from the same B-52 that was shot down over Hanoi during the Vietnam War. They were the only ones who survived. They were both captured and held as POW’s at the infamous Hanoi Hilton prison camp. And here they were many years later in the POW balloon with him as they dedicated the flight to the ones they lost back in Vietnam the day when they were shot down. Another flight that stands out to Luke is when he got to see the snow fall up.

Pilot Name: Kearney Davis Home: Birkenfeld, Oregon Balloon Name: Kearney’s Mistress Sponsor: Sewing Basket & Quilted Country Inn Started Ballooning: Kearney’s interest in ballooning began while he was crewing at The Great Reno Balloon Race approximately 30 years ago. He started his pilot training in 1996. He completed his pilot training January of 1997. Then in 2015, he went on and certified and became a commercial pilot. He has been flying ever since! Interesting Facts: Kearney and his family enjoy traveling to and participating in balloon rallies. They have had the opportunity to fly in WA, OR, NV, AZ, NM, CA, WY and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. His wife, Deanna, named the balloon “Kearney’s Mistress” as she said it is the only thing he is allowed to spend money on other than her. So, his balloon is his mistress!

He was flying in Hudson, WI. While they were flying it began to snow huge flakes and visibility started to become poor, so he picked a good place to land and began his decent. As he did, they began descending faster than the snow was falling and it appeared as if the snow was falling up. One of the passengers said that she felt like she was in a snow globe like floating in a dream. Ballooning in Prosser: This is Luke’s 4th time joining us at the Great Prosser Balloon Rally, coming all the way from Minnesota.

NO PETS ON THE FIELD! Please be aware that pets are not allowed on the airport field during rally weekend. Pets are also not allowed in Art Fiker Stadium for the Night Glow Show. Dogs can sometimes become irritated at the high frequency sounds that may be emitted from the propane burners used to heat the air in the balloons. This is not only painful for the dogs but can be dangerous if a dog that is in pain is inadvertently provoked by another dog or heaven forbid a child. There have also been problems in the past of dogs “marking their territory.” Unfortunately the territory marked were balloons in the process of being inflated. So for the comfort of your pet, the safety of our spectators, and to keep the balloons as clean as possible please do not bring your pets to The Great Prosser Balloon Rally events.

The view from a balloon overhead shows those on the ground preparing to launch at the Prosser Balloon Rally last year. Weather can sometimes keep the balloons earthbound, but fortunately it doesn’t happen often in the Prosser event.

Weather permitting. If the weather is not good the balloons don’t fly. If the sky is clear? Is it raining? Is it really cold? That is the weather at launch time, but what is it later? The primary concern is wind speed at various altitudes, and moisture. Winds beyond three or four miles per hour can be a problem for balloon pilots. When aloft, pilots must depend on the wind velocity staying relatively stable. In Prosser weather hardly ever prevents the balloons from flying. There is a micro-climate that is created by the proximity of the Horse Heaven Hills to the Prosser Airport launch site. If one day the weather is bad, one or two of the three-day event almost always are ideal for early morning or late afternoon flights!
