Welcome What does it take to deliver a new banknote series or a modern ePassport, or other identity document successfully?

As government documents become increasingly sophisticated, we have invited over 40 experts to the capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo, situated on the west coast of the island, just south of the Kelani River, this is a principal port on the Indian Ocean. The plant in Biyagama prints more than a billion banknotes a year and supports the currency needs of many central banks, including Sri Lanka. The site employs over 300 local people and is a key Centre of Excellence for global banknote production.

Learn how a father and son team used Dearneside Press, a legitimate printing business, to manufacture counterfeit Scottish banknotes. The counterfeit notes were printed at the shop, then taken to the son’s house to simulate all the security features. Three boxes of evidence were submitted for examination after the raid on both properties, but there was more to come. Sheets of counterfeit banknotes, inks, stamps, rolls of used and unused foil, dies for hot foil stamping machine, genuine pattern banknotes, crime scene photos, and computer files/images had to all be linked together for the six different counterfeit banknotes.

Holograms, windowed threads, and UV patterns were simulated on UV dull paper. Amongst all the evidence was a huge surprise that the counterfeiters could not refute. A mammoth task, but it was all worth it!

Identity Document Fraud in an Online Environment – The Challenges of Digital ID Verification Michael van Gestel, Onfido With the digital revolution of the 21st century, millennials, governments, and corporations have increasing requirements for self-service, quick and reliable document authentication remotely and at scale. The revolution is upon us and fraudsters have access to better technology, leaked data and a vast library of faces from social media.

This workshop will focus on the challenges global organisations deal with when trying to stop targeted attacks in a document-not-present environment. During this interactive workshop we will share some of the latest fraud rings we have detected and the results of our research that can help you make better informed decisions regarding document authenticity in an online environment.

The Next Level – Mastering Machine Authentication Jonathan Ward, Secura Monde International The efficient handling of high volumes of banknotes requires machines to count, fitness check and authenticate the banknotes.

While banknotes have evolved, so have the machines that handle them, as have the features they read. Today we have not only ‘level 2’ machine readable security features designed for day-to-day use, but ‘level 3’ features which are highly secure, covert, central bank-only features designed to deliver near forensic level authentication at speed.

This seminar will focus on the interaction between the machine-readable technologies on the market today, their interface with cash automation sensors, banknote design implications, and how they should be adopted so as to ensure there is minimum disruption and cost to the commercial sector when new banknote designs are issued by the central bank.
