Looking Closely at Numbers …and the freedom and optimism they provide

Reestablishing the connections: Mathematics allows us to transcend limitations and frees us from physical constraints.

Nature has introduced something important in the rearrangement of material that produces what we call the intellect and its development of mathematics.

Open and careful thoughtfulness and resisting the temptation to be certain is important to every human endeavor and brings profound rewards.

Mathematics illustrates freedom in its very structure.

From the Author In “Looking Closely at Numbers,” we see that numbers may have begun as counting but once numbers became mental images, we explored them, and found that they were not as clear as they seemed. Irrational numbers challenged our original thoughts about measurement itself.

With the mathematician’s willingness to reconsider what a number is, the combined concepts of rational and irrational numbers (as we imagine them) produced the real number system.

Without the real numbers, the mathematics that gets us to the moon and back would not be possible. All of the mathematics of motion and change depends on these numbers from the engineering of car engines, to building bridges, even to the quantum mechanics of the subatomic world. Our field of vision now extends from the infinite vastness of space to the mind-boggling depth of the atom.

In “Grand Partnership,” we look at the fact that the complexity of the human brain, with all its potential, is part of nature’s own creative action. We see this in the presence of computational skills in nonhuman animals, even plants, and in the evolution of our nervous system. From this point of view, the construction of science and culture— language, mathematics, music and art— are all accomplished by nature, in the ongoing action and evolution of organic material. This raises the question, should human lives be understood as being in some partnership with nature?

While “Happy Fourth,” celebrates the birth of a nation, it also suggests that it may be time to look carefully again at the meaning of the Founders’ words—words such as truths, equal, inalienable, rights, life and liberty—the way mathematicians have probed the meaning of some of their earliest ideas about number, distance, geometry or infinity, in order to bring them into better focus and make our response to them more effective.

In “Irrationality and Freedom,” we see how one of the most influential mathematicians, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, used his mathematical intuition to understand larger issues leading him to propose that the fundamental element in the universe is more like a mind than a particle.

And he justifies the existence of freedom with the existence of irrational numbers.

Mathematics is clearly part of life.
